New River Chinese Take Away in Monmouthshire

Terrible service, then a mix up that then lead to a further 20 min wait and cold food! Won't be back

We have been regularly ordering from this takeaway for a while now, we’ve never had any issues the food has all ways been hot and tasty and delivery drivers have always been pretty efficient for your standard takeaway. However our most recent order has been a complete anomaly. We ordered at around 7:30pm and waited patiently as it was a Friday night and assumed they would be quite busy. When we next checked the time it had been over 3 hours since we placed our order and nothing had arrived by then it was only a few minutes from their closing time and decided to not bother calling and attempt to get a refund. It was disappointing seems as we’ve never had a bad experience and have always enjoyed the food they send out…

Ordered 5 different meals and they were all very good. Loved the salt and pepper chips. Would definitely order from here again.

Absolutely awful. The order took 1.5 hours to get to Undy which would have been ok if it was worth waiting for. Sadly, both meals were awful with poor quality meat, terrible egg fried rice and very poor pancake rolls. Will never order from them again.

We’ve been using this take away since they opened and today has been the worse experience we’ve ever had, when ordering we tried to order online like we always do but it wouldn’t let us change the address so we had to phone the order through to then be told it’s cash only that way which was annoying but fine. We ordered at 5pm when they opened and was told it would be with us for 6pm as the driver didn’t start until 5:30?! So why open at 5?! Anyway.. it’s now it’s 6:30, we’ve called twice to see where the order is and we’ve been told twice that he’s on his way, bearing in mind we live 10 minutes away if that?! We called at 6:15 and again at 6:30 and still no sign!!! It’s safe to say we won’t be using this take away again!! Very disappointed!!

Wish we’d stuck to soup at home but decided to try a Chinese as the River’s did Hong Kong style chicken!

Delivery is useless,this is the second time we have waited nearly 2 hours for food....there won't be a third

Absolutely appalling service & food..... we usually use another local take away and was recommended New River...... we haven’t had a take away for months and months, we decided to celebrate a special occasion. We waited 2 1/2 hours for the delivery of freezing cold inedible food. We contacted the shop for our refund to learn we have to wait next week...... I wish there was an option of a zero score. They even said make sure you return the free prawn crackers.....

The Chicken Chow Mein was wet, slimy and the chicken didn't taste like real chicken. It was something else and tasted old. The rest of the food was poor too. The delivery took an hour and 15 mins to get here. Never again! Go to Wok U Like instead!

My partner and I popped by on the way to our bus stop; we weren't sure we'd have time before the last bus so asked how long it may be (We would understand if it wasn't quick enough for our bus). Staff were very friendly, polite and and the wait time was incredibly short. The food tastes amazing. I've eaten from may Chinese takeouts and this is in my top tier. You also get a lot for what you pay.

Normally I have very good food and service from here, and the prices are generally reasonable, however 1 hour 20 minutes to be delivered when the timer stated 45 minutes, also they advertise as free delivery on their website to anywhere less than 1 mile from them, I live 0.8 miles away an received a £1.60 delivery charge in addition to a 50p service charge. After waiting so long for my food it was cold and soggy (where the condensation had saturated the bags) and the pork balls were so tough I could have built a wall with them. so very disappointed.

Fantastic food, very clean shop, friendly staff and excellent delivery service well within time stated. Won't go anywhere else.

The service is always quick and they will always adapt a dish if you want and the shop is very clean and tidy and always good to go this time of year as you get a calendar for next year which was a nice surprise.

Good food fast service always helpful. Parking bit of a pain is only problem, but service quick so I just park on road outside x x

The women who takes the calls is Arrogant and rude. She really needs to be sacked. How can you be so rude to the companies customers and expect them to return?

We've eaten from here many times. Great food. Great prices. Quick delivery times too. Highly recommended.

We have ordered from here a few times now and have enjoyed each time. They have a wide variety of dishes available. They seem to use proper meat too, not that fake rubbery stuff that a lot of other Chinese takeaways use. They have never gotten an order wrong and they are cheaper than the other Chinese places in the area. Delivery is generally swift.My only gripe is that their hot and sour soup is more sweet and sour. It's still tasty though and you get a lot for your money.

Nothing to rave about, standard run of the mill take away with no frills staff and service. Ordered a box meal and drink, served the main purpose of filling us up in a hurry but didn't really sintilate the taste buds.

This is a takeaway who means Business! Call or drop in, you’ll be dealt with a professional. No matter what your order, it will be ready in 25mins. Food is excellent, fresh, prep’d and cooked, on time, every time. 5 stars!!

My son always go to new river chinese take away he will not go anywhere else and new river chinese take away are best food in caldicot if my son has he way he will chinese food all the time

Turned up on a Saturday night and ordered chilli beef, satay chicken, plain chow min and egg fried rice. Understanding that they were busy was advised it would be 20 minutes so went for a drink. Came back 20 minutes later and then had to wait a further 40. What adds insult to injury was my wife and I witnessed a chap and his son come in order a meal and had it 20 mins before ours. When questioned the woman behind the desk said it was due to the difficulty in preparing our order as it was not straightforward!! When unwrapped the satay was stone cold as was the rice. Needless to say we won’t be going there again. Service was terrible

Lovely people, lovely food a pleasure to deal with. Better than all other local competition. Heats up well the next day too....

Got a delivery. Turned up and missing one rice and curry sauce was everywhere with two massive holes in side of carton. Rang them to explain & they now apparently have no driver and can't do anything about it. £23 down the drain. Chips were over cooked so needed some sort of sauce. Just awful service. Shame new garden was closed. Best around

Used the New River takeaway several times and this my first review. Found delivery time very prompt. I told to expect food within an hour but it arrived 15 mins after ordering! Delivery person polite and friendly. Food was hot, good quality and very tasty. Very impressed and I shall continue to use New River as this is the first Chinese that consistently provides great service....

Really tasty food. We used to drive and collect our Take Aways, but since having them delivered by a really lovely couple, we will have them delivered from now on. The guy is called James, and so efficient and polite!! Food fresh and hot. A credit to the business.

Ordered spare ribs salt and pepper which tested like some other kind of meat not pork. Horrible which put us off on eating beef fried rice and special fried rice. We also ordered king prawn fired rice and mixed vegetables in black bean sauce which was not the best but edible

Would never go anywhere else after being tipped off that this new takeaway was open. Try it - you won't be disappointed.

Used this take away for the first time yesterday and it will be the last! It arrived very quickly and well within the time stated and the food was hot but from there it goes downhill. Everything was swimming in oil. I have never seen bright yellow bean sprouts before. It was tasteless! Close your eyes and you couldn't tell the dishes apart. Threw most of it away. God only knows where the yellow colour comes from!!

Have Chinese most Saturday's and we have never had a bad one yet .A wide menu at very reasonable prices.

Have been using this take away now for several weeks and find the food to be delicious. We always use the delivery service when food arrives it is always hot. Although they do charge for service which is out of keeping with other delivery services in the area.

After moving here 5+ years ago I had given up on finding a decent Chinese takeaway within a 10 mile radius. We've tried others, but too much MSG = upset tummies!! On the recommendation of a friend we order3ed the set menu for 3 (£25) and it fed 5!! pancake rolls weren't dripping in fat, King prawns in satay sauce were bursting with prawns (not the usual 3 or 4) and the crispy shredded beef was superb. We will definitely be ordering again.
