The Red Lantern in Monmouthshire

We visit The Red Lantern a couple of times a week, the food and service are both first class. Have tried various dishes, all have been recommendable , always made to feel very welcome when we visit. 10/10

The food is brilliant and service is very quick, it's just a shame that the restaurant itself is a bit depressing - could use a bit of a refresh.

Very overpriced food and not good quality I had a beef curry beef was chewy no mushrooms I also ordered for my wife and daughter who had chicken balls chips and curry sauce Small portions and very overpriced

Such a heartwarming dinner. We had wonton soup and crab & corn soup as starters, and shared yang chow fried rice and roast duck cantonese style. Forgot to take pictures of the mains as we went straight in. Both are delish!! And they served it on top of warmer tray with candles inside so the food stays warm, very nice touch!! Brilliant!

Regularly come here when in Chepstow. Highly recommend. Food is brilliant and always served quickly, hot and fresh. Staff extremely welcoming and friendly. Will definitely be back when next down

Food can be hit and miss, have only eaten in the restaurant once as found the experience depressing, dirty windowsill, paint peeling from damp wall, piles of chairs under dust sheets and depressing staff.

Super service. Felt like a VIP. Lovely gentlemen waiter, couldn't do enough for me. It's cold out but the restaurant was lovely and warm. Wine delicious, food quality over quantity. Would not hesitate to cone back here and therefore would highly recommend

Staff were okay, no complaints. Food was a let down, my partner got food poisoning from the shrimp being undercooked. The rest of the food we had was less than average. The curry sauce was pretty nice but that was it.

I have no idea why this restaurant isn't packed whenever I go. There is so much choice on the menu, the food is incredible and the service is fantastic. It's spotless. Okay, it isn't fancy, but I'm more interested in the quality of the food than bling.

The food and service are great here!! We always get our takeaway Chinese from here. The restaurant itself is tucked away, so it is a bit hard to find and is very outdated. There is no parking by the restaurant, but there is paid parking close by.

I only noticed as I was leaving that the restaurant only has a 2 star health sticker!! The food was good and the service good but until the scores on the door are higher I will not be visiting again.

I was quite disappointed the other night after looking forward to what is usually a really delicious takeaway. The vegetarian mixed starter was great just to be let down by the egg fried rice - grains were hard - and the vegetable satay on skewers - the satay sauce was thick and congealed like it had been frozen and not mixed properly once defrosted. At nearly £20 all in, it was sad as I've usually no complaints. The staff are really nice and I hope this review is taken as intended, constructive and helpful. Cheers. 🙂

Hand on heart the best Chinese food we've had in a while! We stopped off here on an early Friday evening, whilst taking my son to a scouts camp in Tintern, I'm so glad we did, as we've found a Gem! Every dish served was hot, fresh and flavoured really well. The portion sizes are perfect for sharing as well as for one person. The staff are very friendly and give you great customer service and make sure everything is to your satisfaction. We've since been back the past 2 Fridays, (driven over from Bristol specifically) and they are definitely CONSISTENT with their good food and friendliness. We've since tried different dishes and haven't had a bad one yet. We will without a doubt continue to come to The Red Lantern!

Had a lovely buffet lunch. Loads of really tasty food. It’s my third visit and will definitely return. Even bough a bag of pickled ginger off them. Highly recommended

Really, really good. Yeah, we were all pretty hungry when we arrived, and I'm sure that made the food taste extra delicious, but the truth is that their food is delicious to begin with. Fresh ingredients, skillfully prepared, perfect flavor combinations, reasonable pricing, the license--what's not to love?!? The staff is helpful and accommodating while the restaurant has a nice, quiet yet family-friendly sit-down environment. Great experience at the Red Lantern. Give them a visit!

Very impressive food from a small business. High quality and extremely delicious. Whether you choose to eat in or take out the food holds up their standard.

I just decided to pop in here to get some quick food to go for my partner and we were definitely not disappointed with their Takeaway dishes. Their duck and beef chow mein were incredible and were very generous portions. 10/10 would recommend a visit to this place. Thoroughly well cooked and tasty food.

2.20hrs we waited for food, was told an 1.10hrs.I personally think the the food failed to hit the mark. RL used to be the best in town, really disappointed with the order tonight.

Disgusting service and staff that clearly don’t care, ordered food that never come, when I tried to discuss this I got hung up on, I called back to be hung up on again: thought I would try again and support local business even after previous terrible service but I can assure I won’t be trying again!! Great food, good service, what's not to like

Absolutely love this place. Even when they are really busy the food is of the best quality and they are always apologetic if they are running late. They run a very busy restaurant and takeaway service so I never mind waiting for my order. The satay tofu is amazing and thoroughly recommended everything we have had here in the past.

Impromptu visit on a very busy Saturday night. Table for two, great wine, fantastic food, wonderful service. Would highly recommend .

Table of 5 including a 4 year old. Food was lovely, service was a bit slow, but was so tasty. Prices were £15.99 for adults and £7.99 for children under 9 for the all you can eat. We were charged £7.99 for our 4 year old even though she only ate some chips which I thought was a little expensive for chips! Overall the food was very nice. It did take ages to be served drinks, and the overall meal could have taken less time if the service was quicker. Staff were very polite though, not like in some of the reviews I had read beforehand.

We were going to a concert and needed a meal afterward - short notice on a Saturday night. The Red Lantern agreed our booking and were courteous, helpful, clean and efficient. They looked after the five of us and served us lots of very tasty food. One of us felt the scallops could have been cooked differently - but the overall dining experience was excellent. Cost was average for a decent sit down meal for five. I'd happily go back.

Awful customer service and disgusting behaviour/attitude towards us from the manager (presumably). He had no manners and was extremely rude to us.

The food is generally good but the restaurant is understaffed so service will always be poor. We told the staff this on our last visit and they have responded by increasing their prices and reducing their buffet options. As they don’t value our custom, they have now lost it

I've been using the red lantern for years now and it's always been amazing food & service....until now!! A group of 10 family members booked in for the 'all you can eat buffet'

Went with friends having had a recommendation from a family member, although we used to visit years ago had not been for a very long time. Tried yesterday and was pleasantly surprised as the food was so tasty, service was a little slow, but we were told that this would be the case as they were full, also beer reasonably prices at £3.50 a pint.

A really good meal with plenty to choose from. Often go there with family and we all feel that it is value for money. The staff are always friendly and polite.

With my love of Chinese food, whenever I am in a new town I look for a good one. In Chepstow I was not disappointed. The Red Lantern, in Bank Street, is relatively small and when we went we found that the place was full on a Sunday evening and it would have been much better had we made an advance booking. The Manager explained that there would be a delay; however we were taken to a table, served our drinks and Prawn crackers. The reason for the delay was readily apparent with a group occupying almost the whole room of the main dining area with about 25 people. They had already ordered and we would just have to wait. I am very glad we did, as when the food arrived we had 5 dishes and a rice dish for the three of us and all were very good. The menu is large and various with set menus for 2, 3 or more people, plus an extended a la carte to choose from. I shall not try and say which was the best but all we had was better than the average, and for a full menu there is a site on Google, not from Red Lantern, as I was unable to find one. However if you search enough, and it took me quite a while to find, there is one giving the full menu, very interesting. They also offer on Friday and Sunday evenings, all you can eat at a set price, if you book in advance.

The owner or manager needs to take a course in hospitality. Restaurant is empty (completely empty) and I was told he was fully booked in the most impolite manner.

We have visited the red Lantern many times and have never been disappointed. The variety of food on offer is fascinating and the quality is top rate. The staff are unfailingly helpful and good humoured. The food is freshly prepared and there is no long periods of waiting for it to arrive. We thoroughly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

We come here often... Buffet nights and takeaways .... My daughter decided she wanted her bday meal here.... We booked for 6 and a baby turned up with 7 and two babies... We were sat down and nothing was too much trouble ... Lovely food lovely service... Didn't eat everything so containers were provided ... One of my fave chineses!!!

Have been coming here for both sit down and take away meals for many years. The food is good and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic hot fresh food, lovely waitress called Fran, all perfect as per usual ⭐️ Arrived a little late,8 pm table was shown to our table straight away and was not rushed and didn't leave till just after 11 pm

The Friday and Sunday evening "all you can eat" deal is excellent value for money. I always book this restaurant for my friends between Christmas and New Year. The food is always lovely and the service friendly, but unobtrusive. I would highly recommend this for either takeaway or sit in meals.

Took the misses there as she was moaning she was hungry . Wanted to book in for 7 . But was recommended to come a bit earlier as they had a big party booked in 7ish . And they didn't want to us waiting a long time . We stuffed ourselves silly . And had various dishes that were all good . Think their chopsticks are broken though as they wouldn't work for me !! Would go back again if I'm in the area .

Carol and I love Chinese cuisine. We had a super eat as much as you like meal last month at the Red Lantern. The prawn dishes were exceptionally good especially the sweet and sour prawns.....mmmmm yummy. We have since also had home delivery of their meals.

Food was terrible. Probably one of the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The Chow Mein was a disgrace, literally Noodles with plain chicken sitting on top. Egg Fried rice was over cooked and mushy. Was disgusting. I would advice to never order from here. The Staff were also rude and took 10 them 10 mins to give me my food which was just sitting under the counter in a box.

After seeking the menu online we ordered food over the phone. Once the food arrived we were charged £8 more than the cost online. When I called to query this I was met with a very rude and arrogant attitude, they acknowledged that the website was out of date and incorrect but told me that it was valentines so they suggest that we get over it and make the most of valentines. When I challenged the rude response and poor customer service I was told that we have what we ordered irrelevant of the difference in cost and they recommend we just don't call again! We were not offered any money back nor any apology just rude arrogant insult. To say I was not only disappointed with the service would be a lie as once we opened the food, parts were cold, parts were missing (which were never delivered) and fish in a chicken rice?? Definitely a huge disappointment and somewhere we will never be using again
