Brew and Brownie in York

I visited Brew & Brownie during a quick day trip to York, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. With “brownie” in the name, I obviously had to go for a brownie and coffee — and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Rich, gooey, and perfectly paired with a smooth cup of coffee. A friend of mine recently visited York and I recommended it to her too — she loved it just as much as I did. The place has such a charming design, the staff are warm and welcoming, and the location couldn’t be more convenient. Great vibes, great people, great treats. What more could you ask for? Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in York!

Flies on the buns on an open counter. Ordered 3 drinks to sit down and was asked to wait outside for our takeaway order. Absolutely shocking and never been made to feel more unwelcome at an establishment.

The pancakes had an aftertaste, but the brownie was really good. They put just a little latte in the cup, and the whole cup was filled with ice

Really really fresh breakfast that is big enough to share. We had the avocado toast and eggs on toast. Both were fantastic. And, you can look out the window and see medieval ruins.

Obviously the brownies were fantastic, but so was the coffee and the bacon roll I ordered for takeout, served with a smile by a friendly team. Brew and Brownie is on my list for future visits to York. I would definitely recommend as a little treat or a morning coffee ☕ 🍰

We arrived at the restaurant at around 9:00 a.m. There was no need to wait in line. The food was very delicious and the portions were very large. As expected, the queue was always long.

There were queues in front of this shop before it was opened on Saturday. We came back at a later time and could not be seated. Therefore, we took out some brownies, lemon cake, ans coffee. They were all delicious.

The best porridge I’ve ever had, coupled with delicious and characterful filter coffee.

Stopped in for coffee while enjoying a day in York. We don’t like chains and enjoy to find more individual venues, and what a find, Brownie and Brew Bakeshop! Great coffee, good and strong but not bitter, fab cake particularly the dark chocolate brownie my husband chose. ….. if only we had had an excuse to have one of the delicious looking toasties or quiche but unfortunately just could not justify at the time of our visit. Would strongly recommend!

We had to wait in a short queue outside on a Sunday morning but it was worth it! When we got inside the servers were lovely and our food and drinks came very quickly. All we had was delicious👌 I definitely recommend this place for a breakfast/brunch but be prepared to queue!!

Long waiting time resulted from shortage of staff. The only one waiter had to finish making other customers’ coffee before attending customers in the queue. Queued for 20 minutes and had to leave to catch a train.

Lively,busy place. They have a lot of choices. It is quite rich bakes but if that’s what you like then it’s definitely the place for you.

Absolutely fantastic cafe serving all day brunch. We had the granola bowl and bacon pancakes and both were exceptional! Great coffee too! Will definitely be back :)

What can i say! Fantastic! Brekkie was on the sweeter side base on my selection but it was pretty well done! Had pancakes w maple and the french toast (seen in pictures) Coffee was great and chai Latte was done well too. Service was swift and they were accommodating with us for the baby high chair. Went super early on a weekday hence there were seats but it filled really fast. Its not the cheapest option but the food was good. So its worth a visit!

Brew & Brownie clearly know what they are doing, with two locations seconds away from each other I recommend them both! The first one Google takes you to was wonderful but completely booked out which is understandable, I highly recommend trying the other location just to the right of the shop if you're looking at it because that felt more open and spacious even though we just got more takeaway cake from there, there looked to be sooooo many more beautiful pastries, bread and sandwiches 😍 the staff at both locations were also so so lovely! We insanely good slices of carrot cake and also a lemon or orange citrus cake both were fantastic and the coffee was brewed perfectly too! 10/10 B&B!

There is a queue outside for a reason. Just a delicious breakfast with very friendly staff at a reasonable price. The vegan breakfast tacos were outstanding, probably one of the best breakfasts I've had. The waitress was very friendly with the kids and the food was prompt. Couldn't recommend any higher.

Very busy cafe. We managed to get seated straight away but many were waiting whilst we ate. Full breakfast and pancakes with Berry and yogurt. Absolutely amazing all round.

So heard alot of great things about this place especially from my family so we thought we should fo and give it a try. Staff was friendly and the atmosphere was decent and relativelty relaxed. We order the French toast which was alright and me and my brother went for the pancakes which tasted good but were very heavy due to the amount of toppings on it. The Hashbrowns were actually very good and tasted great and some of the toppings of the french toast made it taste better too. Overall a decent experience if your in York you should try it out also the staff were on their feet the whole time and were awesome oh and the eggs with bread were alright but the bread was fresh and tasty

What a gem of a wee cafe in York! Discovered it on our weekend trip when we popped in for cake and coffee. Cream egg brownies were amazing as was my chai latte and elderflower and mint sprintz and my partner's cappuccino. Returned for a full English a day later and was not disappointed! Very generous portions, delicious flavours, home made baked beans and some of the best bread we have ever eaten. A highlight of the trip for sure and making us wish it was our local cafe!

Incredible food, we went for breakfast and it was super busy when we went. My wife and I both got the French toast and it was absolutely worth it if you can manage to get a table.

The brownies are excellent, service is really polite, and the menu items are large portions and worth the money. Highly recommend!

Lovely cozy spot right across from the museum gardens. Quite busy, but we were fortunate enough to find a table for three quickly. What we ordered: 1- the fluffy pancakes with maple syrup and blueberries : 5/5! This was my favorite thing. They were so fluffy and tasty. 2- Avocado toast: 5/5! (My cousin ordered it and loved it! She said the avocado was by flavorful! 3- hash browns: 4/5, solid hash browns, nothing special. 4- iced tea: 4/5, very nice but a bit too sweet for my liking. 5- Americano: solid cup of coffee , not citrusy which we liked. 6- chai latte: my tea enthusiast friend said it was “meh”. Overall: I would come again! I want to try the French toast!

We been coming back and forth to York for a few years and every time their been a queue outside so this this we thought we try we went for a takeaway cake 🍰 it did not disappoint we had a blondie and Terry hot chocolate and omg it did not disappoint!! Definitely be back this trip.

Fantastic cafe, lovely food and service. Very polite and kind staff. Food was delicious and cooked amazingly. Only had to wait for a table for ~5 mins as there was a very quick turn-around - well worth the wait.

The prettiest matcha I have ever purchased was at brew & brownie on 25/03/25 (taste was also great) really kind and friendly staff too! Whoever made this drink deserves a raise.

Fantastic experience, food was superb. Staff were very friendly. All round great food, big breakfast was fabulous. Cakes and coffee, delicious. So good we visited twice in three days. Don't miss the opportunity should you be in York. Can be a queue, at busy times, but it moves reasonably quickly. Definitely returning for a third time when next in York.

I had a lovely Kinder Bueno cookie pie, which was very rich, but outstanding in taste. I really enjoyed my experience here, and would certainly come again.

Cakes were the highlight, and the brunch was pretty good. They could probably do with another front of house worker though, as service was a little slow at times.

Lovely tasty homemade food. Service very friendly and prompt. You may need to queue during budy periods, but it is worth it.

Great food and service. The short wait outside for a table to become free was definitely worth it. The freshly squeezed orange juice was a perfect choice for a refreshing drink early in the morning. The pancakes were amazing (banana, Nutella and caramel) on top of that the staff were polite, attentive and added to the overall positive experience! Would highly recommend and next time I'm in York I will definitely return and sample their cake and cookie selection!

Small little cafe so can get busy quickly. They have takeaway options. Cakes looked lovely but only had breakfast which was really nice. Lovely thick bread for Eggs Benedict. Close to train station and opposite museum park. Car parks within walking distance as well as minister

Unfortunately didn't get to eat breakfast here as it was so busy and was clearly popular, but we did pick up some pastries and they were delicious! Would 100% recommend their stuffed cookies too!!

Brunch on a Monday... Little que outside tells you this place is popular...... And rightly so. Had eggs beny and a flat white... Utterly amazing. Will definitely go back when in York.

The service is lovely, very helpful. I was so full that I didn’t get a chance to try the food or the pastries which looked so lush! But the coffee and tea were so good, just what I needed! Loved them!

Stunning bacon and black pudding

We googled "best breakfast in York" and this place came up so we went. When we got there at 9.50am there was already a queue outside, so we knew it must be good! It wasn't just good, it was incredible. I had the veggie breakfast (and I'm not veggie) as I really fancied it and it tasted soooo delicious. My mum went for the sweetcorn fritters - also a big win. The coffee was great, the staff were friendly and it was warm. We will definitely return and would recommend this to anyone!!

there’s always a lineup not sure if it is worth the hype. The pancake is OK, is a bit dry and they charge extra for syrup. They have a separate shop for take outs - will definitely come back again. Probably won’t return for dine in tho.

Brownie and Brew is one of my favourite cafes! The brunch American pancakes are some of the best pancakes I've ever had and the freshly baked scones are amazing as well. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is really cosy, especially when I visited during the wintry December. I went back every morning during my York trip to get breakfast there.

Quite simply THE BEST BREAKFAST IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! I am a 56 year old vegetarian and the vegetarian breakfast was absolutely outstanding. Every single element was cooked to perfection and complemented each other.

Amazing coffee with INCREDIBLE coffee art. Food was unreal, one of the best breakfasts ever. Staff were also incredible lovely.

If you want to have a particularly good breakfast, this is the right place. With a rich menu to choose from, you will surely find your favorite breakfast. NB large portions 🙂

Food was stunning!! Beautiful. But our experience was ruined by staff asking us to move tables mid way so they could sit a 3 at our table. Madness. Disappointed. Won’t return now unfortunately.

first time ive had the dark arts coffee and i thought it was nice. drink was very well made, grounds and beans weighed out etc and correct temp of milk for the flat white. kudos

Lovely brunch! I had the sweetcorn fritters, which were exactly what I wanted, perfectly complemented by the avocado and tomato relish. I added a little seasoning, but just my preference. My partner, celebrating her birthday, had the pancakes with caramelised banana, which she loved. The coffee was excellent, and the fresh orange juice was spot on. There was a short queue, but it was worth the wait for the food and service. A very pleasant experience and highly recommend!

Best mocha I've ever had and super friendly staff.

To be honest I don't understand the hype. Luckily we didn't have to wait in line. My boyfriend and I both ordered an English breakfast here. It was okay. Nothing special. The people working here were very kind and helpful. The cafe was a bit too noisy for our liking.

So delicious that we came back twice in our three day stay! The pastries are excellent. As an American living in the UK for 15 years, these are the best American style pancakes I’ve had in the UK. All the breakfast options were excellent. The staff were exceptionally friendly and efficient. Very skilled in serving so many people at once with care. Highlight of our stay in York.

My sister and I came here for breakfast and the food was delicious and the staff were exceptional in service - special thanks to Francesca who was delightful. Wish we were here in York for longer but we will be back next time!

The best breakfast I ate during my trip. English breakfast with ingredients that are not excessively fatty as often happens. Stellar porridge.

We queued outside and the waitress was nice, friendly and apologetic even though it was not her fault at all. The white hot chocolate here is to die for. The pancakes are also very nice with generous toppings (I got a sausage on the side with mine which was quite expensive ...!) . My boyfriend had the full English which he said was really good too. Would recommend :)
