New Rays Chinese Take Away in Central Bedfordshire

Reading some of the low scoring reviews I have to wonder if they are for the same New Rays that we have been buying from for years. OK, so sometimes you arrive at the appointed time and have to wait a bit for you order to be ready, but it has never been excessive and the food has always been great. We have been customers for maybe 8 years and will continue to be based on our experience.

Second time the wait has been an hour when I order on the phone but I’ve been sitting here another half an hour. Then they have the cheek to charge you almost £3 for prawn crackers! Time to find a new Chinese

Having always gone to meedou or wok & go we decided to go to shefford New Rays Chinese, we were not disappointed, cost was £13 less than the other 2 and food was hot, fresh & tasty. And for me the fact that did Bang bang chicken has popped them in the top spot for Chinese take aways local to us. We will be back clean plates all round. The staff were friendly & polite and food was banging! Thanks guys & happy new year

Awful! Take too many orders and cannot service customers. Ordered in person, told 35 minutes, it’s been 1 hour 25 minutes and they can’t say how long?! The kitchen is literally right there! Get your business together! This is embarrassing!!

Food is OK, a couple of the chicken balls were very chewy. Keep an eye on what you've been charged compared to what their menu prices say!

A friend recommended New Rays and I decided to give it a go. Wish I hadn't. The experience began with a weird conversation with the person taking the telephone orders – not quite sure they were "all there", to be honest. Maybe they were just really busy, who knows, but the disinterest they had for their work was bordering on funny. Next up, as I went to pick up my order, I had a nasty experience with the lady owner (or at least a lady who acted like she was the owner). There was a long queue outside the restaurant, which included people who hadn't made their order yet. So I went inside to ask politely how the picking up of the food works. After standing infront of the desk for 5-7 minutes, being ignored, I politely tried a meek "excuse me", only for the lady to put her hand up in a "don't speak" manner, as she was checking someone else's order. A gentleman next to me, also waiting, looked at me and smiled in a "I know, it's always like this" manner. After another 3 minutes (which felt like 30 minutes due to the akwardness), the lady looked at me and said "YES?!" in a loud, rude manner. I enquired whether possibly my order might be ready. "NAME!!??" She barked. At this point I was getting quite amused. Anyway, long story short. Once I got the food back, we sat down to what was probably the worst Chinese food I've ever had. The only taste you could decipher was salt. Everything tasted the same and had clearly been cooked hours ago. A soppy mess. The "prawns hing kong style" were so limp that I would not be surprised if they had been cooked the day before and put in a fridge to await an unsuspecting mug (me). The only value that New Rays has is the hilariously bad-tempered and rude lady owner. She's pure comedy value and definitely should not work in customer service!

We regularly choose this Chinese for our takeaways, even though there are others nearby as they are consistently good. Sweet and sour chicken balls are lovely, not too greasy or heavy in batter. Crispy shredded beef is always good too. Hubby really rates their Lamb curry. Just a little on the expensive side or I would give them 5 stars, but you do get what you pay for and we have never had a bad meal from here.

This place has been around for years! Really nice owners and food is really good too! Always good to have a Chinese after a night out, even better when it’s on your doorstop.

Recently moved in to Shefford and tried New Rays for the first time last night (a Monday) and it will not be the last ! Really enjoyed our first experience. I phoned through the order and agreed a collection time 20 minutes later. There were 4 other customers waiting when I arrived but after a short time my food was ready. Hot, good portion sizes and most dishes are reasonably priced.

Recently moved to Shefford and was keen to find a decent Chinese takeaway. New Rays is located on the high street. We ordered by phone and were advised food would be 10 minutes, this was correct and when we arrived food had been made fresh to order. The food was delicious, very tasty and not greasy. The waiting area was very clean and presentable, so was the lady on the desk. Will definitely visit again.

I recently moved into the area and i have had a few dinners from New Rays now. I would not go anywhere else, the food is always fresh, hot and delicious.

Lovely fresh dishes good quantity. Always busy which I think is a very good sign for a takeaway. I love tgere sweet and sour chicken balls.

New to the area stumbled on this Chinese takeaway and what a pleasant surprise! It was truly delicious! Food was exceptional,staff polite, and reasonably priced! Will definately be back again!

Most consistent Chinese i'v ever been too. Food is top quality and non greasy. Staff are friendly and quick food times.

I am a 9 year old girl who loves Chinese and Asian food. My dad ordered a take away and my family was a bit disappointed. The noodles were bland and weren't seasoned. The duck wraps were tasty though. Personally I'd rather go to Bangkok Lounge round the corner.

The food is really good but they also underestimate on timings. Always quote 10-15 minutes and then an hours wait!

Never greasy and excellent service. Would recommend the chow main dishes and ribs. good value for money.

I have lived in Shefford all my life (34 years) and am so happy we have an amazing Chinese again!!! The last time it was this good was years ago when it was called the Golden Sun but unfortunately the person moved and it has always been just ok since. Well now it in my opinion is the BEST by far!!! Love all of their dishes and they are always cooked properly and are hot and fresh. Most Chinese have curry sauce which is just hot brown liquid that tastes of nothing but theirs is delicious. Also if you order crispy chilli beef it is actually crispy when you get it! Seaweed delicious and chips are delicious. You used to order and pick it up in 10 minutes but now it’s so busy you have to wait longer which I don’t mind as it is worth the wait! Love this place, please don’t move!

This Chinese is so Expensive for meals that are packed with chunks of Ginger or Carrots. Its Awful. Such a shame as Ive been going for 30 years. If you order by phone they will say see you in 10 min But to be honest go in 30 mins as you will have to wait. Its very slow. I wont ever return

As a family we've been getting a takeaway from New Rays for years. Current owners are fab, food is fresh & hot. Never had a bad meal. Fantastic!

DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. Tell us 1 time and make us wait extra 30 mins only to forget half of our order and we had to go back and then they forgot the veg for the duck pancakes. Customer service was awful as they didn't even apologise. Good alright if you don't mind waiting longer than expected, not getting your whole order & having to drive back twice!!!

Ribs are great, crispy chilli beef the best locally. All freshly made to order. Great fast service. Lush!

Fabulous food. They will cook low salt, no salt, with our without soy sauce. Vegetables still retain a crunch and taste fresh. Well worth a try. Not expensive.

Sal y azúcar en triple dosis todo - incluso algas crujientes fue mezclado con azúcar, dándole una textura irresistible. Muy desagradable. Otros platos como salsa de mermelada tenía gloopy y no mucho gusto. He dado otra oportunidad después de un largo descanso. . . error. Caro y no merece la pena. No estará haciendo de nuevo

the Deep Fried Salt & Chilli Squid is amazing! Sometimes a delay on a Saturday night but otherwise always piping hot, freshly prepared and i'd alsmost go as far as to say delicately cooked. Love the Dry Barbecue Ribs and even the Spring Rolls are finely cooked, packed with high quality ingredients, very tasty.

My favourite chinese takeaway in the local area. Food is always good value. Staff are firendly the only complaint is they can get over busy on weekends and if you ring in for pick up I have had two hour wait sometimes.Also not New Rays fault but parking can be a nightmare. Newbies expect to park in the morrisons car park a 5 minute walk away if you want to order inhouse.

This is a highly popular Chinese take away. Good service. No the best food in the World. And certainly not the food you would get if you where in China!

Hi first time here at New Rays . Food good but missing a main course the Sweet & Sour sauce was there but no crispy prawn balls . Next time I will check what's in the bag before leaving .

I use this takeaway a lot. Good steady food with pleasant staff. Never had a problem with food I have purchased from here.

This is an above average Chinese. The food was nice and you can tell it's a family business. Our order was quick to turn up. This is a takeaway only.

New to the area and wanted to find a good local Chinese take away and we weren't disappointed! We went in to order and collect and met with friendly staff. Wait was acceptable and in a warm comfortable environment. Food was full of flavour and not greasy like some from other takeaways. Only downfall was they forgot the rice we ordered but we didn't check until already home. Definitely visit them again.

I can't fault the food. It's always very good but the past couple of times I have come the wait has been over an hour despite being told 20 or 40 minutes. I wouldn't mind waiting an hour if they told me up front. I would give it five stars if they could resolve the issue with the wait times.

I saw lots of good reviews and was not disappointed. I have never been a great liver of chinese food but my partners children do. The food tastes amazing. Is good fresh and affordable. I would recommend this place. They do get very busy. You can wait up to 45/60 minutes on phone orders so bear this in mind and book ahead.Regardless it will be worth the wait!

Was in the area and stopped for a takeaway. Quick and effective service and food was really tasty. Will visit again if in the area.

My partner and I LOVE this Chinese take away! Highly recommended. The only criticism we have is that they don't offer delivery, but we happily drive to collect each time because the Chinese food is the best in the area.

A family get together with no food in the cupboard equals a take away! I used this restaurant many years ago but haven't lived in the area for a while, v so we went back to the New Rays and it didn't let us down. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and nothing was left, except the bitter taste of paying 50p for the use of debit cards even when you're spending over £30! Of rather they put everything up by 2p to cover the charge. We will definitely be going back, many times I reckon!

This Chinese takeaway which has been trading from the same premises for many years. They have an excellent, reasonably-priced menu and surprisingly large portions of their tasty food were enjoyed by the two of us. It should be noted that they are closed on Tuesdays.

We visit the area with family and have tried a number of Chinese Take-aways over the years. This is certainly the best. A good range of dishes cooked just right and to our perfection. Very tasty without being too 'salty', this is good especially for the Grandchildren. Efficient service, we will make this our preferred option on future visits. I wish we had one as good in our locality.

Placed a order on the phone ,didn't start cooking until we went to collect,which 3/4 hour from the phone to wait a further half hour after that.No that good even after that wait. Never again

YES! Finally we have found a lovely Chinese, the food is delicious and have never had a single problem, nothing is greasy or of bad quality. Great food and great tastes. One thing is that it's a Shame you don't deliver, but I can imagine that's due to the fact you are incredibly busy.

The take-away food used to be ok, nothing great, but ok. But then there must have been a change of cook and the food became very salty, and not just once but most of the time. After one particularly bad meal that was completely inedible (the smell alone was off-putting) I vowed never to buy from there again. In fairness, the lady behind the counter did offer me an immediate refund when I complained the next day but I declined it.That was about nine months ago; things might have improved since then but I'm not risking it.

The new rays Chinese takeaway is very clean and the lady who takes your order is very friendly and polite. My wife and I had chicken and mushrooms sweet and sour chicken balls egg fried rice and barbecue spare ribs in sauce. all the food was really nice and still hot enough to eat even after I got the food home with out having to warm any of it up.we also got a bag of prawn crackers free.we both enjoyed the food and would recommend it to any body else looking for a nice Chinese takeaway.

Great little take away! nice and local, good food, quickly and efficiency prepared. No complaints from me at all. Except. I always seem to want a take away on a Tuesday when they are closed!! :-)

We tend to head for Indian food but now and again go for Chinese, cannot fault the takeaways we have had from New Rays.I would definitely recommend ordering over the phone and then picking up 15 mins later, no waiting around and fresher food than delivery

I don't know if this place has changed ownership in the last year or so, but the takeaway we had, in desperation as much as anything else because we were so hungry, blew us away. So much tastier than the last time we tried this place a few years ago. Ingredients seemed to be really fresh, there was less salt (or msg) and the whole experience was altogether five star.

Often Chinese food can be a bit stodgy and doesn't always survive the Take-Away experience as well as other food, but New Rays manage to provide something that's really nice, even once you've taken the journey in the car to get it home.Food quality has increased recently and while the portion size reduced, it's much more what I expected in the first place and the ingredients seem better. Improved quality over quantity.

I have to disagree with the Steve Y, we must go to a different New Rays in Shefford, cold take out, over cooked chicken balls. And it is Not a restaurant ( you cannot eat in!!!) Steve Y, therefore it shouldn't be reviewed as such!!!!

Everything you'd want from a Chinese takeaway. Have used it a few times for picking up food. All good
