Having lived in the Cayman Islands many years ago, imagine our surprise when our local pub was reopened by Dwight and his team offering genuine Caribbean food! At first we tried a takeaway, chicken curry with rice and peas. Absolutely delicious and an authentic recipe! Four of us went last night and received a very warm welcome from Dwight and his staff. Jerk chicken, chicken curry and goat curry were served and heartily consumed along with the usual accompaniments, rice and peas, coleslaw, steamed veg and plantains. Absolutely fabulous!! My mate said it was the best goat curry that he’d eaten in this country!! All washed down with draught Red Stripe!! The food portions were generous and the prices were very good and provided value for money!! The pub was clean and tidy and the atmosphere was buzzing, the latter aided by a DJ serving up a menu of reggae, ska, soca etc. Banging!! We will be returning on a regular basis!! Well done Dwight and team!!

I travelled to the New Zealand Arms with family from Walsall. It was a quiet Sunday, an ideal place for Lunch and a Beer. We all enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was great.

As a group of friends, we get together once or twice a year for an Ale Trail which consists of six pubs in Derby, one of which is designated for a food stop. Derby is a major Camra City, with an excellent choice of real ale houses to choose from. On this occasion the New Zealand Arms failed to impress, in terms of food (quantity for 20 people) and also in the choice and quality of beer. This pub has a good reputation for both food and ale up until recently and really needs to step standards if it wants to complete with the other locals nearby. In fairness the staff tried to help, but were not well enough prepared in my view.

Come here almost every week, just a very feel-nice place. Friendly and professional staff, surrounded by a wide choice bar with plenty of ales, beers and ciders to choose from. Always fun if you fancy some darts or pool and they have live music on Fridays!

Called in as was passing close by and probably expected, what I believe is a Dancing Duck Brewery pub, somewhere much better. Sadly they did not have Dark Drake on the hand pumps (I quite fancied a pint of that) and the bar area felt rather soulless. Maybe a mid Sunday afternoon wasn't the best time to visit?

This is a great tucked away back street pub that's got it right. Friendly bar staff and good variety of alcohol. Pool, darts and all sorts. To me a pub defines itself by the quality of drink and the entertainment it puts on. Some of the music nights don't excel but the pub quiz on a Tuesday brings an unexpected dimension to the pub every week. It happily walks the knife edge of political correctness and this experience is not for the moral high ground junkies.

My partner and myself have been here a lot over the past month and every time it's been exceptional! If you like an old school pub that is dog friendly this is your place. The team that work here are always friendly and polite, always happy to help. whilst the menu at first glance looks limited, the food is amazing! Always perfect and fantastic portions for the money that you pay, with the added bonus of the lovely Karen who is the master of the food! Would recommend a visit to anyone especially music and dog lovers, a fantastic little pub keeping traditional pubs alive.... my partner ollie also recommends the real ale!

We've been here a couple of time now. Its a most friendly pub with some excellent beers on tap. But you must go and try the food its mostly homemade if not all homemade and such great value. I had the cottage pie and it was out of this world. I can honestly say i have never had one so good before. We will be returning again and again to sample the rest of the menu.

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch with life long friend and her dad. Although they were busy it was as fabulous as any other time we have visited. Everything Karl likes about a meal out New Zealand provided great food, servive and a comfortable environment. Thank you again for a lovely Sunday treat.

Home cooked, piping hot, 5 different meats, road potatoes, stuffing, mash, vegetables, gravy, and mint sauce!! Nothing more to say really?! Ow and all that for less than £7?! One thing to watch for is that they only serve roasts on a Sunday and their usually menu is available Tuesday to Saturday. Put it this way.........any day you go you will not be disappointed! Excellent!

Had a Sunday dinner here again today...spot on as always! Lovely big plates of piping hot food, meat (chicken/lamb/beef/pork/veggie sausages) yorkshire pudding, mash, roasties and a huge pile of veg smothered in gravy!! Mmmmm! Superb value for money at £6.50 and genuinely friendly service from all the staff (we especially love the little lady who serves on Sundays!) I have heard on the grapevine that this place is being taken over in January...I really hope the food doesn't change.

Four of us visited this pub purely because of its name. We used to work together in New Zealand and were having a golf reunion nearby. We had no idea what to expect. What we got was a warm welcome from the young lady behind the bar and the chef when she brought our food out. The food was excellent as was the beer. This is how pubs should be.

This used to be a bit rough but has been gentrified. Since Dancing Duck took over it has gone from strength to strength. No more kids screaming about the place, tricycles at the bar etc. It is back to an adults drinking establishment.

Quickly identified this as our local after moving to Derby. It's a very friendly old traditional boozer and has quiz nights etc. we did eat there once and were pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't book it for a special occasion but If your a little peckish and are having a few drinks it's worth a try.

Lovely Sunday dinner, £6.50 gets you a really nice home cooked dinner of either beef, chicken, pork or veggie sausages...good portions and great value! We all really enjoyed ours! Not many dining tables though so get in early (times are 12-4pm)

We visit this pub every time we visit our friends in Derby. Tasty and plentiful Sunday lunch accompanied by a pint of very good real ale from their home produced range. What's not to like?

New management seem more at home keeping court with their mates rather than keeping customers happy. Had a dud pint and was told that it was how it was delivered....which doesn't make it right! Dud beer is dud beer regardless.Shame, used to be so good.

The Sunday lunches are old school. Not a small, fancy stack of pink beef with a few carefully arranged, undercooked veg and a smear of gravy. We got a large plate full of meat, many different veg, tons of gravy....just like your mum used to make. Not haut cuisine but a classic Sunday roast. We loved it and it cost just £5.50The Dancing Duck beers are very well kept.Nice staff. One of my favorite pubs in Derby.

having experienced this pub for the first time on Sunday for a meal I was very impressed with all aspects of this friendly pub, the staff were brilliant, the ales and cider were superb and the meal was impressive. The only negative was as a small eater I was unable to purchase the child/oap size dinner available and as a consequence only managed to eat half of my small adults meal. Maybe this should be taken into consideration for all us little eaters, on the upside I was able to take home a 'doggy bag' and enjoyed a lovely bubble + squeak later!

One of the best (if not the best) pub in Derby which, as the real capital of the world, offers lots of competition. The beer is always excellent, a good choice and very fair prices (£2.60 a pint). The bar staff and other clientele are very friendly and, despite normally being busy, I've never had to wait to be served. The food does not pretend to be fine dining and isn't. Instead it is hearty, well cooked basic dishes served in large portions and at very reasonable prices (typically about £5 per meal). The chef/cook seems to take pride in what she serves.Various activities on different nights and I'd recommend the Thursday open mic night and the Saturday bands (all free). Note that food is served Monday to Friday (and Sunday lunchtime) only.

Well what a sad review to write. The team have been pulled apart under the closure terms, many of which have been made redundant from a career they have worked in for decades. Until the news it has always been great food and great service. Understandable that they slipped a bit given the circumstances. Thank you all for your years of service to us all. All the best for the whole team for the future. Derby will miss The Mallard!
