National Gallery in Edinburgh, City of

This is a lovely gallery to visit, with the RSA just across from it, it holds paintings by many famous & historic artists - such as Van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer, Claude Monet & many more. Definitely worth a visit & as an art student, it’s influential.

A great gallery showing old and new. We didn't have time to look at all of it, but we were greeted by friendly staff and the gallery itself was very clean and tidy.

Fabulous gallery with something for everyone. We easily spent an hour but could have stayed longer. A good place to return to.

Reasonable food, let down by poor service. Chips were not hot enough and the banana dessert took ages to be served- but looked unappetising. Delays for some dishes, and poor communication between the waiting staff. Such a shame.

Die National Gallery ist wesentlich grösser als die Porträt-Gallery. Auf alle Fälle ist die National Gallery auch sehenswerter. Die National-Gallerie ist eine Art-Gallerie. Der Besucher bekommt auf drei Etagen wunderschöne Gemälde zu sehen. Das Haus ist behindertengerecht eingerichtet. Mit einem Fahrstuhl können behinderte Menschen auch in die oberen Etagen der Gallerie gelangen. Der Eintritt ist an allen Tagen für alle Besucher kostenfrei. Für das leibliche Wohl wird im Gallerie-Cafe gesorgt. Die National-Gallery befindet sich auf der Princes Street und ist täglich geöffnet. Die Gemälde sind sehr sehenswert. Man sollte also bei einem Besuch mehrere Stunden einplanen.

Rated 4 stars not 5 as wine by the glass is very expensive. Thankfully we don't drink at midday but if you do.....Otherwise only criticism was my chips were very dry even after vinegar added. Otherwise very enjoyable. Ava looked after us really well, very attentive, considerate and efficient. The soup was delicious, the open sandwich with peppers looked great and was. My haggis dish was very interesting. The 'buttery' was amazing. Puff pastry base with the haggis spread on top then covered with the cheese and a 'dollop' of jam, looking like a friend egg on top. Terrific presentation and taste. Although busy it was very relaxing and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit now accessible from the Gallery directly.

Et meget flot og imponerende kunstmuseum med gratis adgang og et hav af helt fantastiske malerier. Hvis man er til kunst, er dette museum et must!

I had arranged to meet up with some friends in Edinburgh whilst on holiday in Berwick, but as I had a couple of hours to spare before I met them, I decided to visit the art gallery. This was my first time the gallery here, and I was not dissapointed, there are some lovely paintings on display there. Very well laid out, and was free to enter, the few staff I spoke to, were very helpful. Would like to spend more time there, on my next visit.

If I’m being honest this gallery was just okay. There are building works happening outside which may contribute to the overall atmosphere and the fact that it’s split over 2 building seemed strange too. Did see some great art though but on the whole I’d prefer to go to the Portrait Gallery.

A fantastic collection of fine art. Some stand out masterpieces including the Monarch of the Glen and some great pieces of renaissance art by major artists

The impressionists exhibit had wonderful potential - a first class collection, and Ibwas much looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the exhibit was far to crowded to enjoy. And it was further marred by all the patrons who were endlessly poking at their phones! For heavens sake, if you can’t be ‘in the moment’ in the presence of great art…stay home!

Impressionists exhibition met all my expectations, it was lovely to see a Degas upfront! Very well organised and detailed explanation. Highly recommend

Visit with family (adults) mainly to impressionist rooms. Small display of beautiful paintings representing the greats of Impressionism and post-Impressionism. Excellent free gallery with cafe.

Are you a fan of triptychs and singletychs? If you are, you'll enjoy this gallery (Diptych lovers, you'll be disappointed). Word of warning - as tempting as it might be, don't take your shoes off when experiencing the lush grey carpet at the rear stairs....

Ditch the Ivy and hot foot it to the National Gallery Cafe. It's fantastic. Super staff, great menus and friendly service. Eggs Royale here so much better than anywhere else with proper hollandaise.

all of the paintings were very engaging, and there was a lot of variety across the gallery. there were a lot of staff around to answer any questions people had which was beneficial. the expressionism exhibit was my personal favourite as they had van gogh...

If you're in Edinburgh for a few nights I would definitely recommend seeing this art gallery as the pictures are good but it doesn't take very long to look around the gallery so I'd try book to see it in the morning so that way...

I was booked to meet a friend for lunch here after going round gallery. I love soup so had already decided to have the platter which was one of the lighter options. When the food arrived I was absolutely horrified, far, far too much food....

Booked in for a 2.30pm afternoon tea. Other times available as well(3 30, 4.30). Needed to pay a £5 pp 24 hrs in advance, which was deducted from the bill. Arrived are we were shown through into a private room next to the servers. Unlimited...

Questa pinacoteca mantiene gli alti livelli dei poli museali inglesi. Grande la presenza di autori italiani, in particolare, Tiziano, ma anche un'ottima raccolta di impressionisti. Ben organizzata in tutto dagli armadietti per coservare borse ed oggetti alla collocazione delle opere per periodi storici. E' una delle tre cose da non perdere veditando Edinburgo.

Nos reunimos con un grupo de 8 amigos para almorzar en Continis National Gallery Cafe y no volveré ni recomendaré este horrible lugar en el corto plazo.Un amigo se quejó del servicio lento y de ciertas cosas que faltaban en nuestra comida, así que nos preguntó si podíamos tomar café de cortesía. La camarera procedió a preguntarle a su gerente que luego le preguntó al equipo de administración. En este punto, la persona que vino (sin saber si era propietario o no) nos dio una andanada de abuso diciéndonos que no eran un restaurante Michelin de 5 estrellas y que todo lo que hicieron era fresco y era un negocio familiar 5 veces. Si ella hubiera escuchado correctamente, no nos quejaríamos de la comida, sino del servicio, ¡aunque mi cena de pavo estaba tibia!La misma mujer vino por segunda vez y pasivamente agarró agresivamente un plato gratis de pasteles de carne picada con más abusos (los pasteles de carne picada costarían más que el café, pero lo dejaré allí)La misma mujer, por tercera vez, se acercó, se puso de pie en la parte superior de nuestra mesa y nos contó lo interesante que era que solo tenía quejas de grupos de mujeres, nunca hombres y nunca familias. Saw some monumental pictures that I had not imagined I would ever see. Well worth a an hour or twos viewing

Will admitirá que inicialmente entró aquí por curiosidad y para matar un poco de tiempo. Quedó impresionado por la variedad de obras de arte en exhibición. Pasé un par de horas preguntándome y admirándolo. El personal era amable y servicial, pero no dominante. Recomendaría a cualquiera que pase un tiempo explorando y apreciando.

Es un hermoso espacio y colección; Solo estoy decepcionado de no poder verlo todo, ya que actualmente están en construcción. Estoy seguro de que se verá genial cuando hayan terminado. Fue una visita corta ya que solo tienen algunas de sus galerías abiertas pero, como estábamos cansados, fue agradable no pasar demasiado tiempo en un museo.

Loved the Art work of The Amazing Artists Bridget Riley , its definitely worth a visit It costs 15 pounds for adults and 10 pounds if you’re under 25.

The gallery is relatively small but it still has just enough for a one hour visit or so. It’s free too which is great.

Schilderijen van kunstenaren uit verschillende landen, allemaal prachtig. Veel Nederlandse kunstenaars ook, waaronder een Rembrandt zelfportret en een Van Gogh. Het is geen enorm museum dus tenzij je erg lang bij elk werk blijft hangen ben je er in een uurtje, wellicht twee, wel uit.

Could not be more impressed with this Gallery ...absolutely first rank ....Matisse. Degas,Da Vinci ,Gaugin ,Monet ,just a few of the treasures on display . Must not miss this wonderful display of great artists works .

We were impressed with the collections in this gallery. A very special place. Enjoyed all 3 galleries and particularly the walk down the modern gallery. Edinburgh is beautiful.

Also ich bin nicht der grösste Kunst freund aber ich muss sagen den besuch in der National Gallery bedauer ich nicht. Es ist sehr schön das es hir diese einrichtungen mit freiem Eintritt gibt. Es ist auf jeden fall ein besuch wehrt leider wird grade um gebaut im anderen gebäude so das nicht alles gezeigt werden kann aber dennnoch ist es schön und über ne spände freun sie sich auch immer sehr. Nehmt euch ruhig die zeit und schaut rein es ust schön und kostet nix und man ist nie zu alt um was neues aus zu probieren auch wenn man nicht so ein kunst freund ist.

Housed in a magnificent Graeco-Roman style stone building, this cafe services the art gallery as well as the Gardens (I believe). Great selection of snacks and drinks, just what is needed after a walk around the city, winding down to enjoy the artwork.

Visited National Gallery in April 2019 the building was undergoing renovation so lifts were not accessible. Good collection of historical and modern pieces on display. One Van Gough painting was also on display.

Had a nice lunch here. Only had sandwiches and coffee as we had planned dinner for night. Good selection of sandwiches at a reasonable price with a bonus of overlooking the gardens. Service was very good.

Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, all the majors here and some gorgeous Scottish paintings found in the castles.

We enjoyed the collection of art at this gallery and the way it was laid out chronologically. There are some real gems here, including a wonderful Sargent. We also lucked out and saw the special Rembrandt exhibition, which was a fee. The rest.of the museum is free.

This lovely gallery offers a pleasant ambience to view a wide range of traditional art. Free to visit it is easy to find off the Main Street in the city

Wir kamen per Zufall bei der Gallery vorbei und sahen, dass es eine Rembrandt Sonderausstellung hat. Kurzentschlossen gingen wir rein.

We had a quick lunch in the self service part of the National Gallery cafe. There's seating inside and out, with beautiful views out over the Princes Street Gardens back towards Waverley Station.

Un museo no muy grande pero muy interesante, con muy buenas obras de arte, unas pinturas excelentes de pintores excepcionales.

For the second time we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in the cafe. The service is great, the food is excellent (delicious sandwiches, wonderful scones, lovely deserts), the view into Princess Street gardens is stunning.

Siendo un reciente egresado college esta galería fue bastante interesante. Hay un montón de obras de arte y las descripciones de las piezas. La entrada gratis es una ventaja enorme. No comimos en el café en el jardín, pero olía delicioso. Lo pasamos genial y pasamos un poco más de una hora.

Fuimos a la Galería Nacional dos veces, durante el festival, para un almuerzo ligero en ambos días. Fue muy concurrido, pero el servicio fue rápido y eficiente. Realmente disfrutamos de nuestra sopa y la ensalada de salmón. Creo que su secreto es que el restaurante en ambos días fue supervisado por el de ellos mismos. Contini Me pareció muy práctico, por lo que funcionaba tan bien. Me hubiera gustado más grandes galerías elegiría local independiente 13.500 euros para ejecutar sus cafés.

Esta es una galería de arte preciosa, con las obras de arte se muestran muy bien y sin catalogarse. . Especialmente bueno si hay una imagen interesante que hay comentarios sobre el pintor atento y el trabajo junto a la imagen. Me encantó la manera en que nos muestra particularmente las esculturas ubicado en las paredes de la hermosa escalera. Muy inusual. Arriba las pinturas impresionistas se muestran demasiado y son impresionantes.

Restaurant de musée vraiment très agréable, le service est au petit soin et la nourriture est vraiment excellente, ça change du sandwich pourri de la plupart des musées français. On a du choix, c'est moderne et bien présenté, un régal.

Quanto sono belli questi musei...e soprattutto gratis. Al di là delle mostre consiglio la collezione permanente che spazia dal 1400 all'impressionismo. Vale davvero la pena...

Great range of pieces from Scottish works to some of my favourites like Van Gogh. Building is interesting in itself. Check out the back staircase full of busts! Lovely cafe too downstairs.

Non mi è mai capitato di vedere tanti autori importanti e non pagare il biglietto, la galleria è gratis , ci sono esposti dipinti di Raffaello, Tiziano, Monet , Canaletto , Van Gogh, El Greco , ecc . Consigliatissimo

Lo que un museo precioso. Todo parece bien. Las habitaciones están bien exposiciones juntas, las indicaciones son claras y tienen una gran variedad de pinturas de diferentes partes del mundo, de diferentes épocas y en diferentes géneros. Algunas de ellas son muy conocidas. También es gratis y muy céntrico. Que si estás en Edimburgo!

What a collection of ancient works of art... From the 1200s to the 1800s. The Dutch masters on show alone is mental!! The Scottish artists also do very well as do Italian and French. Wonderful collection.

A nice way to spend an hour relaxing away from the busy centre .

Having recently visited and been disappointed by, the London National Gallery I found its Scottish counterpart a refreshing change.

el museo bien vale una visita, atesora una colección impresionante con obras conocidas y otras no tantas, desde la mujer friendo huevos de velázquez, pasando por obras de murillo, el greco...rubens, van dyck, tiziano, cranach, botticelli, vermeer: jesucrito en casa de marta y maría...y obras preciosas de gauguin, y un largo etcétera, que asombrará a amantes del arte y también a curioso. una visita muy recomendable.

This museum is so bright, open, casual and relaxed. It was such a pleasure to experience such a amaxing masterpieces in such a great setting.

Free, spacious and a variety of art...had hoped for some more modern art too but were visiting on our way back to the airport so wasn't a huge disappointment.

Galleria che ricorda l'omonima di Londra... è un po' più piccola ma altrettanto tocca, con uno sviluppo abbastanza cronologico che parte da primo Rinascimento fino al Postimpressionismo! Ci sono molte opere italiane oltre a diverse collezioni nazionali, le spiegazioni sono efficaci mente il personale è sempre pronto a fornire delucidazioni ed incredibilmente sorridente! Oltretutto l'entrata è gratuita... un posto insomma da non perdere e non solo per gli amanti dell'arte pittorica!

Ideal para descansar un poco entre tantas cosas lindas para ver en la Galleria Nacional, buena atencion, lugar muy aseado, rico cafe, buenos precios, estuvo muy bien...

Siamo andati in questa galleria il giorno in cui dovevamo ripartire. L'ingresso è gratuito e in più c'è la possibilità di lasciare i propri bagagli in alcuni armadietti a pagamento. così li abbiamo lasciati li per vedere altre cose della città prima della nostra partenza. il museo è organizzato bene. si passa da una stanza ad un altra ed ogni stanza è numerata.

The National Gallery is by no means the largest art museum you'll find in Britain, but I've got to say it was among the best. I thought they had a wonderful collection for a relatively small museum . . . especially the impressionist section. Add to it that it's free entry and this suddenly becomes a "can't miss" attraction in Edinburgh.

Una gran exposición temporal bien vale la pena ver. Me quedé muy sorprendido. Las clases de la vida del siglo 21 y calle secciones son verdaderamente buenos.

Breakfast on a weekday morning. Big portions, had the Scottish platter, ham cheeses and salad plus relish, this included the often overlooked Aberdeen Butterie. My partner had the haggis roll. Both plates excellent. The Butterie was toasted and nice and crispy, haggis was well sourced, not the cheap stuff, both in agreement it was good value.

As frequent visitors to Edinburgh we popped in for lunch and ordered a national dish called Cullen Skink.......fish with potatoe in a creamy sauce. It took a long time to come but we assumed that would mean it was being freshly prepared. Sadly, the potatoes were undercooked to the point of being inedible. Wisely my wife left hers but being brought up to clear my plate I suffered the indigestion that inevitably comes from undercooked food. It was brought to the attention of staff who were clearly surprised that we were unimpressed. The only action taken was to invite me to put my thoughts in writing on a card brought to the table. No effort was made to rectify the situation on what is clearly overpriced food. The front of house staff are quite charming but I expected a little bit more than charm. There are plenty of other Edinburgh restaurants to choose from. Tourists beware !!

Here you will find the most eminent painters from the middle ages upto the 20th century. You can admire the works of Mediterranean, northen and Scottish authors.

Ingresso gratuito, armadietti a pagamento. Opere buone, alcune molto famose, grande collezione fiamminga. Impossibile perderla se si viene a Edimburgo!

Realmente disfrutamos de nuestra visita aquí, tienen una amplia selección de arte y tuvimos la suerte de ver ejercida y de Glen Monach así como vuelvo a la colección francesa impresionistas. Nos quedamos impresionados con el etiquetado de las diferentes fotos que es muy informativo. . . . La tienda del museo tiene una amplia selección de artículos y el café es excelente para un café o un té o un almuerzo ligero.

Realmente disfrutamos de una relajante (y gratis) mirar en las galerías. Muy interesante y no muy concurrido, especialmente teniendo en cuenta el festival que estaba en su apogeo. Creo que paró una avalancha de gente intentando entrar en cuando empezó a llover, pero no estoy seguro de eso. Volvería en futuras visitas a Edimburgo.

We wanted to see paintings by Scottish artists and we were not disappointed. The museum is well organized by era. There isn't a huge collection, therefore easy to see everything, at a leisurely pace, in 3 hours. As a Canadian I was particularly intrigued by the painting of Niagara Fall, circa 1867. 150 years later the Falls has a very different appearance because of erosion. Free admission for all. No audio guide. However, a very pleasant cafeteria style cafe, with an outdoor patio overlooking the park.

My first visit to Scotland and simply loved the national gallery which consisted of beautiful masterpieces from the past. My favourites were the Monarch of the Glen, Before the performance by Edgar Degas, Pas Me`che by Jules Bastien. Would recommend the place as a must visit at least for few hours. I'd say you'll love it!

We went to the gallery expecting to enjoy the art and dine for lunch elsewhere, but after looking at the menu, decided to give Contini's a try. Wow. Two and a bit hours later, we were paying our bill and it's not because the service was slow- the food was so good - all of it. Really recommend the fish stew and the cheeses (dessert). Unlike so many other places these days, there was no scrimping on waiting staff. The service was great and thank God no-one did the very obvious 'up-sell', now so common and so obvious! No need to up-sell to us. We spent a good amount on our meals because we wanted to. Really can't recommend this wonderful restaurant enough.

Free entrance. This is a perfect activity for a rainy day! Lots of different paintings and we saw a lot of Dutch paintings too which was cool for us.

We ate there on a whim, and found really good food, as well as very lovely natives who asked us about our stay and shared their insights about our country.

The Scottish National Gallery is placed on historic centre of Edinburgh, full of relics and works of art such as sculptures, paintings and etc. You must go there.

Nos encanta Londres. En el viaje anterior no pudimos visitar la National Gallery así que esta vez no podíamos faltar. Nos encantó pero los dos tuvimos la misma opinión, es necesario verla en varios días para disfrutar de sus obras plenamente.
