North South in York

Loved this place! Came for breakfast with a friend, got the smashed avocado toast with extra bacon and strawberry iced tea. The service was really quick and the staff were lovely :)

Slow service from taking the order to bring to table ...had a warm croissant done in a microwave not good for a pastry. The cappuccino was only warm because of the delay.. plenty of staff on But no leadership.. Not happy 😡

My wife and I stopped in at North South for breakfast in September 2024 before heading out of town on a road trip. Had a good sized breakfast that set us up nicely for the day. Delicious too. I had some kind of breakfast sandwich and my wife had avocado toast. Big pot of tea too. The cafe had a really cool independent vibe, cozy and chill. A good mix of tourists (like us) and townies. The place was bustling in the morning, which is a good sign. Service was very cheerful and attentive. I understand this place doubles as a bar in the evening, which is a great idea. Well worth seeking out if you are in York. Our hotel recommended it and we weren't disappointed.

Visited the cafe whilst on a weekend visit to York. Staff were very welcoming, the bacon croissant was gorgeous, very indulgent!

Los viernes y sábados por la noche ofrecen una gama limitada de platos pequeños, que parecían ideales El tipo que nos atendió fue muy amable y la comida (cuando llegó) era genial PERO, el servicio era demasiado lento. Les advertimos que íbamos al teatro. Nos dijeron que un plato elegido tardaría 15 minutos en prepararse, pero en realidad tardó 35 en llegar! Tuvimos que tragarlo en 5 minutos, luego corre al teatro. También era increíblemente fuerte en la habitación, así que tuvimos que gritar a través de nuestra pequeña mesa durante 4 horas. Realmente estropeó el comienzo de nuestra velada (por suerte la obra fue brillante, así que lo compensó) No sentí que estuvieran en la cima del servicio de comida de la noche. Es un espacio muy pequeño, funciona como un café durante el día. Tal vez demasiado ambicioso. Qué pena, pero no me arriesgaré a volver

Un comienzo o final encantador para una noche de citas, hay una fantástica gama de opciones de bebidas disponibles y una amplia selección de comida para comenzar. Por las noches, se recomiendan cócteles! El personal alegre y comprometido crea un ambiente muy cálido y amable.

El mejor café de York. En realidad casi el mejor café del Reino Unido. Después de 50 cafés muy ordinarios, encontramos esta joya. Gran servicio también.

Good vibes!! Really cute cafe with good food and really friendly service. Had the bacon, brie and cranberry toastie which was lush and huge!! Will definitely be coming back! Xx

Excellent breakfast with a coffee and bacon ciabatta

Loud music, not a great morning vibe. Jarring Asked for bacon on avocado toast. Bacon half cooked, flipped over top piece to find whit wobbly semi raw bacon. Thick cut also so it needs to be coloured and cooked both sides. When I ordered I asked for this. Arrived not fully cooked. Asked for more thorough cook on both sides. Waited for ages for it to return. Server lady exclaiming loudly my bacon was cooked and not raw? While concurrently stating the grill wasn't working.. Three people serving working there including owner? Was a very uncomfortable sit in, dark and a strange mix/air of arrogance and panic in the servers, including using the technology at front desk. I'm all for mix abilities but it was not a professional scene or what you would expect from an establishment who charged me €13 pounds for a raw bacon avo toast. In the end, bacon was brought incinerated and inedible. I just left but paid as I can see this place needs the support. No point flogging a dead horse as they say. Shame.

¡Qué lugar maravilloso! Llegué de camino a casa del trabajo muy cálido y acogedor cuando llegué pedí una olla de té que llegó muy rápido, muy impresionado ya que estaba muy ocupado, pero el personal seguía siendo muy sonriente y amable una fantástica elección de comida en el menú fue por el sándwich de tocino sabroso, pan blanco suave y el tocino estaba cocinado a la perfección! Y sirven té Yorkshire ¡qué más podría desear! Muy tentado por uno de los pasteles sabrosos, pero lo guardaré para mi próxima visita, que después de mi experiencia de hoy será muy pronto . . darle una oportunidad si su paso por! !

Called in for a quick coffee and bite this morning, quick service, lovely surroundings and friendly staff. Sausage ciabatta was fantastic, as were the coffees.

Just got told I can’t use my laptop for more than half an hour as ‘it will effect the vibe of the cafe..’ I was about to spend £25, work for an hour and leave. Crazy.

Service and the place itself is really lovely. The snacks and coffees are amazing but I honestly find it really expensive which has sadly put me off visiting more which is such a shame when everything else about the place is so good

Forget the chains, the best coffee,food and atmosphere is with the independent cafés. North and South is run by a lovely couple, one from the South and the other from up north, we visited for a quick coffee and sandwich, the coffee was tasted like a more expensive bean and the sandwich bread was obviously made that morning, it was good to see dogs allowed and the music and ambiance was chilled. Highly recommend if you are in York.

Best in York. Huge pots of tea, gorgeous carrot cake and brownies and great sandwiches. We always return here when visiting York (twice on this weekends trip!) Staff so friendly and welcoming. Conveniently located near the art gallery. Thank you to all at North South.

I really like this cafe, the coffee is great and have been loads of times. I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the experience today, though. As soon as I got my laptop out to do a bit of work I was immediately told they have a '30 minute laptop rule' - at first I didn't even know what this meant and I have never been told this anywhere in York before. I am very aware that independent cafes can't have people taking up tables for free all day - but I never intended to stay for longer than it took me to drink my coffee and if it had got busy I'd have left. A quiet word after I'd been there for a while would have been better maybe? Being told this straight away didn't really make me feel very welcome, to be honest.

North South is a cool little café bar close to Bootham Bar. Simple, smart and modern with a decent selection of cans and a couple of draught lines. A friendly place with table service that's certainly worth checking out.

Allergic to dogs and they allow large dogs in here without thought to others. In a day and age when "do you have any allergies" is overly used, this seems to not be a concern or worry here or many "local cafes". It's far too crowded, noisy, and if dogs are shaking, their fur is getting in the air directly where people are eating. I don't understand this ever increasing obsession with people bringing an animal everywhere they go. Dog owners have developed a form of entitlement, and these local cafes are enabling them. The food is good, but the atmosphere does not match. I would just order here from Deliveroo, but they don't even do that. I give this place a few years before it goes under like so many other local businesses, thereby allowing big chains to thrive with their consistent services.

Love the coffee and the wonderful folks who work at this little gem, it's a great option if you're looking for artisanal coffee, good music and a great atmosphere.

I thought that I would try somewhere different today so popped into North South which is just along Bootham. It was a new one for me but it looked warm and inviting. There is pavement seating at the front but I opted for indoors and chose a cosy seat by a low table just in front of the counter. The lighting is quite low and there’s a very welcoming atmosphere. I was a solo coffee drinker but felt very comfortable; it wasn’t a problem even though they were quite busy. I didn’t really look at the menu as I only wanted a coffee, but had seen some yummy options on the board outside and everything on the counter looked good. My americano with oat milk was just £3 which I thought was good value. There was a steady stream of new customers arriving whilst I was there so it is clearly very popular. Customers were across the age range and included families with youngish children and dog owners. As I paid I was able to pick up a free map of all the local independent businesses which I thought was a lovely opportunity to support other local businesses. I don’t often venture down Bootham when I visit York but I would definitely go to North South again.

Visited just before the university open day. Friendly welcome, and delicious food and drinks. So much so my son insisted visiting the next day.

Great little place just outside Bootham Bar. Busy and buzzing but we managed to get seats and enjoyed bacon ciabattas with tomato chutney. A big teapot for two was a great breakfast. Reasonably priced and cheerful staff.

The tea tastes like it was strained through Ian McKellens sock, and the “three cheese toasty” definitely only has one cheese in it. The staff make a visibly painful effort to be different, and succeed only in appearing like they partake in Just Stop Oil protests on their days off. If you don’t have an unkempt beard, you will feel out of place here. The charity shop next door has some decent stuff though: we bought a lamp and a pouffe.

Visited the place as I had 20-25 mins till a meeting, never expected that a wee espresso and slice of ready cake could take 15- 20 mins to be served. Ended asking to put it in a takeaway cup. Main meal in a restaurant takes 20 mins to be prepared, not an espresso.

It was OK. Charged 1 pound for glass of tap water. Sausage sandwich not very hot. Would not go back.

Nice coffee in a nice coffee shop some interesting beer on the tap . Went for The Reuban sandwhich and The Reuban Toastie. Shared both and despite the size of the sarnie , the toastie took it.

I was at York with a couple of friends on a Saturday and went here for an afternoon tea. We ordered coffee and some pastries. They were really amazing. Especially the pastry was exceptionally tasty and one of the best I've ever had in the UK.

What a lovely little cafe, beautiful coffee and hot chocolate,food very good, excellent staff, was in York for 3 nights called in everyday. They also sell beers and wine and open until late definitely worth calling in highly recommended 👌

A late supper with friends, turned into a fab Ploughman’s with wine! Served by a lovely Canadian lady, the food was really delicious and well presented, with accompanying wine suggestions. Gluten free bread available too!

Found this little gem along from our hotel. I can honestly say its the best latte I've ever had, forget those franchise places, go here! The owner is attentive and looked after us so well. The breakfast ciabatta was soooo good it was delish. Loved the decor and the small touches like pillows for comfort. Beautiful place, highly recommend

We had soft drinks, cocktails, coffee and sharing board. All were excellent as was the service. Service was attentive, knowledgeable and polite without being intrusive, cocktails were both classics well done and interesting alternatives, food was fresh, value and portion control of well selected ingredients was on point. Ambience of surroundings, music selection and level were great. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Would recommend as a one stop shop for quality coffee, cocktails, lunch, dinner or dessert.

Not bad value by today's standards at £5 something for large Americano and orange and almond cake. Coffee good; would have liked a dollop of cream with moist cake. Glad to see toilet too, which not all places have.

I can’t recommend North South enough, it’s a great independent establishment in York. Their food, drinks and atmosphere is perfect. What really makes the place is the staff, excellent customer service, nothing is too much for them to do. What also keeps tempting me back is their brownie/blondie selection, especially the Jaffa cake and Jammie Dodger ones! Definitely check this place out if you’re in York!

Disappointed this morning with our visit for breakfast. Lovely table outside, asked for a latte and pot of tea. Waiting time was long for a small order. Drinks came with no milk, no sugars etc. we also asked for water, given glasses but no water. Two avo on toast to eat however would have expected more than one piece of bacon for the additional £1.50. £8.50 was a lot to pay for one slice of bread. No condiments provided either. Not sure if it was a staff issue but there were lots of take out customers hanging around for a long time waiting for their orders also. Could do better

Friendly and relaxed, this has quickly become my go-to as a resident of York. Fantastic place to take an hour out of your day. Excellent coffee, the toasties and pastries are superb and the smaller cheese platter is a perfect indulgence. Staff are lovely and equally welcoming to everyone from groups to singletons. My loyalty card is well used!

Well where do I start. After yesterday's disaster of a lunch in another York Eatery that will remain nameless, we decided to try our chances with North and South. So glad we did, location, premises, food, staff, service and price were all 100% spot on. Our waitress was so attentive and chatty, and when she served our dogs with treats before asking for our order we knew we were on a winner (yes the restaurant is dog friendly. We had a mix of Tomato Humus with sourdough bread, Pork Pie and chutney, Veg Curry pie and pretzels. Food was absolutely to die for, very tasty and fresh. We will definitely return here next time we are in York (we travelled from Fife Scotland). Give this place a try folks, you WON'T be disappointed.

This place has the greatest coffee and the best staff. Today’s visit was a pleasure due to Sam who is the most engaging person and is a credit to the establishment. A ray of sunshine.

Slight disappointment by this place as from the reviews I had higher expectations. The staff are friendly enough but unfortunate lack attentiveness. I had to call the waitress everytime I needed anything as she wasn't interested in looking and at one point I had to walk up to the counter instead as unfortunately I couldn't trust I'd get the waitresses attention quick enough. I'd saw a review for the mocha being really nice but it was average. The food was alright, had the 3 cheese toast but overpriced in comparisons to other places I tried locally. Unlike I'll visit here again

Lovely people, really happy to help you and a sense of humour. Great price. Didn't finish my tea and had no issues putting it in a takeaway cup for me. Cannot fault the place. Had the pesto and mozzarella toastie and was beautiful

Stopped for breakfast, tasty, filling, simple food done really well. I had a flat white, iced water, and a big bacon and chutney sandwich for less than a tenner. Marvellous! Great Music and Wi-Fi too.

Cute cafe in Bootham offering coffee, cocktails, and beer. Coffee is delicious and strong, far from watered down. Nibbles, cakes and sandwiches are available. Small so wouldn’t recommend holding tables for longer than an hour. They have a 30 min laptop policy which makes sense for the size of the establishment. Wifi is available! Pet and family friendly. Definitely recommend for those local to Clifton and Bootham.

We were staying in York for a couple of nights and this cafe was next door to where we were staying. Such a lovely place - the staff are just great and we very much enjoyed the platters and wine! We only went in the evening but they are open all day. Very much recommend you seek this great place out.

A lovely little spot on a busy thoroughfare in York. Delicious coffee, good wholesome snacks, and a gentle, efficient service from nice people. If you get the chance, try the bacon, brie and tomato ciabatta. A huge sandwich, with a huge taste! Well worth a stop for a coffee and nibble if you are passing! Update: Feb 2023. North South is a great place to eat and/or drink in the beautiful city of York. Staff are super friendly and accommodating. Food is amazing and portion sizing excellent. I had grazing board which was plentiful and delicious. My other half had 2 pies (yes 2!) which also met with expectations. Very dog friendly. It’s a shame we don’t have this little gem near to where we live. Will definitely return on our next trip to York.
