From start to finish you are treated with the most warm and welcoming care. The food is incredible. The crab and bread, kingfish and chocolate mousse I couldn’t recommend more - I wasn’t the biggest fan of the salad but probably just because I tend to prefer a less sweet palate. Tried the wine and ‘snake tree’ cocktail: both delicious. And the most important thing to note - great place to come for coeliacs and gluten intolerances as they have a whole separate menu and did not react to any cross contamination so know they take it seriously. If you’re visiting Edinburgh come visit and make sure you try the mousse!

The service was warm and attentive, but unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations. None of the five dishes we tried stood out, and overall, the meal lacked the finesse or flavour that might justify its price point. The potato udon with wild mushrooms and XO sauce, in particular, tasted more like supermarket-grade Chinese five spice with an overpowering hit of burnt garlic than a thoughtfully composed dish. The ambience also left much to be desired. Our seating options were either a direct view of a radiator on a bare wall or a window overlooking derelict office buildings on North West Thistle Street Lane. The soundtrack for the evening, Eminem and similar, felt more jarring than atmospheric. I left feeling frustrated after spending £100 on a dinner for two that simply wasn’t good. A disappointing experience, especially given the promising service.

Gave this place another chance. Kitchen does a great job. But the front of house….they just keep missing it. Good example: I asked to reduce the service charge (as an American…) and they didn’t ask what the problem was…it’s like, they think they’re infallible, and there is an air of arrogance with some of the front of house. If Noto haven’t responded to this review, you know they just don’t care about feedback. People who don’t listen to feedback are intellectually incurious. That’s a terrible thing for a restaurant. My bet? Noto rides the hype a little longer and then a new restaurant replaces it.

The staff was kind, but overall, the service left a lot to be desired. It took at least 30 minutes just to get our drinks, and another 20 before the first dish arrived. As for the food—the pork was absolutely incredible: juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. Unfortunately, that was the only standout. The rest of the dishes were overpriced and surprisingly bland. Long, elaborate menu descriptions couldn’t make up for the lack of actual taste. It was honestly disappointing. Spending money on food that doesn’t deliver is one of the saddest experiences for me. If you already have a reservation, do yourself a favor and order the pork three times—the portions are small, and you’ll likely need two or three to feel satisfied. If you don’t have a reservation… maybe that’s actually for the best.

I’ve been to Noto a number of times since it opened and I’m afraid to say, it’s starting to lose its edge a bit. The staff are, and always have been, first class and very friendly and attentive. The food has been declining ever so slightly in quality though, since its brilliant start. It does feel like some dishes aren’t freshly prepared and one or two of the dishes just didn’t work at all for me at all. It’s a high end price point, so I do expect the best.

My wife and I really enjoyed our evening meal here. Of all the dishes we tried, only one was a little disappointing. Having read the reviews before going, everyone raved about the north sea crab, warm butter, sourdough and it really was as good as they all say. The pork belly was also delicious and the trout temaki was so good we ordered it again. And of course I had to try the chocolate mousse with miso caramel. Fantastic. We also had a few cocktails and beers which were very good. Would definitely go back if I found myself in Edinburgh again.

This was by far the worst restaurant meal we have ever eaten. It started so well with their signature crab in butter, an elegant and well-balanced dish. We were then cruelly led to believe that the rest of the food would reach that standard, but nothing else came remotely close. What followed was unbalanced, poorly cooked, canteen food. The quality and choice of the ingredients were questionable; for example, an absolutely tasteless shiitake mushroom in a hard doughnut. Prawn toast, which was the worst dish of all, with any indication of prawns overwhelmed by the sea of avocado foam, almost inedible and leaving an unpleasant taste. On no level was this a balanced dish. Overcooked pork on a stick followed; Scotland has some of the best pork in the world, but this did not appear to be some of it. The wagyu beef arrived; again, Scotland has superb beef, for example, Perthshire has its own herd of Highland Wagyu. Whatever was on our plate was so overcooked and further disguised by its sauce that it was impossible to clarify how good the beef actually was. The accompanying pickles were actually nice but they completely overpowered the insipid beef. Again, the balance was out. We find it impossible to say anything nice about the food. We have eaten in Michelin-rated restaurants here in the UK, Europe, and North America. Edinburgh equally has very good restaurants, but this wasn’t one of them.

So my daughter chose this restaurant for her birthday meal. We like to try different eating places and cuisines. The restaurant is unassuming, tucked away on Thistle St near some other interesting businesses, like the wee vintage clothes shop. The concept is Japanese inspired dishes. Inside the restaurant, it's rustic decor, informal and clean with good toilet facilities. We liked it. Food is small plates for sharing. We liked the concept. Stars of the show - tasty, different, stunningly presented dishes. Rich food. Service was great all round. A special mention for Hamish who had a lovely way with him - attentive but not overly so; discreet; professional; charming; respectful and helpful. But the service generally was very good - very professional, customer-focused service. Other comments: If you like, and can tolerate raw fish and rich food, no issues. Don't expect to visit this restaurant for a plate piled high with copious amounts of food. You will be disappointed. Not their concept. But even so we felt that the plates for two could have been slightly bigger for the price. Booking - I was asked for my credit card details to confirm booking. Unusual. Also if you cancel without enough notice, a charge of £50 pp. Seems a bit OTT. Wondered if this restaurant has been stung a few times by people booking and not turning up? C'mon fellow diners - if that's you, not fair! Why? Well the business loses out - could have made the table available to others looking to book - who also miss out because you didn't think to free up the table. Employed staff need to be paid - loss of income to pay them. We all need to make a living. Food wasted perhaps? Who can afford to waste food with the cost of living as it is? And next time you try to book a restaurant, it might not be so easy for you. Word gets around the dining community. So let's be fair - help the restaurant, help others, help ourselves. Thanks to all at Noto - a different dining experience.

We absolutely loved dining at Noto. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was vibrant and fun, and the service was fantastic. Hamish and Julia, along with everyone else there really took care of us and made us feel welcome. We loved it so much, we came back again 2 nights later. Booked late once in Edinburgh because of a desire for refined cuisine in good French. I recommend, it was good, quite new and surprising associations, overall very good. I give the kitchen 4/5 because of the frying in each dish and a severe lack of freshness, even an interlude in the middle of the meal. Dishes that sometimes could have been done without. Quite expensive (277€ for 2, with two glasses of wine each). Inside it's nice, the service was good.

Excellent service and a pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food was a major letdown — especially considering the price level. Some dishes had delightful flavors, but despite ordering a large number of high-priced items, and even though we weren’t particularly hungry and fully understood the restaurant’s concept, we left feeling far from satisfied. Severely overpriced.

I loved my dinner at Noto! I particularly recommend the Trout Temaki and the North Sea Crab, but everything was fresh, bursting with flavour, and really rich in the best possible way. The cocktails complement the menu beautifully - what a treat! Solo dining tip: the bar is actually in a different room as the main dining room, much cozier if you’re dining alone, and they still serve the full menu.

Way too expensive for what it was Got the crab butter. It's really crab cooked in liquid butter, and it's as good as u expect(given how it sounds), plus the herb oil works well. However with the recent price increase it's just unfathomable why it deserves such a price. Also the vegetarian udon is now 20£ for a tapas sized thing. And there's service charge on top of that. The prices are crazy

Really disappointed with this restaurant. Certainly, it was very good, but everything else leaves something to be desired, hence the only star. The portions are tiny, and be careful, it looks bigger in photos, but it's really tiny. For the asking price, it's frankly excessive, even with quality products. The service is not at all up to the standard of a restaurant that aims to be "upscale" with a gastronomic side: we take the aperitif and main course order at the same time, the first courses arrive while we are just starting to drink our aperitif. Everything is shipped in 45 minutes (5 dishes, recommended quantity for two people). No appetizers or bread (which is always nice with dishes with sauce). We left feeling really hungry. I was so disappointed that I didn't have dessert, which never happens, especially in this type of restaurant. Last big disappointment: we were charged a high tip directly on the bill, without giving us a choice, unlike other restaurants we visited in Scotland. Not only is it imposed on us, but they also impose the percentage on us, which I find quite lamentable, because at the moment, we were disappointed with the service, and the idea of being forced to pay a tip for a service that I did not like, does not please me. In summary, very good food, but overall poor experience. Go your way.

Mixed reviews on this place. I’ll start by saying the flavors of the dishes were very good. However, the price point and serving size was a huge miss for me. The plates were all pretty expensive and the portions were tiny. Even for shared plates the servings were small. It was about £50 for two small plates and a drink and I left feeling hungry. The waitstaff however was delightful and very helpful.

My wife and I returned to Noto for our second visit in the last few months with our two children and it was fabulous! We started out with some cocktails which were really great. We literally ordered the entire menu (13 dishes) to share and doubled up on the crab butter (a must), beef tartar, and trout temaki. Every dish was fabulous and the desserts were amazing! For the four of us, we were all satisfied at the end, with not too much or too little. Just right. Highly, highly recommended!

Everyone was so helpful and showed great knowledge of the menu. Me and my wife sat at the bar, we ended up speaking to the bartender about a few things he made us feel very comfortable. My one request is, could you look to use authentic Japanese sake sets with the Tokkuri sake flask with the small sake cups. I personally think this looks better than a sake glass, and it's also the way it's meant to be served.

Interesting experience. Very friendly and helpful dining room staff. The idea of dishes to share is nice but in my opinion the proposals on the menu do not go perfectly with the proposed concept, to be shared a dish must be easily portionable among the diners and for some it is almost impossible. The flavors of the dishes stand out for their strong character. Some repetitions between one dish and another (soy sauce, tabasco and worcestershire sauce) The bill was slightly high in proportion to the menu.

Best restaurant we ate in a long time! Shared dining with little dishes of high quality. The food was good. The service was good too! The setting is decent. The food was extremely overpriced for the portion size. We were two ordering 5 dishes and the amount totalled nearly 90 pounds for small portions and bad food. The butter crab was mostly butter, barely any crab. The chicken yakitori was burnt and unpleasant. The potato udon had a concerningly sour taste. The list goes on… The staff at the front were absolutely lovely, otherwise our waitress was rude and judgmental. This restaurant is a robbery.

Amazing food coming in small plates, good cocktails. The interior is simple yet fairly spacious compared to some other similar restaurants. The bread with whipped tofu for the starter was great - although I expected more from the bread (it was not as warm as I would prefer and also was a tiny bit stiff), the tofu made up for that. North Sea crab with sourdough was great - delicious comfort food. Again, I expected a bit more from the bread coming in the side but it still was good. The beef tartare had a pretty basic taste and the portion size was tiny (the muffins that came soaking in butter were definitely much larger than the tartare itself) - a bit underwhelming. Anster, mushroom and truffle croquettes were amazing! The truffle was very prominent and the filling of the croquettes was super tender. Okonomiyaki was a bit stiff in my opinion - it was still delicious but the same theme about the bread not being over the roof applies. Potato udon with wild mushrooms was a highlight! The flavour was super rich and balanced and this was the most complex flavour among all the dishes I tried that night. The chocolate miso bar dessert was nice and tasty but there was nothing special about it in my opinion. I would probably make it less sweet too. The cocktails were decent but I expected a bit more. The only highlight to me was the hundred acre cocktail. Just desserts and belle&sebastian were just good. The campfire old fashioned felt too classic even though they tried to make a twist. Overall, the flavours of the dishes were fairly straightforward most of the time but the implementation was great for most of them and it was delicious. Come to this place if you are not very much up for experimentation that night and are looking for the flavours that do work for most of the people and you won’t be disappointed

Service was exceptional throughout and again contributed to a relaxed environment. The food was great - we ordered 5 plates which was the right amount for two people. The absolute star of the show was the North Sea Crab with butter and sourdough. I usually order crab wherever I go but this might have been the best crab dish I have ever had in my life. Other standouts were the Anster (arancini) and the chicken yakitori. Total came to around £100 with service charge and sparkling water. Small plate sharing concept, in nice moody restaurant with low bass tunes. Wait staff friendly and accommodating. The food has some highlights but not all dishes have the same wow factor, which I was expecting given the hype and the bib gourmand. We had the crab butter which was a hit, the seabass, which was very flavoursome but you only get 7 miniscule teaspoon slices for something like £12. The beef tartare was good, the crumpets were ok, so overall not a particularly special dish. The kale, i would skip- it was overly seasoned and dry. The potato udon was not good- i was expecting an al dente glutinous, translucent udon, similar to how potato /sweet potato noodles are served in asian cuisine, but this one was floury, limp and soft. The scallops were definitely the best dish of the evening. Large, juicy, firm and sweet with interesting flavours. Dog friendly at the bar, so that was a big plus for us as we were traveling with him.

Had a lovely time at Noto! Came here on a recommendation from a colleague, so glad I did :) Servers were very nice and did a fantastic job with bringing out the dishes evenly, allowing us to have plenty of room at the table. Liked the intimate vibes, and sat by a window which was nice. 5 plates was pretty solid, though we could've definitley gotten 6 and been not stuffed. - Crab Butter: sooooo yum. Wish there was a bit more crab in this, but omg wow so delicious. Order this first, so you can keep the butter throughout the rest of your meal. Pairs wonderfully with the sourdough. - Kale Salad: this was okay. Wish it came with more greens. Had a nice crunch to it. - Anster Croquettes: so rich and savory. Can be cut in half, but fun to take in one bite once they cool off. - Okonomiyaki - I personally do not like this dish (not just at Noto, but anywhere), so gave it all to my partner - Scallops with Shellfish Dumplings - small, but scallops had a nice flavor and texture to them. Slight crunch on the edges, but smooth inside. Dumplings were fab too. Would definitely come back!

Ate at Noto for my son’s birthday last night. Funny experience. We all felt the food was good, but we probably won’t go back. There were 3 of us, sharing, and it felt that some of the dishes didn’t really lend themselves to that, like the trout. Really 2 mouthfuls. Things like the crab and bread were good shouts, but we could have done with more info on really dinky options. Also, it asked when we booked if it was a special occasion, but my son wasn’t even offered a happy birthday greeting. So, food tasty but so close to a tasting menus size that not really possible to share!

Food was expensive and really not that special. It tasted good, but not worth the price. Service was fairly good though. I had the tomato cocktail which was special but pricey.

Noto is a nice restaurant with interesting flavor combinations. I would highly recommend the bbq monk. The pork belly, tartare and chocolate miso bar desserts are nice as well. The food is good and the staff is friendly.

Bossam was the most delicious! The atmosphere is good, but the portions are a bit small.

The fact that I only took one photo says it all. Small tasting plates and each and everyone was taste explosion. Who can think about taking more photos. Utterly delightful evening.

Great small plates - some really excellent bits of fish including the yuzu-soaked mackerel and the monkfish. Only criticism would be that the dishes, though excellent, don't really lend themselves to a small plates/sharing format as some served in bowls with sauces and odd numbered pieces.

It was so loud in the restaurant that I couldn’t enjoy my dinner. Our table was sandwiched between 2 others and when I saw how close the tables were, I asked if we could sit at one of 2 empty tables by the wall. Despite making a reservation a month before and although one of those tables was not seated until 10 minutes before we left, they were unable to seat us in a quieter spot. I honestly had to lean in and ask my husband to repeat himself every time he spoke. It was exhausting. 2 of my 3 dishes were so-so; the pork belly lettuce wraps were very tasty.

Amazing food! Really recommend. Both food and drinks were tasty. Would come again and try the other dishes we didnt try.

Noto already has so many accolades that I'm not sure a google review is necessary, but regardless, it was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. My husband and I visited here for a lunch during our honeymoon, and the interior, staff, and food were all immaculate. The prices are accessible, which is really wonderful for how amazing the food is. The Cactus Blossom cocktail was incredible. The service was prompt and discreet, and the decor is understated but intriguing. I'm still dreaming about the avocado, daikon, and rice roll, and I'm afraid that I can't eat gnocchi ever again because nowhere else could live up to the gnocchi from Noto.

This was our first meal in Edinburgh and it was incredible! We tried almost all of the tasting plates and it was paired with the most perfect wines. Highly recommend!

We loved celebrating my wife's birthday with our family Noto. The service was exceptional, warm and professional. As we had a couple of dietary restrictions noted ahead of our lunch, the staff were well aware and prepared. The food was (again) fantastic, beautifully served and plates cleared. Will be back!

Awesome hole in the wall restaurant serving up fun small dishes. The north sea crab with warm butter and sourdough is to die for. The beef tartare was very good and the broccoli tempura with togarashi was exceptional. The arbroath smokie croquettes with katsuobushi were also very good and super interesting if you never had katsuobushi before. The ox cheek bao buns with onion and star anise were also to die for and the short rib with maitake, cherry mustard, and celeriac was just good. The prices are super fair and you get great value here. I really enjoyed this spot and highly recommend it

It was the best dinner I had in Edinburgh. All the food is unique and excellent. The portion size per menu is small, and two people ordered 4 dishes and were full. There is also a fusion Korean-style bossam menu, and the meat is really soft, a softness I have never experienced even in Korea. The staff's service was very good, but it was a bit difficult to understand because they spoke so fast. I highly recommend this as a place to have a memorable dinner in Edinburgh.

Just lovely in every respect. Delicious food, great service: you can easily see how they got onto the Bib Gourmand list. We loved the crab butter and the trout temaki especially, but everything we had was excellent. Great cocktails as well. We left completely full and satisfied, which can't be said of every small-plate restaurant! Would definitely return on our next visit to Edinburgh.

It was ok. The food sounded good but we found it to be heavily over seasoned. We couldn't even taste the crab in the soup. Also the service, while quick, was ok. Taking items off the table before being asked if we had finished is not good service in my opinion.

Noto is a restaurant offering incredibly innovative, modern Scottish cuisine. The dishes are served “to share” so that you can share the pleasures together. With four people you can try out a lot of things this way. Our highlights were the north sea crab, the beef tartar and the monkfish. Plus a totally committed and friendly service. - Perfect! When it comes to wines, there is still a lot of room for improvement. The drops on offer simply don't offer enough for the prices quoted.

What a great discovery! Every dish was really finger licking good! You can't make a wrong choice. To put forward a favorite, we choose the bing bread with the whipped tofu. Genius!

It'd become a favourite of ours since moving to Edinburgh. We always visit on special occasions and it's worth it. We like to sit at the bar as we can people watch and enjoy the environment. The crab butter is mainly why we go as its delicious. Small plates which are perfect for sharing so you can enjoy more of the menu. The wine and cocktails are amazing and we always finish with the malted ice cream dessert. We'll be back!

The food is good. The red-haired waiter (I don't remember his name) was extremely attentive and kind. On the other hand, the waitress who looks like Sister Mary from “Hocus Pocus” made it very clear that from the moment we sat down, she just wanted us to leave as soon as possible. Extremely rude.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing Food & Exceptional Service! I had such a wonderful dining experience at this family-run Turkish restaurant! The platter they served was absolutely delicious—packed with authentic flavors and generous portions. You can truly taste the love and care put into the food. What stood out even more was the service. The waiter (who I believe is the owner’s son) was incredibly hardworking, attentive, and kind. It’s always heartwarming to see a family pouring their passion into their business. His dedication alone made the meal even more special, and I was happy to leave a tip for such great service. If you’re looking for delicious Turkish cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere, this is the place! I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend!
