Ngon Cafe in Newcastle upon Tyne

We chose this place for my birthday as I love Vietnam and Vietnamese food, we weren't disappointed, it's small and by British standards looks like a cafe rather than a restaurant. However, a lot of restaurants in Vietnam are like this so don't be put off. It is the real thing, fried and fresh Vietnamese spring rolls just like the ones you get in Hanoi, the noodles, rice and Pho were all lovely, Vietnamese beer and western wine at a decent price. Overall the cost of the meal was surprisingly low for three people and for what we ordered and ate. I love this place - the only disappointment is that I forgot to tip and I noticed the next day the no service charge was included in the bill - my fault - so sorry. However, I will be back and I'll tip next time. Thanks for a great addition to Newcastle's restaurants.

I’ve been to the restaurant twice ,once when in opening week and more recently and there has been no improvement in the food quality. Hue Soup was overwhelmingly salty with no other flavors, and the fish dish tasted extremely fishy. What’s worse, the table wasn’t even cleaned until we asked. My friend and I ended up leaving most of our food coz we were so disappointed.

A very strong 4 stars from us. A lovely little place with some very nice food! Vegan spring rolls were delicious. As was the shaken beef rice

Excellent authentic vietnamese food

It was fine, maybe a 3.5/5 but not good enough to return. Starters arrived well before our drinks which was weird. Iced tea was okay but expensive for what it is. My starter didn't arrive, a few minutes later isn't a problem but it was ages to wait. When it did arrive (prawns) one was warm and very tasty and the others were pretty cold so unappetising... then along comes the main course minutes after my starter, so everything at once which was annoying. If this is a usual issue it should be communicated when ordering as I wouldn't have bothered with a starter. My friend ordered fries but got rice and was then told they didn't have fries. The main (wok fried beef) was very tasty and enjoyable. Staff were friendly and apologetic for the wait. £27 seemed like a lot for what it was.

This Vietnamese café is the absolute best. The pho is very authentic and all the sides are definitely worth the price and are very flavourful. It never misses. The staff are really lovely and very accommodating. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really lovely with the lights and the music and it feels very authentic. this is always me and my boyfriend go to restaurant any time we go out and it just feels so warm and comfortable sitting and eating here with a nice big bowl of Pho. Please come here (or not I don’t want it to be busy 🫢🫢😉)

I recently visited this restaurant and had a very disappointing experience. The side dish that was supposed to accompany my Vietnamese pho never arrived, and the staff casually mentioned they forgot it. The pho broth was extremely bland, lacking any of the fresh flavor you would expect. The chili sauce had no heat or fragrance, making it completely ineffective. Despite the high prices, the portions were small, especially the beef. The chicken wings were flavorless, with just a faint hint of lemon. Overall, the food quality was poor, the portions were insufficient, and it was definitely not worth the cost. I left feeling unsatisfied and hungry.

I actually emailed the previous week asking what parking was available, with no response. It is very casual and had lots of Southeast asian customers, by which I was encouraged. One can of Fanta £2.50 One prawn fried noodles £13 One chicken pho £12.50. Tasty and large portions, but we were charged yet again for asking thm to put our considerablee leftovers into a decent takeaway.

Has a lunch time meal. Food was amazing, atmosphere was brilliant and the service was fantastic. I could really recommend Ngon Cafe.

My first experience of Vietnamese food. We visited early evening. Food was served quickly. It seemed that both starters & mains came together but this wasn't a problem. Quite a few young Vietnamese eating there & a busy takeaway/delivery service. I wasn't sure what to expect but enjoyed the meal

We had a wonderful evening here. Delicious summer roll followed by noodle soup bowls that never seemed to get empty. We were well fed, very good value, and had a great time.

Food was very good except the beef: it was chewy in my dish and full of fat in my husband's dish. The lady who served us was lovely and smily. The place is nicely decorated but quite cold (not heating in the winter) and not super clean (especially the bottles of sauces on the tables).

I usually went to Ngon cafe every week to have a Pho. The food is so fantastic! I really like it! The pho no.33 that being a spicy soup (but not spicy for me lol) is sooooo nice! I ordered this menu with chicken for 4weeks with the deep fried Vietnamese spring roll. It’s such a best combination and authentic Vietnamese food. The staff is nice and the students can use 10% discount! I will be back every week to have pho no.33 with chicken! I obsessed with it 😍🍜

Great place for a Vietnamese coffee

First time going to a Vietnamese restaurant and I was blown away! The sides are particularly good for vegans - summer rolls are so flavoursome and the chilli and lemongrass tofu is so crispy and moorish! I can't wait to go back to try more. Enjoyed the pho and I like that it comes with little garnishes to add yourself, but think it's better for non-vegans - my friend said the beef one was delicious. The portions are huge too! Also get the snow lemonade!!! I was so surprised by how sweet and tangy it is! Literally the most refreshing drink I've ever had in my life and I keep craving it! Very unexpected :)

The dishes are all delicious. I like pho and slow-braised beef We went there twice already. The staff is attentive despite being so busy. The oolong tea is also nice if you like Asian tea. 👍👍

This is a very pleasant place to eat. Best time to go is the start of lunchtime or early evening. The staff are really friendly, especially the young man who I think is the manager. The food was great served hot and in good time. Not expensive. Well worth a visit but dies get very busy. The staff are great at helping you with the menu.

Great little cafe style restaurant. Good menu of Vietnamese food. The coconut iced coffee was amazing. My first time having that. I had the vegan curry with rice. Nice portion, good selection of veg and a little spice. The Summer rolls were pretty good too. I'll definitely go back 👍

Firstly long list of ingredients on each option, but fails to mention peppers and onions POOR. I couldn't eat my food, when they asked is everything okay and I said no. They did nothing! Why bother asking if you aren't going to rectify and still charge? Not to mention, very poor selection for vegans like one main wow and very expensive. NOT RETURNING.

Not allergen friendly, was served food I was allergic to despite notifying staff. First time at the restaurant today and sadly we will not be returning. We are always keen to try local restaurants and support small businesses, however, this could have ended very badly. We ordered starters of fried tofu and chicken summer rolls, and mains of beef shin bun bo hue (the spicy one) and shaking beef rice. We also ordered a snow lemon juice. The waitress asked if there were any allergies and I asked for no seafood/shellfish. She reassured us we’d be ok with our order. We were waiting around 10-15 minutes for the starter which was acceptable, although it looked plain and colourless when it came. Thinking this was the fried tofu, we both tucked into it but I realised far too late that this was fried squid instead. We double checked with the waitress and she confirmed it was fried squid. I clarified that we had ordered the tofu and although she took the plate away, there was no apology and no concern as she did not seem to even remember the shellfish allergy. Then a serving tray of chicken summer rolls and fried tofu was carried in from the kitchen… straight to a different table. The customers said the tofu wasn’t theirs and she took it away, not even thinking it could be someone else’s. They kept and ate the summer rolls though, even though they had ordered the prawn and pork rolls (which they received later) and not the chicken one. I could clearly see it was ours but couldn’t shout this across a room full of people. More waiting until we got our mains. The shaking beef rice is incredibly expensive for what it is: 6-7 pieces of beef with no sauce and a big disproportionate serving of plain white rice. Very dry and lacking all flavour. The spicy beef pho looked exactly like the non-spicy version and tasted so bland. Our starters eventually came and tofu (definitely tofu this time) was ok. I had asked for peanut sauce with the summer rolls but she brought the hoisin sauce and said they had run out of peanut sauce. Why? Because the last one went to the table she mistakenly gave our order to. At this point, we had already had such a bad night we didn’t even say anything. The best part was the snow lemon juice which was quite nice. Luckily for the restaurant, I don’t react to all shellfish the same way and the squid did not cause any symptoms other than itchiness. We hardly ever go out for dinner and this was such a disappointing night after looking forward to it all week. I really wish I had said more when I was there or when we paid, but it can be so hard to say something publicly. However after thinking about it, it is important that this is fed back to management so other customers don’t experience what I did. I tried calling them many times to relay what I have said here but no one picked up and I can’t find other contact details. I hope the restaurant reads this and replies, because tonight could’ve ended up with dire consequences for everyone involved. Edit: Over a month later and no reply, highly disappointing.

It's not bad but I've had better but in London. Hits the spot if you fancy some pho and you're in Newcastle Authentic though. Lots of Vietnamese customers.

Suchhhh and underrated place!! Incredible Vietnamese food which always tastes and feels so fresh and good for your body, lovely vibes and excellent service at a very reasonable price

The only Vietnamese restaurant I found in Newcastle. It’s not too bad. The beef is soft, the soup is tasty, but vermicelli isn’t that authentic. I like how much coriander and onions they put in the soup. Makes it so much better. Although the slice of limes/lemons can be bigger? So it’s easier to squeeze. I think if the soup is hotter when it is served, their sprouts will be easier to be softened. The starter is over priced. The squid is not what I expected and don’t understand why it comes with such weird western sauce. I don’t think I will order starter again. I very much like the style of this place though, the lanterns are gorgeous. Such a lovely place to spend a lovely evening with your family and friends.

Tried this new place in town (Vietnamese cafe) which turns out pretty good 🤩🤩🤩 Pho is soo good and must try the coffee( too bad it’s serve in small cup, need more coffee!!! 😂). They also offer variety of vegetarian food Recent visit: Overall it was fantastic! One thing that stands out would be the fried chicken 10/10 . It is really delicious !! I was expecting a different types of grilled chicken but it was good. Love how the sauce for the grilled chicken does not have strong odour. Was it vinegar sauce? The pho is always great ❤️!!! - PHO-nomenal flavors that will leave you craving for more 🤤 It’s soup season now 🍜 and here’s to get the BEST pho in town!!!! Absolutely delicious - Newcastle has been crying out for a Vietnamese restaurant and Ngon deliver!

I'm torn. I had a lovely experience but the flavours just weren't there. Only had time for a selection of starters, but we're looking forward to trying the mains. Order summer rolls - lacking in the big punch of fresh herbs. Salt and pepper squid - delicate and light Sweet and sour chicken - pretty much what you'd expect.

First time coming here, food was served to us very fast, the foodover is something that should be tried by everyone, absolutely lovely. Server very friendly and goes above and beyond to ensure your visit is a good one

Have been here several times and always recommend it, but came last night at 8.15, party of 3 and the only customers in the restaurant. Ordered swiftly and food came together as the kitchen closed at 9, all of which is fine with us. Until at 9.05pm, an older man who I can only assume was a manager or owner came and rolled down the shutters and turned off the restaurant music, leaving us, the only table giving custom on a Monday night, in absolute silence. When we asked why the music had gone off the waitress told us the ‘ipad needed to be charged’ but that we could stay as long as we liked. We hadn’t finished our meals or drinks but promptly left due to the fact we were sat in complete silence and were obviously very unwanted. You should not expect customers to eat and converse in complete silence behind shuttered windows. Regrettably we won’t return due to this experience

The food came quickly. They had run out of rare beef so I went for the special pho for £12. It was filling, but bland (that might just be my opinion of pho in general). I would come back to try other dishes.

Truly excellent food, and the pho was some of the best I've had, and I've had a few real quality bowls before. They didn't serve it with the customary side plate of bean sprouts, herbs, and chilis like they have in some pictures here, so I dunno if that's extra or something, or if they just forgot, but I didn't really care cos it was delicious already. I also had the best salt & pepper prawns I've ever had, and I will now ALWAYS order them whenever I visit. They were truly perfect. Just a quick side note - my tall, heavy-set friend wasn't particularly comfortable sitting on the window bench, cos there's no cushions, so maybe bring your own if you think you may need one.

The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Basic inside, but don’t let that put you off, it’s a little hidden gem of a place.

When I open the bowl, the aroma of tomato broth and the flavors of crab, shrimp, meat, and tofu fill the air, making me crave it at first sight. The soft and tender vermicelli absorbs the broth, creating a delicious and enticing sensation. Love it❤️. Definitely will be back!!

WORST PHO EVER!! Cold, tasteless, cloudy pho soup! I love pho, I have been to many Vietnamese restaurants and I have never been so disappointed and disgusted honestly. I took my friends here and I was embarrassed. There were lumps of compressed meat floating in the bowl that were stone cold. The soup was opaque and very cold. More taste in a bottle of Evian, I could not believe it. I have made better winging it myself. Horrible atmosphere. AVOID at all costs, nastiest meal l've ever been served.

The food was lovely. I had the Bun Cha which was a lovely vegan option. The portion size was massive. Staff were lovely and there was a nice family atmosphere.

Very happy to have visited Ngon cafe. The atmosphere is very casual and laid back, conducive to conversation over an excellent bottle of Hanoi beer or a superb drip coffee. The food is plentiful, aromatic and incredibly well cooked and tasty.

Great food, cosy place, fair prices, would definitely recommend! The staff didnt seem the most experienced and the shop across the street has closed down so it's an empty street view, but the food was good. They did end up bringing and billing for a different wine as we asked for though.

We had special pho and rare beef pho. The broth didn’t taste like the authentic ones which are boiled with beef bone. It is bland and flavourless. When the pho are served, they stick together like a disc and got broken when I tried to pick’em up. Good and comfy atmosphere.

Ordered grilled pork rice noodles and Vietnamese rice roll for hungry panda delivery. They completely forgot to give me fish sauce, so I’ve to eat dry noodles and rice rolls. Also, the Vietnamese rice roll is supposed to have mushrooms and minced pork but they ended up giving me plain rice rolls! Very disappointing.

My partner and I had a very disappointing meal here. We ordered the Goi Cuon (summer rolls) as a starter, which came after the mains and were extremely bland. For our mains, that came before the starter, I ordered Com Bo Kho. The beef was awful. There were huge lumps of fat and gristle that were inedible and I had to peel sheets of sinew from the pieces that were edible. My partner enjoyed her main of Mi Xao Hai San, however she explained that it was far from special. Our drinks, which we ordered first, arrived after all of the food. When paying, we were offered a discount if we paid cash. I can only imagine this is to avoid paying the tax man. We won't be back. One other point, their chairs are some of the most uncomfortable I've ever sat in!

Ordered beef pho and banh cuon. The beef pho was tasty but lacked the traditional accompaniments of beansprouts, coriander, basil, chilli, and lime. The banh cuon needed to be lighter and the ham on top needed to be fresh, not dried out. I would go back for the pho, but not the banh cuon.

Overall the food was decent, if a bit of a mixed bag. The spring rolls and chicken wings for the starters were nice, while the fish stew for the main was not. The pho was decent. The service was a letdown. Though the staff were friendly enough, one of the dishes we ordered was lost, so when it eventually came, it was long after we'd finished the rest of the meal. Also, our drinks never came. Not a particularly bad experience overall, but not good enough for me to considering returning.

So happy to know that a newly-opened Vietnamese Restaurant has come to town! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here! I ordered the Rare Beef Pho (Pho Tai Chin) and the broth was rich-tasting with it's flat noodles cooked to perfection. Michelle asked for Tofu instead of chicken in her Chicken Noodle Soup (Pho Ga) - she loved it. Vegetarian Spring Rolls (Nem Ran Chay) with the sauces were delicious. I'd recommend this spot to any Vietnamese food lover. It's an easy 5 star.

I love Vietnamese food and got taken here on Valentine’s day. It is now one of my favourite restaurants i’ve been to. It’s sad to see the lack of Vietnamese places in Newcastle however, Ngon Cafe makes up for it entirely. I decided to get two starters instead of a main so I ordered the vegetable spring rolls and tofu summer rolls. Although I usually prefer summer rolls over spring rolls, this time was different. Both dishes were very good but spring rolls might just be the best i’ve ever had. They each came with a side of sweet chili sauce so an explanation for liking the spring rolls more would be that I favour a peanut sauce with summer rolls. The spring rolls were so good I even tried to order a second portion however, they unfortunately ran out. My boyfriend had the beef stew and we spent a very long time sitting there as he was adamant to finish what he said was a winning stew. He said it was incredibly flavourful and the beef was super tender. I wish I had taken pictures as I don’t even remember what the presentation was like because the food was so good. The staff were very sweet, accommodating and patient. The interiors were nice and the ambience was great whilst managing to not overpower the dishes. The prices were insanely good and I would have happily paid more. As a university student this restaurant is a great way to feel like you are treating yourself to a ‘nice’ dinner without breaking the bank.

Avoid or be disappointed. The food that was ordered was incorrect. 2 of us was eating whilst the third member of our party had to reorder due to not having the product. The beef that did come was just fat and disgusting. The staff didn't have any knowledge of what they were serving or the ingredients on the menu (people with allergies. Go at your own risk) There is more to say, but I'll let you decide.

Delicious! I had Special Pho and Summer Rolls. It was all just soooo good! 🤤 The place gets really busy in the evening so book ahead if you're coming with more than 2 people. Staff was very friendly and food was ready really quickly 😊

Beef pho broth was not flavourful enough, noodles were the thicker type, would've preferred the thinner and smoother type. Coffee was good. Spring rolls were amazing. Sadly the pho was not the best.

Delicious food, healthy, fresh, clean and moreish. I’ve been twice and can’t wait to go back again. The service is friendly and professional and it has a warm unpretentious atmosphere. Nothing to improve. Brilliant new restaurant we’re lucky to have in Newcastle.

Tasty, affordable food. Not a bad dish on the menu. Plenty of choice. Pot of jasmine tea for only 1.5£ and had it refilled 3 times at no cost. Lovely atmosphere and very polite, attentive staff. Highly recommend for those who want to sample Vietnamese cuisine in Newcastle
