Nicko's in Melton

If youre a visitor to melton mowbray and want perfect fish and chips NICKOS is the one! just had a sit in haddock chips and mushy peas and curry sauce and a mug of tea --- sublime!!! Dont miss it please, they are on a different planet!!

This is the second time this has happened to us and to be honest, we never plan to order from this place ever again. We ordered face to face, everything was wrapped up and when we got home we realised that our fish was missing and as we live outside of Melton we decided not to drive all the way back. The staff even crossed it off our receipt!

My regular port of call in Melton for Fish & Chips, with adequate seating and cheerful service when I opt to eat in.

Visited on Friday 13th May 22. Lunchtime approx 1pm. Shop was quiet. I asked for Haddock & Chips. I was told "about 5 - 10 mins". I wasn't told what the wait was for & I surprised at having to wait at all, but walked round the block. On return they gave me what I thought I'd ordered. I walked the 10 mins back home. On tasting, I now found & got 2 small Cod & not Haddock. I ate the lot, but was annoyed. I walked back to the shop & confronted the very English (& an unlikely Greek) manager. He said "he thought it was Haddock". You're a liar & just wanted to use up old fish matety. You've lost a customer for ever. I xxxxing hate bullxxxxers.

Stayed in Mowbray for a few days. Went to Nicko’s first night for quick dinner. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Spotlessly clean. Lovely meal, nearly as good as my local in Saffron Walden! Maybe I’m biased. Will certainly visit again next time.

Needing a break on a long drive we spotted Nicko’s. Really impressed, nice food, good price and lovely people

The chips were so dry you could use them as sawdust to cover the floor of a rabbits cage. How they could sell these as edible I will never know. Half were bad, the rest could break your teeth.

Regular visitor to Nickos for years and its always been consistently high quality…chips are excellent with sausage and without sausage. Or sausage on its own

We visited here to grab a quick takeaway whilst on holiday. I can’t grumble much, the chips weren’t that great, lots of “bits” rather than full on chips. Overall it was ok but not one of the better chip shops we have visited.

Really yummy fish and chips, nice portion size. Chips perfectly cooked, hot,crispy with a fluffy inside. All staff we encountered were lovely and friendly - service quick but not rushed.

We were nicely surprised by our experience,the place itself is very clean and tidy.Nice decor in the restaurant side,no overpowering cooking smells.The food was cooked perfectly and the portions are large. Exceptional value and nice friendly service.We will definitely be back as regulars as the menu is extensive and I want to try most of it at some time or other.Well done Nicko's keep it up the standards are great.Long opening hours and a short walk from the centre of town.

Nicko's is a great place for a quick but high quality bite to eat! The staff are extremely friendly and the food are of great quality and are big in portions! Me and my friend, Ben Canham come here pretty often and always enjoy it here and is highly, highly, highly recommended to everyone!

Nicko's is what a local Chippy is all about. Great town centre location,simple but attractive premises; clean, well laid out, with welcoming, genial, competent staff and first class fare. Service was efficiently & cheerfully delivered with a smile, by a charming lady. The dishes were piping hot, with all required accoutrements. The contemporary furnishings were functional and comfortable enough, with the general ambience bright & cheerful. I had a succulent, meaty steak & kidney pie & chips, with the best gravy for ages. Portions were generous and well presented, as was my companion's fish, chips with mushy peas. The inclusive accompanying cuppas too, were First class Prices were very fair, representing good value. All in all, up there with the best in class.

Nikos is my favourite chip shop in melton never had a bad meal food always fresh I had mini fish chips and peas was great staff really friendly so if your looking for great food try nikos

I called here on a Tues as it was market day so went for a wander round. Tried to find a café that wasn't full as I have a walking frame. On the way back to the car found the chipshop by accident . Grateful of the sit down we just wanted a drink but thought we might as well get something to eat.Im so glad we did.I had a chicken wrap that was realy nice and the other party had mini fish and chips.Well there was nothing mini about the fish at all.The fish was cooked to perfection and the batter.For £6.50 you had a mini fish and chips with a selection of sides to go with it ,grave or peas etc and you had a cup of tea or coffee in the price too.My chicken wrap was very nice and came with some salad in it.Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough.We went in the café side but it does have 3 steps inside up to the some other tables if the bottoms ones are full.So if you are disabled its worth looking at.But there is 3 tables downstairs too.

had a weekend away to oakham and came to melton for the day i had small cod and chips with mushy peas my partner had a large cod and cheesy chips. We were both amazed by how big the fish was and it tasted so fresh was perfect size of chips and honestly it was all good accept the mushy peas but i find most chippys are not good with mushy peas. the waitress was lovely and was so polite only negatives were mushy peas and milkshake taste like slimfastbut the rest of fabulous

Absolutely disgusted with this place, had a little family get together and ordered our food from here, completely horrified to find a live caterpillar wriggling around in it! Obviously don’t wash their salad etc, when we intially rang up to inform them we were told that it must have flown in there?! Seriously?? Then to get a refund we had to travel back and return the food despite having recorded evidence. Absolutely shocking, this establishment will be reported and will continue to advise people not to eat from there.

During a recent visit to Melton Mowbray, I stayed in the Premier Inn which usually has a limited selection of dishes for supper. I decided to venture out to sample some local fish and chips. I was pleased to see that only a 2 minute walk away from the hotel was Nickos, and they had a cafe where you could eat inside.

Nicko's have absolutely the biggest fish in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire! I have work colleagues who come specifically from Nottingham to get Nicko's fish and chips! The staff are always friendly, the counters are spotlessly clean and the prices are good. Top quality each and every time, and we go once a month. Highly recommended!

The shop staff are very friendly and the food is great, there is a good selection of fish, kebabs and other stuff eg fish cakes cheese etc

Have used Nicko's on several occasions have always had good fresh fish & Chips to take away and eat at home, service is good and friendly, would recommend.

Not been to Nicko's for a few years but was delighted with the fish and chips. The fish was excellent, well cooked, chips were hot and not too greasy

Ain't got anything bad to say about this place, they have been in Melton for 50 YEARS PEOPLE!!! and it has always been the same family that owns it, they definitely have been doing it right for sure! AND A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO NICKOS FISH BAR FOR HITTING THE BIG 50 years woop woop

The staff here are so friendly and nothing seems too much trouble. We ordered dinner for five to take out on a busy Friday night. Our meal was ready to leave in under five minutes and the fish was the best I've tasted. All in all perfect food and service. We will definitely come again.

Where do I even begin! I am outraged! After a long day of bird watching I decided, out of all the restaurants to go to Nicko's. Somehow, they managed to quadruple the batter on the fish, but still give me mushy peas instead of curry sauce. Being the nice individual that I am, I let this pass to try and enjoy my meal. The fish it'self was very dry due to the over battering. Also it was more skin than it was actual fish. Very upsetting. The chips were burnt, yet raw at the same time. Simple upsetting. This experience has changed my view on fish and chips forever. Thanks Nicko >=^(

not even a fish! the food probably had some kind of invincible salmonella and the fish was undercooked and plastic!

Had a mini sausage and chips - big portion - nice attentive staff - good food and very good value. We will be back.

La otra mitad compró pescado y patatas fritas de Nickos casa (15 minutos en auto). Tuve abadejo. Tenían fritos que recién mientras esperaba, y realmente fue el más delicioso y fresco, húmedo, abadejo he tenido desde un fish and chips. Rara vez comer pescado y patatas fritas, y yo no he comido abadejo durante muchos años como me hubiera ido, pero era pescado precioso y muy recomendable. Las patatas fritas eran muy agradable también, para un "fish and chips" - les metimos en el horno durante unos minutos una vez que llegamos a la casa, y el pescado también (aunque lo intenté antes y después del horno. ) y era realmente bueno. Una gran porción de patatas fritas fue suficiente para cuatro de nosotros (aunque no tenemos enormes platefuls de patatas fritas! ). Recomendado.

Parado para patatas y guisantes blandos con los niños porque sabía que podía comer dentro de aquí. Me dijeron que como no había pasado suficiente dinero no podíamos comer dentro. Yo estoy decepcionado enormemente y se vaya a océano azul en el futuro como sus fichas son normalmente mejor y que esperaba a comer lejos de la tienda de todos modos. Ha perdido un cliente Nickos.

La comida siempre caliente y a pedido, el personal amable y servicial. Zona de comedor está limpio y accesible. El menú es variado y es lo que esperas con pescado y patatas fritas, pastel y patatas fritas, etc., pero puede servir para una más "adelgazamiento" alternativa.

The only chippy in melton which serves curry sauce suitable for vegetarians, always been around and still going strong - keep it up lads

We had been looking for a chip shop all the way back from Runcorn. And was excited to see Nickos on the junction with easy parking on opposite side of road. There are a couple of tables so decided to sit in rather than eat in the car. Sadly we were dissapointed with the food we had a small haddock & chips for me and a standard for him. The portion size was good but the fish did not taste at all fresh and the batter was very greasy. In fact I squeezed the fat out by pressing my fork on it. The mushy peas were a very strange bright green and didn't taste of anything. Will not b going back.

If we're ever having a chippy night we will always go here. Never had a bad meal from you, fish lovely. Partner has the kebabs also very good. They do a delivery service to quite expensive on the delivery charge but if you can't be bothered to drive to get it it's good idea.

Literally stumbled over this place. A proper Fish & Chip shop with takeaway and sit down areas. I had a mini fish & chips - though it was far from mini - see the photo! The chips were excellent, with nice soft potato and clearly not stale or overcooked. The fish was properly cooked and the batter crisp with no after taste from the oil. I asked for tartare sauce and it came in a little pot - not a sachet - good point! Whole meal for a fiver - great value. The proprietor was very freindly and attentinve too. Enjoyable meal and experience

Good proper chips, fish is usually good and all the usual extras available inc kebabs. Not a really late opening at weekends but can eat in or take out. Apparently celebs have a take out from here if staying locally.
