Small, intimate pub with a fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff and customers and a great selection of ales. I'll definitely be back again!!

Excellent beer, excellent company, great landlord, proper boozer.

Well, I won't recommend the beer, although I do, as it is incredably unlikely to be the same as when I was here. Excellent little ale house. With an ever changing set of real ale FROM THE CASK. If you drink a proper english beer, this is a must if you are anywhere near Newport. You can also get some fizzy pop if your friends have not yet seen the light. To be fair, some interesting fizzy pop. 😀

A very appealing pub which provided a well-kept pint of Old Rosie cider, and as a bonus it was under £5.

What a fabulous place to try out a range of excellent beers in such a convivial and friendly atmosphere. We were welcomed by everyone in this cosy watering hole. It had a family feel and a must try if you are passing Newport.

Great little pub! If you're looking for a proper pub atmosphere the way it should be, snug and bustling with original ales to try, this is the place! Beware, it's small!

Maybe one day my lounge will look like this 😁. Small premises with a couple of ales on barrel as well as keg - CAMRA pub of the year 2023 says what you need to know. The landlord is an amusing chap who doesn't suffer fools, so don't be one!

This is a nice old school place, no food but I didn't want to give them zero for anything. you don't come hear for food, you come hear for Ale, hence been an Ale House! owner is top chap, locals are very frendy and happy to chat. smallest pub in IOW but the 6 of us all agree, it's the best!

Beer choice limited, bloke serving was surly and miserable, not into the idea of actually getting customers back again which is a pity as the place was completely empty and devoid of atmosphere. Must have been something great on the chaps ( Rodney I think his name was) phone as it took all his attention. Pity about the attitude, won't be returning

Nice place with 3 taps 3 kegs. £4.50 a pint. Free WiFi. Friendly service. They use real Ale finder app so you can see what they have on keg from the comfort of your home or hotel. .

Beers straight from the barrel,great if u like flat beer but not if u like a bit of life in it. Bloke that runs tha bar is a bit of a prick

Real 'beer', real pub, super friendly. Those that know, know. (Walked in and felt like it was my own local- cask ales, pickled eggs, and some!) When visiting, do look at the vast arrays of beer mats, not one repeated. A must visit place in Newport for a good ale.

A pub selling very nice real ale and regular beers, spirits and soft drinks. It consists of a one room bar with great character, a lovley snug for you and your friends.

Super friendly place with chatty locals. Selection of ales behind the bar and they do beer flights for the same price as a pint!

On my first quick visit there was a choice of three cask beers direct from the barrel. I had the tasty Elgoods Route 66. I did not enquire about food but this is a place for beer lovers and the locals were chatty.

Brilliant small pub serving real ales. Bar staff of Jamie and Jimmy are outstandingly helpful and friendly. A real pub as it was meant to be.

Friendly, wonderful interior, beer superb....what more could l want. The beer served on gravity, in great condition.

A great place especially if you are Real Ale fan. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon here. The locals made us very welcome as did the Landlord and his son. We will definitely visit again before we leave the island.

Lovely to find a traditional, friendly pub. Small selection of excellent beers and ciders but also sells wines and spirits. Nice and cosy.

Very nice choice of ales and friendly staff, the ale house is very cosy with only a small amount of seating, make sure to check out if your ever in newport. The classic feel really goes well here.

We visited just for drinks. The place was crowded: it is clearly popular with locals. There was a good friendly vibe. As the name suggests this is primarily a beer pub. Great - and the beer was good too. Staff were helpful too

This little gem of a pub is really quirky. It's the epitome of s traditional front room pub dating back to the 1800s. They serve an excellent range of real ales and cask ciders. They run regular quizzes and are family friendly.

Conversations you have are recorded. Not sure how. But just because a conversation between me and my daughter and the daughter of the landlord was apparently recorded. And then landlord became very abusive to his daughter. Very disturbing and would never recommend this pub unfortunately as it always looked like a very local comforting pub. But obviously too close for comfort. Disgusting behaviour from a landlord

Fantastic experience. Although a very small place the atmosphere along with superb ales make this a worthwhile visit.

A return to the historic version of a public house - literally the front room of an historic house in the centre of Newport serving beer on tap

Always a fine rotation of beer, accommodating a wide variety of tastes. Friendly service, very well priced and the locals are quick to include you in the conversation - well worth a visit on your trip to the Isle of Wight.

Having passed this location many times and it always been full we decided to go in when we saw there was a table free. There were three real ales on of which I had two which were both well kept. The barman was friendly and helpful. Due to the small size of the place it is full with about 15 people in, so it’s not the place to go if you’re wanting a private, quiet table for the evening!

Love this place! Great staff, great ale, warm and inviting!

Cracking little place to get your fix for ales, lagers and ciders and anything else they got on. There are only about a dozen seats though so if you're walking past and see an empty one then jump at the chance. This is a CAMRA-type place so don't expect mainstream beers. Deffo recommend supporting local watering holes rather than larger chains.

Corker of a micropub. A must visit.

We last visited the Ale House a couple of years ago, and had remembered it as having a wide selection of real ale. Sadly - and this may, of course, be a knock-on effect of the pandemic - the range was very limited and we left, somewhat disappointed, after only one beer.

Rod is an absolute lifesaver! Helped us out big time when we struggled with accomadtion. The guy seems like such a genuine person and has a great personality, was such a pleasure to meet. Would highly recommend this place.

Some previous reviews called this a local pub for local people. NOT OUR EXPERIENCE AT ALL Very helpful proprietor, who rang us when he had tables available. Good banter with both the proprietor and other customers (who did all seem like regulars) Beer served direct from barrels, absolutely the best way. Fair to say, not a place for a quiet drink in the corner as it's one small room. BTW, not a restaurant.

Was a bit wary about going after reading some iffy reviews but we were made to feel welcome alongside the regulars. We visited a few times and were served by 3 different, friendly staff. Plenty of other options, including Gin and wine, for those who don't drink beer. Takeouts are great for getting through the enforced 10pm closure.

One of two at the last count (the other in Cowes), both snug little ale havens offering some choice beers the way they should be served in good old fashioned pub atmosphere!

Probably the worst drinking spot on the island. Exceptionally hostile and sexist Landlord with a very large chip on his shoulder. If you are not a regular expect a very hostile environment. Landlord has small man syndrome and has a very bad approach to welcoming non islanders. Would definitely recommend the vast array of much nicer pubs and venues on the island with friendlier and more accommodating staff. There is so many to choose from. This place isn't even worth a look in.

Real ale spot on, ciders are amazing!

Rod and his staff are very knowledgeable in the ales on tap and they sell a nice range of ciders, also sell a lovely black german lager. It's a small,cosy little pub, with very friendly regulars and has just won best pub on the island by Camra.
