North China Dumpling in Cambridge

A hidden germ in Cambridge. Extremely satisfying and scrumptious experience. Outstanding stewed beef brisket casserole, Chinese cabbage stir fry with vinegar, Singapore fried rice noodle which my family all agree are even better than those in most of Hong Kong restaurants. The crispy pork belly and veg dumpling are nice They also offer a good choice of vegan dishes which are particularly appealing to me as a vegetarian. The ramen chef js not around unfortunately so my son went for shredded pork & preserved veg homemade thin rice noodle but he found yummy as well. They are offering 50% off for today and tomorrow another big surprise and bonus for us! Great staff with excellent service with nice atmosphere. Seating and layout are spacious. Chuhou Beef Brisket and Carrot Bao: Super high quality! ! ! Vinegar braised cabbage, Xingzhou fried rice: unexpected surprise, delicious! ! Pickled mustard pork rice noodles, tofu and leek dumplings, garlic rapeseed: delicious! Lots of vegetarian options! Another unexpected surprise: half price today and tomorrow👍🏻😃🙏

Tasty food, quiet restaurant but the waitress was lovely.

Prices advertised on window were very misleading as the menu prices differed significantly. We had to chase the server for some drinks and to order some food even though it wasn't busy . The food suprisingly came out very quick. However the portions were small for the price . Everything tasted bland and lacked any flavour . We had a 'ho fun' and rice dish which lacked any 'wok hei' but seemed like a 2 minute job in the wok. The 'char sui' pork was dreadful . It had no glaze or crisp to outside , definitely reheated and not fresh . It was drowned in some sort of broth and again it lacked any real flavour, just very bland . We also had the dumplings a try, again nothing special, very bland in flavour again. These are basic yet very popular cantonese dishes which they couldn't even execute well. When the bill arrived it was not itemised but hand written so he could of put anything down and made up the final figure . From the previous reviews I'm guessing they sneakily add service charge in . We just ate the food as quick as possible so we could exit promptly. Never again!

In Cambridge to visit my sister and we stopped by this restaurant for dinner - very tasty and delicious Chinese food especially the dumplings and the lamb and bean curd clay pot which was a particular highlight. Good value and staff were very friendly as well

Average portion dishes. Luke warm service. I don’t think they are used to having many non-chinese diners. They are far more comfortable serving chinese diners. No annoying music playing in background- so excellent location for those who use hearing aids. It is clean and warm. The menu is extensive and includes pictures of virtually every dish.

According to the merchants here, and the menu outside the window of the store says that a bowl of beef ramen is 8.9 pounds, but the menu after entering the store has risen to 12 pounds, which is acceptable. However, two people only ordered two bowls of noodles and the price went up to 35 pounds, because there was a service charge, but the service was only two glasses of water. This price can go to a better hotel to enjoy some better service, do not recommend everyone to come here

Our 1st time here and the general experience wasn’t great! Poor quality food and not good service. When asked for the bill we’re told to pay via bank transfer (we had cash) and they questioned why we didn’t want to pay the 10% optional service. In general not a good effort or experience at all. Sorry but we will not come back neither recommend

The food was great, but after I finished eating they told me that the card machine was broken and I had to pay cash, I didn’t have cash on me at that time so I was held there for around 20 minutes which ruined my plans for the evening, It was kind of my fault for not bringing cash but I think that the restaurant should have give me a heads up when I entered, because who knew whether I had cash or not.I couldn’t go to the ATM because my credit card can only swipe and cash cannot be taken out.The food was good but the experience I had after finishing was not Ideal

The service was too bad, the food was Ok. The guy literally took away my dish saying "it is not yours"... and then charged us that dish. My sister came to visit me with her family, so I didn't want to make a scene but really regret bringing then over there. Don't go unless you are hungry, especially with family. Tgey were extremely rude other than charging the dish that was taken from me while i was still eating it, and I had to ask for a glass three times in English and Chinese. And as a coup de grâce he brought the check without asking and while we were still eating and took the dishes. We were basically thrown out of the restaurant without any reason and overcharged.

Tasty Claypot lamb and genuine service

Avoid this place, Overcharged us on the bill, not itemised and don’t let you see the bill. Check other reviews and you will see same thing has happened to number of people. Don’t recommend due to the dishonestly of the establishment. I would avoid this place or at least make sure you add up the costs and be ready to check the bill! Go elsewhere plenty of other honest reputable places in Cambridge.

The toilet doesn’t have toilet rolls, the food was burnt, the portions were small, the duck was all burnt and not good! They have a mandatory service charge even if you’re not happy with the experience. Don’t recommend at all. Very expensive for what they offer.

Lanzhou Ramen is very close to the taste of Lanzhou Ramen except Lanzhou. Meat, needless to say, is the cost. Noodles, needless to say, are the cost. The soup has that taste.

The portion is very small. A portion of steamed pork ribs with black bean sauce is 15p. I bought a short rib that was full of bones. It is the most deceptive restaurant I have ever eaten in. There is no other restaurant. I highly recommend it.

The dumpling is so disappointed. I guess it was from the package dumpling in the supermarket. The taste is not good! Never back again!

The taste is very average, expensive, and there is a service fee. I originally wanted to eat the noodles/mixed noodles of Lanzhou Ramen, but it turned out that they were not available. I was recommended fried noodles. Well, I’ll eat them when I’m here. It turned out that there seemed to be only a small piece of meat that tasted strange, and no other minced meat. While I was eating, the boss suddenly came over, took away my useless spoon and put it back in the basket. You can definitely wait until I finish eating before taking it~ The fried noodles are 12.1 pounds, and 0.1 is the service charge... I'll try it at Mill Road next time.

Evaluate carefully. It tastes terrible! They say they are northern dumplings, but they are obviously from Guangdong, and the ones served are wontons. The noodles are still lumpy. When I checked out, I deliberately overcharged nearly forty pounds.

Food is totally different from the pic on the menu. Price is set unreasonable to cheat Chinese tourists. And how dare the restaurant set a service fee with totally nonexistent service. No service at all! The staff were also chatting with others while I was waiting for him to bring me the cutlery. Stay away from empty Chinese restaurants like this

I want 14 pounds of honey-glazed barbecued pork fried rice, and the honey-glazed barbecued pork is in bits and pieces.

After a holiday shopping in nearby John&Lewis, I came to this restaurant for a quick meal, I only ordered a tofu soup noodles and a simple tea, with requirement of adding more vegetables in soup noodles, it turned out the vegetable they served was chunky un-chewable vegetable stem instead of leafs, surprisingly the total bill was higher than I expected, the amount didn’t add up to me, however I paid and was only given the credit card receipt instead of itemized receipt. I was confused about how much they charged for the inedible vegetable stem, £2 or £3, so I asked for the itemized receipt, then the owner showed up and said he had been in business for 10 years and never provided itemized receipt, I told him obviously that was illegal, then he lashed out, he assumed I am Chinese but I did not speak Chinese to him, and accused me of losing Chinese politeness, and further argued if I had eaten out of the noodles, I had no reason to complain the food and question the bill, his speaking was extremely disrespectful as well as ethnicity-shaming. The truth is I ate the noodles because I was hungry after shopping spree, not because the food was good, plus I left all the SO CALLED “vegetable” (rubbish) in the bowl uneaten due to its poor quality, which was showed in the full video in my mobile phone, why can’t I complain and check the itemized receipt????? Ridiculoussss! MOVEOVER, I am US/UK permanent resident and multilingual speaker, WHY did I have to speak Chinese to him, btw, himself is a Cantonese speaker, his Mandarin is as poor as his English so that he couldn’t fluently communicate with me in Mandarin Chinese either. He also said he had lawyer, if I felt his business is illegal, I can sue him. I will see if he dare to be in courtroom to explain his illegal business practices. Shame on this disgraceful and distasteful racist. I guess he deserves what he deserves.

It used to be good value so we could put up with the nonexistent service and atmosphere, but now they hiked the price by 20%-30% it makes it ridiculous to justify the price given the service and portion you get. The price on the window is outdated. The new fancy menus they hand out as you sit down have some ridiculous fancy prices. Won’t be returning.

Will give it a zero if possible. Completely unacceptable behaviour with my one-year old child. Other reviews mention the owner’s rude attitude, but he went too far this time by snatching chopsticks from a baby. We immediately got up and left. Not worth it at all.

It was a real cold Cambridge afternoon and we were looking at the many menus in this area of town. We saw that this particular restaurant had some tofu and chive dumplings on their menu, so it was an easy choice. We were greeted by a cheerful girl and we were shown to our seats. We ordered the BBQ duo with rice, the chow mein and dumplings. The BBQ took a while to come, I would like to say the wait was worth it but sadly it wasn't. The portions were very small for the price but the flavour was there. The chow mein was good and tasty. The dumplings are definitely the stars of the show. You can tell they are fresh and hand made. They were delicious! Why 3 stars? The restaurant was really cold and made the food get cold fast. Otherwise this would have been a 4 star review. Note to self: Just order dumplings next time

Authentic taste of Hong Kong。Highly recommend Fries beef Ho Fang 。Won ton soup noodle，Soy source chicken and dumpling are fabulous too。很接近香港的味道，乾炒牛河，雲吞麵，豉油雞都十分不錯。

owner recommended their cantonese roast duck (roasted that morning) to us. my chinese mum (born n raised in china) said it's one of the best ones in her life - super tender and juicy!

Im giving 1* review because its not possible to give zero!!! This restaurant is horrible ill never go back again and staff is unprofessional horrible rude and not friendly at all!!! For a first time in cambridge i was surprised when passing on the street by this restaurant window menus and thought ill give it a try. Worst mistake ever!!! First: the menu prices outside on window are all wrong, only when you enter inside and are already at the table that rude manager says that prices changed and “didnt had time to change prices on menu on windows” Secondly when asking for a highchair to sit my baby at the table, i get asked if i can help carry the chair because the waitress cant do it herself, which is again a first for me!! Never a waiter/waitress at a restaurant asked a costumer help to carry the highchair to the table when highchair is simple and light its not heavy at all!! Then when we thought nothing else could go wrong we were still sitting down at the table and were already arriving dishes and drinks at our table when we didnt even order anything!! I asked whats this, we didnt order anything and only then took it back to the right table and other costumers were watching seeing where their food and drink came from. And restaurant wasnt even busy!!! 4 tables counting with ours, and 2 of them were already finishing their mains!! So again absolutely lack of professionalism and catering experience. Then after ordering my partner ordered duck with rice and arrived bones with rice duck was nowhere to be seen, I tried the pig ears because its a very rare dish to see on any restaurant and tasted strange and spicy and on menu didnt mention nothing of spicy!! Absolutely overpriced and very small portions we wont be back ever again!!! And don’t recommend this to anyone!!! Costumer is always right, and on the end i almost got in a argument with lady manager because our food was awful and we barely ate anything and she still said you ordered it not us so not our fault now pay!!! I never had such horrible costumer service anywhere in uk and ive been on a thousand Chinese restaurants and never paid and left hungry ready to eat somewhere else with better food and costumer service!!!

Most of the menu crossed out, including the majority of dumpling dishes, ironic considering the name Had to ask if we could order a drink after we already ordered the food. Drinks did not come with glasses, just cans and bottles. Rude waiter - definitely didn't feel welcome. Had to ask for plates so we could share the dishes we ordered. Zero atmosphere with no music, just the sound of the waiter dragging his feet and other people eating. Food was standard for the price but with no presentation. Definitely wouldn't recommend it. Oh yeah, one of the dishes never arrived, but still on the bill, got it taken off, but still.

Very generous portion of the seafood Lanzhou noodle, which is a healthy option with flavoursome but not oily soup base and plenty of veg Tofu and Chinese chives dumplings are nice too Speedy yet friendly service

The food met my expectations in terms of quality. The beef brisket consistently proved tender and juicy. I especially relished the combination of noodles and dumplings paired with the homemade chili sauce. The chili sauce at this establishment not only tastes delicious but also boasts a unique flavor profile. For aficionados of spicy condiments, it's undoubtedly a must-try. I'm certainly planning to return for more.

Food was really good, home made noodle beef soup which was very light in flavour. I also had mixed roast chicken and pork with rice which was my favourite dish as it was very tasty. M Will be coming again for sure

The food was fine. We asked for a dish that was not on the menu and were charged £40 for a plate of squid. Apparently, it was our fault for not asking the price. The waitress also did not know the price but they said it was not their fault. They showed us a new menu where a plate of prawns was what they charged us. Making it up as they go along and was a sour taste to our so-so experience.

I went here last year and it was phenomenal, this year was another story. We ordered our food (two noodle soups duck and beef, and some dumplings) and drinks. The food arrived after a while ...we had to remind the staff twice about our drinks (sprite and an iced tea) they finally brought the sprite but it was just a can - no glass. My boyfriend's iced tea finally arrived as we finished our noodle soups but the dumplings were nowhere to be seen. Eventually we finished out noodle soups and the dumplings arrived. Very disappointing but the quality of food can't be faulted.

This place was an absolute nightmare. If u want a lackluster experience this is your place. Got three small pieces of meat and microwaved rice with hard bits. We also asked for water and never received it. DO NOT GO HERE!

Unfortunately, the owner was rude. This is a restaurant we have frequented a number of times with friends and family for freshly made noodles and dumplings. Today we went for a usual early dinner and ordered the usual which were 2 bowls of noodles and 4 dishes of dumplings. For the dumplings, we like to dip them in either soya sauce or vinegar so there are 2 little dishes of sauce each. Just before we started the owner came to our table and rudely said “you are wasting the sauce!”. We explained to him one was soya sauce and the other was the vinegar for dipping. Without a word, he walked off. We had just started eating and it completely ruined the meal. God forbid you want have to have 2 dipping sauces each for your dumplings. Best to bring a bottle of soya sauce and by the way they prefer cash, you get 10% service charge knocked off! The quality of the food has also reduced since they've opened. We won't be returning.

Best dumplings in Cambridge with a great selection of noodles, rice and BBQ. Do yourselves a favour and buy a jar of the chili oil it's a must addition to any meal for me now. Great view of parkers piece and an entrance from the park side or Regent Street side. Treat yo' self! North China Dumpling is top notch and I cannot recommend it enough.

There’s a reason why this restaurant is empty and the business is not going well. The food was alright, pig ears as an appetiser could have more flavour and portion considering the price but was not too bad. Beef soup was amazing and I was really impressed of the taste. Would consider to come back just because of this noodles. However dumplings were just average and bbq trio was seriously disappointing. Pork was fine but chicken and duck was so bony. I understand it’s not boneless however they cut the meat with bone inside which makes the bone shattered and literally the small pieces of bones were everywhere and so hard to eat especially when I almost broke my teeth from eating meat with bone in it. This is horrible and they should change the way they cut it or service it. Service was poor as well. The old guy who looks like owner is very unkind and seems to be stressed most of the time. No music in the restaurant so it’s awkwardly quiet and uncomfortable to dine in. No reason to choose this place over others.

Service is fast. Food is simple. I can definitely recommend you get the lamb dumplings as it was our favourite by far. Having 汤圆, sweet rice dumplings in sweet soup really made it a nice trip. Would come back again for the lamb dumplings and I'd love to try the duck.

Excellent handmade noodles with pork and dumplings. My husband said it reminded him of us living in Beijing. The cold chicken was a bit too much spicy for me (low tolerance) but my father in law loved. Vegetables were very fresh too. BBQ was pretty typical of most Chinese restaurants. The owner is from Hong Kong bit also speaks mandarin. One accessible toilet which appeared cleaner than most typical Chinese restaurants.

Worst service I had in my life: At the entrance I said I'm waiting for my friends to arrive and asked to meanwhile use the toilet. The guy literally showed me the exit door and asked repeatedly for me to leave. After understanding that he's not kidding I told him that he have no right for not giving me service and its probably illegal. He gave up and went away. The other 2 workers seemed also shocked from his behavior.

We arrive early and ordered food, a friend arrived 10 mins later from training and asked to go to the 🚻 🚾 before coming to us but the man in the entrance, who I think is the owner or manager, show her the door and told her to leave. So, despite the food being good and tasty, we will not come back as rudeness is not what you want in a restaurant (or anywhere).

What happened here?!! Was here two weeks ago and it was amazing, tonight is disorganised chaos. The manager appears to be away and orders are being missed customer s are complaining about the delays, the tables are a mess, take aways are a long queue. And the shuffling shoes, just pick up your feet!!!

unexpected quality food. As a Hong Kong Asian, you can get the HK taste and Chinese quality and home taste in here. full house tonight better to book before you come. la mien noodles is different from the supermarket kne. you can feel the quality from China cos the chef learn from there. The beef noodle with soft and fatty beef which is a food to re order. Roasted duck is a must. juicy and tasty. good portion. The garlic vegetable is very good too. not so oily. The dumpings I feel good without the very porky taste. the spicy and sour noodles look plain but the taste is not bad. Good for spicy lover and vegetarian. the Milk tea or lemon tea is the home taste which is not easy to get in UK. Feel very satified dinner with Asian taste in city centre.

I ordered handmade noodles with beef. The beef must be the worst that they could find on the market. It was full of fat and looked more like scraps. The noodles didn’t look like handmade either. To alleviate my grievance, the waitress was friendly and kept a smily face.

Great food and a genuine culinary experience from Northern China. The dumplings were the highlight by far, but the duck as a sharing platter was a really impressive and delicious selection. I recommend ordering more than what you think you would eat and taking time to speak to the staff for options which may not be on the menu. Comfortable, welcoming, and very good food.

I love the food, but the service is truly terrible. Every time that I go there, I say this is the last time, but just because food is delicious and cheap I go there again. They never come and check on you o see how was the food or if you need anything else or not. They usually forget to bring you tap water that you asked for and als sometimes forget your order. And tuch your spoon and chopsticks with not clean hands or drop them when they're bringing it to you😐😐

hand made beef noodles - 7.5/10, beef could be better but the noodles have a nice mix of chewiness and bite and the chilli oil is superb prawn / pork and chinese leaf dumplings - not to my liking

It’s unusual to find such a good service in this type of restaurant serving this type of food. The staff is super friendly and nice, they even provided special kids chopsticks for my son. The food was really good too. Will definitely come back.

It should be a place that makes good dumplings, given the name. However we ate much better dumplings elsewhere. The same goes for the duck. Also pricy.

Very authentic Cantonese food - had a roasted duck, pork and chicken combo with rice and a bubble tea. The rice came in a decent portion. The meat was succulent and the sauce was great and rich in flavour. Will definitely come again.

Excellent food and service. We had the beef brisket noodle soup and pork and prawn dumpling soup. More noodles than I wanted but the beef was tasty and tender in a delicious broth.

Terrible main. The soya chicken was horrendous to look at. When explaining the state of the chicken. The server said it is authentic Chinese food. The special arrived in one minute. With the pork being cooked so much that it felt like rubber. Honestly disgusting food. I love dumplings and this place has single handedly put me of dumplings. Paid £30 to eat poor attempt at food. I should have gone nandos!!!

Best Lanzhou noodle I have ever had in the U.K. the beef broth is absolutely another level. Great service too. The short-hair lady was very friendly, welcoming and considerate. As a Chinese expat in the U.K., I am very pleased to see a restaurant like this. You well demonstrated the very best hospitality and courtesy from our Chinese people. All the best!

Excellent dumplings (tried prawn and tofu/chives), very hospitable service. This is the family run place I used to visit ages ago. Was very happy to revisit, and reflex on old times. Ignore bad reviews, it had and has the best dumplings in Cambridge.

We walked in this small Chinese restaurant, to enjoy the freshly made dumplings and noodles. The food was excellent and the staff was more than accommodating. Overall we had a wonderful time and look forward to go back. Ask for the table in the back with beautiful park views :)

Haven’t eaten here but got takeaway and was very happy. The staff were friendly and the prices seemed pretty reasonable. Very decent sized portions if you order rice with bbq roast meats. I’ll be back try some other dishes.

Terrible food and service! Even the frozen dumplings you got from Chinese supermarket are better than here. Taste of appetiser duck is bland and the portion is little. It is a waste of good location and have not idea why it survived till now.

It’s a lovely little family run restaurant, clean and spacious! The staff is friendly and welcoming! We ordered the handmade beef noodles soup with some dumplings 🥟 and also takeaways the mixed roast meat platter! The food is freshly prepared and cooked well; noodles is nice texture and the broth is delicious! The dumplings is authentically tasty and the roast meat is marinate the Cantonese style. Would recommend and visit again 👍🏻

Had our birthday dinner there. Very impressed by great hospitality of the staff and best roasted duck I ever had in the UK so far. Gave us extra soup refill and on the house fried rice which we were not expecting. Highly recommended.
