Bought the sea food platter (£22) crab, prawns, king scallops, squid and fish along side a salad. While the squid and crab were fine the rest of the meal all tasted of oil that was evident on the plate in puddles. The fish, catch of the day was tasteless other than the oily finish. It was almost like the rest of the meal was cooked in a bacon and sausage pan. The restaurant was busy but it’s no excuse for turning out an oil slick on a plate. 🐠🛢

Very old fashioned place in every sense of the word, from the decor to the menu, to the management. Really did not like it here. The owner lady was so rude, the food very dated and not very tasty. Very happy not to have to endure this place again. There are far more deserving restaurants in the village to enjoy.

Welcoming and friendly this restaurant is almost a throw back to the 1970s! though there is nothing wrong with that at all, The food was excellent and service efficient. The décor and menu selection has all the usual favourites (from the 1970s) and as some reviewer suggested the only thing that was missing was the Black Forest Gateau - they were right.

We visited Nelsons, having been previously, and we were not disappointed. Really great food, great service and great atmosphere. The choices are varied, but everything we had was so tasty. We had smoked salmon and brie tartlet, and crepe as starters, followed by the lobster and chicken and finally we had the creme brule and the coffee special desert. We will be back!

Service charge was a surprise… but other than that the food was okay yet rather salty Madeira sauce. No vegetarian options. Mushroom soup was nice enough.

Booked Nelsons last night for our evening meal for 4 people ,was not busy starter of soup, bread , olives very nice, main course we ordered two fillet of Beefs and whole garlic lobster , the Beefs was cooked very well and tasted lovely but my lobster was frozen and should of been less than the £40 it was ,and it was shrivelled up in side , cracked a large claw open and there was no meat inside so a bit disappointed as that is one of the nicest bits, overall I no it’s the last two weeks before they shut so they are winding down so I’ll forgive them this time over the frozen lobster and I think they should of made it clear they were frozen.

Restaurant never changes, lovely to see same staff, excellent menu, freshly prepared. Plus if you like lobster try it nelsons way. This delivered in every way, so pleased to be back. When you talk to locals, used for those special occasions, amazed how tourists never tried. The place is unique, love it, do not change. Enjoy your winter break and see you next year.

We had a confirmed booking for Saturday 9thOct 2021 and when we arrived the place was in darkness. No call etc from restaurant to say they would not open. Avoid this poorly managed restaurant

You have walked into a time warp restaurant with menu items straight out of the 1960’s ...but it was great food! The portions were good and tasty...all that was missing was a Black Forest gateau for desert !

Returned here after about 23 years for a lovely meal while on holiday and celebrating our wedding anniversary. Food and service was very good, steaks were very impressive and a nice night.

Disgusting attitude from the lady at front of house Nelson’s restaurant tonight when we were attempting to book a table. Customer service clearly is not in her vocabulary. What a shame as we have been visiting Polperro for years and this is the first time that we have experienced this type of attitude from anyone connected with Polperro.

Nelsons is a delightful restaurant & Bozena who is the owner is always courteous with exquisite food to follow. Well recommend to the more sophisticated dinner

Horrible, not nice. Women who runs the restaurant is rude! The restaurant looks like it’s in need of money spent on it. Out of the ark. Would be tolerable if the lady was nice but she’s angry and rude!

So glad we booked this restaurant twice in 5 nights, its fantastic. Great food, great service, not cheap but well worth it. Had the most freshest lobster I've ever tasted. Will definitely return when we go back to Polperro

I am in no doubt the food served at the Nelson is of Michelin Star standard without the award and must rate as Polperro top restaurant Four of us spent a week in Polperro and visited the Nelson twice, the variety of food was amazing each dish was prepared and cooked to perfection. As for recommendations then every dish and desert would be on the listBoth restaurant and the staff was both professional, helpful which added to a perfect night Only drawback is that early booking is essential as the restaurant is so popular

With no reservation we were lucky one night to walk in and get the last table! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food did not disappoint. We had lemon sole and Dover sole and they were able to accommodate our dairy free requests - the food was delicious and we had a lovely evening. Would highly recommend.

Lovely and welcoming atmosphere with a terrific menu. If you enjoy sea food then this is the place for you. Had a great meal with excellent wine. Service really good. Reasonable price too. Highly recommended.

We recently had dinner at Nelsons restaurant. The food could not be faulted. We don't eat meat but eat white fish or vegetarian and there was plenty options on both accounts. We both had the lemon sole for mains and the soup for starter. It was uterly delicious. The portions were a good size. Bezena is front of house and she was most efficient at her job. Would highly recommend

We had a family dinner here and the food was incredible. We are a fussy family with 2 strict vegetarians, 2 meat eaters and one fish lover: all catered for beautifully. Staff and service excellent, in fact outstanding. Bozéna was particularly attentive and helpful. Made our holiday. Highly recommended.

My partner called in on the offchance of a cancelled booking, and we were lucky, we got a table, we both had steaks I had the steak diane, and my partner fillet steak, it was the very best we had to eat in polperro, everything was just cooked to perfection and we both really enjoyed what we had to eat, the service was great too.

I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, we always visit when in Polperro and this past visit we managed to dine here twice, the food and service are always faultless, we will contine to visit when we come to Polperro.

Always eat here on our visits to Polperro. This time with my Wife, Son and Daughter-in-law. Never been disappointed. The standard of food and service is exceptional. For meat lovers I would recommend Carpetbag Steak, a sirloin steak stuffed with scallops and prawns in a meaty sauce. For fish lovers try the Bouillabaisse as good as you will get anywhere in Europe. An extensive menu in beautiful surroundings with a nautical theme.

The best food we have had in a long time. All 3 courses were incredible. The waitress was completely on her own but this did not affect the service at all. Its a shame we live 350 miles away or else we would definitely be back soon!

We managed to book a table for our last night at Polperro and were not disappointed. We had scallops and crab to start and then for mains the lobster Thermidor and the carpetbag Steak. Staff were good too.

We had a fantastic meal just before the lock down in October. We marveled at the the decor as thou we were in a French bistro, but the food was even better. We will return in 2021. We loved the area so much that we intend to buy a holiday retreat near Polperro so we can enjoy food like this weekly.Kevin & Theresa

Excellent choice of menu. Treated very well, we would definitely return. The staff knew how to make a licquer coffee correctly, which is a rarity these days. Everything about the food was fantastic, good choice and beautifully cooked and presented.

A long awaited holiday to propose to my girlfriend who always wanted to try lobster I decided we could walk coastal paths and eat fish Nelson's, was one of two places to eat and the prospect of eating lobster I booked. Unfortunately, not at all their fault but lobster was not viable or available at this time of year so we had hake and a mixed bowl of fish. The service was good as they didn't have vegan options but made the effort to help. But unfortunately the food was not good I had 5 fish in the meal, which was smothered in tomato sauce and no matter what I did I never tasted any of the local fish I hate to write negative reviews but we came down to polperro to eat this local fish at this restaurant and felt very disappointed at what we had just eaten especially consindering the price paid.

Nelsons is hidden gem, I have heard that this restaurant needs to be refurbished to todays modern era on trip advisor. Well all I can comment is this restaurant caters for the more sophisticated diner who appreciates excellent food & wine with nostalgic atmosphere This is restaurant is pure class which Oozes class & history.Sorry if you want fast food with a modern atmosphere there is alway McDonalds

My wife and I had the most amazing meal . Crab bisque to start follows by an amazing peppered Fillet Stake. Onion soup followed by Crab mornay. Wine, service & food was of the highest standard.

I had Lobster Thermidor and my wife had fish of the day. Really excellent meal and returning on Tuesday 6th October for more lobster. Yum! Yum!

We managed to book into this little gem of a restaurant for our last night of our holiday, we both had the fillet of beef with pepper sauce and it was amazing, cooked to perfection and the pepper sauce was amazing, we would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a quality meal. Superb service and very friendly.

We took family here for a meal the other day we all agreed how great everything was.We all had the mussels special as a starter- they were the best mussels we've ever had. Nelsons was not what I expected. It’s quite formal inside. However the food was very good. The fish of the day was Hake and it was cooked to perfection. The staff wore masks or visors. I’d definitely go again. You need to book ahead as it was full all week.

Excellent meal out at Nelson’s. Like others we struggled to get a table and eventually dropped lucky when someone cancelled. The menu is varied and I would have liked to eat there for a fortnight to try everything I fancied! Crab bisque and onion soup starters were delicious. Fish of the day was beautiful, fresh, moist, chunky hake fillets simply served with a choice of butters. My husband had a dessert of ginger pudding with rum custard and it was honestly perfect (I had a taste). £75 for five dishes and a very nice bottle of house wine was good value and I’d definitely recommend.

We wanted to book in all week from when we arrived on Sunday but last night was the earliest they had available. Which worked out well as it was our 10 year wedding anniversary.The setting is very traditional but I loved that, it's pricier than other local eateries but it's clear why. However just a small comment, the prawn cocktail, was literally just a traditional prawn cocktail. I was expecting for the price of it for it to be bigger prawns and something more to it. But it was tasty nether the less. I had the fillet steak in the French sauce, oh my days, the steak was absolutely delicious and the sauce was the best sauce I've ever had to compliment the steak. And I've had ALOT of steaks. It was cooked to perfection and a really good size, so much so I barely touched the potatoes and veg. The wine was also absolutely lovely. The waiter was lovely, a young man and he couldn't have done enough for us.If only we didn't live 6 hours away, I'd be a regular!

Visited in August for a romantic meal. The scallops in Pernod snd cream were fab. House white was good. Service was quick and friendly. A little pricey but then the food was worth it.

Our family of 5 had dinner at Nelsons Restaurant last night.We were all delighted with the food. My son and daughter sgared a lobster thermidor, which looked lovely and they said was very tasty.My other son had a filet steak, which was he was very pleased with. My wife had lemon sole which was cooked well, and lasted great.I had a smoked salmon tart with brie which i really enjoyed, followed by haddock in a white wine sauce which was delicious. The service was polite and the restaurant and toilets were all very clean.I thoroughly recommend Nelsons for a family meal.

We visit fairly regularly but this time dined with friends as a party of six. The quality of the food and great it's variety was unanimously agreed upon as being truly exceptional. Great seafood and superb steaks. To some, Nelsons may seem a little quirky, buts it is all the better for that. YOU MUST TRY IT if in Polperro

Visited this restaurant after being let down at another place and managing to get a cancellation booking. Everything was beautiful, we had cod mornay & mussels to start, carpetbag steak (stuffed with scallops and prawns) in a beautiful sauce and beef stroganoff. We just about managed desert- chocolate mousse & ice cream with hot berries. Service was lovely- the lady owner and both young waiters were so nice. Very attentive and made it a lovely evening.

My wife and I dined at the Nelson on the 24th July and were so looking forward to it. After waiting 1 hour and 45 minutes for our lobster Thermidor we were horrified to find they must have been boiling in the pot of just water for as long as we had been waiting They were totally tasteless, No sauce as such just grated cheese on top and grilled after boiling until they were as dry as a bone so much so you could hardly get the dried up flesh out of the shell , I am a Professional Chef with 45 years experience working as Head Chef in some of the worlds leading Hotels and Restaurants Unfortunately it was the worst lobster I have ever been presented with. I requested to speak to the Chef Proprietor Tony, to discuss with him our disappointment with the lobster ( I have not mentioned the vegetables which were served with it , no seasoning whatsoever) However, he was not interested at all in my comments /feedback and would have none it, he was interested in his bill which I paid in full. I never asked for a discount and did not ask to speak to him to get one. As a professional Chef my passion is food and especially Seafood I wanted to share my disappointment with him, not interested just wanted the bill settled. The only waitress serving that night who was quite friendly but was clearly overstretched as the restaurant was as full as it could be due to COVID advised he had been in this kitchen since he was six years old!! If that is the case he has clearly not learnt much and is a mediocre cook at best ,The lobster deserves much better than this . I have never written a negative review before but I feel really strongly compelled to warn his customers not to order the Lobster at any cost .

We ate on a Tuesday evening just as the restaurant reopened from lockdown. The lone waitress did a superb job and managed all diners in the right order much to our amazement. We picked a 5lb lobster for my husband and daughters partner to share, it was stunning and they both enjoyed it with fascination. My daughter and I tucked into a fillet steak with peppercorn sauce which were cooked to perfection. We had a fabulous meal and whilst the decor was extremely dated and the restaurant very warm, this paled in significance as we began to eat. We are back in Polperro again in October and plan to dine here again of course!

My husband and I ate at Nelsons last night and all I can say is if they had got a free table this evening we would d have booked again. This restaurant has everything. A great ambience, lovely staff and most of all fantastic food. We both opted for steak, mine was Entrecote 'Diane' and my husband ordered the Fillet 'au poivre'. They were both the best steaks we had ever tasted. If you only eat out once in Polperro make it here!!!!

My Wife had never had Lobster before, we decided that while on holiday this year in Polperro we would try and find somewhere to introduce her to the King of crustaceans.Nelsons was the restaurant we chose and booked our table.When we arrived we were greeted warmly and seated at a lovely table by the front window, the décor of Nelsons is quite Unique and it had a warm feel to it with the lights set to a slight dim and a little candle flickering away on the table, my wife and i felt very comfortable as soon as we sat down.For a starter my wife had Crab with Mornay sauce, it was presented well and tasted delicious. I opted for the special moules marinières, This Normandy classic was cooked to perfection, the mussels were fresh and plump with a fantastic white wine and cream sauce, with lots of garlic, I loved the sauce and was happy to soak it up with the lovely selection of bread that also accompanied the dish.for the main event we asked for Lobster, i was shown a list of the fresh lobster they had bought that day and chose a medium sized lobster for myself weighing 2lb and a slightly smaller one for my wife coming in at 1.5lb.as it was my wife Anya first taste of lobster she choose to have it grilled with Butter and Garlic, I went for the thermidor.the lobsters were fresh and the taste was out of this world, we shared each others so that Anya could see which she preferred, the garlic butter version one but i was very happy with my Thermidor.the lobsters were also served with New potatoes and a selection of veg, the veg by the way were also delicious and cooked perfectly.at the end of the main course we both looked at each other and agreed we should have ordered bigger lobsters so we immediately booked ourselves in for a second sitting on Tuesday. we have also pre ordered two lobsters just over 3lb each :-)only I had a dessert, i chose a lovely homemade chocolate mousse with Amaretto and homemade vanilla ice cream, it was just a perfect ending to a lovely evening and great food.See you on Tuesday Nelsons we cant wait.

Only looked to see if it was still there because I am looking at properties in & around. It has been many a long year since our crowd went to IMHO the best restaurant in Cornwall. We would do our famous shark fishing trips in Looe, 14 of us, stopping at Crumplehorn Mill Inn when Andrew Taylor owned the Crump.We dined here over many years until 10 years ago; there was a good seafood restaurant around the corner too. Loved the seafood, the shellfish/sea fish soup, steaks were gorgeous & it had an excellent wine seller too. Our crowd were an eclectic mix of Insurance, Banking, Finance, and military, many who enjoyed London restaurants on expenses accounts, all rated Nelsons among the best. It is suited to all, couples, families & solo.

Well we decided to stay last minute in Polperro and we walked down to the village on the evening not fancying a pub meal so we went to Nelsons restaurant and WOW the food was gorgeous, the ambience was great and the waiting staff were wonderful. Plus the dessert menu was really quaint and a great idea.

We had a fantastic meal as usual before Nelson's closes for their winter break. Fabulous fresh fish, great tasty steaks and a wine too! Cant wait for march!!

We ate here on our first night and the food was lovely especially the steak but also good selection of fish on the menu. Great choice on a la carts menu and the fixed price menus. We will be returning on our next visit to polperro

Every summer from my first birthday for maybe the next 14 or 15 years our family would visit Polperro, and probably for the last 10 of those years I can remember pressing my nose against the window of Nelsons and marvelling at the opulence and grandeur that I observed inside. I spent my childhood visits to Polperro always wanting to dine at Nelsons, but felt I never would. I have visited Polperro many times since, and logistics never quite made it possible for me to visit Nelsons, until my visit at the beginning of October this year. My wife Tina and I planned on booking a table, but weren’t sure what night we’d be free, so chanced our luck at the last minute on the Saturday evening and just walked in. Fortunately there was space for us. This was my first time inside Nelsons, and Tina and I weren’t disappointed. It still has the same beautiful opulent interior with dark red walls and plush red velvet seating. We were greeted and shown to our table and offered the menu. After asking our waitress what our options were as vegans, we were presented with a whole vegan menu. Tina and I both opted for the same dishes, roasted pepper soup to start and a delicious pasta arrabbiata with roasted tomatoes. While we waited for our first course we made our wine choice, probably the nicest Prosecco we’ve ever tasted, an organic bottle from Treviso Italy, called Divici. (Also vegan obviously). And to munch, hot olives with bread!(delicious).The whole meal was amazing, the staff incredibly attentive and Nelsons just as amazing as I thought it would be after all these years. Thank you for not disappointing us. The chef is the son of the original owners, and his care and passion really shows through the service and his food. We’ll definitely come back when we’re in Polperro again. If your in Polperro, book yourself a table at Nelsons, you won’t be disappointed.

My partner and I visited Polperro last week and dined here on recommendation from my dad who has visited Polperro for years and always says how great Nelsons is. He wasn’t wrong- it was so great we booked to go again on our last night before we left the restaurant. My partner had fillet steak both times and it was a lovely cut of meat and cooked perfectly. I had the hake and then lemon sole. Again, both were amazing. We were served by the very professional and accommodating lady owner and a lovely young lady who was very smiley and attentive and great at offering recommendations. Would highly recommend to anyone, particularly if you’re visiting from abroad and looking for a really traditional restaurant full of character.

Ended up here almost by default as didn’t want pub grub and only other restaurant in town that was open was apparently fully booked. Great service. Great menu. Great decor. Great food. Only minor issue for me was the dull veg served with most dishes. I loved the crab bisque followed by crab mornay. I would definitely come back.

We visited this lovely restaurant on óur first evening ín Polperro. It was a lovely find with fantastic food. It was so nice to eat somewhere with a cloth on the table rather than a sticky wooden table with knives and forks in a pot. There was nice relaxing music in the background and the waitress who looked after us was amazing with a fabulous sense of humour. This is a wonderful restaurant which I wouldn't hesitate in recommending for something a little bit special.

An absolutely fabulous find, fantastic food, this restaurant was full of diners served by just two staff, they were attentive to all diners and treated everyone beautifully. A further visit on my next trip to polperro is definite. 10/10

Called in without booking and lucky to find a table available. Young waiter attentive and friendly, food very nice and seeing the quantity and quality will be more adventurous with our choices as “we’ll be back”. A lot of comments here on the decor but we loved it,perhaps it’s an age thing lol.

Tastiest mussels I have had for a long time and main course of haddock was delicious. My husband had the hake which was also very nice. Altogether a fabulous meal and we would highly recommend a visit here.

The decor harks back to a previous time - lots of red around - which is a bit quirky by modern standards, but don't be put off, the food is great. Plenty of menu options (fish, meat and vege), good wine list. Definitely worth having dinner here during your visit to Polperro.

The Nelson restaurant in Polperro is a must to visit for everybody who likes an excellent food, especially sea food. The atmosphere and decoration takes you back to the times of Lord Nelson. The music is also well chosen. All staff is very friendly and always willing to advise you on food or wine. Everything we eat and drank was excellent. We will be back.

we visitied the nelson restaurant on the 24/7/19, the food we had was excellant with a lovely bottle of wine. yes the decor is a little dated but the food tasted great, the staff were attentive and very friendly. would recommend this restaurant every day

I was a little bit dubious when first arriving at Nelson’s - the decor and menu did seem a little dated. However, the experience turned out to be a very pleasant surprise - the food was outstanding, beautifully cooked. Highly recommend.

En vacances à Polperro, nous avons dîné pour notre dernier soir dans ce restaurant et n’avons pas regretté. Il est très joli de l’extérieur comme à l’intérieur, décoré de tableaux et statuettes de Nelson. Même si ce dernier a battu les français, je ne lui suis pas rancunier. Le service est très bien, les conseils sont bons. Les plats sont bien présentés et délicieux. Je recommande la soupe et la sole. Le village de Polperro est splendide. Bref, allez-y !

2nd day of our holiday in Polperro we decided to try Nelson’s for dinner. Beneath the rather dated menu displayed outside, it says to ask inside for the vegetarian menu, so my husband & I went in. We were met at the door by the manageress/maître d′ (?). I asked if I could see the vegetarian menu, she appeared inconvenienced, no hello or welcome which I thought was odd. She handed me the vegetarian menu, there was plenty to choose from so we decided to book for 1 hour later. As she was taking my details, a much younger lady (a member of staff, who appeared very sweet) said hello and I said hello back. As we turned away to leave the manager chastised the young lady for talking to me. I was extremely shocked as the young lady had only been polite, more so than the other lady. It put me off wanting to eat there as I don’t want to dine in establishments that don’t treat their staff kindly. I rang to cancel the booking. The same woman answered the phone and was extremely rude to me! Having read other reviews on TripAdvisor, I’m not the first to experience to rudeness of this vile woman, she’s clearly horrible to staff & customers.

Chose Nelson’s as a place to celebrate whilst on holiday. Food, service and drinks were amazing. Had a lovely bottle of champagne with our meal: lobster, scallops, fillet steak, hake and a vegetarian pancake. Great to have a vegetarian choice for once. Our daughter said it was the best lobster she’d ever had. Service was great, attentive but not intrusive. We couldn’t recommend enough. Thank you Nelsons team.

After a long day walking through polperro me and the other half fancied having dinner in the village. We wanted something that would please the tastebuds and as we had had a little peek at the menu on passing earlier in the day we thought we would try Nelson's. I read a few reviews and after everywhere else seemed to be fully booked on a thursday evening? We chose to book in.

We really like this restaurant. It hss old world charm, good food, well priced and well presented. The staff are attentive without being over the top.

Have visited here before but this time was lucky to have the lobster Thermidor which was sensational. In fact everything we had including the wine was first class and i would say offered great value for money compared so some of the more pretentious restaurants in Cornwall and Devon.

Stumbled across this lovely place on a Friday night and we were all blown away by the food. The fish soup is incredible, as was the steak and other dishes we had. So glad we found this gem, just sad to have found it on our last night in Polperro. Service was great as well, and the head waitress was lovely. Will definitely be back!

Lovely place for a romantic meal. Really enjoyed the meal. Friendly staff, very popular best to book. Would recommend.

Came away with my husband for a couple of child free days for his 40th birthday - wanted a special meal for our last night so booked Nelsons.

Wanted to have a good fish dinner with my son and we certainly got this. The steamed scallops with the roe on were superb and then the whole lemon sole to follow was absolutely delicious even though I felt it had been cooked one or two minutes over.

Visited on the recommendation of a local B&B..; absolutely brilliant, from the service to the food we couldn't fault it. Loved it so much we visited twice in our five night break.. highly recommended.

Initially booked a table for one night ended up eating there for 3 nights! Lovely atmosphere and delicious food.

Booked Nelsons for my partners 50th birthday on the 10th April 2019 with friends, we had an amazing evening from beginning to end. Nelsons in my view is by far the best restaurant in Polperro, the service and food are incredible. We’re back in Polperro in June and I suspect at least 2 of the evenings will be spent in the amazing Nelsons.

We’ve walked passed Nelsons’ many a time in the past, the old fashioned appearance of the place has always seemed to put us off.

We booked a table for a Tuesday night and turned up to find fifteen other people eating there, which for a chilly night in March was a good number of hungry punters. We were shown our seat which was near the stairs leading down to the toilets. We asked the waitress if we could move and she moved up to by the front window, no fuss.

A delightful place with genuine and highly experienced staff. The dining room is eccentric with a Lord Nelson overload but is comfortable and a good blend of privacy but with a social buzz .
