No.1 Duke Street in Richmond upon Thames

From my first visit to the No 1a Duke Street, though I have yet to savor the menu fully, I am compelled to commend the exceptional service and welcoming ambiance. The staff, led by the delightful Olta, extend a warm, genuine welcome that sets a high standard for customer service. Olta graciously showed me several comfortable seating areas within the restaurant, each offering a unique and cozy atmosphere, perfect for settling down with a laptop. The presence of a fireplace adds a touch of homely charm that enhances the overall experience on this spring day. What’s particularly impressive about No 1a Duke Street is their attention to inclusivity and variety in their menu options. For those with specific dietary preferences or requirements, they offer an array of vegetarian and plant-based dishes, and they cater to gluten-free needs with alternatives like gluten-free buns and sourdough bread. The Burger + Pint special on Tuesdays sounds like a tempting offer, providing a house burger with fries and a choice of a pint, glass of house wine, or soft drink at a value that's hard to overlook at £17.5. For those who are gluten-sensitive or intolerant or Celiac: the burger meat contains wheat as a binder! The staff's proactive approach in ensuring that every guest feels noticed and valued—even though they were unaware that I had already been assisted by Olta—speaks volumes about their dedication to customer satisfaction. While my full dining experience at No 1a Duke Street awaits a future visit, the initial impressions suggest that this restaurant is not just about food, but about creating a memorable experience for all who step through their doors. If the quality of the food matches the quality of service and the charm of the setting, I’ll become a regular when I’m in the Richmond area.

Tasty food, friendly staff, not the best acoustics for those with hearing aids.

Disappointing experience. Service really poor. Small portions and very expensive. Main course mussells £19.95 and a starter-size portion by general standards. My friend ordered a Sunday roast and asked to make a very easy change to it, explained what she wanted very clearly. Was then charged extra when the bill came. Wouldn’t come back here to eat.

It winds me up when places charge you £15.50 for a burger and don’t include chips. You have to pay an extra £4.75 for chips and optional £2 for bacon. It winds me up even more when you pay said prices and the food is bare average. I’m not trying to be mean here but I honestly could and have made a better burger at home. It was utterly tasteless. No sauce, no seasoning, the bun was dead dry. The patty was over cooked and tasteless. The £4.75 chips had no seasoning. I would have had a better meal at five guys across the road. And also they use cheap ketchup. Just a rip off. Do the chefs and owners not try their own product? There is no way the chefs and owner can taste that food and honestly say that the food is good. Its not hard either! Just throw some Cajun spice on the chips, S&P on the burger, butter the bun, use a fresh bun, change the patty meat something richer. It’s a shame because the venue is lovely and the staff are good. I’ve also been before and had the Pappardelle pasta which was also disappointing. So unfortunately I won’t be going back and I recommend people find elsewhere. I write this because a) this was the second trip there and b) I’m tired of restaurants like this robbing people blind with below average food.

Really enjoyed our lunch today! First visit here and won't be our last. Food was really good; especially the Steak Sandwich. My partner had the chicken burger and said it was pretty good. Service was good and was just a great experience overall. Special thanks to one of the managers, Michael who looked after our table!

No 1 Duke Street is an interesting place in a nice location in Richmond. There is a small outside area for sitting if the weather is fine. The inside has 3 separate areas - a bright, contemporary area, a smaller area with large comfy chairs with a real fireplace and a larger area with it's own bar. Table service for drinks is available - we made ourselves comfortable in the comfy chairs and were soon served. 😀 Can't comment on the food as we were stopping off for an aperitif before going to dine elsewhere. Enjoyable visit.

Lovely brunch spot in Richmond. Made my sisters birthday special and then visited again on Mothers Day. The mushroom truffle pasta was delicious.

Great site, ruined by horrible waitress and really poor food. The menu sounds great but the meals we had lacked any discernible taste other than mediocre yuck..And not cheap.. do yourself a favour, don’t be seduced by the cool interior.. walk on!

Incredibly rude management staff at this restaurant - it’s a shame as have to been to others ones of this chain and had very good experience. Staff were incredibly impolite when asking for minor menu swaps, which is standard practice everywhere else and were put at the back of an almost empty restaurant. Visit the Wimbledon branch instead, much better service (and with a smile)!

Visited with my colleagues for a team outing. Food was great. Tried their apple pie old fashioned which was amazing🌟. The team were great and very attentive. The vibe was nice and relaxing and we all had a very nice time.

No 1a Duke Street, an unusual 'pub' lovely. Very busy so not many photos. Clearly a well known place to hang out and chat with friends and family. More geared towards table service, although there are a couple of bars here serving a selection of keg beers. I failed to spot any cask offerings (that may be my failure). A very cheerful pleasant place to visit and while away some time. Have to catch the place early for it not to be crowded, I suspect. A note, entrance is via the courtyard garden, easy to miss.

Fantastic location! I'll definitely be returning. I'm surprised I haven't visited before. The atmosphere was lively and bustling, especially for a Friday night. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent! I mainly ordered small appetizers; fries with Cumberland sausages, which were tasty. However, I wasn't particularly fond of the gravy that accompanied the sausages.

I've been before and had a lovely time therefore I won't give a super low review however, my past visit left much to be desired. I ordered the mushroom pasta which was bland, watery and quite frankly not worth the money. Luckily we had a lovely staff member who happily swapped the dish. Unfortunately, we ordered the mussels which also lacked in seasoning but we're also overcooked and full of grit/sand. I've eaten here in the past and had a great time so maybe something has changed in the kitchen. Will definitely give it some time before returning again.. if I return...

Very expensive with small portions. Had a hallumi Burger each with fries to share. Burger alone cost £15. Stingy on the fries. Left still feeling hungry and I am not a particularly big eater.

Great spot for evening dinner. Waiters kept drinks flowing, DJ was churning out some banging tunes and the chefs were cheffing. Really enjoyed the atmosphere - high energy dining. Will be visiting again

Pretty standard brunch menu and a little on the pricey side but portion sizes are generous. The restaurant itself is stunning and the coffee was good too. Booked the private area for an engagement party and had a great experience! The staff were all super helpful and attentive, the guests loved the food and it was overall a really lovely venue. Would highly recommend.

Avoid if you would like to be served. This lovely place is let down by the awful service. Waiting 15 minutes after sitting down to be asked for a drink, and only getting attention by constantly attempting to get staff attention, is not what you would expect. When taking the service charge off, because of the complete lack of any service, the waitress asked why, we explained very politely that the service was slow, and she snatched the receipt from my hand, didn’t apologise and handed the responsibility of payment over to another member of staff. Appalling behaviour. The £28 roast was seriously disappointing. I’ve attached a picture of what it gets you. Honestly, Richmond has so many other places to go for a Sunday, go elsewhere. We made a mistake today. Being a Richmond resident for a while, this place really does let itself down, compared to other restaurants in the area.

Long time Richmond resident but first time to No 1a. Great vibe, really nice interior, outside space and overall design aesthetic. Welcoming, friendly and accommodating staff, but actual service pretty slow. Watched one round of our drinks getting warm on the bar for about 15mins. Had a couple of nibbles with our drinks - the crispy squid was really delicious, BUT - and I know you can't compare a fast food chain with a hospitality venue - I do think that £4.75 (+ 12.5% service) for a portion of fries about half the size of a McDonald's serving is taking the piss. Shame.

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!! I used to like this place and the food but it has all gone extremely downhill!! The food was inedible (dry chicken, no sauce, cold chips). The service was absolutely shocking!!. I have never met such a rude waitress who slammed items down on the table, told us there was no vinegar (when we got it from another waiter). She pushed passed people aggressively and told us 'whatever' when we complained to her. Nobody cold believe it! We found it hard to get service and drinks at the table as they were so short staffed. Another waiter absolutely reeked of BO it was making us gag! He then added more cocktails that we didn't have to our bill. VVV expensive for a meal we hated and nasty rude staff. NEVER AGAIN UNLESS IT CHANGES MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!

Music was pumping at 8pm couldn't hear a word my guest where saying and when I request to either to be moved or if they could ask the DJ to lower the music I was told this is how it is. While the kitchen is open and guest are eating the music levels should be at a level that is in the background not drowning out the guest conversation. We had a manager that came over with some mini Guinness shots which really didn't help me hear my guest and just ended up shouting at eachother like being at a festival. DJ really needs to learn the art of building an atmosphere not raving it up at 8pm.

We popped in No 1a duke st today while out for a walk. It was busy but the friendly staff found us a space. The staff were friendly and attentive all the time and the food was amazing. Definitely going again 10/10 from me. Tim from Mitcham Surrey

First time I’d actually visited this place in all the years going out in Richmond - pleasantly surprised!

Came here recently with some work colleagues, there was around 20 of us. We were in the top event room with the dedicated bar. It was a fantastic evening, the staff were brilliant, and the food too. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much for them. The food all came out together, and all really nicely presented and tasty too. I went for the aubergine and flat bread to start. It was absolutely delicious. So full of flavour. I could have just eaten that all night long and been the happiest ever! For main I went for the steak. It was very tasty although very chewy, which wasn't too pleasant. Bit of a shame, but the flavours did make up for it. The fries that came with the steak were delicious. Nice amd crispy with a good fluffy inside. I've also added a photo of one of my colleagues' fish pie, which I was told was delicious. For desert, I had the lemon tart. It was nice, although very rich and I couldn't finish it all. Overall, I highly recommend coming here as it really was such a lovely evening enjoyed by all.

The best party ever. The organisation was seamless; everything was perfect and fell into place precisely as I requested. The dedicated barman was attentive, bringing out the drinks as needed and informing me of the stock situation so that I could assess the needs. It never felt like I was being pressured to order more and only being updated as requested so that I could make informed decisions. The food was incredible; all 31 guests still dream of the mac and cheese bowls. Tonya, the planner, was responsive to all my needs and questions and was never pushy. The venue is beautiful, the private room is stunning, and there is no need for additional decorations. It was set up to a standard beyond my expectations. I cannot believe how smoothly the whole process and evening went; I cannot find a single fault. Thank you for making my 40th so perfect and fun!

Amazed by the beautiful decor, it’s like entering Narnia. Loverly cafe area and courtyard at the front and then a grand room and bar. I came here for a late lunch on Sunday and got seated in no time. The Shakshuka was amazing. There are options for allergies as well. I’ll definitely be back soon!

Service is slow. It took me over 5 min just to get a menu, even though I asked one server if I could sit and tried to get the attention of another who went to both tables next to me. I had a soda on my table to entirety of my time here, but only after I ordered did they tell me I couldn’t drink it. If they’d told me before, but I’d already ordered the most overprice eggs Benedict I’ve ever had

Low review is for the food. Portions were small for the price, and the vegan options were terrible. Vegan burger had an insane amount of soy sauce in it which ruined the taste, and the vegan roast was so small it was basically a snack. Otherwise, the service was great and the place is beautiful, and we weren't rushed at all, which I appreciated.

No 1a is part of a collection called Wearetheaddress, and the restaurant’s location fits well with the collection’s vibe. We were served tap water and asked if we wanted any drinks as soon as we sat down at our table. Since it wasn’t very busy, we received our food within 15 minutes of ordering it. The halloumi burger was delicious, but it was similar to halloumi burgers you can find elsewhere. There was nothing particularly special about it. Overall, having lunch at No 1a was great. You get good value for your money, the location is central, and the staff were professional. However, I was a bit disappointed when we ordered smoothies because it wasn’t made clear that they would come in a bottle. I thought they would be made fresh and served in a glass. It might have been a misunderstanding or I might have missed some details. The smoothie was great, but it didn’t justify the cost and the small quantity we received in a bottle.

2/5 as the portions are very small. I ordered a shrimp burger for £17 and not even a side of lettuce. Really?

Fantastic. Absolutely lovely welcome and superb service from all staff. Manager/main guy running the floor was extremely polite and attentive. Food was so good. I got the fregola salad with feta, which was incredible. All the right flavours. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

I enjoy coming here regularly. Every time the food is delicious and the drinks are good. The staff are always super lovely and helpful. The atmosphere of the venue is also really nice.

This bar used to be great, but when I visited with a group of about 20 we were made to feel like naughty schoolkids just because a few of the group were standing up. They expect you to know exact numbers who will show up or they get angsty with customers, which is unrealistic for a works drinks. The prices are also pretty expensive even by Richmond standards The space at the front of house is really nice, but the back area has no natural light so feels dingey

Please make sure you check the price of the wine in this restaurant. I had a glass of the Whispering Angel Rosé for just under £15 a glass! You can buy a bottle for between £10 and £20. Total rip off

The cocktails are superb! I just watched a man called Azzy (forgive me if spelled incorrectly) create some seriously special drinks. Dude knows what he’s doing. I asked for a base of tequila and no grapefruit, he’s made two different and delicious drinks. Totally unexpected. Definitely coming back with more friends.

Greeted by an awful woman who on sight of me arriving as a mother with a pram was instantly extremely rude and patronising. I didn’t ask her name but she seemed to be manager level. Her tone was very aggressive and she complained to me of previous mother and baby groups with their prams and the space they require. This was all before she even checked our booking. It turns out my friend had then unfortunately booked for the day after, but she gaslit me into thinking I’d come a day early and was in the wrong. I politely said I felt her tone had been a bit rude when it wasn’t me who had made the booking and she became even worse and saccharinely patronising. Such a shame as the establishment was almost empty with plenty of space as always. Met my mum friends outside and went elsewhere where even without booking ahead, we were greeted with politeness and compassion and given an entire area to ourself. Just sadly so unnecessary but wanted to make other mums aware that this woman was very anti-mother so think twice before booking. A mother with a pram is going through a lot and even if you have no space for her, she deserves kindness. I’ve never left a negative review on here before, but I’ve never been treated so badly.

Delicious food and excellent wines. Friendly attentive team. Bit noisy for the older folk (like me), but overall a wonderful experience.

No.1a Duke Street is a delightful spot! The ambiance is cozy and inviting with a great taste in design. The service was quick, and our orders arrived promptly. The Bloody Mary's were excellent. However, the salads were delicious but quite small for £19 each. I recommend they reconsider their portion sizes for better value. Overall, a lovely experience!

Staff were great, food and drinks were nice but as soon as the dj came in I couldnt hear a single word others were saying. Like others have saud the acoustics in here are terrible

The food was a letdown. The staff managed the problems well but I wouldn’t head here to eat. The location is good so maybe it’s better for drinks. I won’t be testing the theory though. Hate giving bad reviews. This place has the potential to be great.

Staff were fantastic - we had a birthday in the group and Ivan took such good care of us. Did bottomless drinks and it was a well done, we felt very well looked after! Zucchini Fritters were quite dry/chewy - never had like that before and a bit hard to eat, but other folks really liked their mains

Ivan took excellent care of a large group of gals for my friend’s birthday - we felt SO well looked after. Zucchini fritters were a bit dry but all else was fantastic (and one of the better bottomless brunches I’ve had).

Had the burger which was very disappointing. Patty was about the same size as a McD and overcooked. Suspect it had been cooked earlier in the day judging by the texture and how it cut. Order was also wrong and at no point did the 3 waiters that served us ask if the meal was ok.

Have visited twice in Winter then in Summer. Dined inside in Winter outside this Summer. Booked again has enjoyed so much & wanted to eat outside. Food & wine recommended & staff really helpful. Would be helpful to be able to book outside tables on-line and not advisable to dine with others in music area, as you wouldn't be able to hear each other but definitely will be booking again.

It was honestly so lovely from start to finish the service was amazing. I can’t remember his name but he said he was a supervisor and he was so helpful and attentive to everything we needed. All the staff were so friendly and helpful I couldn’t asked for anything better, not forgetting the food was delicious! Thank you so much for everything will defiantly be recommending you.

On Sunday I took my Father out for a Sunday roast for Fathers Day, the staff were wonderful and the service was amazing. The food was very quick and extremely Yummy, the bar inside was very big and good vibes I will definitely be coming back again :)

I had a vegetarian burger which was quite good. I wish it'd come with fries and I wouldn't have to pay an extra £4.5 for them. A lovely place in Richmond.

Popped into No1 for a pre-theatre bite to eat, can't say we'll be rushing back. The staff were polite but distant, the food showed a distinct lack of effort. The house burger came on a stale brioche bun and was stuffed with enough uncut lettuce leaves to keep Jonathan Rabbit happy for days, this made it impossible to pick up and eat. The club sandwich was equally uninspiring. The bill? Well we were in the middle of Richmond so you know your paying a bit of a premium, I think it came to around £85.00 for burger, club sandwich, pint and a half of neck oil and 2 x glasses of prosecco. Overall just a bit flat. Chips were good!

So the reason for this low review was the service. The food was adequate and I’ll leave it at that but the service…left a lot to be desired. The 5 of us were sat down and were without menus for 10 minutes. I had to ask for them. We then waited 25 more minutes until our order was taken. I had to ask them to come over twice. When the server took our order, he didn’t have any paper or tablet to take it down on. Both my wife and I said ‘perhaps you’d like to write this down as we’re ordering drinks and food for 5 people’. The fellow needed to realise that it’s irrelevant if he has a photographic memory or not (he clearly didn’t) it’s showing respect to the order of the customer. 15 minutes after that, I asked where our drinks were and the server said there weren’t any drink on our tab (so much for the server’s memory). We’d also asked for water for the table on 2 occasions and were only given on the 3rd. It’s a shame as the location is great and the servers were actually polite when you interacted with them. But better training is needed.

I'm very disappointed with No 1 Duke Street Bar. Despite its fantastic location, great atmosphere, and good service from friendly staff, it falls short on value for money. The prices are high, and the food portions are disappointingly small. Moreover, the practice of moving garbage bags through the customers an hour before closing negatively impacts the overall experience. Regrettably, this will be my last visit.

Used to be quite a good afternoon/evening out but lost their touch. Doesn’t feel friendly and atmosphere ruined by a maitre de who is unnervingly insane with her unique hosting abilities to ruin the vibe right when you had just started to enjoy yourself again. Don’t bother coming there’s so many other wonderful places in Richmond which are more enjoyable.

Lovely visit sat outside.,Had a coffees starters. It became busy so after a while ventured inside to pay., immediately a staff member went to look up the bill, then I was asked to pay contactless. Seemed a lot more expensive than anticipated and noticed after the optional service charge had been added when there were only two of us without asking. Why say it is optional?

I have come here a few times now and never leave fully satisfied with my experience. We came here for my birthday meal - we stood about for ages waiting to speak to someone to be seated (we had pre booked). The vegan options are disappointing - every does a burger or a salad. It would be great to have something else as an option. The drinks were incredible - they came delicious and quickly. As we were placed on a big conference sized table - it was very hard to hear people sat across when the music got loud. I would come again but maybe in to try the roast or the brunch, but if that doesn’t do it I probably wouldn’t come again.

My experience here was very nice. The food was amazing and i remember beinh impressed. Even though this is now almost half a year ago. I would recommend this place for a lunch mid day.

We had a gift of a Sunday Roast Experience, it was unclear as to what you got on both the voucher and the website. It wasn't an experience at all, it was basically credit towards your bill. The service was poor; multiple people looking after you which meant confusion of when things were done, and over-attention with checks you are ok (one managing to ignore the mention that it wasn't ok!). When we had finished eating the table was fully cleared and no dessert menu was offered, we ended up asking for it after about 10min. A roast for £24 I would have expected more, the beef tasted similar to how partially cooked mince tastes, and the gravy was thin and tasteless. The pork was tasty though (but still thin gravy). The veg was ok, best bit of that was the spuds. Expensive roast, not worth it. Coffee was tasty
