The food is good here and it is a reliable local spot for brunch/lunch. Just visited but complained when we were served our smoothies in small, part-ful takeaway cups instead of a brimful large glass as usual. Both staff shrugged and one said "it's been like that for a year", while the other "we've lost a lot of glasses and that's how the boss serves it now". I get it, times are tough for small businesses but making the portions smaller and denying it is a bad look.

Never had a bad experience here after visiting for many years. The food is always exceptional and they execute their small menu very well. Food is uncomplicated and tasty with friendly service from the staff. Well worth a visit to any of their locations for a soup, sandwich, coffee, roll, wrap, or cake! The club sandwich is a personal favourite of mine!

The New Town Deli has a large outdoor seating area positioned on a wide paved corner which allows customers to bask in the sunshine in a chilled and spacious environment. We ordered flatbread with falafel/hummus/roast peppers/cholula and breakfast burrito chorizo/scrambled eggs/mull cheddar/jalapeno/spinach. The burrito came, not as a flour tortilla, but as a dish served on another flatbread. Overall, the dishes were quite enjoyable. The base sauces lifted the dishes and the salads contained good flavours and textures. The flatbreads were hard to cut; non-sharp knives or rubbery flatbread? The falafel was a bit too greasy. The table tops were wooden strips with large gaps which meant any dropped food {which in our case is usually plentiful} goes straight down to the pavement along with your cutlery if you are not too careful. We ordered 2 flat whites which came with some fun Halloween theme froth and we had a peanut nut blondie. We would reorder the flat whites but the blondie; probably not. It tried to be too many things and missed out on the gooey texture and peanut butter flavour. Would we go again; yes. The savoury dishes offered some interesting combinations, the coffees were consistent and good, and there was a large enough choice of cakes for us to try another one.

I used to live above this shop and was a very frequent customer several years ago. Went in today to experience really sub par food on offer. Had the avocado toast with bacon and eggs. The toast was not toasted, and the bacon and eggs were both overcooked. The food was on par with a roll van next to a construction site. Nothing wrong with that mind you but the van doesn't charge a tenner. It used to be the case that you'd wait quite a while for food here but the food was always excellent but I can't help but feel that churn is now being prioritised over quality. From them no longer offering poached eggs (seriously, whats that about?), to overcooked food coming out of the kitchen alarmingly quickly it feels like there's a factory line rather than care and attention from a competent chef. The coffee is still good so there's a plus I guess, but I still won't be back. P.s before anyone responds with, why didnt you day anything, I sat with my cutlery across my near enough full plate while noone come to check. I then cleared my own table. Make of that what you will.

Visited for breakfast a couple of times on a recent visit to Edinburgh/Stockbridge. We were looking for a fairly simple breakfast to counter some of the more fancy brunch options on offer in the area and enjoyed the dough dough toast with scrambled eggs. Not been back to New Town Deli for a dew years now ever since moving away from the area for work. Used to frequently pop in for breakfast or lunch at least once or twice a week. Popped in with my family to order takeout. Was a shame that the menu was greatly reduced compared to what it was. Went in and approached the counter to order, we all had to have a look at the menu as choice wasn't as much as we'd expected. Was abruptly asked to wait outside whilst we looked at the menu. I appreciate we were still social distancing etc but there wasn't any other customers behind us so we did not make a fuss and obliged as requested. Ordered food and advised we'd be back in 15 minutes to collect, saying this we thought it indicated that we were not sitting in and rather "taking away". On our return I asked whether our order was ready for collection but was advised we never confirmed we were taking away. Bit of confusion then as we were never asked where we were sitting but also i guess in hindsight we never confirmed. Anyway, our food was out into takeout containers. We had them had them at home. My son had a breakfast roll, sausage and egg I think it was, big standard, hard to get wrong, no problems there. My wife had the egg on avocado sour dough bread. Again simple and hard to get wrong. My daughter and I both had the club sandwich, mine was as it comes, my daughters was with ketchup instead. For both of us it was very difficult to eat, the filling was very mushy and wet, very salty too a bit too salty for my liking. Fries on the side were fine. Would we go back? Not deliberately, would maybe give the one on Broughton Street a try first so that we could compare the difference in terms of service level and food quality.

We visited here after running the half marathon. We wanted a healthy-ish lunch with plenty of choice for a meat eater and a non meat and bread eater, and this is what we got. There was a good selection on the menu for both of us. I opted for a salad box and was given a choice of two sizes. The base of the salad is standard then you can add your own selection of toppings/extras. My hubby had a toasted bagel with chicken and avocado which looked lovely and he enjoyed it. Our only criticisms are that the cafe was very warm (we ate in and it was at an uncomfortable temperature) and the staff weren't overly friendly. I am also personally put off by cakes and bread which are on the counter/side and uncovered....but maybe that's just me. Overall a lovely place for lunch which I would recommend.

Complained once and got some random reason about needing to pay for hiring the card machine or something . The cafe owner has two branches - I'm sure he/she can afford to rent the device without hitting the customers an extra 50p for that.Echoing what another customer reviewed - don't be stingy.I'm less inclined to go here now just down to principal . Nothing wrong with the food and drinks on offer here, the only down side is the staff and the speed that coffees are prepared. They have had friendly staff over the last 6 months I've been coming here for my breakfast hit, but in recent weeks they seem to have recruited a number of young 'uns that are not very "customer focused" and seem lacking in social graces (eye contact, a smile, etc). The second issue of the glacial pace in which coffees are delivered could be down to the equipment installed, but the staff are often disorganised in capturing the order and then delivering it correctly (ordered a small black and a large white this morning - received a large black and a large white instead after 10 mins waiting).I'll keep coming here for now, as the wait isn't so bad, but if the owners read this I hope they pay a little attention to their front of house.

Let me share a secret with you- I visit Edinburgh to place flowers in the grave of my late partner. The best florists in town is Narcissus in Broughton Street- and this deli is just over the road. It serves American style sandwiches- I had pastrami/dill pickle/mustard on white- and I pop in when returning from the cemetery. It provides damn good inventive food in a small space- room for six to eat in at the most; and good sundries such as artisan crisps and good coffee. No alcohol though and no hot food after breakfast, but for a 'New York style' deli in the heart of Edinburgh, it does a treat. Much much recommended.

I come here often for lunch because I work close by and there are aspects about this cafe I like very much: Fresh variety of rolls which you can select yourself, good selection of gormet ingredients for rolls/wraps compared to other nearby offerings and seating available if one wishes to sit in and get away from the office (good music too). There are however some aspects which are frustrating me and must be improved upon if I am to continue to give this place my custom: The servers are stingy with the ingredients...they have obviously been told to put the minimum amount of everything into your roll or wrap. If I get my wrap toasted it is flattened to nothing and can be finished in record time and leaves me hungry! At £4 each I think this is pretty poor when I could get something around the corner for £2.50 every day. I'm not asking for overloaded rolls, just a normal amount of fillings. Sometimes I get a brown roll with ham cheese and pickle and they have put literally one layer ham on it, I don't want to have to ask for an extra slice of ham every time I order my lunch! I'm willing to pay the extra for my favourite roll and gourmet ingredients but I don't want to be left hungry and unsatisfied. Come on Mr Manager, stop telling your staff to be stingy please :) !!

I got a delicious falafel pita, which was much bigger than I had expected, and was well worth the 6 quid it cost. The ordering /paying process didn't seem to make much sense and I'm sure they lose plenty because of it. If I hadn't asked if I could pay I could have been out the door with a free lunch. The prices may seem a bit expensive but the size of the portion I got was well worth it. Dropped in on Sunday for a quick brunch with some friends. The veggie and mozzarella wrap was nice - although the mix of roasted vegetables was a little weird (carrot, pepper and butternut squash) and the pesto overpowering. The brie, tomato and dijon sandwich was horrible - so much mustard you couldn't taste anything else and mixed in with the tomato so you couldn't scrape it off. Poached eggs and toast was fine. The coffee was the only highlight - a lovely brew. Overall nothing special and a little overpriced. The service was prompt and friendly and the room has a nice social vibe. I love the New Town Deli most at about 8.15am each morning. The all day breakfast roll is top- notch. Good cappuccino and coffee and in the winter months the to views and soups aware great. Free opines of the guardian to read whilst you wait or eat mean that you keep up to date with liberal views.

The Holiday inn charge £13 a head for breakfast, so every time we stay in edinburgh we opt to breakfast at the New Town Deli. Great bacon sandwich, fab coffee, lovely fresh smoothies and all for half the price of the HI !The staff are always under pressure and it is a bit chaotic, and you can queue - just chill, read the paper and watch it all happen!

Stumbled across this place a few months back and been a few times. The good really is great, lots of choice, would agree that the menu is a bit confusing! The service is where it falls down, chaos at the counter!

We came here after the place we had originally planned to breakfast at didn't open until 10am (despite their website saying 9am). It looks nice as you walk in, very hipster, if a little sparse in the chiller cabinets. Both members of staff looked up at us but not a smile from either of them, things felt very awkward. We all ordered from their patisserie collection - my croissant was on the large side but not warm and tasted okay. I still ate it all. The menu is written on a lege chalkboard behind the counter and it wasn't until another customer ordered a bacon roll that I realised they even did hot breakfast food. Gutted! The coffee is good if you're a coffee lover, it was a little on the strong side for me...but then I rarely drink it nor do I appreciate the good stuff.Unfortunately they forgot to make my boyfriends smoothie which we had to ask for. When it did arrive it was very tasty. All in all, a little hit and miss. I wouldn't begrudge a return but would probably order something else.

We found by this place accident when we got lost! But what a find, all sandwiches etc made to order, very good coffee and the little outdoor seating area is very pleasant. Only minor grumble is the menu is hand wriiten on a big board behind the counter and was a bit confusing.

Uptown girl, that's how I feel when lunching at New Town Deli - it's more upmarket than your traditional sandwich shop... but oh, so much more tasty! Food is delicious, they obviously use high quality ingredients, and wide selection of goodies. Their smoothies are really good - though not at Hula's level...What I like about this wee spot is how bright it is, if there is 1 thing I love it's light (probably because Scotland is so dark a lot of the time!) - nice big windows, and a really cool big wooden table in the middle so you can lunch & make friends! Outdoor seating for those days when the sun is out. Always playing good music, and today seeing as it is Friday they have it nice and loud... (but not too loud for those more sensitive eardrums)Def worth checking out if you are after a quick bite, bit too cramped if you are wanting a more leisurely sunday brunch.

Booked for lunch declared ,shellfish allergy, was told. That they could not guarantee cross contamination asked how serious the allergy was ,I have an episode pen. Was told that someone should have contacted me about it ,they did not, waste of a journey and paying for parking. Will not be back. If you have any allergies avoid this place.

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.

Went with family to have a nice breakfast but were all utterly disappointed. Very small selection of breakfast items and all potions were far too small. I ordered full Scottish breakfast but left feeling hungry after spending over £1, sausages both meat and vegan were very nasty in their taste and all items were below average for an premium price - never again.

We ate here before the Lion King with the VIP Ambassador Lounge deal and it was all very good . I had read some of the negative reviews and was a bit wary after booking but it was a really nice experience. The food was fine , we had chicken skewers and soup and burgers and there was no complaints , but the service was excellent . The girls who served us were efficient and very friendly. They took us up to the lounge and again we had friendly service . All made for a great night , well done
