Standards seemed to have plummeted recently, understaffed, bar prices sky high, freezing rooms and shower runs either boiling hot or cold. Shame as stayed here many many times and standards were high then with nothing a bother.

Nice building but I think it might be understaffed. Arrived from the carpark to a semi full bar area but nobody behind the bar and no clear sign to say where check in was. Realised it was at the bar. Finally a young and very nice staff member came along and seems he was the only one working the whole time we were there. Room was nice but cobwebs and very loud. Can hear normal level conversation through the thin wall and being right above the bar could hear bar noise until it closed. Could hear a dog in another room as well as the owner yelling at it. Finally got a few hours sleep before working the next day. Shower went from cold to boiling hot with no inbetween. Breakfast at half 8 is also quite late especially if people are using the hotel for business travel. Would maybe stay again if on holiday but not for business travel.

Nice young staff but the manager was no where in sight. Waited over 30 minutes for breakfast after being asked to order the night before. Limited choices. Not handy when you have a long walk ahead of you and breakfast isn't until late anyway... Also several problems in the bedrooms of our small group, including radiators and bathroom taps not working...

Bartender nice and drinks ok. Went in for afternoon meal as our first place did not serve food that day. Ordered Balmoral Chicken and a burger. Chicken was dry to the point it was hard to cut, tasteless. Huggies mash had watery consistency and tasted funny...Burger was overcooked, tasted like dry Weetabix, not sure was it spiced at all. Waitress asked other customers is everything ok with their food however never approached us-do not think it a coincidence. Very overpriced.

Absolutely awful food. It was like something that was cooked in advance and then frozen until we ordered. Dried out sausages and mash. Dried out Balmoral Chicken. The veg was hard and tasted of freezer burn... so did the mash. Worst food ever and it cost over fifty quid. Rip-off Wooler. The restaurant had no other diners besides a group who ordered two portions of fries. It wasn't busy, yet it took over half an hour and we had to get the waitress to go to the kitchen to ask after our food. This is the first time I ha e ever had to leave a review like this about any restaurant. Absolutely awful. So bad I left half my wine behind...

Do yourself a huge favour and do not eat here! Absolutely shocking! Booked in for a family birthday meal for 7.30pm on a Bank Holiday Saturday. The manager was in the process of asking other customers to leave because they had the audacity to complain! After taking our drinks orderTHREE times we eventually got our first drink at 8pm. Wisely we decided not to oder starters just mains and go back to our rental for birthday cake for dessert. Our mains appeared at 9pm!!! The order wasn't entirely correct but we knew not to send it back. The food ranged from okay to appalling. A second round of drinks eventually came three 3 G&Ts were sent back due to lack of Gin!! The bill, when it came, was wrong. The service was dreadful and the whole experience ruined a special birthday - thanks for nothing No.1. Would not recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Absolutely shocking from start to finish! By far the worst service ever, I thought we were in an episode of Faulty Towers it was that bad! There were 6 of us and we were celebrating my sister’s 60th birthday. Table was booked for 7:30pm, they took our drinks orders 3 times because they kept forgetting it, we got our drinks just after 8pm, our food arrived at 9pm. The food was a definite 1 out of 10, I was expecting lovely homemade fish cakes and I got 3 small pre-frozen deep fried cheap tasting fish cakes, disgusting 🤮 The highlight of the evening was getting 3 gin and tonics with no gin a flat warm tonic! The bill was also wrong. We didn’t receive an apology they just kept saying they were busy. We have never experienced anything as bad as this and it completely ruined my sister’s special night. Fuming 😡

Popping through Wooler we so the pub/ hotel open so we thought the 6 of us would stop for a drink and a spot of lunch. My husband can not refuse fish and chips when he sees them on a menu. So 2 of them ordered fish and chips and 3 ordered soup of the day which was vegetable. And 1 did not want any thing. The fish and chips came and so burnt and only ate the fish out of the middle which still had loads of bones in it and the soup well I have never had soup with fried parsnips, roast potatoes and fried mushroom and it had that much fat on the top and it wasn't blitz properly that's how we knew what was in the soup with mint and loads of pepper. We were offered a free pudding or speak to the manager. We just wanted to leave. It's not the staffs fault they were lovely just get rid of the cheif. It will be cheaper in the long run.

I have food allergies to gluten, onion and garlic. So eating out for me is a nightmare. But the chef, Diane, at No 1 is so amenable and helpful it is a pleasure eating there. I have eaten there several times and now when I book in advance, announcing my allergies, on arriving my menu options are with the main menu, which is an absolute miracle for someone with my allergies. My meal this evening was absolutely outstanding. I had Angus Burger, I haven't had a burger for around five years. It was so lovely and the gluten free bun one of the best I've ever tasted. We are definitely going back. So to sum up, allergies or not, give No 1, Wooler a visit

We stayed overnight on a Saturday. First the positives, the staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner was served quickly but while there was a decent range of food on the menu it was all at the same price and more than I would expect to pay for what was average pub type food. Breakfast had a basic range of hot food, cereal, toast, and fruit juice. The accommodation was OK, the decor is a little quirky, the bed was comfortable. The tap over the bathroom sink only ran hot water - out of both hot and cold taps. It was the same in another room. And now the reason for the 1 star rating: This establishment calls itself a hotel and wine lounge, as such I expect to be able to get a quiet nights sleep. After dinner, about 8.45pm we retired to our room to watch some TV for an hour or so as we were tired after travelling up from the south of the country. At about 9pm we heard a guitar being tuned up below our room. Shortly after that an hours worth of live music began! It was so loud we could not hear the TV and our bed was vibrating. At 10.15pm there was a half hour break, then the music started up again and continued until approx. 10 minutes past midnight. It was not gentle relaxing music, for the most part it was heavy rock. If the staff had bothered to let us know there was a live music show that night we could have sorted something out. As it was, I think it was quite appalling treatment and firmly believe that they should not let out rooms directly above where live music is playing if they want to call themselves an hotel. My recommendation is to check before you go for any live music shows, and if there are, insist on a room at the back of the hotel, otherwise avoid entirely.

Very happy to have booked here after a long wet day walking St Cuthbert’s way. We stayed in room 8 which has TWO huge claw foot baths and a great power shower .. we managed to get our weary legs up the stairs to the bathroom (quirky layout which we did not mind) and enjoyed a well deserved soak. Very comfortable and lovely bedroom with tea/coffee/biscuits. Very friendly staff. Loses a point as we had to wait over an hour for our breakfast even though we were there at 8.35am, 5 mins after the start of breakfast service and had ordered the night before .Whilst it was nice, it threw our whole walking schedule out. My suggestion would be that if walkers are a target audience, breakfast should start at 7.30 and be prompt!

It is an interesting old building but with a modern feel in the dining room. The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful BUT NONE OF THEM WERE WEARING FACE COVERINGS which was a bit off putting given the times we live in.We had the tapas which was a good decision, an interesting variety of dishes on offer, most of which were very good indeed but the raw garlic on toasted bread and tomato was perhaps not the best. Mains were acceptable quality, but maybe we were just hungry. Then we asked for additional condiments and they were not given. Then our drinks were taken away before we had finished eating or drinking. No. 3 and most problematically, Sticky Toffee Pudding was only 2/3 actually edible because a third of it was rock solid. We visited the No 1 hotel for dinner last Saturday as we had 6 friends visiting us in Wooler. Because of the Covid rules we had to sit on 2 tables of 4 people spaced apart but we were put next to each other so we could still socialize across the space. I saw a waitress wiping down a table and chairs when someone left and there is hand sanitizer when you enter so we all felt very safe. We ordered 12 Tapas for our table of 4 and enjoyed every one of them, our favorite being the chicken in batter with honey and mustard sauce. I love the decoration of the climbing tree along the ceiling lit with lights and it being a dog friendly place with a lovely resident laid back Labrador called Sam. Having recently moved to Wooler this will become my ‘local’ pub/restaurant and I’ll be taking more of my friends there when they visit.

Booked unseen on line. Great reception when we arrived. We did phone ahead to say we would be late which appears to have been appreciated. Sam the dog met us at the door which was a wonderful-welcome. Lovely room, quiet with great facilities. Excellent breakfast layout, choice and quantity. Very relaxing, very friendly and appears to be excellent value.

Had an anniversary weekend in Wooler last October, staying at No 1 Hotel and Wine Lodge. The hotel was good value for money, modern, comfortable and quiet, and the restaurant was very atmospheric and cosy with its tree feature across the ceiling. The food was good, the service very friendly, and we had a very enjoyable stay.

We spent a very pleasant evening here with friends and greatly enjoyed the Tapas and atmosphere. The restaurant is beautifully appointed and the food and cocktails were excellent. The kitchen and bar did seem a bit overwhelmed (and the front of house team a little stressed) and the food took some time to arrive, but it was worth the wait, and allowed time to peruse the cocktail menu further.

We decided to have tapas in the hotel for tea and I was so pleased we did, the food was amazing and reasonably priced. Can’t praise the staff enough, nothing was a bother and they made you feel so welcome x if you want beautiful accommodation with friendly and helpful staff this is the place to go. 10 out of 10 loved my stay and will return x x

Three of us went here while staying in the Youth Hostel just up the road. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food choice was excellent and we had some squid, taps, skewers, etc. all of which were excellent and large servings. Dessert was good too. They had a number of wines but didn't do draught beers. They did have a 'fancy' draught lager which was a bit expensive but was ok.

Have been a few times now, food was he usual decent standard, only put off by the older man who seems to walk around in his own little world with a Golden Retriever all night, stopping at some tables to talk and stop while people are trying to eat their food, his banter at best was cringeworthy. The dog just lies anywhere, fair enough it’s a dog friendly bar, but keep it out the restaurant through the back especially when there a load of hair all over the carpet every time it gets up.

A return visit after two years. We had heard the Hotel had changed hands but we were pleased to find that our tapas meal was as enjoyable as it had been before. We booked ahead and indeed the restaurant was busy. There was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Staff were friendly and efficient. There was a good choice of tapas on offer. It was all delicious but the portions were much larger than those normally associated with Tapas Restaurants. (the Northumberland take?). The desserts were delicious too. Highly recommended.

We visit the No1 regularly and I have to say Bill, Lesley and the Team are fantastic. There’s nothing that cannot be accommodated. The Tapas menu is fantastic, there’s a good choice and generous for the price. There’s an excellent range of drinks. Your always met with a smiling face and a quick chat and catch up no matter how busy the Hotel is. This place is the benchmark for independent hotels in my opinion. Fabulous.

We stayed at the no 1 Hotel for two nights. We were put in bedroom 5, which appeared OK until about 5pm, when the atmosphere started smelling like a chip shop and there was a loud noise from a fan coming through the window which we had open due to the heat. On our way out to eat we raised the issue with the manager who immediately upgraded us to a better room which was much better. Problem solved. Well done the management. Breakfast was OK, but not amazing. The coffee was a bit stewed as it sits in a kenco type filter machine. The rooms are a bit quirky with bits of driftwood everywhere.

We stayed in Wooler for just one night and the hotel was a real gem. The Owner was so helpful and friendly . Our room was large and extremely comfortable - the bed was enormous! We had dinner in the hotel - the Tapas were perfect for us as we ordered some dishes, then more. After years of chain hotels it is so refreshing to find somewhere with its own character .

. . . eat at the Italian restaurant across the street. And if you have two nights in Wooler? Eat again at the Italian restaurant across the street. The No. 1 Wine Restaurant is very far indeed from being No. 1. The service, to start with, is perfunctory at best. We had three different servers, none of whom showed the tiniest interest in us. "Ready to order drinks?" "Hmm, well, perhaps we could see the wine list first?" "Ready to order your food? Just gimme the numbers." Once the food was plopped down on our table, that was it -- no one approached us again to ask if we needed anything further or if everything was alright.

I can’t speak for the others but Room 11 is enormous. It’s a family room with a king bed and a twin. The peaked ceiling is at least 12’ height and the is about 20’ long by 12’ wide. Five skylights. You could play table tennis in here. Very large L-shape couch, table for 3people, large armoire. Small bathroom for a room this big. Shower but no tub. The only negative is the artwork which is an odd combination of street scenes in Paris with Scottish stags and tartan. Also, there are 2 odd chandeliers, one traditional and the other modern. Who decorated this place? But again, this is a huge, very comfortable room and I would definitely stay here again.

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.

My cousin and I were hugely impressed by Castaways. I had been reluctant to go because about 20 years ago the original café had been taken over by a useless couple. But when I passed and looked in, I could see that its original atmosphere had been recreated by the current management. Our reception was very friendly. The café was full (always a good sign) and we were third in the queue. Our table was soon ready and we were seatedby a waitress. We were very comfortable and the atmosphere was nice. Many pleasant people there as customers happily dining and chatting. Good choice of food and drink. I had the traditional breakfast and my cousin had… I think it was avocado and egg on sourdough bread. We were both very content with our lunch. I will certainly return and bring members of my family to enjoy castaways. Nicely sited, easy car parking and great views over Seaton Sluice and the sea. Get yourself along there and have a treat!
