Incredible pastries and sandwiches. They also sell fresh breads, including a lovely poppy seed sourdough. Coffee is also great, and often served in pretty cups! We love stopping by when we’re in Ouseburn!

The cheesecake cruffin was fantastic! They have a great range of jarred items and bottled juices (loved the strawberry juice). The staff were lovely and very patient with us. See you at MMB!

Popped over for a couple of cinnamon buns. Def worth the effort and we'll definitely go back.

This is now my go-to coffee stop when on my bike. The staff DO know how to make a perfect flat white and if I’ve been a really good boy I treat myself to one of their delicious pastries - there is so much choice.

Great bakery with some lovely product. Coffee is very nice and I would recommend both the balsamic onion and cheddar toasties and the new York deli sandwich they are amazing followed by a cruffin

Cosy little place with nice food and good coffee. Pros: Great service, good coffee, very good bread/pastry and nice sandwiches/cold food. Minor drawbacks: Can get a little bit packed in rush hour with queues going all the way out of the door.

The absolute best! I feel very lucky to live 15 mins from such an incredible bakery but would travel hours if I had to. Lovely service and always coming up with new, creative pastries. 10/10 on all fronts.

I love this place! Great coffee, incredible bread and baking, great service. Their cruffins are one of the best things I’ve ever tried from any bakery. Also tried the kimchi grilled cheese and was blown away.

Lovely little bakery specialising in sandwiches, pastries, coffee, and bread. Staff are friendly and lovely. The toasties are fantastic, you can tell they use top notch ingredients; and you can visit their website to find out the suppliers. I recommend the Ham Grilled Cheese as the ham is absolutely delicious. Not to mention its location, on a sunny day sitting by the river, having a sandwich or pastry and sipping a coffee is just peaceful.

Really nice bakery, the coffee was delicious and the maple pecan pastry was 11/10. Really lovely staff too, so glad we passed this place!

Nice, compact space in a nice location along the water and close to the Quayside. There is limited seating inside (stools) and some benches outside. The items were tasty but pricey. The service and hygiene could be improved. The lady who served me put the bread straight onto the public counter and then put it in a bag along with other bits I had purchased that definitely weren’t clean enough to share a bag. Gross. I also had to wait in the queue as the person serving was finishing a personal conversation.

Been following Northern Rye for a few months on Instagram and everything looked incredible. Finally managed to take a visit and it was better than expected. The cruffin was a perfect blend of crispy, buttery and creamy, the pecan swirl was just so chewy, toffee like and nutty and the toasties were perfectly toasted. Will be visiting as often as I can! The staff inside were also very lovely and patient while we decided on what tasty treats to get. Update: actually visited northern rye many times and everything they do and make is delicious. Literally never been disappointed. Please go!

Pastries shouldn’t be this good y’know?

This is some bakery! Been meaning to drop by for a long time and finally managed to go visit at a weekend. Drove all the way from Glasgow and no regrets! Was thrilled with the quality as well as the variety. Plain sour dough and the seeded version were absolutely amazing. High quality products and great staff and ambience. Keep up the good job guys, will visit soon again!

What really makes a difference between Northern Rye and the others is the overwhelming evidence everyone involved deeply cares about this place and everything it produces. The quality of baked goods is the best I've experienced in the North east, and the staff is friendly and genuinely involved in providing excellent service. Superb bakery, great business.

Such a fantastic bakery! I first visited back in March 2021 when I was running past it and decided to grab a treat for when I finished. From then on we've been hooked and tend to drop in every weekend if not more. They make everyone feel welcome, especially our dog, pushing our a few croissant crumbs for him. They are also great with the kids, having a chat with them and peaking their interest in what has been made. The pastries are amazing, the bread spectacular and the sandwiches are on another level altogether. The vegan orange/ginger bun is something to savour every second of. I think my favourite though will always be the mini stollen buns they do at Christmas and gutted it isn't a standard item. Can't recommend this place enough, but you may have to queue.

Grilled cheese was mega.. and I’m a bit of a mince pie fiend, and those are the best I’ve ever had. Super busy on a Saturday morning so beware!

Had a New York focaccia, pretty disappointing. Focaccia was lovely, but was just crammed with some tasteless sliced meat, nothing 'new york' about it, and for £7.50, I expected better.

“Queues out the door” - says it all. Well worth it. Devine selection of baked goods!

Bread shops seem to overcook their bread and I just can't understand why they do this!!!???

Lovely and quaint little bakery, with absolutely bangin' fresh produce. The focaccia and the cookies are absolutely chef's kiss!

Been going around to all the local bakeries trying their sourdough so I was exited to find this little gem. I gave the white sourdough a 7/10, because it was soft, airy, had a crispy exterior, but slightly lacks flavour (not tangy or sweet) and they don’t have a slicing machine so you just get the whole loaf; although that is pretty standard and not everywhere offers it (however that would give it an extra point). Overall though very tasty so not complaining, just comparing. They also offer other breads, pastries, sandwiches, and coffee - once had a lemon curd cruffin and it was divine, absolutely 10/10. Exited to return and try more things.

Always stop here on my cycle for a cheese and caramelised onion bialy. Yum.

Artisan bakery with sweet/savoury goodies and hot/cold drinks. There are always queues to get in but a lovely independent with friendly staff. They also stock products/produce from other local independents too.

Every time we visit Newcastle we stop at Northern Rye. Our son and his partner showed us their favourite places and this was one if them. A gem of a bakery. Just wish they delivered in the UK. Ah, well - an excuse to visit more often.

For tasty baked breads and bread based snacks, try Northern Rye. We bought a French 🥖 Baguette and a Sourdough Loaf, which were very good. We visited at 2pm on a Saturday and there was still plenty of bread on the shelves, and it was still quite busy. This unending bread supply is probably due to the fact that they serve bread based food snacks all day.

Very glad I don't live any nearer. My wallet would be a lot lighter and I'd be a huge amount heavier. Insanely good cakes and pastries.

Northern Rye do not miss! My partner and I took their parents there when they came up from Cambridge and now they go back every time they come up. They even brought my partner's nan last time too! A family favourite, I think.

I read an article about Northern Rye stating it's the 6th best bakery in thr U.K - and I believe it The sourdough is unparalleled, don't bother going anywhere else The pastries are INCREDIBLE, you can afford to cheat your diet just this once, it's worth it They also sell various items like coffee brewing implements and are stocked full of items from other local businesses including a fridge with local food produce Love to see the local economy working together

Charming and friendly staff. The bread is fantastic and the environment fascinating.

Nice selection of grilled sandwiches and nice pastries, highly recommend this place. Not great for sitting in as not much space, but you can eat outside and they bring hot drinks and grilled sandwiches outside when ready.

Was visiting Newcastle for a few days, one of the best spots I found by far.

beautiful pastries, quite original flavours too. Had a tiramisu Cruffin (croissant muffin) which was very rich and delicious. Will be back. Bread looks amazing too.

Nice (and not salty thank heavens!) sourdough with rye bread. Also bought the cookies (oat and chocolate varieties) which are very nice.

It probably has the best looking (and tasting) croissant, pain-au-chcolat and pain au raisin I have ever seen.

This place is patisserie heaven, gorgeous delights as good as any Parisian equivalent.

Firstly everything I've had from here has been delicious. The only reason I've given it 4* rather than 5* is that I've never found it a particularly welcoming place to shop.

This place is incredible, we came here for lunch yesterday and got two very decent sized sandwiches, an almond croissant and two coffees very reasonably priced for what you get! I can see why it has 4.9/5!!!! The bakery has a very rustic homely passionate feel to it which a lot of bakeries unfortunately lack. 100% recommended. If you’re looking for a bakery that feels homemade and made with love then this is the place!

Amazing.... stumbled on this place today by accident, called in late afternoon for a coffee with my wife & son, three cakes & three coffees later! When we left I commented to the two ladies serving that they probably just served us the best cakes I think we've ever had! I also said how good their breads looked, they then sliced me a chunk off the Focaccia to take home & try - Unbelievably good bakery!

Went to Northern Rye based on a couple of recommendations. What a great place! From the bakery I found it difficult to choose between everything, it all looked so good.I went for a country sourdough, croissant, ginger and fennel drizzle bun and a baguette a sandwich, plus a coffee. Each thing was all so tasty! I also really like their approach to sourcing ingredients - info on their website- with emphasis on local, ethical, nutritious produce, such as organic flours and free-range charcuterie. Nice service, lots of other customers, a great place and not over-priced. I felt it was an honest place making honest food. Will definitely be on my list of places to go back to next time I’m in Newcastle.

Lovely bakery, recommend the chuffing and the cinnamon and orange bake. Toasted sandwich was also v good.

The only reason I'm not there daily is because I would probably eat myself to death. The best pastries in town, the most amazing cheese and kimchi grilled sandwich. RECOMMEND!!!!! if there is one place you go to in Newcastle it should be this. I still dream of their mushroom, hazelnut and truffle oil danish. And the last time I went there they happened to have the most mind blowing bread pudding the world has ever seen.

Lovely to find a local traditional bakery, Situated just a minute walk from the quayside near the canal locks in Ouseburn, everything is freshly baked, plenty of choice of breads, Danish pastries etc also filled baguette and homemade sausage rolls. Chilled drinks and freshly brewed coffee available. Well worth a visit.
