Newton Fish Bar in Sandwell

At first glance looked like a decent chippy, basically is a chippy with an off license inside as they also sell alcohol which seemed great. When uncle said £13 for masala fish and battered chips I was taken aback… who pays more than £7 for masala fish, I get it’s a cost of living but phwoar and on top of that unc charges £2.50 for a small portion of side salad, unsure who’s in charge of the marketing and pricing but come on, do better. To get into the actual review of the food I was majorly disappointed, I thought the masala fish and chips would be 10/10 because of the price but the fish was extremely salty and this is from someone who loves their sodium, I couldn’t understand how they thought this much salt was okay, further more the fish wasn’t even fresh upon biting into it, seemed like they put all that food colouring and salt to take away from the fact that this fish looked like it had been sitting under the heater for lord knows how many days and then refried. The fish was dry inside and stringy, I could feel each strand of the fish meat in my mouth that’s how old and dry it was. The chips were OK, weren’t fresh and crispy but good in comparison to the fish! We also got wings and chips and they did not seem fresh either! Won’t be coming here again, not a great chippy.

Order was delayed twice and received the smallest portions! Waited over an hour and considering the prices, the portions were so small!

Asked for a large tray of donner meat, i was expecting wafer thin slices of donner but he took some out of a pot he precut. I said to the worker the pieces looked chunky and that i don’t like chunky donner meat but thinly sliced donner. He said it was thinly sliced meat he cut earlier. Clearly lied, waste of a journey as well as the 8.50 paid for the meat.

food was freezing cold my naan bread was so thin and soggy was a garlic naan couldnt taste any garlic never seen a naan like that b4 seafood was out of date tasted disgusting food didn't get eaten it cost alot won't be ordering again.

The battered chips are some of the best chips I've ever had I always have them with just salt no vinegar and it keeps them nice n crispy

I ordered a fish burger only to get a mini fish broken in half and put in a bun. Very disappointed. Chips were on the cold side and didn't taste very fresh.

Staff were friendly. Just passing by and wanted chips, got battered chips! Never heard of them before! Visiting from down south and had a lovely surprise. Quick service too.

My honest review - having moved into the area a few years ago. I went into this establishment but it wasn't a service with a smile. Absolutely no personality it felt as if I'd put the staff member out his way by coming into the shop and buying food. Yes 'buying' I wasn't asking for it for free! Roll the clock forward 6 years and yes still miserable so I walk past. Save your cash and skip across the road to the German supermarket and get some crispy oven chips. Your wallet and heart more importantly will thank you.

Asked for normal chips, not battered and was told they would be cooked fresh to order. Waited for these, service was good and staff were friendly. When we got home, I think we were given the ends of potato that were meant for the bin. Every chip was discoloured and had black parts. One piece even had roots coming out of it! Wasted most of the chips as they were inedible. Won't be returning. Will stick to hamstead fish bar.

Prices are way too high at the moment. £6.50 for mini fish and chips? £3.50 for a regular portion of chips? This is the only local chip shop where I can get battered chips so that’s why I continue to come here. The chips are delicious though

I'll be honest this is by far the best chippy I have ever tried and I've been to a lot!. Tried sea king, Warren farm, classics, hawthorn, college road, big John's(the worst), papas pizza and grill, Chris's fish bar, shady lane fish bar, ocean blue, Oliver's, seavers, circle fish bar, crossroads and smarts fish bar amongst others. Honestly your not Gona regret trying this place their battered chips are lovely, Donner meat lovely. The only thing I'd say they could improve is there chicken kebab. Not unless I went on a bad day but their chips and Donner meat is brilliant especially the chips. My dad's tried their fish and even he says it's really good. Do yourself a favour and just try. Trust me you won't regret it.

All was great apart from the gravy ordered didn't arrive, instead they sent curry sauce

Food came stone cold wasn’t happy

Fish was dry and had no flavour. Food was freezing as it was left outside, in cold weather. No knock on the door or call or text. I called them and that is when I was told it was left outside. Shocking. I would like a full refund.

Tried this place 3 times to give them a chance and each visit was as unpleasant as the last. This was down to overpriced items that are mediocre at best and they do not listen to order details. Most recently I asked for 2 meals and instead had everything packaged separate and subsequently charged separately seemingly so the business could get an extra couple of quid. Repeat business is what gets you that not those silly tactics. Also normal chips do not exist here? Neither does a friendly face. Honestly felt like they were always trying to hustle me out of an extra few quid. Won't be returning.

Food was hot. Chips were lovely, unfortunately the batter on the fish was too thick, making it very greasy.

Can’t fault their food! I made a couple of requests in terms of trades via message and everything was done. Quality on point and delivery on time. Really happy overall as all expectations met. I recommend their doner and tandoori wings 🙌🏽

Visiting the area and fancied some chips gave this place a go...WOW £3-20 for a potion of chips they were awful been cooked in the same oil as the fish as they had small flecks of batter over them. First and last time going there, shame you can't give NO Stars.

Ordered mixed meat kebab on nan but received the cheaper option on pitta bread, salad was fresh, chicken meat was better than the lamb, my daughter had small sausage and chips, chips great but the sausage over cooked.

The service was very unpleasant, two men, one accepted the order, the other made it ... what happened? Ordered mix kebab with fries, £7.50! served in pitta bread ... When I noticed that I was ordering with fries, the gentleman with a smile on his face told me that I had paid for the meat in pitta bread only. Shame on them ... When I asked him to add my fries, he charged me £ 3.20 for fries only - embarrassment! Fatty meat and fries burnt. And finally he gave me a change in Scottish Pounds🙂 The first and last time I was there! I do not recommend !!!

Sent my daughter there who's 11 and he charged her £3.40 for a small tray of chips!! (This is the price of a bag of chips) Obviously seen a young kid and thought rip them off!

Very pleasant staff. Can pay with card. The portion was a hefty one even for a technically "small" variation. Tasted good and made waiting for the bus more enjoyable. The little ones loved it!

Loved the food, chicken is tops. Unfortunately the few staff I have been served by seem to have an attitude, unless they are naturally rude. In short they either do not want my custom, could not care less or there is something else.

Nice food but it has to be the most expensive chip shop in Birmingham.

Bought some of the battered chips today. They are so delicious. Friendly and helpful staff, very clean and lots of good offers. I'll be back.

Got my order wrong, i wasted another 30 minutes of my time and fuel on a round trip, they blamed the mistake on the fact i had a face mask on. No apology was given, and the owner is very arrogant. He said ‘you’ll be back because my food is nice’, we’ll be going black country for our battered chips now. We only go there because we never need to queue and didn’t mind paying the inflated prices for not waiting. Very poor customer service, was spoken to rudely let alone being compensated for the inconvenience. Very disappointing.

Went in this chip shop for the first time. I found the staff so rude..the battered chips were oily and hard the chicken fillet burger were hard and dry i had ordered three..so basically. The food and service was awful will not be returning.

I wish I could give this place zero stars as this imbecilic place doesn't deserve a single star. I had fish and chips on 24th May and immediately found it extremely greasy and old. The next thing that happened was 11 vomiting sessions from that night right through to the next day. As a result, I was admitted to hospital which doctors told me I had food poisoning which had led to BORDERLINE SEPSIS due to the amount of vomiting I had done. Thanks Newton Fish Bar for nearly killing me with your week old fish and grubby chips as well as your own disgusting personal hygiene which played a big part to the poisoning. NEXT TIME, WASH YOUR FLIPPING HANDS AND SPRAY DISINFECTANT ON YOURSELF!!! NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN AS I WANT TO LIVE A LONG LIFE!!!

Had a piece of chicken today and now I have food poising will never eat here again even if my life depended on it rang up and don’t even think they have a food rating rang them up and I’ve got told to go back for some more chicken don’t want their chicken they need to get food inspectors round there and get it all checked out!!!!

I asked for a large kebab, I was not impressed by there large kebab, more like medium small and yet they charged £5.50, not value for money. It seems like there more interested in profit then quality. It was well below average, I would avoid this shop in the future. The quality of the meat very poor, taste, you may as well be eating cardboard. This is NO GREEK SHOP, you want a good kebab visit alridge Fish Shop, or able well. Avoid at all costs... A lovely little gem of a chippy that's overlooked. Been coming here for years, and will continue to do so!

The food is average, it was once my favourite chippy but recently the standard of the chips have seemed to slip.

Just avoid this place. Terrible service. I had a cold and the server misheard what I wanted and when I corrected him the look on his face was disgraceful. Really bad customer service skills at this place.
