Gorgeous little coffee shop right near the Shambles Market, and the perfect place to escape a cold York afternoon and warm yourself with a hot beverage. The Bailey's hot chocolate really hit the spot, and my partner really enjoyed his bacon and brie toastie. The vibe is cosy and perfect for parties of 2, but seating is limited at lunchtime, especially for parties any larger than 4. Many parties of 3 or more were getting turned away or split over multiple tables.

A nice place located by the markets and the shambles. I had a cheese and ham croissant which was very good, and my partner had a bacon and egg McMuffin which was okay. The service was good and the staff were friendly.the downstairs is quite crammed in, can’t comment on the upstairs part. The price was a tad expensive for what we got but it was expected with the location.

Very disappointing experience. We had walked passed here one evening and seen vegan hazelnut pan au chocolate in the window which I wanted to try. We purposefully went back the next day to find it. Upon entering we were asked if we wanted a table for two and said we’d just like a couple of pastries to take away. We were told they were too busy to deal with takeaway customers. Staff were quite rude and dismissive. Definitely avoid.

Visited with a friend midweek. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Service was good overall. Unfortunately, the general look of the place is dark and grubby. The space is very cramped and the seating was very uncomfortable. The food (bacon butties) wasn’t great really - cotton wool bread and not much filling. The stairs are not easily navigated to get to the toilets. I doubt I’ll return despite being local. It’s a shame really as the staff are lovely.

As a regular visitor to York I have my favourite cafes, but today I decided to try somewhere different: The Newgate Coffee Bar which is along one edge of the Market. It has lots to recommend it: quirky decor, low beamed ceilings and a good menu choice-that said, I think that it perhaps appeals to a tourist market, or those looking for somewhere relaxed. It’s the complete opposite to cafes such as Cafe Nero or similar - sitting working on a laptop is a no, no! I think this is absolutely right for this cafe; it has a cosy vibe for a more leisurely coffee or meal. I sat at a corner table which gave me a great view of the outside seating area complete with table tennis table whilst I watched birds using the feeders in the tree nearby. The toilet facilities and more seating are on the first floor via a rather steep staircase decorated with items for sale:Green Man wares, framed photography etc Card payment only and also dog friendly.

Very good coffee, excellent sandwiches and cakes. Quirky decor - there's a skeleton outside the toilets upstairs. Smiley, friendly staff. Pick a table and then place and pay for your order at the counter. Your food and drink will be delivered to your table. It doesn't appear to be able to cater for wheel chair users as the floor is on different levels and the toilets are small and accessed by very old uneven stairs - York's old buildings have real character, but sadly aren't always easily modified to accommodate everyone. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a light lunch, snack or just a tea or coffee with a slice of cake.

Not the best experience, asked if there was a substitute for the bacon as partner is vegetarian and he said Ham?... Partner said doesn't matter and will give her partner. Food arrived and the sourdough was dry and hard when cutting through it. Bacon on partner's avocado on sourdough was replaced with tomato and pepper in a small pot. If you didn't understand the first time and tried to rectify by providing an alternative when the customer wasn't there, at least ask them first if substituting an item! Any breakfast item is supposed to come with a standard tea and coffee.. partner wasn't asked and so went without a drink. Won't be back.

Ordered a quiche with a tea, and a chicken & bacon toastie.with a latte. £27. Both meals arrived and we were immediately disappointed. The toastie was sitting alone on the plate with some chips, looking like a low rent motorway services offering. Both were overcooked and tough! So tough that I couldn’t use the knife and fork. The quiche at least had a side salad, which unfortunately was just a pile of dry spinach leaves with no dressing. My partner wasn’t tempted. We were both VERY disappointed, as being local we know there is much better food available nearby at similar prices.

After about twenty minutes drinks arrived . Told scones coming…Again had to go down stairs and ask where they were. Eventually arrived… said it was staffing problem in kitchen!! Drink and scones were okay. But wait at a not busy time unacceptable. Yep drinks made front of house. Two scones on a plate , with pot of butter and pot of jam!! Coffee lovely, and much needed. Staff very pleasant, we arrived and were told to take a seat and pop back to order at the counter when we were ready then they bring the food. It's clean, dog friendly, can see it being a really nice place to relax for a brew and a treat mid-morning or afternoon as well. It was also one of the cheapest meals we had our whole trip to York. Gorgeous little place that we stumbled upon trying to find a nice spot for a cup of tea that was dog friendly why our 1 year old daughter slept in her pram. Staff were extremely happy, friendly and helpful and made our visit feel special. For such a small place the space is managed very well and it housed a lot of people with different accents including French, American, Spanish and Scottish which our daughter was amazed by once she’d woke. The teas and coffees were lovely, and so were the English Scones which our daughter stuffed her face with and got covered with jam! Very pleasant atmosphere and staff so helpful. Had a lovely coffee and scone, delicious 😋 However ....... While surcharges are ultimately an independent decision, consumers increasingly expect coffee shops to swallow the extra cost of vegan options. This means that if the bulk of your customers are looking for non-dairy milks, adding an extra fee could start to be seen as a deterrent.

Not that much of a fan...place looked really cute on the inside, staff is also nice. Only downstairs you can sit way nicer than upstairs. When we ordered the drinks and food, which were on the pricy side, we expected some good stuff. Only the coffee was really watery and the milk not even foamed well. I've been to lots of places for coffee already, and they've always been good, but this one I could've made myself at home, it tasted like soluble coffee. Anyways, the food, it said pancakes with fruit. We thought the price was fine, but we only got one not that big pancake with a bit of fruit, that was a little disappointing...I don't want to drag them down, but if the prices are higher, you'd expect better. Alas, this wasn't the case...otherwise I could've payed less and get the same in a cheaper place. The girls were amazing though! Nothing wrong with the service.
