Brew and Brownie in York

Quite simply THE BEST BREAKFAST IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! I am a 56 year old vegetarian and the vegetarian breakfast was absolutely outstanding. Every single element was cooked to perfection and complemented each other.

first time ive had the dark arts coffee and i thought it was nice. drink was very well made, grounds and beans weighed out etc and correct temp of milk for the flat white. kudos

Lovely brunch! I had the sweetcorn fritters, which were exactly what I wanted, perfectly complemented by the avocado and tomato relish. I added a little seasoning, but just my preference. My partner, celebrating her birthday, had the pancakes with caramelised banana, which she loved. The coffee was excellent, and the fresh orange juice was spot on. There was a short queue, but it was worth the wait for the food and service. A very pleasant experience and highly recommend!

Best mocha I've ever had and super friendly staff.

To be honest I don't understand the hype. Luckily we didn't have to wait in line. My boyfriend and I both ordered an English breakfast here. It was okay. Nothing special. The people working here were very kind and helpful. The cafe was a bit too noisy for our liking.

So delicious that we came back twice in our three day stay! The pastries are excellent. As an American living in the UK for 15 years, these are the best American style pancakes I’ve had in the UK. All the breakfast options were excellent. The staff were exceptionally friendly and efficient. Very skilled in serving so many people at once with care. Highlight of our stay in York.

My sister and I came here for breakfast and the food was delicious and the staff were exceptional in service - special thanks to Francesca who was delightful. Wish we were here in York for longer but we will be back next time!

We queued outside and the waitress was nice, friendly and apologetic even though it was not her fault at all. The white hot chocolate here is to die for. The pancakes are also very nice with generous toppings (I got a sausage on the side with mine which was quite expensive ...!) . My boyfriend had the full English which he said was really good too. Would recommend :)

Great location on the way to the station from town, perfect for grabbing a quick snack after a day out. Staff were friendly and there's a great selection of cakes on the counter, as well as hot and cold drinks (not that you'd know from the photo - my friend and I just have similar taste...)

Brew & Brownie was a delightful surprise during our recent 2-night stay in York. We felt incredibly lucky to stumble upon this charming coffee shop. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was friendly and efficient. But what truly made our visit unforgettable were the pancakes – absolutely divine! Light, fluffy, and perfectly cooked, they were the ideal way to start our day.

Great food served by very efficient, friendly staff, even when busy which it was the day we tucked in. The full English breakfast was 1st class as were the pancakes, French toast etc. The takeout pastries were a massive temptation even when fully satiated. If you’ve not eaten there this place really should be on your “to visit” list.

Found this cute brunch place with some great dishes. I had the s'mores French Toast (which is their special) and my hubby had the Big breakfast. FYI they don't swap things for brekkie which was a bit annoying as my hubby can't eat beans but food was still delish. Drinks were also fab, i had the chai latte and hubby had the mocha, we both really enjoyed. Jake was super friendly and helpful

Really great quality food. Very popular and for good reason. The avocado on sourdough toast was really nice - better than Bettys! Didn't try the cakes but they all look fantastic.

The food is very good, the savory dishes are hot, the service is relatively quick but there is a wait to be seated at peak times, sometimes 45 minutes. The establishment offers sandwiches and some simple, hot food with a large selection of sweet pastries. For those with a computer, these are only permitted for half an hour and only during less busy hours. It also offers a variety of sweet drinks and coffees. They don't sell alcohol.

Brew & Brownie in York serves one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had in the UK—no doubt about it. From the moment we walked in, it was clear this place takes pride in its food. Even the baked beans in the English breakfast were a standout; they had a flavor you don’t find anywhere else. I ordered the vegetarian breakfast, and every single item on the plate was packed with incredible taste. I was genuinely surprised at how good it all was. One thing to keep in mind: on weekends, there’s usually a queue. We waited about half an hour for a table, but now I understand why—it’s absolutely worth the wait. If you’re in York and craving breakfast or a pastry, Brew & Brownie is the spot. It’s the kind of place that leaves you planning your next visit before you’ve even left.

Lovely staff, great food, would highly recommend

I’m sorry but this was absolutely grose. It said online they use free range eggs but the scrambled eggs tasted like what you get on an airplane or hotel buffet. Batch cooked and tasteless. It was like they’d mixed the eggs with milk or something. It wasn’t two eggs freshly scrambled. The piece of toast was practically a loaf of bread. Wish I hadn’t come here, so disappointing.

Wonderful, great hot food and the cakes are amazing

Food was subpar with no flavour anywhere on the plate. Whilst I enjoyed the ingredients it was not by any means a well made breakfast. Both of our coffees were underwhelming.

Had a lovely brunch here, very delicious and beautiful! The full stacks of pancakes are more filling than you might think, but you can choose a half stack instead, which I should have done 👀 Great coffee with gorgeous latte art, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. You may have to queue outside during peak times as it's a small venue, but it's worth the wait!

Encantador café y huevos benadict, el estilo asiático benadict fue un punto culminante. Hay una hermosa selección de productos horneados junto a la ventana. Every time we come to York, we have to visit Brew & Brownie. Its always excellent. Great latte and chocolate orange hot chocolate. Superb lemon and berry shortcake and rocky road. Lovely, quick, friendly service.

Well what a shame! Queue out the door so thought was going to be fab. Cane back later there was a table inside with bench seating behind available. There was 4 of us. The guy next to our table was sitting on his own working on his laptop .Asked if we could sit there. The Barista said he needed to check with his manager, strange but ok. The manager came a lady who was rude like a matron! She proceeded to tell us we couldn’t sit at that table! When we asked why she said there wasnt enough space when there was plenty. That it wasnt fair to other customers. Seeing as all 4 of us own cafes/ coffee shops/restaurants we were shocked! Its not a michelin restaurant and i dont want to squash in next to anyone there was plenty of room. We ordered coffees and cakes to go, the coffees took ages to Come! The brownies where good , the flirentine not so much, needless to say it was terrible customer service and we will never return.

Good food, lovely drinks, good music and overall great atmosphere. Well worth the 20 minute wait outside, would go again.

Fantastic very delicious breakfast. On holiday we always try to not go back to the same restaurants to see more places, but these days we have eaten breakfast in the same place. Look at the pictures then you will find out why.

Best breakfast in York! Fresh and tasty, worlds away from the old greasy spoon breakfasts. Great choice of both food and drinks, topped off with exceptional service. The cakes look out of this world for anyone with a sweet tooth. Highly recommend and well worth the 10 min wait for a table.

Excellent option for a delicious breakfast in Edimburgh, is a small place so you might need to wait to get a seat but the waiting worth.

Came here for some breakfast whilst on short trip to York. Massively overpriced , the bill was close to the same cost as my evening meal the night prior and that wasn’t my family or I ordering anything other than some basic sandwiches and tea. If going for some food just make sure you’re prepared for a hefty bill.

Stood in a wee queue for this and it was well worth the wait , oh what a delight in food . My grandson had pancakes with bacon , I had a stuffed cookie absolutely delicious x

Brew & Brownie estaba lleno, sin asientos, así que bajamos 2 puertas a la Brew & Brownie Bakeshop, que abrió en 2027. Son tan populares que solo quedaban unos pocos asientos aquí también. Tienen pan Haxby Bakehouse y una fantástica selección de pasteles. Un poco decepcionado con mi Americano, pero el servicio era muy bueno.

Justo lo que estábamos buscando! Fabulosa comida con un gran ambiente. Interesante menú con algo para todos. Puedes entender por qué la gente estaba haciendo cola para entrar.

Cosy little place, serving great coffee and food. We went for the sweetcorn fritters and the apple crumble pancake stack and both were lovely. My latte was particularly good, with super smooth steamed milk making for a great texture. The service was excellent.

Great food but experienced bad customer service. Just asked water but got it when i asked second time and after 10 minutes. They served water to everyone without asking for it. But for me. I asked twice and waited nearly another 5 minutes. If in case of emergency, what they will do. I don’t understand. I thought of coming back, only for food But after this incident No i don’t want food where i don’t have respect

Lovely wee café with a few vegan choices that all looked delish. Went for an avocado toast with blush tomatoes and the sourdough was very good and portions were big. I also went for a lemon meringue muffin to take away and it was stunning! Excellent pastry so tasty. Would defo recommend this place 🥐

If you're searching for delicious savoury and sweet, look no further. The specials menu is out of this world, with The London Fog providing a taste explosion in your mouth, and pumpkin french toast perfectly balancing salty sweetness. But the big brew brioche sandwich on the regular menu is my favourite, and the staff are super chill about any special requests. Beware, even on a rainy Monday morning there was a queue to be seated, but it was well worth the wait!

Enjoyed a lovely hot drink and treat here with my partner. The staff are all incredibly friendly and efficient, and the drinks/cakes are presented impeccably, and the prices are incredibly affordable, especially for students. We will definitely be back to sample the hot food menu.

Cold morning and had had to wait 40 minutes on a freezing station for my train. Nipped in for a hot chocolate and they do soya milk and dairy free hot chocolate! The drink was delicious and the service was top class. I could barely feel my fingers so struggled to pay and the lady was so polite. I thought I might have to wait a while for my drink but it was done nearly immediately. Nice and hot but not nuclear. The cakes looked divine. Will be back! Thank you.

Very popular little café and I can most certainly see why, the food and cakes are delicious. We visited twice during out stay in York. We tried both savoury and sweet options and they were amazing, would definitely recommend getting there early if you want to be seated at their main café as it gets extremely busy.

I keep thinking about the sandwich I ate on the last day I left York. The outside is crispy, the inside is moist with melted cheese, and the tomato chutney is sweet. It's the best sandwich I've ever had. Also, the coffee had a bitter taste, but it was the best coffee I had in England. (I haven't been to many cafes, but I don't think British coffee is that good)

A great spot for a quick breakfast. It's a small shop, so it can get crowded, but the staff are very kind, and the pancakes are fluffy and filling.

Fantastic breakfast/brunch. The stack of American pancakes was brilliant - fluffy, slightly sweet and very fresh - and the best ones I've found in the UK by far. Cannot recommend this for pancakes nearly enough, as there's nowhere else quite like it. Since I first reviewed 5 years ago, my opinion hasn't changed, as they're still great and the staff are lovely. I recommend arriving a bit early so you can queue, as it's incredibly popular!

Recently stayed in York for a night and given the great reviews we thought we’d try Brew and Brownie for breakfast. Arrived just before opening to find a queue waiting for it to open. Seated quickly and staff were on top of all orders quickly. Food was great and too filling to try any of the brownies or other tasty looking treats. Would return.

When was the last time you have been at a restaurant where nearly everyone takes pictures of what they about to eat. This is definitely the place to do it! We were quickly greeted on a very busy morning with a smile by Francesca. A perfect way to start our day in York. You get the feel that every meal was prepared with passion and care. You must unfortunately ignore a previous nasty one star review that devastated the entire staff. They even reached out to them and they never responded. So get to this restaurant early to avoid the lines to get in. If you have to wait a bit, it’s definitely worth the wait and will add to your memories of a good time in York.

Went with friends but received no service and was ignored, a bad start to the day, which was disappointing.

I would rate no service for this restaurant because I was eager to try the food here based on the good Google reviews. Ridiculously, when I walked into Brew and Brownies (the smaller one, as there are two), the staff who saw me pretended to be busy without offering any greeting, despite there being no other guests present. I initially thought the staff might be shy or cold, but after minutes, they warmly greeted two other guests who had just arrived. This difference in treatment was quite shocking and disappointing. It’s a very interesting restaurant, but not in a good way.

Best full English I’ve ever had. Fresh bread was to die for as well as home made beans. Everything was perfect! Must go if you’re visiting York.

Racism and discrimination experienced at this restaurant. A very disappointing experience at this restaurant due to the behavior of two staff members. During our brunch, we received no service—neither verbal nor non-verbal—from these individuals. From the moment we arrived, they avoided eye contact, failed to acknowledge us, and generally seemed uninterested in providing any form of service.

When I come back to York, this is the place I'll come first. Lovely cuppa and brekkie

Arrive early to avoid the queue! This little Cafe is really popular for a reason...it's great! Best eggs in England, and pancakes so fluffy they have to weigh them down with lashing of maple syrup. Fast friendly service just the icing on tip. Many many thanks.

Average place, there are a lot of options for the food, but I would expect more from the taste of it. The place is tiny so it gets crowded really quickly. They have a laptop policy so no way to work here. It's understandable given the place is so small, however I would expect a more creative solution.

Was staying nearby and this popped up in a search of great places for breakfast, I tried to visit but queue just to get in was huge!!! Thankfully it was quieter later on so popped in for some brownies to eat on my journey home, definitely the best brownies I've had. Not surprised the queue was so large, will try again for a table next time I visit

We popped in here for brunch during our visit to York, and the welcoming staff made our experience really enjoyable. Our food was delicious with generous portion sizes that kept us going whilst we walk around this charming historic city. Highly recommend.

Lovely little coffee shop with great selection of home made cakes and toasties. Had the most delicious truffle roasted portobello mushroom toastie on sourdough + a passion fruit lemonade.

I came for a quick breakfast before heading to the library in the city center for work. Since I arrived shortly after they opened, I didn’t need to queue. If you prefer that too, I suggest coming right when they start their business. The seats are really limited, so I wouldn't say this is a good place to have chats with your friends if you want to sit longer, as you'll definitely feel pressured by the queue outside the shop. Anyway, the service was good and attentive. They have their own baked goods, but don’t take them yourself—just order, and they will bring them to you. The only concern I have is that the baked goods are placed at waist level, which is not hygienic. People moving and speaking nearby could potentially contaminate the food with saliva.

Really sensational cakes and a lovely choice of hot and cold beverages.

We had to wait for around 20 minutes to get in and get a table but it was worth the wait. I had the Nutella pancakes and they were really nice and fluffy . Also the service and atmosphere was excellent. Will definitely go again .
