Eaten here several times over the years.Never been disappointed.Quality British food, cooked to perfection.A strong contender for the best restaurant in Didsbury. You want A romantic dinner, special occasion or if you just want to treat yourself, this is the place to go. Excellent unobtrusive service and a nice ambience. highly recommended Edit: recently revisited and although the service and ambience were the same, we thought there was a slight dip in the quality of the food. Hopefully this was a temporary glitch and on our next visit, it will be back to the same high standards.

My husband and I went for a dinner to No4. Unfortunately, on this occasion, my food was rather average. For a starter, I ordered Rockfort cheese with beetroot and pear. When it arrived, pieces of bland beetroot and pear were accompanied by a few small crumbs of Rockfort cheese. For the main, I had a seabass. The whole dish was unseasoned and rather flavourless. My husband choices were much better. He had soufflé for a starter and a steak for a main, which he enjoyed. Perhaps I was just unluckily.

Another nice relaxed, midweek dinner at No. 4. We had planned to be a foursome but the other couple were unwell – we messaged Nina the day before to apologise and say we’d just be a couple. No problem was the reply. It’s rare that I’d rave over a salad but this one was really well conceived. There’s earthy beetroot, soft sweet pears poached in red wine, sharp tangy Roquefort, a crunch from walnuts, a scattering of peppery rocket and a sweet/sour dressing. Across the table, there’s a twice baked cheese soufflé – very flavoursome from a really mature cheddar. The soufflé was followed by a fillet of stone bass, perfectly cooked and accompanied by a potato rosti and some spinach. And a very summery dressing of olive, tomato basil and capers. Pork ribeye steak is a new dish for the restaurant. And I don’t think I’ve eaten it before, as such – although I have eaten something similar in Spain. It’s cut from around the neck/shoulder and is well marbled like a beef ribeye and packed with juicy flavour. It’s served sliced over a mound of mash. Also on the plate, some broccoli, a slice of black pudding, caramelised apple and an apple brandy sauce. It all works and both plates are generous servings – you are going to go home well fed. . Rice pudding is always on the dessert menu and with good reason. It’s a lovely comforting version in its own right and always comes topped with something fruity, currently rhubarb “jam”. The cheese plate is also a good bet. Choose three from the six on offer (or have all six). My partner picked Red Storm (a Welsh Red Leicester), Yorkshire Blue and Cornish Yarg. They come, perfectly at room temperature, with crackers, celery, apple and grapes.

Food was brilliant. Some stuff came very plain, because it went well with the flavours of the rest of your dish. Nothing is thrown together, everything on the dish compliments each other. It’s like sitting in a living room. Very quaint and lovely place. The sea bass was divine

There’s nothing new to mention about No. 4. Still the same nice food from a seasonally changing menu. Still the same nice service. Mushrooms on toast did exactly what it said on the tin. Crisp, tasty sourdough topped with mixed mushrooms in a little sauce given a hint of rich sweetness from Madeira. Parmesan acts as a seasoning. It’s a generous portion – if there was a handful of salad alongside you’d have a light main course. Seared scallops, perfectly cooked, went down a well-trodden modern classic route – accompanied by a pea puree and black pudding. But, here’s the twist from the kitchen. Paul uses a vegetarian black pudding – possibly the local one made by a company round the M60 in Bury, which is excellent. The flavour is no different from a standard black pud but, of course, can be eaten by folk who want to avoid meat. There’s shreds of apple and a mustard dressing – variations on classic accompaniments to a black pud. A really well conceived and executed starter For one main course, there were slices of lamb rump cooked bang-on at “pink”. And to stop it being just a midweek Sunday roast, the spuds are dauphinoise and the veg are a pea puree and broccoli. There’s a jus of course. There could, so easily, have been mint sauce, but the whole plate is lifted by the use of a mint salsa verde. All in all, a really nice plate of food. Cod fillet was excellent (although no crispy skin). It came with new potatoes, samphire and asparagus so pretty much spring on a plate. Unfortunately it was let down a bit by the lemon butter sauce. There was a sweet/sharp like you’d get in a lemon curd and the sweet side of things just didn’t work. Rice pudding is pretty much always on the dessert menu. It changes through the year – sometimes cold, sometimes hot. There’s always something seasonally fruity – the “boozy plums” being lovely – and for this meal, there’s a rhubarb jam. For me, there’s cheese. Properly served cheese, mind – none of this fridge cold nonsense you get in so many places. Six on offer – go for all six or, as I did, just three. That’d be the Shorrocks Lancashire bomb (probably the finest flavoured Lancashire), Red Storm (a Red Leicester style made in North Wales) and, from just down the road from me, Burt’s Blue made in Holmes Chapel. They come with crackers, celery, apple and grapes. Espresso and chocolate truffles to finish. Nice evening from start to finish.

Weird. The food is really good, we had a roast and that was fantastic. BUT. Most of the waiting staff are school-aged girls and don't really know how to behave and so it's a bit uncomfortable if you have to sit anywhere near the bar (ie near them) or when you have to interact with them. I don't want to pay for a nice meal out to be made to feel awkward and uncomfortable. On top of that you just can't get away from the fact of the restaurant basically being someone's front room, the decor needs an overhaul to get away from this. I think that adds to the awkward feel, because it's like you've intruded into someones house. I liked the food here but I don't think I'll go back because the whole experience was just a bit weird.

If ever you wanted to describe a restaurant as a local gem, then No. 4 would be it. I think that, of the various restaurants we keep coming back to, I’d miss No. 4 most if it wasn’t there. There’s history here as well. Warburton Street still has its original cobbled surface. Even the grid covers have history – they are stamped as belonging to the “Withington Board “ (of Health), which existed between 1876 and 1894, after which the first local council was elected. And, back in 1911, when a census was taken, No. 4 itself was occupied by William Richardson, a platelayer who worked maintaining the railway tracks that ran from the local station into Manchester ( along the tracks that the tram does now, which is how we generally arrive). Of course, the street is no longer home to working class families but a selection of independent businesses. Inside No. 4, things have obviously changed since Richardson’s time. But, thankfully, some things haven’t changed since we started coming here in 2012. Things like the warm welcome. Like the service that’s always on the ball, with things happening just as they should. Like the shortish seasonally changing menu that’s always packed full of choice. It’s down to Paul’s skill in the kitchen and Nina’s skill out front. So, to start for one of us, seared scallops. The cooking bang on here for “just cooked”. They come with a very seasonal pea puree and a mint vinaigrette. I’d best describe the other plate as a warm salad or, maybe, a bit of a fry-up. Chorizo, halved new potatoes, green beans, olives, the crunch from Little Gem and crisp onion rings. It’s dressed with a vinaigrette spiked with Dijon, capers and the oil that’s leaked out of the chorizo. Whatever you might call it, it’s really tasty. For mains, there’s a generous serving of braised lamb shoulder. Almost classic accompaniments of a well made slab of dauphinoise potato, green beans and more of the pea puree. Mint is also a classic with lamb and, here, it appears in a salsa verde. On the other plate a fillet of stone bass, just flaking apart. It sits on potato rosti, which had lost its crispness by having spinach plated on top of it. But there’s crispness from samphire and a potted shrimp butter sauce. It all works very well. And, yes, we had room for dessert. Paul’s take on a Bakewell tart. Puff pastry, filled with an almond custard, studded with sweet/sharp raspberries. A spoonful of raspberry coulis also on the plate and a dollop of thick cream. What’s not to like? A selection of cheese comes perfectly pared with crackers, apple, celery and grapes. Pick three from the choice of six (or pick all six). Thanks. That’ll be the Shorrocks Tasty Lancashire (possibly the finest Lancashire you’ll come across), Red Storm – a really flavoursome Red Leicester type made in North Wales and matured for getting on for two years, and Cornish Yarg, the cheese getting a very mild garlic flavour from being wrapped in wild garlic leaves. We finished with good espresso and truffles.

Fantastic restaurant for coeliacs and non coeliacs. Nearly everything can be made GF and the staff are very aware of cross contamination. A lovely independent restaurant run by people who are passionate about food and take pride in everything they do

Visited for first time and the food and service was amazing. I couldn't fault the quality of the food and how lovely the restaurant is, quiet and small but friendly. Worth it for a different experience to the big chains of restaurants. I would definitely go back again. Its a great place for a special celebration or if you enjoy quality food.

Really really excellent food and service. The menu is relatively small, yet it was still tricky to order as all the dishes sounded delicious. The lamb was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth... and the baked cheesecake was beautiful.

Food was amazing, more delicious vegetarian options than any other steakhouse restaurant I've been to. Attentive and polite staff, our waiter was brilliant; patient and accommodating which is what I always hope for. It is slightly pricey, not insane by any means thiugh and well worth the little bit extra for quality and service that is rare these days.

I recently had my 30th birthday at the Ducie Arms and couldn’t have been happier with the venue, experience, and service. Kevin and Yvonne are friendly and accomodating, and all my friends commented on how nice their service was. The pub has a great open beer garden out the front which we all enjoyed in the sunshine, and inside the pub is a cozy atmosphere with lovely furnishings. Great value for a pint too! All in all it was a perfect venue to book for around 30 people, and I look forward to booking events there in the future.

As is always the case with fine dining experiences, this is my incredibly subjective review as I appreciate everyone's tastes are different. Overall, Mana was an enjoyable experience and the staff seemed to work hard and care to make it such. Positives The courses got better and better as they went on, building to the cured and smoked hogget which was easily one of the best dishes I've had ... possibly ever. The restaurant is set up around the front kitchen, so everyone is almost witnessing the theatre which makes for a great experience. The tall sous chef / chef-de-partie who seemed to be in charge of the kitchen at the front was entertaining to watch although he did sneeze all over the food and the ingredients a couple of times 😂 The dishes were all precisely executed and seemed to be well thought through avoiding the temptation to be style over substance with every piece playing a part in the overall flavour. They also managed to salvage an intolerance situation despite the booking platform failing to send it through in advance and were quite graceful about it despite the inconvenience. Negatives Nothing substantial and all minor points that could be quick fixes - There was a lot of dog hair on the back of the green sofa which I wouldn't expect in a fine dining restaurant. - The very first amuse-bouche that came out was messy (topped with flaky cheese) and ice-cold on the inside to a point where it was partially frozen and uncomfortable to eat. - We saw the chef on the BBQ/meat station test a reduction/sauce with a spoon and use that same spoon to keep stirring. I appreciate this probably happens all the time in restaurants, but you never want to see it. - All of the waiters were pleasant and nice people, but the short-haired lady who occasionally served us spoke very quietly and rushed through the dishes making it difficult to understand what she was explaining. With something so detailed, you really want to know what you're getting. Overall, it's a good experience worth having and the food was exceptional.

Came for a birthday in a large group and definitely recommend it. Food and drinks really good, great vibe (nicely tucked away from the chaos of the streets) and brilliant service. Couldn't help us enough from the first moment we arrived - thanks so much Sam and Skye!
