We used to eat at Nazrul when we lived in Stepney 40 years ago. Some change is to be expected especially as Brick Lane has become a tourist destination , but we did enjoy the food, including some vegan dishes and it’s still BYO. However, in the excitement of sharing a meal with the 4 of us, I didn’t check the handwritten bill which disappeared after my payment. Only later did I realise that I paid £89 for what should have cost approximately £73. Not a huge deal but I should have checked, especially having left a tip.

Turned up,relatively late for lunch and a wonderful warm welcome from the staff. Service was excellent, menus are vast and took a while to choose. You can opt for your tried and trusted favourites or choose something that you wouldn’t normally go for. Dishes served were all excellent and decent portions. All 3 of us loved each of our dishes. Will definitely return, go and enjoy.

We went here because of the great stories we heard and it is worth the visit! The food is delicious, obviously made with care and at a great price for the amount you get. Our server Mash was very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend it!

We came here upon a friend’s recommendation and it was great! Nabil and Islam were excellent and Nabil helped us a lot with the menu. This is a BYOB place so know that before you go. I ordered chicken saag and garlic naan and my boyfriend had the vegetarian biryani with vegetable currie. Both dishes were delicious.

This restaurant is part of the Aladin group and the food is every bit as good. My friend had Aloo Chop to start, I had onion bhaji. I can’t remember what my friend had for main - a lamb dish with a creamy looking sauce. I had chicken vindaloo. We were both very happy. The service was good, as always.

Nothing good to say about this place. Food was over salted with no spice to speak of. Bland and barely edible. 80 min wait for food. Surely not a professional chef? Very poor, don't wast you money or time here.

In my opinion, this is one of the best restaurants in Brick Lane - the others being in the Aladin group. The food is excellent and the staff are all friendly and helpful. I’ve been going there so long that we can have a good chat about our families. We can take our own wine, and they will put spare bottles in the fridge. Today we both had chicken tikka blast, with onion bhaji, bindi bhaji and tarka daal. It was excellent. All of it. I absolutely recommend this restaurant for good food and good value for money.

Maten smakade i princip ingenting.

The most important thing - the food is delicious! The service is professional & friendly. The restaurant isn't licensed, but they will happily let you bring your own alcohol, and indeed will give you a discount card for a local mini-market. Reasonable prices, we paid around £17 per person.

It's a typical pseudo Indian cuisine made by Bangladeshi chefs. Vindaloo, Madras etc. aren't authentic Indian curries and remnants of the British empire. It was fine in the 80s but not in 2021. Top of which the restaurant insists on having a main course which for the price isn't justified in quantity nor quality. You're better off eating at Mac'D than this joint.

One of our colleagues brought us to this place for a team dinner. I’m not much familiar with Indian food, and all I thought that it was spicy (I don’t like spicy food) and all curry :) so I was nicely surprised to find more than that. They cook all food in there, they can make any dish vegetarian if you ask and everything I tried tasted freshly made. We’ve ordered a bunch of starters, which I thought would be just for a bit of tasting, but for a group of 12 people it looked like a table served for an Indian wedding :) As this appeared to be buy-your-own-alcohol place, they were happy to run for some wine & beer to the nearest off-license (note that this wouldn’t happen in another BYOB place, they would just tell you that you should’ve brought your own). Some people in the comments below were not happy about giving cash for that, - well we didn’t have any cash, so this was then included on the bill (and I wouldn’t mind paying a bit extra as a tip for the effort). Overall, mail course dishes were not expensive and there was a very good variety to anyone’s liking.

First of all we fell for the man in the street ushering us in scam offering 20% discount and first round of drinks free....We had a group of 15 celebrating a friend’s 50th birthday. Upon entering the venue we sat down to discover they do not sell alcohol, but if you give the staff your cash they will go to their off licence and purchase you wine and beer, funny though as whatever you give them is the exact amount of the wine or beer....small world! So a free round of lemonade and coke all round, next the £1.00 each poppadoms and the extra 75p per person for the condiments. Service was quick, food nothing special, in fact food below average..Mine was the tandoori mixed meats, chewy and burnt. Trying to get a wine ice bucket was hard work but when we asked for the warm bottle of purchased wine....the one they got, to be placed in a fridge the reply was and I quote “Our fridge is warmer then that ice”! Time to change any orders involving meat to salad and veg!!!!, a warm fridge used to store their items, nice touch, but no one ever died from food poisoning right?. But now on to the best bit...the bill. The bill should have come to around £230.00 for 15 people, this included the 20% discount, birthday boys meal for free and first round of drinks. The bill given (see attached photo) was just over £430.00. When challenged I was told, don’t argue pay the bill. Now, the good thing here is I don’t drink alcohol and consider myself to be fairly good at math (rubbish at spelling). I told the waiter to stop been ridicules and get the real bill as by his workings out (before discount) we had spend on a curry each (no other courses) over £35.00 per person. The waiter took back the bill (managed to photo it first). We waited and waited and after a silly amount of time I told the waiter in 2 minutes we are going, if you want paying please give me the bill....A new bill arrived (see attached photo) this time for about £269.00, still way over the correct amount. It was explained that we would not pay it and offered them the legal resolve of us paying a percentage and they take us to court having written down one the groups address.....to say this went down like a lead balloon is an understatement, in fact we were told it was illegal and we cannot do this!!!! After much discussion which pretty much went along the line of you must pay, with us replying yes but the correct bill the manager came down to us. I asked him to go through the bill in front of me with a calculator, amazing the £269.00 bill came to £235.00, we paid this as it was close enough to the correct figure of about £15.00 per person with discounts etc. I challenged the manager as to why the bills had come down from £430.00 > £269.00 > £235.00, he said sorry it’s an error...It’s NOT an error it is a group of thieves working to rip people of they hope are not going to notice. My first bit of advice is don’t go inside.....if a company needs to employee hustlers to get you of the street then that is the first warning note, if like us you fall for this trick then note everything down you spend and challenge them. I am taking the matter further with local authorities and hope they stop this illegal practice. And to finish, if you are stupid and go in, see if you can spot the food curry sauce dried up and left on the picture of the farm scene (See photo) in the basement..nice touch! A shocking experience and the worst I have experienced in my life. Avoid like never before, do not go in, stay clear....

I actually wanted to go to Aladdin but they guided me to Nazrul but I guess they're the same (they were right next to each other and it seems like the owner wanted me to go to Nazrul to try it instead).I only had 1 day in London for my UK trip (since I'vve been to London before and have seen most of the touristy areas) and this was one of the 3 things I really wanted to do: Eat curry at Brick Lane. I wanted to order the regular curry but the lovely wait staff recommended I go for the lamb bhuna instead. And I'm glad I took his suggestion because IT WAS AMAZING.I've had amazing Indian food before (we have an Indian neighborhood in Chicago) but I've not had this amazing bhuna. I will forever dream of this until I can go back to Brick Lane again.

I thought I was at Aladin. That’s what the signs on the doors said. Once sat I realised I was at Nazrul- ‘a branch of aladdin’. Ate about 8:30. Managed to get a table immediately. They were busy, service was a bit rushed, but competent. Staff busy, but polite. Believe Aladin is next door. Heard staff tell someone who queried this that it’s the same chef and all dishes are same. Menus matched. I was very satisfied with my meal. Had lamb naga, dhal and a Nan. Brought own beer. Lamb tender food tasty. To be honest I don’t think next door could have made what I had any better. Would be happy to recommend, happy to return.

Visted last night. Have been several times before over many years. The sign above the door said Aladin but it was covering the old Nazrul sign. These two restaurants are next to each other and run by the same people I believe.Chicken tikka jalfrezi was very good and the chicken naga was certainly hot enough.Naan was a bit big and doughy for my liking, but was ok.Service was friendly and quick. This probably isn't the place for a relaxed slow meal - its Brick Lane and the vibe is busy so its a quick turn around.Bring your own booze - get a card from the staff and get a discount at the off licence 50 metres away - no corkage charge.Restaurants in Brick Lane are notoriously hit and miss, so glad that last nights visit was a hit!

My husband and I were in London and on a Street Art walking tour when we went by all the curry houses on Brick Lane. After the tour we went back to have a meal. While walking past Nazrul, a wonderful man in a blue turban talked to us about the restaurant and was available to answer questions about the menu. After hearing about what we were looking for, he recommended the Lamb Chili Tikka Masala. It was AMAZING! Since returning home, I have now looked up a recipe for it and have already made it once. My husband, prior to having London Indian curry, was not a fan of Indian food. Now he can't get enough. This is also the sister restaurant of Aladin, also on the same block. Go there - you won't be disappointed.

We went through the usual tedium all along the street of restaurants touting for business. Really irritating. Picked this one at random just to get off the street. Only after being seated did we find out it was a bring your own booze place. A staff member offered to go down the street to the off licence instead of us going. The waiter pushed the big starter and continually tried to ‘up’ our selections to more expensive choices. The portions were big - some good, some average. Without asking, our bill was plonked down on the table; a hint to leave. Then a staff member actually asked us to go - we still had drinks to finish - as he wanted other customers in. Frankly, I’d avoid this or any restaurant in the Brick Lane area; unless you like being treated like cattle.

Since moving to The Netherlands, I miss Indian food! It's not quite as good here as it is in the UK.We didn't have dinner plans as such for a Monday evening, but I remembered Brick Lane was famous for curry houses and Aladin came up in the top 10 when I Googled it. We got to the restaurant and were met by a waiter telling us that they now owned the restaurant next door and we could be seated straight away there. We had a big table and poppadoms were brought to us shortly afterwards with tasty pickles. My husband ordered a Cobra. I asked for a wine, but was told they were not licensed premises, however, they offered to get a small bottle of wine for me from a nearby store and add it to the bill, which I accepted.I ordered a starter of vegetable samosas and my husband ordered a potato dish. For the main, I ordered a Chicken korma and my husband ordered a biriyani. We shared a rice and a naan. All the meals were delicious, although I think this is the first time I've not seen hot plates/grills with candles underneath used in an Indian restaurant. The staff were so helpful and delightful. Our waiter, Monjur, was lovely, but he insisted we should give Abdul all the credit as he brought our food to us! My partner and I have dined at Nazrul on numerous occasions and had nothing but good experiences.Unfortunately when we took friends there Saturday 15 July we had a very unenjoyable time.Despite booking we ended up in the stuffy downstairs room where the staff were reluctant to turn on the air conditioning despite the fact more and more people were being crammed in down there. Very uncomfortable and it was a relief to finish and get outside. The was a rowdy table of 10 who kept singing and being generally rude and disruptive to everyone else. We mentioned it a couple of times but the staff didn't seem overly concerned. They seemed short staffed and the service was brusque without the usual banter. We had to ask for the bill repeatedly, had to ask for the complimentary chocolates of which two were so inedible due to being melted and had to ask for the towelettes to clean our hands.A table upstairs spilt their beer which dripped down onto where we were sitting staining a jacket. When we complained to what turned out to be the assistant manager he rudely brushed us off and said it wasn't his problem. No one bothered to clean the mess off the seat. The branch supervisor did come to the rescue and apologise and offer to take the dry cleaning cost off the bill which was appreciated. The food was superb but we took the majority of it home for takeaway as we didn't have much of an appetite with all of the above.Disappointing! We will go back once more but not on a Saturday and not downstairs.

This was a 'walk by solicitation' of free drinks from the manager. We accepted the offer and walked in the open air front to bench seating along the narrow length of the dining room. The menu had more, unique, choices than the usual items. I chose cyelon (sp?) - something I had not had before. The dish did not disappoint, not that I had any expectations to begin with. Overall good food. When the bill came the one drink that was ordered was still on the bill despite the 'free drinks' that lured in the first place. Oversight or other, the waiter removed it when it was brought to his attention a 2nd time. Nutshell - a slightly expensive, but good/new tastes place to have a meal; just double check the bill.

We went on a Friday night and it was very busy. Once we were seated we were then ignored for a good long time. When a waiter finally came to take our order I asked for a pint of lager. That was his opportunity to tell us they didn't have an alcohol license. Instead he said he would take our drink order later. Half an hour after we sat down our food arrived. I said we'd had nothing to drink and wanted a couple of beers and was told I'd have to go to the off license down the road. With the food in front of us I couldn't be bothered so ordered a bottle of water, which didn't arrive. No amount of trying to get a waiter's attention worked so I had to get up from the table and go find someone. By the time the water arrived we'd given up on eating (and the food wasn't particularly good in any case. We left most of it. Big delays trying to get the bill and when it arrived they had snuck on a 10% service charge without listing it - very naughty. I deducted it anyway as the service was non-existent. A large table behind us had also got their bill and found items listed that they hadn't ordered. Never again!

Came to the famous Brick Lane for a meal; the waiter who 'looked after us' for the majority of our meal treated us like an inconvenience. The waiter who took our money was friendly; shame he wasn't our waiter all night. The food was tasty, a bit on the greasy side for us, and quite overpriced.Left with the same feelings we did when we ate at an Indian restaurant in Birmingham's curry mile; nothing special; between average to below average.

Well it's London so you have to expect it to be pricey. A basic restaurant with no frills such as tablecloths. But service was good and food OK. There's nothing that would attract me back but nothing that makes it worth avoiding. An average restaurant in a street with lots of alternatives

This place is horrendous. I've never experienced such bad, aggressive racist service in my life. The evening started with waiting an hour followed by the waiters adding additional items to the bill without notice jacking the bill up considerably. All in all run but a bunch of criminals it would seem. Very disappointed as it was a fri bad bad. Avoid at all costs.

We were told at every point that things would cost more than our set menu. We were then told to get up so that others could sit when we were still halfway through a drink. And the food was the least exciting I've had on brick lane.

If you want to see rats when your dining then this is the place to be in. I mentioning it to the manager but was told that the whole of brick lane was full of them. What a response

This was my first time in the Nazrul, in the company of friends who are regulars. The food was excellent, the service professional & friendly. The restaurant isn't licensed, but they will happily send someone out to get chilled beers. Reasonable prices, we paid £17 per person.

We had a meal at Nazrul last night. We decided on this restaurant because the spruiker didn't hassle us. Friendly staff and quick service, which is what we were after. We only had mains, a Butter Chicken and a CTM. Both were very good and reasonably priced. We would happily eat here again.

So I knew the tricks down Brick Lane and was determined not to get suckered! Chose (I thought) wisely, the guy out front said this joint was 1 of 3, sister restaurants, all the same menu, I wanted to have a few Kingfisher lagers with my curry (is that fair enough?!) and asked if they had on tap...I got "yes sir you can have anything you want, anything you want sir" in reply, we went in...and guess what!? The first 2 beers were free I should add, but the young lad had to run over to the offy to get 2 bottles of Cobra! haha. We had a bit of an argument with him when I ordered next drinks - he made lots of excuses about saying he has to go to the offy, and he needed cash/couldnt add it to the bill! We were starting to feel rather conned! Manager came over and smoothed it over by telling him to go get beers. Why dont these places advertise as BYO (like they do in Aus?)!!!Anyway...jalfrezi and madras were spot on. Cheese and garlic & peshwari naan were superb. Overall a good feed, but sort out the service guys, seriously, this is London in 2016. Nobody wants to be conned/tricked into a restaurant where you can't get what you asked about out the front. I was not in Delhi or Dhakar, I was in Shoreditch...don't take me for a ride or I'll write a review like this! :-)

There are many options of Indians restaurants in Brick Lane, we were encouraged by the staff in front of Nazrul to go inside. We had a lovely meal, excellent service & we enjoyed the buzz of the place. If you enjoy Indian flavor it is worth to give a try!

This looked a busy restaurant, and nicely done out so we tried it. The lamb was inedible, as tough as an old boot. Service is rude but when the manager intervened he was very good. The surprise service charge is outrageous. Starters were tiny and expensive. One of the two curries was lovely. Wouldn't recommend this joint, sorry.

This restaurant is a scam! We were lured in with a 25% discount which they did not want to grant in the end. Instead the already overpriced £11.95 dish from the menu ended up costing £17.95. After a bit of an argument I got the waiter to grant the discount, but he then insisted on an outrageous tip.We waited 55(!!!) minutes for our food, which was forgettable and nothing special whatsoever.Waiting staff is rude and doesn't care about remarks. My complaint was simply ignored. The fact that they advertise a 5 star trip advisor rating on their door is shameless fraud! I should have checked before - well, I know better for the future. Don't ever come here!

We chose this restaurant because it had a neon sign that said "The Oldest Curry Restaurant in Brick Lane" as if that should be a good enough reason to visit a restaurant. It isn't.The food was OK but nothing special. Imagine the food from your local takeaway and that's about the standard you can expect from here. It's not restaurant quality. The service was satisfactory but it seemed more about up-selling than finding out if the meal was OK. We were asked several times if we wanted poppadoms which we declined every time. The waiter wrote "No Pops" on our bill. The waiter also told us "no beer" and we said that was OK. We ordered some soft drinks. This restaurant doesn't have a license to sell alcohol but you can bring your own.We ate our food, remarked how average it was for the legendary Brick Lane, paid and left. To add insult to injury - the restaurant adds 10% onto the bill as a Service Charge. This is written on the menu and stamped on the bill but it was never mentioned to us.Having gone to Brick Lane specifically for a curry we realise now that the Brick Lane of yesteryear has changed a lot. You might be better off avoiding Brick Lane and going to a highly rated curry house elsewhere in London.

I was so disappointed to have gone here! One of my friends agreed a deal with the tout outside. Once inside, they tried to change what they had agreed. The beers were watered down, the food was mediocre at best but the worst part was the terrible service. The food took ages to come out, I had to ask five times before I got a drink and today I have a bad stomach! I will certainly never be going back here and would not recommend this to anyone.

Took my girlfriend here. Was her first time in London. Place was empty so we walked in as it said the oldest in Brick Lane. Firstly asked for a drink only to find they have no alcohol licence, so they need to get beers from a local shop.Food was pleasant, staff were young and polite, had some issues dealing with food allergies but overall was a ok place to eat. Restaurant was clean and food good.

Overall a very bad experience – hair were found in 2 of the dishes – which is quite repulsive – but could have been handled nicely to make up for it – except that the staff didn’t apologize but actually blamed us and implied the hair was our own despite it being so obviously not the case – very poor customer service and aggressive attitude – avoid that table.

Had a really lovely passanda here. Possibly one of the best I've had! Boyfriend loved his curry too- the chicken Ceylon. Sag aloo was great. Service however was rubbish!! Our first server was friendly and nice, he took our drinks order then seemed to disappear. Our second server was so so slow! Despite asking three times, our bill took longer to arrive than having a starter and main course!

My friend and I wanted to try one of the curry restaurants in Brick Lane. We ended up in this one after the tout hassled us to get in. The food was ok, the prices not so much... the service was terrible, though. First, we were pressured to order more food (we didn't give in and we were perfectly satisfied with the amount we ordered). From then on, the waiter was very aggressive and rude. The ambiance was far from quiet and relaxing, with the waiters always getting in and out of the restaurant, apparently going into the restaurant next door. As we were sitting near the door, it was bothersome. We also found the irony in having a tout in front of a sign asserting the restaurant's compliance with the city council's no touting policy... this should have tipped us off. Avoid this place, there are many options nearby.

I used to go here as a child 20 years ago with my dad. I decided to come back 20 years later and noticed that it had changed. It looked new and fresh. The food hasn't changed but that is good as the food is worth it. Good value for money and great service. I would definitely go back and want to continue the tradition with my own family as my sons enjoyed the food and highly recommend mango lassi!!!

Not a 5 star experience. Firstly despite an online booking at Cinnamon we were taken to the restaurant next door (Aladin), there was some muttering about having expanded their business but no money has been spent yet on modernising the Aladin establishment. We were then pressured to order our food within 5 mins of sitting down, but even so when our food arrived it was lukewarm at best. Flavour was fairly good but our lamb was tough. When the bill arrived it was hand written and hard to decipher leaving us unsure if we had been charged service / corkage / or even the right number of dishes. We were due a 20% online booking discount and had to ask for this directly. So I can't offer a better score for service.

WOW! Popped in today for lunch and was genuinely amazed by the food. I had the boneless chicken jalfrezi, aubergine, and daal with plain rice and it was probably one of the best Indian restaurant dine in meal I've had in a very long time - very tasty, authentic, and quality ingredients used. I use to run my own Indian takeaway a few years ago, so I was seriously impressed with the food and service.

Ordered on deliveroo- the food was atrocious! Naan bread burned to a cinder, mixed grill drowned in salt, pilau rice slimy and rotten-smelling, byriani rotten-smelling and weird texture. Truly disgusting food, this company should be ashamed to serve such food. Got a full refund from deliveroo thankfully and the food went straight into the bin!
