Newmachar Fish Bar in Aberdeenshire

I got a fish supper from here last week. The food was really good. The service was good and I would definitely come back again.

Cannot complain about SIZE of portion, However £7:50 for bag of chips and can of coke, Is shocking. Local Chip shop yes need support but how on earth can people keep paying £6:50 for large bag of chips. Didn’t ask if I wanted large just assumed. Team were very bored and couldn’t care less. Shame as chips were ok.

John has a clean run chipper all very tasty every time we go on a Thursday evening for my dad that stays in Newmachar cheers 😁

I came here for a takeaway fish supper on Thursday night around 18:00. The food was really nice - the standard haddock was very tasty and the chips were nice. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the portion of chips was not very big (not sure if this was a one-off or a regular thing). Overall I had a lovely meal and I will definitely come back again soon.

Great chipper! White, black and red puddings, chips all great. Service also very good. So so tempting to pop in every time passing in Newmachar. High recommend, up there with the best in Aberdeenshire for sure although maybe a bit dearer than some.

Bad - Everything was far too salty. The tubs of curry sauce are smaller than you get from other chippers. Good - There was a good menu and drinks selection. Didn’t have to wait long.

Great food and cheaper than other fish bars in Aberdeen / shire. The staff are very friendly and eager to help. The owner is an absolute top lad. The portions you get are huge if you haven’t tried the chicken fillets your certainly missing out no other chipper does chicken fillets like these. The size of the haddock are equivalent to a jumbo anywhere else. I definitely would have no problem telling everyone to go there. Great food and management Very clean and updated

first review was not posted by tripadvisor due to their policy regarding bad reviews, (it seems you can not say what really happened in this chip shop as its against trip advisors rules with individuals ) So on the evening i entered the shop i was shocked with an "individual's" conduct towards customer's my experience was totally unpleasant and walked out of the building , its seems apparent a individuals is "struggling" somewhat and is taking it out on customers

A very bright and modern chipper that is kept very clean! Excellent customer service by staff and amazing food! I always get fish, it’s never too greasy or heavy. The homemade spicy / normal chicken burgers are a must try if you don’t want something with batter on it !!! Always get a home made curry sauce which I got to sample for free before buying it - very generous of the owner and now I buy it every time!!! The food has a high quality standard which remains consistent every visit. It may look expensive but defo worth the money!!! If you have a sweet tooth try the slushes and Battered Mars Bar ! 100% my favourite local chipper !!

First time visiting this chipper, normal go to the Balmedie chipper but we were passing so thought we would try. Ordered three fish suppers & one chicken fillet supper. Everyone was disappointed with their meal. No jumbo haddock available so just standard size. The portion of chips given in all the meals were so stingy. Everyone was disappointed with there meal, could see more of the bottom of the box than food in it. My dad thought it might be under new management.

Food here is always pretty good but full marks must go to the efforts made to keep staff and customers safe during this awful pandemic. From the outset, the owner was ahead of the game, putting up proper tailor made screens to separate staff from customers and installing am intercom and hand sanitising station too. Now that people can’t enter takeaways at all due to Covid restrictions, they’ve got a superb system in place with a counter that fits into the doorway as well as a proper fitted screen that can read cards through the glass for payment. Order at the front and proceed round the back to collect your food. All very safe and contactless, assuming the other customers act like sensible grown ups, wear their masks and keep their distance. Best set up I’ve seen. Well done to all concerned.

Terrible intercom so the staff can’t hear you properly. I repeated my order twice and corrected them once. Ended up with one meal for 3 kids - not impressed.

Bought a macaroni pie supper, unwrapped my food only to discover I had to use a spatula to try and keep the pie together. Pie was tasteless and falling apart, chips were fine. Expensive meal, wil try elsewhere in future

first time visit. I starved myself all day for this takeaway and was not impressed. i had a fish supper and there was hardly any chips at all and the fish was deep fried to a crisp. my son didnt like his chips but ate his chicken nuggets. all was not hot and we didnt travel far! ill be going to Meldrum chipper next time which is my usual and wont be changing again. very disappointed.

We stopped here for supper before heading into Aberdeen to the P&J Live.Had to park down the side street next to the Fish Bar.Walked into a clean looking bar, viewed the menu and thought "this is expensive". We'll give it a go, as you must get a lot for your money then? Wrong!The staff (2 young girls) tried their best when taking orders (looks like not much tuition has been invested in them from the owner when it comes to manner, all very dour/robotic). The owner wandered in and out looking extra dour (may have a lot of stress going on in his life), trying to out stare customers. Mr Welcome, or what!? Not a good attitude.My chicken pie was a greasy/soft and my fish was slightly bigger than an emaciated stickleback! Scabby chips too.I won't be returning to this fish bar until Mr Welcome calls it a day. It's the local Chinese for me.

Love the chicken fillet suppers, regardless of where I have lived around aberdeen I have always gone here for my chipper when I fancy one, even when I lived 13 miles away in Ellon.Ignore the negative comments, this place is superb. If you're expecting fine dining you wouldn't be going to a takeaway chip shop. If you want a chipper, it's a win.

Was charged £8.10 for a fish supper the fish was that small it was looking for its mother. ATTITUDE of the owner was discussing shouting at customers small portions and greasy won't. Be back

Absolutely appalling food. Greasy, tasteless and expensive food served very slowly by teenagers in filthy polo shirts.Owner/fryer “John” wanders about glowering at his staff with one arm covered in batter up to his elbow! He looks like he's been plastering, badly.To top it off he has the social skills of the “Soup Nazi”.His apron is dirtier than a junkies mattress.So bad it would make an onion cry.If you must get a take away in Newmachar go to the Chinese across the road instead or take an extra 10 minutes and drive to SeaSalt & Sole.

Travelling home and thought we would have a chip supper for a change and on seeing the sign outside inviting all in for new tattie chips thought we would give it a go. However wish we had waited and gone to one in Aberdeen. Sorry guys hope it was a bad Sunday but everything was far too greasy and the worst batter we have ever had!!! Chips were OK but both items were swimming in grease which wasn't necessary as the food in hot tray looked so good so hopefully just a bad day at the chippy!

Stopped here as we came near to the end of our journey.The fish and chips were as good as I have ever tasted. The shop was busy but the service was swift and efficient

Appalling attitude from the owner who I don’t think I’ve ever seen smile in my whole 15 years of living here. Chicken is so greasy and tough you can hardly stomach it, chips are soggy and the whole place is way overpriced. Seriously just go to sea, salt and sole in dyce - it’s a million times better in quality and price. Oh the owner closes for multiple weeks on end because he’s on holiday and doesn’t trust any of the staff to run the place.

Been here a few times and have never been disappointed. Big portions!never had to wait too long either.

You want fish and chip go to England. The fish might be landed ok no Peterhead but it's still a poor cousin to the southern stuff.Over priced be small portions,. Average for Aberdeen and shire. Good to see some competition from the Chinese in newmachar. Now you might up your game ! Try a trip to Marie's chippy in widnes. You'll learn a few things and have them queueing out the door.

Popped in for a scampi supper over the weekend - place seemed clean and there was a number of items ready - nice to see scampi cooked fresh.

We had a fish supper and chicken fillets! And it was absolutely delicious!! The fish was lovely! The batter was perfect! And the fish tasted so fresh! And the chicken fillets are the best I have ever had! They are really big, and the batter was to die for! Both just lovely!! The staff where very friendly! And I spoke to the man that I think is the owner! He had a laugh and a joke, and made me feel at home! I would highly recommend going there! We will be going back soon!

Fish supper was edible . Fish slightly overlooked. Very little batter and meat exposed to the oil on the fish and portion of chips was enough to feed an anorexic budgie . £5.40 for half of a fillet of fish and an extra £2 for about a potato chopped into chips . £1 for a can of IRN BRU .

My husband loves chicken fillets so decided to go for the large portion - he couldn't finish it! It is real chicken breasts deep fried, a massive portion even for him but so delicious. I can't see past the haddock & have also had the scampi. To die for! Handy just on the road through Newmachar so easy for a quick stop. They are also very quick at serving too and it is always so fresh.

Had a pit stop here for a late supper with family. I decided to get a white pudding and chicken pie by themselves. A treat for me and understandably not to great for my inners. Top badness. It was excellent placing bits of white pudding onto a chicken pie crust foundation. We sat in the car, watching the world go by, grazing.

Been to the chipper a few time and have never been let down. Have had a variety of items off the menu and all have been excellent! Deep fried mars bar - MUST TRY

Highly recommend the chicken fillets, delicious and crispy batter. Portion of 6 fillets and chips but could easily feed 2 people! I don’t usually like food from most chippers but on the occasions I do, Newmachar fish bar is the place to go. Their chips made with new potatoes are great and the place looks great inside. Only wish they would bring back their curry pies as they were the best!

Stopped here on the way home 1 night . Place was busy which is a good sign . Fish and chips were good with a decent portion . Quite quick as there was a few folk there. Would definitely go back .

Visiting the area and stopped off for fish and chips, the chips were nice but the fish was of poor quality.

Grandes cosas oí acerca de aquí así que paramos en el camino a casa para un juicio. Tengo que decir que me decepcionó un poco en un número de frentes. Sí, las patatas fritas eran sabrosos y la salchicha jumbo que tenía buen sabor, pero eso es en el que terminó en puntos. La pasta estaba pasada, el tamaño de la porción era pequeño en el mejor (odio id para ver lo que una parte de los niños es como) y el precio era sumamente elevado. Recientemente ordenados los mismos elementos de una tienda de chips de Glasgow y recibió la cantidad de patatas fritas agudos y 2 salchichas jumbo para 50 p menos de lo que pagué por mi comida. Como he dicho, la comida estaba bien, pero tienes que ver el tamaño de la porción y costo como el cliente está siendo con pezuñas cada vez.

Quite simply one of the best fish suppers I have ever tasted. The sausage suppers and chicken breast were also of a very high standard.

Terrible ,I had to apologise for being overcharged,i wanted two sausages so got one cut in two and was charged £2.80,and it was battered even though this was not I asked for, by this time I had lost all will,compounded by the older server,who was thoroughly nasty and rude in my opinion,if all of Newmacher was like this,no one would ever return.

I cannot believe all the negative comments that people are posting about the Newmachar Fish Bar as it is the best you will find.

Lovely food, the batter is crispy, the service is quick and they offer coffee. Will definitely be back.

Having come from Devon and moving up to live in Newmachar I was sceptical that nothing would beat a good old fish and chips from Devon, but this does. Everything is cooked from fresh! The fish is great, but Ive slowly been converted to the chicken fillets... for a large youll get about 6 large fresh chicken fillets and a massive portion of chips for under £10, its amazing.Its true, the service isnt great, but as a customer Im going here to get food and nothing else, if I wanted good service Id go and eat in a restaurant - so those comments are strange.The owner is constantly there working aswell which is always great to see.

I am a regular to this chipper who is friendly with good food ethics. Good food and good value for money.

Uneatable chicken fillets,they were awful could not eat them, under cooked and full off grease, the most awful supper ever.

I recently had chicken nuggets from here and am now lying in bed off work sick. When I bit into the last one I realised the middle was pink, making me wonder if the rest were also like this. About a month ago my mum had a fish supper from here and when she bit into one of her chips, she almost broke her tooth as there was a small stone in the middle. That's right a piece of gravel was in her chip. After reading one of the other reviews that says the chips are left out the back I'm not surprised in the slightest. Dodgy owner and dodgy place with rude staff. There was one boy working who seemed like the only one who knew what he was doing. Go somewhere else, it's worth it. Can highly recommend mikes in Inverurie it's the best I've been to.

Usually stick to the fish supper as they are amazing. Friends and family always want a takeaway when they come to visit. Never had a bad supper from here it's always consistent. Love it. Donald

Saturday night treat of chicken fillets with curry sauce and a haddock supper, loads of chips, crispy batter and very moist fish & chicken. A takeaway worth going out for on a cold winter evening.

Love this chippy, never had a bad meal from it, the chicken fillets are great, the staff are friendly, can be a bit of a wait as most things tend to be cooked fresh while you wait.

Consistently good haddock and chips although you are paying Aberdeen prices. Portion size is OK - the boxes that are used for carry out do a first rate job of getting your supper home in premium condition. The staff are good and efficient but I sometimes sense the owner could do with smiling more.

Got to be the best chipper within a fifty mile radius. The chicken fillets are scrumptious and I would highly recommend them

Have written a few reviews on the Newmachar fish bar.We stopped on the way back from Portsoy to Aberdeen and had haddock suppers, chicken fillet suppers and white pudding.Awesome is the best way to describe the quality of the food.The chicken fillets were freshly prepared. Huge fillets in crispy batter and no grease. the chicken was moist and tender and tasted great.As always, the haddock was big (by Aberdeen chippie standards) crispy batter, completely grease free and tasted wonderful.Chips fresh from the fryer and perfect.Well done for the consistent food served. We love our trips to the shop.

If you live in the north of the city or surrounding areas I can't think of a better place to get fish & chips. Takes a while to get served but I for one like that as I know its always fresh. Fish is good quality and batter is delightful. Chips are pretty good too. All in all - worth a shot.

I won't be back. Next time you go, nip round the back. There you'll find your uncooked chips. Out for any bird to poop in, any animal to get into. When it's pointed out to the boss you're treated like rubbish. You're welcome Mr Booth, you horrible man.

Excellent Takeaway, huge portions, and all the usuals done to a high standard. Always good fish and never too greasy.

Haven't been here for year but two hungry bellies brought us in. I plumped for the chicken fillets and my wife had a Mickey Rooney pie. The fillets were enormous and would have fed a whole village. Unusually I couldn't finish them all but the taste was magnificent. I would thoroughly recommend dropping in by for the food but you'll love the service aswell

Bit pricey but very tasty fish and chips, crisp batter and well cooked chips. A little wait but well worth it for fresh cooked fish and chips.

We always stop in past on way back to Aberdeen when we are up north.We have tried them all in Aberdeen and out and about but Newmachar Fish Bar wins hands down every time.In my last review I said some of the younger girls in the shop couldn't break a smile despite me trying hard to break the ice with conversation. Not even a please or thank you. But the service last week by (I think) the same girls was great. There were smiles and a wee bit of conversation, but more importantly I think it was all genuine, not forced. The girl who served me was polite and attentive and I welcome this change.The food....well what can be said. Lovely fresh haddock and light batter and no grease. The chicken fillets were monsters and again not a spot of grease on the crispy batter.Chip - simply awesome.Keep up the good work

brilliant food, service has gotten better now there are different employees, used to get soggy food at times, or the wrong order, but in the last 4-5 months it has gotten a lot better!

We often stop here for a fish supper. The batter on his fish if lovely and crispy and tasty, the fish is beautiful and white and real haddock. The chips are also good. Service from the staff also first class. such a pity he does not have room for a sit down area. Highly recommended

This is not the best meal I have had in a restaurant as it is not a restaurant. Otherwise it was well worth a visit. Great variety of food, fast service, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. Only in the area for three days but had two meals from there as we were so satisfied.

Pretty average and a bit on the greasy side.Could do a lot to improve the quality.Customer experience could be better. They could learn to smile !

Crackin chipper!Never had a bad purchase out of this place yet. batter is beautiful and crispy every time!

On the few occasions that I have gone to the Newmachar Fish bar the food has only been adequate. I always find the chips soggy and if you ask for them to be cooked to become crispy you get told off by the owner! Whatever happened to customer service? The owner needs a course on management and leadership! I would not let my son/daughter work there to be abused by the foul language & poor attitude (although a few of the young staff have foul mouths too!) The owner is hateful, rude and obnoxious. He is teaching the staff who are young and impressionable poor work ethics and values. You walk in, don't have time to look or have a think about what you want, gutter language then when you do order and have special requests you get told off. I won't be spending my money there and wouldn't encourage anyone else to until the service improves.

John workes his chipper very well. Friendly service and fast yet good food. Fish is always cooked with perfect crispy batter and the chips cooked with a nice soft center. Always a tempting choice. Very good pinaple fritters and many great foods for everyone to enjoy. If you fancy a cheeky chippy john can offer you quality chip shop food.

Ordered a white pudding supper about 9 at night on my way home after a 14 hour day, was served up quickly and the usual Salt and vinegar?was asked, before I could reply, vinegar only, it was covered in salt .. oops.. chips immedatly thrown back into fryer and then dished up again served with vinegar this time, but the already applied salt was still there, however too tired to protest I went on my merry way so proceeding to eat my slightly salty chips whilst driving then bit into the white pudding to discover it was a red pudding, not a happy bunny now. Dog was pleased enough with it though

We always stop off at the chipper on our return journeys back to Aberdeen and this last trip was no exception.  Haddock suppers, chicken fillet supers and even a deep fried Mars bar for the first time.  Food was excellent as always.Probably one of the best chippers in the North East for consistent quality of fish. The girls behind the counter need some customer relation training as they are more concerned about their own conversations than that of the paying customers needs. A smile now and then goes a long way

John can be tuff as a boss. But there is no doubt the food and the quality of the food is excellent. We have experienced this many times and would advise anyone to give it a try.

I have been going to John's every Friday for years and never had bad food ever. The staff are young but all pleasant.John's son has also worked in the shop and is a 'chip' off the old block. I think all the negative reviews are a touch of green eyed monster.

all of this rubbish about bad language and stuff is no true! i used to go to the chipper every friday with my mates because the food was so good so be quiet about the bad language and stuff and just enjoy the food. oh and john actually is quite nice and its no his fault that he has young people working there, the kids just want some cash for fun... he also takes care of his son and his son likes working with him...FYI i would recommend the jumbo sausage supper! Delicious! :-)

The food in this chip shop isn't the problem .... However, as with previous reviewers, I am continually appalled by the filthy language and poor attitude I have to endure while waiting for the food to be made.Now I'm not easily offended, but the language I've witnessed being used by both the owner and at least one of the young female assistants has been downright rank . For crying out loud, they're working in village chippy not on a Buckie trawler ! The fact that none of the customers looks remotely amused by their outpourings doesn't seem to faze them at all and it makes no difference whether children are present or not. Personally, I've had enough of it and won't be using this place any more. If you fancy a good takeaway without the inevitable assault on your ears, I recommend the Spice Cottage a little further along the road at Oldmeldrum.

The food is always good but we have witnessed some embarrasing behaviour from the management shouting at staff to poor staff attitudes. Its a shame. Hopefully they will take note.

Went in the other evening and was disgusted at the language and attitude of staff !! There was children in the shop when I over heard one of the girls say she was f****** P*****d off at another member of staff and couldn't be f****** a@@ed !! The attitude of another girl serving was just as bad ,,rude and abrupt !! To top it off the food was just as bad .. Couldn't even eat the chicken fillets they had to be binned due to being rock hard , they would of put a dent into the wall .. And the chips were cold.. My husband bit into a pie and nearly was sick with the amount of fat and glut present with limited amount of meat present...Would avoid this place like the plague , surely gone down hill since the last time I have been !! Feel physically sick after this experience ! Defo not to be repeated ....

Food not bad - soon as you enter ( chipper) seems to be a mad rush - never got time to read menu board . Ordered - money snatched out of hand - soon as suppers were ready , asked for a bag assistant threw them in ( she wasn't happy) - staff need customer training ??? Would be a big advantage - if pleasant & a smile

Fish and chips in the North East can be very hit and miss - but this is a hit and should not be missed! - oil frying smells clean, food is cooked to order, never had a bad batch of chips even if last thing at night. Suppers are good and fish seems fresh. batter is just right, noy over cooked but light and crispy. Definitely try them out.

Another great fish supper n haggis supper from John at newmachar chipper. Every time we are oor by we go to John for our supper. Great food and nae Lang to wait . Fine to see and taste the real north east fish n chips + plus his famous haggis supper . Cheers to all involved
