£8.70 for a small portion of haddock and chips with a drink. The batter was completely soggy. Definitely not a proper fish and chip shop. Such a shame, as the staff seemed very nice. Hygiene around the premises seemed an issue.

Chanced upon Nash's as my twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around this part of town. A good looking chippy, cosy interior and really nice staff. We ordered sausage & chips, service was quick and I must say the meal was top notch ,sausage was especially delicious and the chips so tasty, honestly we couldn't fault the chippy,a quick, unpretentious meal that didn't break the bank. We really enjoyed our meals in here before we moved on and for a first time visit to Nash's we had a great time. Nash's is easy to locate along Merrion Street, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

It does look like it has changed hands :( worse than that the foods completely different batter and all. Had the cod loin :( not like I’d had it on previous visits (i.e not a thick white loin) instead a scraggy fish with tail (didn’t even look like cod loin?). I won’t be going back, gone are the good old days of a traditional f & c replaced with a budget affair that is completely different!

I was looking to have something to eat whilst looking around Leeds about 9pm, when I unmistakenly got the whiff of a chip shop. Having visited Leeds quite a few times and stayed in Vicar Lane Travelodge a number of times, was unaware of a nearby fish shop. The smell led me to Nash,s. No customers in, so ordered fish, chips, curry sauce and cup of coffee.Bit of a wait, but presumed it was the cooking of my order of fish. Sat at a table and a tv with country music videos was playing on the wall. Supper came on crockery plate, with metal cutlery and a mug of coffee with seperate jug of milk and the curry sauce came in a seperate dish too. All hot, clean and no complaints about the meal whatsoever. Total price was £8.50. whilst having my meal some customers for a takeaway called in and a steady stream of orders seem to have gone out the door, maybe from justeat. Will call again. Really nice, thank you.

Went to Nash's yesterday with my mum for our lunchtime fish n chip treat in the beautiful Tudor restaurant upstairs and - WHAT?! - it is no more. We were reduced to sitting in the drab, chilly cafe downstairs and eating fish n chips off polystyrene, and drinking tea out of the same. Fortunately when we asked to swap our plastic cutlery we were given proper knives and forks, shiny and stainless steel (and washable too so they didn't go in the bin with the rest of the polystyrene when we were done!) The TV was on too ... it'd be nice to dine in peace without yet another screen to look at. And it was too loud. I realise when a restaurant is struggling but, as with another great Leeds fish n chips institution, Harry Ramsdens, it's trying to trade on the name but basically trashing the once-great experience. The fish n chips were okay but not as nice as they were in the restaurant upstairs. As long as your expectations are set beforehand it might be okay for some. It's cheap, if not a lot else.

Nashs has been part of Leeds scene for generations. First as a fish and chip restaurant (now closed) it is now reduced to a back door takeaway. Quality was at one time untouchable. Nowadays it's definitely borderline average for fish and chips. To compliment my meal I ordered a battered sausage. I bit into the item. My tastebuds got all mixed up and informed my brain that I had a battered and deep fried cow pat in my mouth. I was ordered by the numbskull in charge to spit it out. It was dark and gloomy to look at. Then I did something I had never done before. I returned with to complain about... a sausage.

Gluten free option is available for battered fish which includes the extra large fish if you are really hungry. Took the opportunity on a whirlwind visit to Leeds, to stop off at Nash's. It was a place we often visited with family when I was younger. Having moved from the city some years ago I wasn't even sure it was still running but very pleased to see it was.A trip down memory lane for me didn't disappoint. Battered fish and chips were very good; food hot and quickly served. Really enjoyed chatting with Helen our waitress. A great Yorkshire welcome. We arrived about 12.30pm. It seemed a little quiet so lacked some ambience from what I remember, but we were relatively early and more customers soon arrived. It was busier from around 1pm.I would have given 5 stars but my reason for marking down were that the batter was not as crisp as it should be on the bottom of the fish and that we were missing paper napkins on our table. Small things and apart from that, can't fault and would definitely return. Thank you for a great lunch.

If you've never been to Nash's in Leeds it's well worth a visit. It is tucked way in the Tudor buildings at the bottom of Merrion Street with a Take Away to the rear and another entrance to the restaurant. I don't eat fish and chips that often but would always come to Nash's as the fish is good, and as stated by other reviews - white flaky haddock beautifully cooked in a light crispy batter... the way I remember it from days long gone. The portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. Spacious seating and the service has been good on occasions when I have visited.

I can't believe I have lived in Leeds for over 53 years and never been here before.I started with a prawn cocktail, straight back to the 70's eh! Okay so it's not haute cuisine but it was a great start. No probs from me.I went for the classic haddock, chips & mushy peas, a match made in heaven. I just went for the standard which was plenty. Cooked in beef dripping, just as they should be. The chips were good but the fish was in a different level. The batter was light, golden and crispy, the fish was flakes of beautiful white haddock. Superb! The place itself is mock Tudor on the outside. The restaurant has parquet floors, leather seats at tables set out in rows with plenty of room between them. The windows are intricate and leaded. It's all good.Service was very good.If you have never tried fish fried in beef dripping you could do much worse than visit Nash's.

My family used to regularly visit this restaurant. We hadn't been for a few years, so we decided to go before the Theatre one evening, just like we used to.The building hasn't changed and the restaurant still has that olde Tudor style that is part of its charm. The food was average. This place is badly let down by it's staff. The customer service is shocking. My Mum's chips were hard, so we asked for new ones. The waiter didn't apologise, just radioed to get fresh chips. A bowl was brought out and practically thrown at us. No acknowledgement. The place wasn't very busy (3 other tables in the restaurant) so staff didn't have much to do. They all congregated behind the bar and I caught several of them staring at us whilst we ate. There was a table in who weren't native English speakers, but nonetheless spoke English well. The guests ordered food in a heavily accented way, but could still be understood. However the waitress seemed to realky struggle picking up the word "Hamburger" She also confused the table by referring to Fish and chips as "Specials" Small points perhaps, but it just added to the overall mood of the visit. Not very good! It's a shame, as the place has such history and nostalgia. I'm sure with a bit of staff training (or the right staff) this place could be great again.

Came here today for the first time in years, in fact both my husband and I thought it had closed. My husband being a Leeds Loiner used to come here all the time many many years ago. He said it was always packed out, well I can assure you that today it was extremely quiet. New on the menu was a fish buttie, it sounded so good that we both ordered it. WOW !!!! Everything was beautifully presented on a board, the fish was huge presented in a bap, on top of mixed leaves, a slice of beefsteak tomato and gherkins. In one corner were a stack of onion rings, in another corner a pail of chips nestled between a coup of garlic majo and some salad. Hubby polished off the lot but sad to say it beat me and I did leave some. I would highly recommend it and would certainly have it again. Our only gripe was the service and the young man who took our order. We asked for a pot of tea for 2 when he asked when did we want it we replied straight away, also requested a glass of tap water. We waited and waited and in the end my husband called over to the waitress and asked again for our drinks. We both agreed God help them if they were busy. As well as us there were only 3 other tables occupied. However this did not deter us from leaving a tip, nor would it deter us from coming again or recommending it to others. Nash,s is now in a part of Leeds where apart from being near the Grand very little is going on. It's no where near the Trinity Center where there are a number of restaurants or the newly opened Victoria Center. Come on Nash,s you need to advertise and promote your business, otherwise am sorry to say one day we will go to Leeds to find you have truly closed down. As my hubby would say, end of an era.

My husband and I have been to Nash's restaurant on several occasions over the past few years and always enjoyed the haddock, chips and mushy peas. The decor is old fashioned but in keeping with the character of the building. Each time we have been there have only been a handful of diners, sometimes we have outnumbered the staff. The waitress we had this time was polite and the service was fast. Nash's used to be on the Tastecard deal (2 for 1 or 50% off on certain days) and this was well worth it. Since it came off Tastecard, whilst we don't mind paying full price (used to be around £9 per meal), our bill came to £25 including two drinks (one soft drink). The fish and chips are now around £10 each. This seems a lot compared to other places (Harry Ramsden's is cheaper or around the same price). It's a shame as the restaurant is so quiet whenever we go in and I have a feeling the price of the food is the reason. The takeaway is cheaper I believe and this is probably what we will opt for next time we come.

Myself and my wife visited Nash's for the first time on Saturday lunchtime. The setting is amazing. It is a 18th century building with many of the original features still in place. We ordered Haddock, chips and mushy peas. We were served very quickly and everything was hot as you would expect. The fish was superb. Succulent and white and cooked perfectly. The batter on the fish was also perfect, very crisp and hot. The chips were a beautiful golden brown. Crisp on the outside and light and fluffy inside. My only complaint (if it can be called that) is the mushy peas come in a small container on your plate. I prefer mine on the plate. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We went for a pre-theatre meal. As a vegetarian obviously it wasn't the ideal choice and I wasn't expecting much. I didn't go for the single vegetarian meal (spinach lasagne) but had chips, salad and bread & butter instead. The salad was good, but the chips were dreadful - given that this is a fish & chip restaurant, you'd think they'd get the chips right! They were pale and soggy and definitely needed a refresh in the fryer. Worst was the bread & butter. Cheap at 30p a portion, but that's the best you can say about it. There were three triangles of brown bread which were fine. The three triangles of white bread were stale and leathery. The waitress said this was because the plate had sat under a light before being brought to the table (why?!) but clearly this wasn't true in any case - if it had been, the butter would have melted, and all the bread would have been affected, not just the white bread. No, it was just stale! Overall, disappointing.

We went into Leeds in the run up tobChristmas to see a concert. We decided to have a meal beforehand. Nash's fit the bill perfectly. The fish and chips were excellent as was the sausage. We both had puddings and they were proper puddings, not a fancy plate of nothing. All the food was delicious and we had a couple of drinks too plus a cuppa. Great value as well. The waitresses were very friendly and informative. Loved this place. I have not visited since I was a child but will certainly be back soon.

I have been coming here for thirty or more years and have always been more than happy. I came here today with a view for booking a party for over thirty. I'm sorry to say I didn't book the party and this was down to the disgusting attitude of the young waitress whose behaviour was totally disrespectful. Ask this waitress for something bringing to you in this restaurant and be prepared for her to slam down down items she is carrying in temper and you will get a tut and a moody response. A gentleman also served us along with another waitress and both of those were completely the opposite...they were extremely polite and going out of their way to help. I saw the young waitress tut when asked for the bill by another two occupants. Nashes....what on earth are you doing employing a girl who behaves in such a way. You will lose old loyal customers like myself and new customers. She has lost you a sitting of thirty guests because of her attitude. The fish and chips however were great as always and I love the decor in this place. It always calms me and it looked great decorated and ready for christmas.

Had booked a table for 5 but were squeezed around a table for 4 with an extra mat, as there was only 1 other person in we asked if we could have a bigger table, they said no as the only big table was booked and it might get busy later and the table was for 5, eventually another waitresss pushed 2 tables together. The fish was soggy and the chips were lukewarm and the portion size was small. At no point did anyone ask if the food was ok. By time we had finished the place was still less than half full. The rudeness of the staff means we will not return which is a shame as this used to be a great place.

Visited a couple of months ago and fish was thin and dry. The chips were cold and hard. Mentioned it to the waitress who said we should have sent it back. In Leeds again recently and thought we should try again as usually so good. Bad move on our part. Again fish was very thin, chips hard and the mushy peas were an incredible dark green and solid, not at all appetising. Sent it back and guess what, fish now thin and dry, same chips which actually floated in the vinegar and same mushy peas. Left most of it and told the waitress that it was not much better. Her arrogant reply was that I was the only complaint they had had all day. Not strictly true as the couple adjacent to us commented on the thin, dry fish but did not mention it when asked. Noticed as we left that the food, especially the peas looked a lot better so maybe it was the wrong time of day. However won't be going back as there are plenty of fish restaurants in Leeds hopefully with better food and service.

This was honestly the worst fish and chip restaurant I've ever been too. The place looks nice and old fashioned but that's where the niceness ended. They give you complimentary bread, which is stale. It feels crusty, not the way bread should be. Me and my father both shared a starter of deep fried calamari and a main course of haddock and chips. I took a bite into the calamari and the whole thing fell apart. I've had deep fried calamari before, and prior to going to this restaurant, I absolutely adored it. I've now been put off for life. The calamari was over cooked and stringy. It was so chew that I didn't even want to swallow it. I then moved onto the haddock and chips, which honestly wasn't all that. The fish on the inside felt a bit dry around the edges. The chips were okay and the mushy peas were mediocre. I only ate a small amount of the food but when I got home I felt so sick that I couldn't get to sleep till 2 in the morning. Don't bother going here unless you want a bout of food poisoning.

Wife and I went to Leeds for the day 24 June 2015. Had looked up fish and chip restaurants on the internet, and decided that we would give Nash's a try. Really glad we did. It was nice to sit in real seats that weren't plastic and bolted to the floor. We waited in the snug, for a few minutes whilst a table was prepared for us. The service was first class and the fish & chips were excellent. It certainly is value for money. We've been to quite a few fish and chip restaurants that have been quite a bit dearer and nowhere as good as Nash's. We are planning another day out in Leeds just so we can go back to Nash's.

I just love this restaurant! Fish & chips always delicious. I have gluten free batter. It is always light and crisp. They do a very good dessert menu with a gluten free choice. The staff are always efficient and friendly.Flight of stairs to climb into a wonderful olde worlde brown furniture leaded window paradise! If you're lucky you may see actors from the nearby theatre. Such a popular venue.

I visited yesterday with a family group ranging from a baby to senior citizens. We all enjoyed the fish and chips, which were red hot and cooked to order. My grandma took me to Nash's when I was little and I was there with my Mum, my daughter and my two grandchildren! A family tradition which I'm sure we'll continue!

I don't often eat fish and chips but I walk past this restaurant everyday and felt like I had to give it a go. It's very centrally located with some great bars around it for afterwards. Inside is surprisingly nice, feels more like an old pub than a restaurant. I would assume this is fairly obvious but if you don't like fish, don't eat here, there is very little on the menu other than some variation of fish and chips. But what they do, they do well. We all enjoyed our meals, portions are very generous (I couldn't finish mine and that does not happen often) and well priced. The staff were all nice, and served us quickly and with no fuss. As I said, I don't eat fish often but this was a nice change, highly recommended.

My Mum and I went to Nash's for lunch yesterday before going to the Grand Theatre. Although the restaurant was really busy we were served really quickly and both ordered the senior/shopper small classic haddock and chips. The food was as good as my two previous visits.... the only negative part was that we didn't receive the bread and butter or tartare sauce which comes as part of the meal. Other than that, another really enjoyable lunch.

We must have gone on a bad day because the fish and chips we had at lunch time were just average or below. The decor needs TLC. I think the owners should visit Whitby's Trenchers or Magpie cafe for some inspiration. I would rather pay more and eat better quality in comfortable surroundings.

A party of four of us visited Nash's restaurant (above their takeaway fish and chip shop downstairs) just before Christmas. We pre-booked although as we arrived at lunchtime opening the restaurant wasn't too busy. Nash's had a big Christmas tree up and it looked very festive. There were some other lovely decor touches, original Whitby fisherman's sowester and boots, and, on the way to the ladies, a wall covered with writing from diners going back decades. This is a famous, established local restaurant and for good reason. The service was impeccable, as I often say in my reviews, what I'm looking for is attentive but not overbearing service. I want the waiters to be there when I need them, but not to hover. The food was fantastic, my starter of spring rolls was lovely, then for main had fish and chips and it was perfect, the batter on the fish was meltingly crisp and the fish fresh. My mother-in-law had the cheesecake for dessert and said it was wonderful (made on the premises.) Well worth a visit, or if you're in a rush, try the takeaway downstairs.

Had meal recently before trip to the theatre. Meal was fine, though the smaller pensioner fish had rather more batter than fish. However, anyone may order the smaller portion, which is a point in the restaurant's favour. The building itself needs some tlc.

Yesterday my wife and I went to the theatre in Leeds and, as is our custom, we then visited Nash's to experience their fantastic fish, Chips and mushy peas; the thin, crispy batter is definitely for the aficionado. I'm sure that all the superlatives have been used to the point of abuse to praise this restaurant which is located in what was once a private school and should be visited to see the existing architectural features so I will not reiterate them.I will simply say, " Go to Nash's" and if you haven't time to stay and eat then go to the Chippy downstairs and take some home.

We had not booked and this seemed to annoy the staff as they had to make some effort to accommodate our party of ten. The restaurant was no where near full but it would have taken effort to seat us together. We were offered two separate tables. As we had not all arrived, we pulled up an extra chair on the end of the biggest table. 'No!' Shouts the waitress rudely across the restaurant. Despite the restaurant being very spacious and the extra chair blocking nothing, this was a 'fire hazard'. She did actually apologise, but as other tables quickly left, I think she could have made an effort to seat us together. We were served at different times and as we were soon the only ones in the restaurant, the whole team stood staring at us, waiting for us to leave. When some of us showed nhs cards to get the discount, at first they were told they couldn't use them. This changed to - they had to pay separately. The tip tin was rattled at us as we left. As if! Customer service is as important as the quality of your food. Some of your staff need a refresher course.

Went into Nash's of Leeds today for a fish and chip lunch. We got the Pensioners portion which includes bread and butter but not tea. The fish was very thin and unusually, the fish was very lightly cooked and the batter was soggy. It was not a success and at £19.00 for two was not value for money. We have had pensioners portions in other Fish and Chip restaurants especially around Otley which will leave these standing.

We ate here - as it seems most people do - before going to the theatre. There are two entrances - one off the main road up a carpeted 1930's style staircase, and the other up a side street past the back of the fish fryer. The decor is Old And Past It, and is crying out for a fat injection of cash to make an attempt to drag the restaurant into the 21st century. But we were not there to look at a worn carpet - we were there to eat. This is a Fish and Chip Restaurant - and t does it brilliantly. The food was first class - crisp delicious chips, white fresh haddock and all the trimmings. Tea bread and butter tartar sauce and mushy peas - all were delightful. There are several other dishes on the menu too, and lovely hot steamed puddings! The staff are warm and friendly - and fast. So forget the first paragraph of this review - because the food is is what it's all about. Not chairs and carpets! Just go and enjoy!

I was in Leeds with my Daughter, & as we both love "proper' fish & chips, decided to give Nash,s a whirl. It is a very old building, which didn,t bother us.I was using the Hi life card, & showed it to the waitress, with no problem. The service was great, very prompt & efficient. We had traditional Haddock & chips, & mushy peas, bread & butter. & tea for 2. Everything was delicious! We both were stuffed to the hilt, but wanted a dessert! we had lemon drizzle & choc chip sponge with custard, which was also delicious! The whole bill was less than 20 quid! All in all,it was a fabulous experience, which we would highly recommend! SHEILA &JODIE

Have been wanting to try this place for years after being a big fish and chip fan and knowing this is a Leeds institution but it was just a very odd experience. The restaurant is entered via a back street (rather than off the main road), up a dark staircase which then takes you to a huge old fashioned dark and on this occasion almost deserted old fashioned restaurant where we were greeted by a not overly friendly man. Both the gentleman and the waitress looked like they really didn't want to be there who wouldn't raise a smile or enter into any conversation at any point which just made the experience quite uncomfortable. It's a shame as the fish and chips, dessert etc were really good but it was just let down by the odd atmosphere. So to be the fair the food was faultless and the desserts were really good so it may be a totally different meal with different staff and more customers but I don't think I'll personally return.

If it's eat in good old fashioned fish and chips you're after then this is still the place to go when in Leeds. Nash's has been in the city for ages and the quality is always good. Very fresh fish and homemade chips, good choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and desserts, if you can manage one. Quite a large restaurant and like the way they spread the customers out rather than all crammed in on corner for ease of service. Take away downstairs with a small, basic eating area. Well worth a visit.

Despite being in Leeds for quite a few years now, I'm sorry to say I've only recently discovered Nash's - but now that I've found it, I'm fast making up for that.My most recent visit was for a pre-theatre meal, as it's so conveniently located just around the corner from Leeds Grand, where 12 of us were well taken care of by the attentive team. The decor of the restaurant exactly matches the exterior of this mock Tudor building, and it's a lovely place to relax and enjoy your dining. There's quite a range of food, for those like myself who aren't fish fans - so I found myself tucking into double jumbo battered sausages while some companions chose shepherds pie. For those who like their fish, check out the XXL Haddock dish, which could easily be confused for a whale on your plate.I've already planned my next visit, which is only next week.. And have an additional date in mind for next month!

Feeling peckish my friend decided he wanted fish & chips, we were on the Headrow so l thought of Nash's even though l've never eaten there. The reason for that is the business & alley approach looks so unwelcoming. And it did again...7 large green general waste dustbins right outside, rubbish everywhere. Now l know this is not the fault of Nash's but it's plain off-putting, they could screen it off for a small outlay. Secondly l said to my pal "lt's shut", everything about it led me to thinking that, even with an "open" flyer on the door, l was amazed the door opened when l pushed it. Oh oh, totally empty, no food in the fryers, really strange. The woman behind the counter was great, she explained that it was cooked fresh & wouldn't take long. 2 fish & chips were ordered and tbh l was not expecting much. I was wrong, the fish was really good and the chips fine & plentiful, mushy peas ok if a bit watery. The only negative was the tomato sauce, it was terrible, orange & cheap. Whilst we were eating 2 other customers arrived, so 4 in probably 40 minutes there. There is something wrong here, the food was good, the woman friendly & efficient but it is devoid of any atmosphere or decent furnishings, to me it looks like totally wasted potential. I'd probably give it another try, maybe l caught it on an unusually quiet day, but still, please make an effort on the approach & frontage to make it more welcoming, l'm sure it'd make huge difference.

We thought to come for dinner as the food is usually okay but today was outrageous! We ordered and didn’t receive our drinks for 30 minutes. Then we had to wait a further 1hr30minutes for our starters to arrive. We ordered Garlic bread that came freezing and chicken taco, chicken tacos on discription from your menus! Include “mayo and palle de galo” I got a taco with 2 tiny chicken strips and what looked like just leaves. Then we had to wait a further 45 minutes for our mains. We voiced our concerns to the bar staff and they explained we could have a “one free drink or pudding” for the long delay and explained they were really busy in the kitchen despite only having approximately 10 people in the pub.
