Newport Ale House in Isle of Wight

This is a nice old school place, no food but I didn't want to give them zero for anything. you don't come hear for food, you come hear for Ale, hence been an Ale House! owner is top chap, locals are very frendy and happy to chat. smallest pub in IOW but the 6 of us all agree, it's the best!

Beers straight from the barrel,great if u like flat beer but not if u like a bit of life in it. Bloke that runs tha bar is a bit of a prick

Real 'beer', real pub, super friendly. Those that know, know. (Walked in and felt like it was my own local- cask ales, pickled eggs, and some!) When visiting, do look at the vast arrays of beer mats, not one repeated. A must visit place in Newport for a good ale.

A pub selling very nice real ale and regular beers, spirits and soft drinks. It consists of a one room bar with great character, a lovley snug for you and your friends.

Super friendly place with chatty locals. Selection of ales behind the bar and they do beer flights for the same price as a pint!

On my first quick visit there was a choice of three cask beers direct from the barrel. I had the tasty Elgoods Route 66. I did not enquire about food but this is a place for beer lovers and the locals were chatty.

A great place especially if you are Real Ale fan. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon here. The locals made us very welcome as did the Landlord and his son. We will definitely visit again before we leave the island.

Very nice choice of ales and friendly staff, the ale house is very cosy with only a small amount of seating, make sure to check out if your ever in newport. The classic feel really goes well here.

This little gem of a pub is really quirky. It's the epitome of s traditional front room pub dating back to the 1800s. They serve an excellent range of real ales and cask ciders. They run regular quizzes and are family friendly.

Conversations you have are recorded. Not sure how. But just because a conversation between me and my daughter and the daughter of the landlord was apparently recorded. And then landlord became very abusive to his daughter. Very disturbing and would never recommend this pub unfortunately as it always looked like a very local comforting pub. But obviously too close for comfort. Disgusting behaviour from a landlord

Fantastic experience. Although a very small place the atmosphere along with superb ales make this a worthwhile visit.

Always a fine rotation of beer, accommodating a wide variety of tastes. Friendly service, very well priced and the locals are quick to include you in the conversation - well worth a visit on your trip to the Isle of Wight.

Love this place! Great staff, great ale, warm and inviting!

Cracking little place to get your fix for ales, lagers and ciders and anything else they got on. There are only about a dozen seats though so if you're walking past and see an empty one then jump at the chance. This is a CAMRA-type place so don't expect mainstream beers. Deffo recommend supporting local watering holes rather than larger chains.

Rod is an absolute lifesaver! Helped us out big time when we struggled with accomadtion. The guy seems like such a genuine person and has a great personality, was such a pleasure to meet. Would highly recommend this place.

Was a bit wary about going after reading some iffy reviews but we were made to feel welcome alongside the regulars. We visited a few times and were served by 3 different, friendly staff. Plenty of other options, including Gin and wine, for those who don't drink beer. Takeouts are great for getting through the enforced 10pm closure.

One of two at the last count (the other in Cowes), both snug little ale havens offering some choice beers the way they should be served in good old fashioned pub atmosphere!

Probably the worst drinking spot on the island. Exceptionally hostile and sexist Landlord with a very large chip on his shoulder. If you are not a regular expect a very hostile environment. Landlord has small man syndrome and has a very bad approach to welcoming non islanders. Would definitely recommend the vast array of much nicer pubs and venues on the island with friendlier and more accommodating staff. There is so many to choose from. This place isn't even worth a look in.

Real ale spot on, ciders are amazing!

Rod and his staff are very knowledgeable in the ales on tap and they sell a nice range of ciders, also sell a lovely black german lager. It's a small,cosy little pub, with very friendly regulars and has just won best pub on the island by Camra.

This is a really lovely town centre pub. With a superb landlord, who makes you feel very welcome. It's a shame the beer doesn't live up to the pub itself.

Tiny but very friendly pub in Newport. Definitely a pub for the locals but they were very welcoming to this solo traveller and it felt like a home away from home. A big shout out to Rod behind the bar for fostering such a friendly welcoming community. A cosy, casual, warm vibe in the pub, all packed into a fairly small space. Nice warm fire in winter. Live music twice a week. Open mic and quiz night also feature on the weekly agenda. A rota of cask ales as well as on tap, all at very reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Newport.

T I N Y ! But brilliant. Do not let that picture fool you. This place is really small. And from my experience is always busy. But it's charmingly small. They often have live music and this really adds to the vibe. Lots of Ales as expected. A gem of a place. Dont tell anyone else though.

It's an ale house... The beer is kept well, and there's no TV.

Didn't eat, but a few beers, so frendly, will be back in the summer, give it a look.

Liked the idea of a front room family type experience

This type of pub is usually closed on a Monday, so full marks to the Ale House for being open when I dropped in--though sadly it was bang empty. Even empty, it had atmosphere, because of the quirky decor and clutter that adorns the little room. I drank a couple of the different, interesting ales they keep in sort of leather casks at the back, plus a half a Schwabian Schwarzbier, of all things, from a tap. The young barman was friendly and chatty and made me feel welcome rather than, as is possible in the circumstances, awkward. What a wonderful bar. I will revisit when back on the island, hoping to experience it in full swing.
