I'm not sure if the lady treats everyone like this on a Sunday morning. She shouted over a coffee order at the same time stating she has a lot of people to feed and we need to hurry. That moment we were her only customers. When a friend asked for more bread she said eat what you have on the table. It felt so rude. The other customers sat . She seemed very friendly with them. The only difference was that we were all black mix race. She made it clear she did not want to have breakfast with us. So that was the start of our Sunday morning of the Bank Holiday weekend. Also full English did not come with hash brown. That really upset me . The others had hash browns looking over. She was not interested if we enjoyed our stay. Its still on my mind one week later.

The welcome we received at short notice at Northover Manor, Ilchester was second to none. The can-do style of fitting us in a room on a bed and breakfast basis, was tremendous. All the staff and owner were so friendly and warm and we shall definitely return on our next trip to the Jurassic coast. The only drawback was we couldn’t stay longer. Breakfast was great and served with helpful conversation .. overall the experience was extremely positive on all counts. Thank you, everybody Richard & Dolores, Bath

We were a party of 10 adults and 2 small children for Sunday lunch. We arrived to a warm welcome and given a good menu for choice. Our food was beautifully presented and was of a very high standard. The staff were efficient and approachable with endless patience waiting for us all to make our minds up over the dessert menu! Faultless! Many thanks to Mark and the team for a wonderful lunch. We will be back soon!

A wonderful stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary in the place where we had the ceremony and celebration. It was so lovely seeing it again and reminiscing about our day and evening. Room 23 was lovely and a drink in the bar preceded a very enjoyable meal and bottle of wine. Relaxing in the lounge after our meal ended a perfect anniversary. All the staff were excellent and we departed after a lovely breakfast feeling very satisfied with our stay. Thank you all at Northover Manor. Our wedding 12 years ago was fabulous as was our stay for our anniversary.

I had been working all day and was hungry when I entered the restaurant at 7.15pm. Was provided with a menu. I know it was busy but it took 3/4 hour for someone to take my order after complaining. I was promised the meal would make up for the wait. It certainly did and the food was excellent. A nice touch that they provided me with a complimentary drink for my patience. Yes I will be back and thank you it certainly was worth the wait. Also the breakfast I had in the morning was excellent and just what I wanted.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We visited the restaurant for our wedding anniversary on the 20th August as it looked so lovely and a friend said the Sunday meal she had there was lovely. All seemed good when we first arrived, we were seated by the bar with some menus and then she came back to show us in to the restaurant to our table. We sat down and asked for a jug of water and was told she would fetch one for us. Our starters were brought and looked lovely. My husband ordered the pulled pork/black pudding quails egg and I had the vegan tapas. They were very well presented and tasted lovely. Unfortunately, the water never arrived and we finished our drinks and no one had come back to see if a)everything was ok b) bring the water or c0 if we would like any more drinks. We had planned to have some wine, but we were neither offered a wine list or had any wine glasses on the table! So as none of the waiting staff were around, I went through to the bar to ask for some more drinks and a jug of water. The water was brought through and one of the drinks, but the other drink was forgotten and the barman had to go back again and collect it. Things sort of went downhill from there. Our main meals came and again looked lovely and tasted ok. Our main issue with the main meal was that my husband ordered the trout with garden pea, broad bean & fennel risotto and basil and walnut pesto, which sounded great! However, what he got was trout on a bright yellow risotto with what looked like frozen mirepoix veg (carrot/sweetcorn/green bean & peas) minus the pesto and with no explanation as to the difference! My mackerel based main meal came out as ordered but the fish in both of the meals was a bit dry and a bit overcooked. The waitress at no time came in to the restaurant again to ask how things were or check on drinks, etc. When we finished and the ordered desserts, they both came out and looked lovely. The toblerone tart tasted really good and the banana and malt custard Eton mess was good although lacking a bit in banana. What was more annoying and downright rude & unprofessional was the fact that the barman came through just after we had been served our desserts and started to clear the other tables of cutlery and glasses and start laying them for breakfast, he then proceeded to start putting breakfast food (cereals. etc) out on a table and clutter about in a cupboard!! We were the only people left in the restaurant granted but he never asked us if we minded and to be honest he shouldn't have started this task whilst customers were still eating their meals in the restaurant! We hadn't just dropped in to the restaurant on the night, my husband had pre-booked our table and we were looking forward to a romantic meal for our wedding anniversary. The food standard was better than the restaurant and customer service standard. Indeed overall complete lack of customer service and although a few hiccups with the food, the overall food standard was good but the service did not do it justice. We definitely won't be going back and were very disappointed to have this experience as we had heard good things about the Sunday food. A very disappointing wedding anniversary meal and experience and overall wouldn't recommend because of this.

Good sized room and large bed. The food was excellent and freshly made. Reason for 4 rating was due to room location being quite noisy. My room was on the ground floor very close to the reception and a staircase, which meant you could here all the coming and going of the guest. Door was definitely not sound proof as you could hear everything that was being discussed. Shame really.

Tea lights on all the tables and multiple strings of fairy lights crisscrossing the ceiling made a fairytale atmosphere. We were staying just one night in a local B&B and the Northover was recommended as having a special Surf and Turf night. We booked and were glad we did because they got really busy shortly after we arrived. My wife had seabass and I had the Coley. Both were delicious, well presented and great choices.... especially for the price £20 for both of us.However, we were slightly disappointed that neither dish came with any real veg (come on Northover how much does a carrot or something cost?) and looking at the main menu we felt it was expensive. My advice is to look up the menu before booking to see if you find the prices on the main menu expensive or not or only go when you know there's a really good special on offer!

Lovely hotel, old fashioned rooms are quirky and cosy. Food was great for breakfast too. The worst thing about this hotel is a lady called Flic who works there - she is very rude (she took a bottle of water away from an elderly member of our group accusing her of having alcohol in the bottle with no compassion). She absolutely puts me off ever holding any occasion here. Every other member of staff is lovely and friendly, I'm not sure how she slipped through the net. Not normally one to complain but I'm not the only person that had a bad word or two to say about her.

We had a lovely room overlooking the back of the car park with views to fields and the hotels gardens which were in full Autumn colour. Our room was big with free standing furniture and a wall mounted tv - it was clean and fresh. However, the mattress on the bed was awful - it was like something out of a comedy where every time you moved it would make a springy noise - I thought the springs were coming through. Maybe a mattress topper would improve sleep quality. No hairdryer to be seen- luckily my oh is bald and I don't mind letting my hair dry naturally but in this day and age surely a hairdryer is an essential?? Lastly I absolutely hate these soap/shampoo dispensers - a nice quality shampoo, conditioner and shower gel selection would go miles to improve the bathroom experience! Shower was good and bathroom was immaculate.Breakfasts were great and the ladies who served us were very friendly and efficientWe had dinner one night in the restaurant which was lovely, very tasty and served piping hot.I think that the hotel is super it just needs a couple of tweeks to improve the guest experience - a family member has just moved to the village so we will definitely be back and would definitely stay at the Northover Manor again.

We went there for a function and it is a beautiful venue in the new 'barn' The walls have a film star theme which flows through the spotless toilets but that is the best bit. We tried to get a drink in the bar attached to the venue room but no beer, Tetleys tap empty so I asked and barmaid quoted lagers and didn't seem to know lager was not real ale! Hardly any juices so I settled for orange juice from thier jug with a vodka but it was served in a cheap thick kids glass and hubby had a Guiness, this was over £8! The food was a buffet, lovely mains but the pastry tart was so hard I had to break it to eat it as rock hard. No small plates either so sweet was on same plate as dinner. One jug of coffee, one of stewed tea and no water for the great range of teabags there. Also the tablecloth could of done with an iron! Staff? saw one only who was friendly enough. Shame as a great venue in a fab setting.

Having been born in the village and lived away for some considerable years but a person who has visited the village for the last 39 years to visit family I have seen the Northover Manor in good times and bad.Tonight we tried to book a meal in the restaurant for 7.30 pm but told 8 pm due to a large function which was fair comment. On arrival which was at 7.25 pm we were acknowledged and told about 7.50 pm we would given a menu etc which was completely fair. That happened as we sat over a pre dinner drink In the lounge. I was accompanied by my mother and son, who had just returned to the UK from a years training in New Zealand. The menu arrived it had four main dishes on it but no sides and the items presented were grossly over priced.I travel worldwide and live in London and must admit thought for the items presented eg marinated chicken breast and cous cous at £15.95 and no sides quite insulting and yes I eat in top restaurants and yes the Northover is a nice setting but hey ? Come on hardly tranquil or breath taking. We were told there is a specials board and it was presented eventually to my son when he asked the bar staff and he was left to present it to his nan and me his dad. Apart from pigeon and onion open pie it had basic steak on it.At this stage he said let us go this place is over priced and not value to money and the menu is sub standard, so we left. Like me he is well travelled and expects value for money and standards.I can't comment on the food as we left, but rest assured as a native of the village I will not be setting foot in the place again Very disappointed

Having stayed at Northover on a previous occasion, I had expected better. We arrived mid afternoon and parked in the crowded car park (busy I believe with lunch trade) noticing broken wine glasses which were obviously from an earlier function as there was still evidence of red wine in them. This, whilst being quite obvious to us had not been dealt with by the staff. The lady who greeted us and checked us in was, I have to say most pleasant and helpful. During check in we were asked what time we would be taking breakfast. Alarm bell No 1. Were we to be the only guests? We were shown to our room which was in what appeared to be the annexe. Alarm bell No 2. On a previous occasion we stayed in the Main building in a pleasant room. This time the room was drab and in obvious need of a makeover with peeling paint and an appearance of being quite dusty.Heading for the bar on our way out we noticed a solitary table made up in the bar area for breakfast. We were indeed the only guests which may have been part of the problem.Breakfast was OK but bacon showed signs of having been cooked some time previously. Not what I remember from my previous visit.Didn't bother to complain as it was hardly the fault of the lady running reception who seemed to be quite poorly supported.May investigate another of the local establishments on my next visit to Ilchester.

We were a nightmare group booked in for a whole family meal - babies, children, parents and grandparents all for an evening meal to celebrate a birthday and we arrived later than we said originally. Could have been a disaster! but no, thanks to everyone working at the Northover Manor. Our table was for us exclusively all evening so no problem that we were late (unlike so many places). We gathered together as we arrived in the bar - with a good choice of drinks on hand with efficient service and all needs catered for. The table, in part of the function room, was attractively set with high chairs provided, good quality crackers and serviettes. Courses were served quickly and efficiently and each one was a joy to behold with excellent presentation. Everyone in our party, without exception, commented on the excellent quality of our various meals bearing in mind produce, tastes and flavours - including the nuggets for the kids and the amount of food! The staff were extremely courteous and their aim was to make sure that everything was up to standard for us and that we were happy with everything. There was even an excellent disco provided to end off the evening, catering for all tastes - especially the 'olds' who came in to their own at that point! Many thanks to you all the Northover Manor for a truly great night..

After driving past a few times & always admiring it from the outside, we finally decided to give this lovely restaurant a go I had the Lamb Rump & it was absolutely beautiful my partner had the Ribeye steak, so tender & cooked to perfection, followed by a Creme brûlée & Apple Crumb again both were perfection. We will definitely be back.

We booked for Sunday Lunch on the strength of earlier reviews. Nice venue, friendly efficient service. Food, so so.I overheard another diner say he had been a couple of dozen times and never had a bad meal, I cannot say the same. My starter was listed on the menu as being with a citrus orange salad, a few leaves with a little citrus dressing was not what I expected, where was the Orange? The waitress took my plate back to the kitchen and it came back with more citrus dressing. That said the spiced sea bass was delicious.Husbands pork terrine was also delicious but as most places do, it was served with two small pieces of toast, more was needed but could not be supplied, again the waitress tried and brought more bread which was nice but too soft to spread the terrine.Main of roast beef was perfectly cooked and plentiful. My main of asparagus baked with tomato, onion, olives and haloumi was a mistake, the flavours did not work together.Vegetable sides were plentiful.Desert of strawberry and red peppercorn soup with strawberry and basil sorbet was delicious. We then asked for either filter or cafetière of coffee. The cafetière arrived and it was not drinkable, very very strong and bitter.Meal was approx £50, including a couple of soft drinks. This is a very picturesque venue but the acoustics meant we could hear every word of the conversations of other diners, even those at the other end of the room. A very noisy lunch.

Arrived with a party of four which included my son from London. Drink at the bar and shown into a lovely lounge to look at the menu. We were not rushed and there was a bit of discussion who was going to try what. Escorted into the restaurant by a lovely young gentleman. The food from start to finish was exquisite. My mum has been going there for quite a time on and off when people visit. I have to say congratulations to everyone for an excellent evening.

My wife and I spent two nights in the disability adapted room (room 9) in this comfortable village hotel. The car park is gravelled and had no marked disabled parking bays; therefore, at busy periods disabled customers could have quite a long distance to propel their wheelchair over a very difficult surface. On arrival the reception was welcoming and the procedure straightforward with friendly and helpful staff. The room was nicely decorated, clean and quiet with blackout curtains; however, that room was always very warm - even with all of the radiators completely turned off! Given the rate, I felt that the room's range of accessories were disappointingly lacking (shoe cleaning, tissues, telephone, etc) compared to similarly priced village hotels. The fully adapted en suite bathroom, like the bedroom, is rather tight for manoeuvring a wheelchair, limiting the suitability of the room to people who are capable of at least some mobility without a their wheelchair. Movement throughout the rest or the hotel is quite straightforward and I found no real obstacles to me in my wheelchair. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, although it's worth noting that the kitchen is closed for dinner on Sundays (but there are other options in the village just a short walk away).Breakfast offered options for most tastes but the preparation and service during my stay felt somewhat perfunctory. Dinner, on the other hand, was an enjoyable occasion in all respects. The staff were warm and friendly. The food was delicious, well presented and competitively priced. Overall, we had a pleasant stay in a comfortable room with, generally, very good service.

Appearances can be soooo deceptive. When I booked, I viewed the dining room and checked the required level access. The latter was great but, to my eye, the checked tablecloths, I thought, told me what to expect in the restaurant. How wrong can one be? As soon as we opened the menu, we knew this was completely different - unexpectedly so. Great choices, well described made choosing difficult. When the starters arrived, they looked so neat and enticing - obviously the kitchen enjoy their work. The main course, fish being offered on a Sunday saved me the inevitable veggie alternative to meat and was much enjoyed. My companion's roast beef was cooked to perfection, the right amount of pinkness and I was told it tasted absolutely delicious and was tender to boot. Perusing the dessert menu, we both agreed cheese would finish this repast delightfully - but there wasn't a mention of cheese. On enquiring, a selection of three really good cheeses were prepared, together with fruit and delicious and unusual biscuits. The dining room staff were attentive without being overweaning and we look forward to a return visit. We have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this establishment. Incidentally, on leaving, the door to the party room was open and this room looked so special with a lovely green background/outlook - would be lovely to visit a function here. Also loved the film buff touches subtly around and the loo seats are the best!

Had a family meal at the North over tonight and I must say it was one of the best meals I've eaten out in a hotel restaurant. My parents eat here regularly and have never had a disappointing meal. My husband and I visited for the first time and it certainly won't be our last! We have eaten in many restaurants all over the world but the North over gives you good, home cooked, honest food at great value for money. I would certainly recommend that you eat here - drive to Ilchester especially, it's worth it!

Stayed here whilst attending a course at the nearby Royal Navy Air StationStation. Overall it was outstanding. I need to emphasise, however, how stunning the Hake and Chips was. The best fish and chips I have EVER eaten, and I've been to Grimsby. It was advertised as a daily special. Which came as part of a three course meal. Starter Main and Desert for £14! What came out belonged in a £100 a head restaurant. The battered hake was deliciously accompanied by Sandfire vegetables and a few triple fried humongous chips. I can't reiterate enough, OUTSTANDING food.

I was part of a group to visit Northover Manor for our works Christmas do. The hotel and grounds are indeed charming and the function room a really nice space. However I feel they are fleecing diners when it comes to the food. Starter was a small coffee cup of soup, tasty but only a few sips worth and no soup spoon provided. Mains is a buffet, which is mostly cold. Nothing at all Christmassy about it except for the cold turkey. Couscous, sweet chilli chicken wings, fish cake balls, random pâtés???? And you don't want to be vegetarian, no signage at all and the foods were all mixed up and tongs used for everything....Pudding, well I decided Mr Kipling mince pies were not for me so chose the chocolate orange thing. Well if was not chocolatey or orangey and instead seemed to be just pure sweet condensed milk in a ramekin. Very poor, very cheap given the £25 a head charge. If you are looking for a decent meal, this is not the place.

We decided to have a meal out as a treat and thought we would give the NOrthover Manor a try. It always looks so appealing as you drive through Ilchester. The staff were warm and friendly, the restaurant was very welcoming and the menu was excellent. The food was served on slates and presented very well and all the courses (we had a set menu) were very tasty and lovely and hot! We felt very well looked after and left feeling we had received value for money and also had a lovely chat with the waitresses/waitors. Although it was not that busy when we went, everything was done to make us feel like special guests and I would definitely go again. Well done Northover Manor.

Firstly let me say, the food was outstanding, no complaint there, pricey, though you don't mind paying more for great quality, but it was the unfriendly rudeness of one particular staff member who has left a nasty impression with me. Sadly, this has overruled anything positive about the place and I won't be recommending the venue to anyone else, shame really, because the food was very good and the venue looked lovely. I believe the lady concerned may have been the events manager or something as we had an event there I attended and she seemed to be in charge, a very obnoxious, rude individual who should not be working in an environment with customers. With all the guests I attended the event with, they too had encountered this woman's harsh tongue, so definitely not me being over sensitive, I would say if you do choose to go here for an event, make sure you have a stiff upper lip and don't get upset too easily.

Considering we were choosing from a reduced menu for the evening, the food was fantastic - the pork belly especially was really, really good. The comedy acts were mixed (compere was brilliant) but not helped by the pi55ed up bunch at the back who were in danger of spoiling the show, although they did receive a number of good put downs.Looking forward to the next one!

This place needs to decide if it is a restaurant or a party venue; it cannot successfully pull off both simultaneously. When I booked I was not informed there was a large function being hosted by the hotel. This was unforgivable. The function was had very loud music and associated noise of drunken party-goers which ruined the atmosphere in the restaurant. The staff left the door to the bar open so many times I might as well have been eating in there. Service was poor, probably because they where also focussed on catering for the function. At least one other couple in the restaurant where obviously unhappy with the situation and mentioned this to the staff before leaving. The food was OK, although no better than that available at Waynes Diner a couple of miles East, and somewhat better value. Perhaps this place is capable of better, as some of the previous reviews allude to, but after this experience I will not be coming back to find out, especially when there are so many other good pubs & restaurants in the area that i know are good.

I went here with a small (7) group from work. Due to the lovely early evening weather we had a few drinks outside first before moving in. The staff interacted with us very well and helpfully provided menus whilst we where still outside. Once sat at our table the starters all came out and looked fantastic. I had the crayfish and it tasted as good as it looked. The mains didn't take too long to arrive after the starter had been cleared. Again all the mains looked superb and everyone enjoyed them. I had the goats cheese pasta which whilst being the least adventurous item on the menu still tasted great. Only two people had a sweet pudding with most of us going for the cheese and biscuits. The cheese was fairly local and tasted great but (like many places) there was not enough biscuits...strange. All in all really good food in a fine venue. Maybe the only fault was the portion were slightly small ( but not over priced). Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

We stayed on a 2 night KGB deal which made our enjoyable stay excellent value for money. We found all of the staff to be very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, an attitude which was obviously nurtured by the owner who was also very personable and we got the distinct impression that the staff all enjoyed working there. Our room was clean, spacious, well equipped and had a very pleasant outlook across the fields. Breakfast as with dinner was extremely good. We ate on both nights as we enjoyed the meal so much on the first night. The meals were freshly prepared, attractively presented and reasonably priced. A good varied wine list (also reasonably priced) was available and we enjoyed a complimentary bottle of wine with our meal on the first night as this was part of the KGB offer if we had a 3 course meal each. My only negative comment was that when the bar man explained this offer he did not say that it only applied to the first night and this was also not stated on the voucher therefore we were surprised to find a charge for our wine on the 2nd night on our bill at check out. That said we were happy to pay for the wine as we had enjoyed a relaxing 2 nights and felt that everything about our stay had been good value. I would have no problem recommending this hotel and will look forward to staying again should the opportunity arise.
