Nant Ddu Lodge Restaurant in Merthyr Tydfil

Was told this venue did an amazing Sunday Dinner, so my friend booked us in during my stay to South Wales. On arrival we was shown to our lovely located table. We was served with the menu and asked what we would like to drink. We both opted to try the new cider, which I must say was very nice. We ordered our meals. Starters was stunning especially the Leek & Potato Soup. Our mains was equally stunning, both the Lamb and Pork was cooked to perfection, biggest highlight was the roast potatoes. Unbelievable!! A big thank you must go out to all the chefs, Jack the new waiter, great job buddy and Lowri. Thank you for a beautiful Sunday Lunch 10/10

Improputu visit after trying to climb Penyfan. Stopped for lunch after seeing other people sat outside. Lots of parking. Went into the bistro bar area to order and grab a drink. Staff were friendly and welcoming. If we’re being honest the toilets inside are a bit of a throw back to the 1980s (!) but they were clean and tidy. Sat outside as good weather, and food arrived really quickly by another friendly waitress. A really good value lunch. Both had sandwiches and it was accompanied by a good side salad plus chips, or crisps, making it a substantial lunch for us.

So pleased to see the Nant Ddu back as it was a few years ago. Haven’t visited in a while as our last experience was underwhelming to say the least. Thought we’d give it another go as it has always been a favourite choice of ours over the years. So glad we did, we could tell as soon as we entered things had changed for the better. The bar area was busy and bustling with casual diners which is how it was a few years back. We had a table booked in the bistro which was equally busy and the heating was on this time creating a lovely warm welcome. The menu was a perfect combination of old favourites and some new interesting dishes too - it was difficult to choose! The service was impeccable and the food exceeded our expectations. So pleased to see the linen napkins and decent cutlery back! Will definitely be returning more often now.

Not been here for a good few years and happy to report that the food was absolutely delicious. Each course was perfect and the menu was even better than the one online with more exciting, tasty options. Lovely service too even though it was absolutely packed. Well done the Nant Ddu!

Never have a bad meal here, always fresh and quality food Staff are lovely, helpful polite and professional Fish and chips is always a favourite of ours, so fresh and beautiful tasting fish. Current desert menu is also amazing especially the chocolate beetroot pudding with cherry sorbet gorgeous! Quality wine list too. Thank you all staff

We made a reservation through the Open Table App for a table for four, for Easter Sunday lunch. We live quite nearby, but had not visited the Nant Ddu Lodge for quite some time. On arriving we made our way along the corridor to the Restaurant and were warmly greeted by Matthew and shown to our table alongside a window with views of the gardens. Our wine order was efficiently taken and our bottle was delivered and was spot on (Blass Chardonnay), so nice in fact we ordered a second bottle! We had also had a pitcher of water for the table. The Sunday Lunch menu offered great choice. My starter was a smoked haddock 'scotch egg' topped with home-pickled vegetables and served on a curry emulsion with dill oil. Other family members had prawn cocktail or garlic mushrooms on bruchetta. We each had roasts (2 Welsh lamb and 2 pork). Main courses were nicely presented with a good selection of well prepared vegetables and new potatoes. For dessert I had Turkish delight creme brulee with chocolate dipped strawberries, strawberry sorbet and creme chantilly. Other family members tucked into sticky toffee pudding which was served with a shard of honeycomb. Nice seasonal touches included our napkins tied with a ribbon to resemble bunnies-ears and a small 'nest' of mini chocolate easter eggs and a vase of fresh Spring flowers at the centre of the table. Three courses are just £26, giving superb value for money. In all, an inventive bistro menu, in a charming setting at the heart of the Brecon Beacons, with attentive service. We will certainly be coming back time and time again !

The food was good but the dining area was freezing cold. My husband asked if he could close the door and the waitress played to the room in her explanation of why she couldn’t close the door. She was extremely unhelpful and I ended up leaving most of my meal because I am recovering from lung cancer and the cold air was going on my chest. Poor service.

An underwhelming experience. The bistro lacks atmosphere, furnishings a worn and it could do with a makeover. Evening menu was limited and main courses were over priced for the quality. We got new potatoes that were hards and undercooked. Deserts were great. Overall disappointing & wouldn’t return or recommend to others.

We visited the Nant Ddu Bistro restaurant on 29th. May 2023 for the first time since lockdown. We like this particular place because of it’s beautiful setting and pleasant atmosphere. The staff were efficient and pleasant and the food was ok but nothing spectacular for the price charged. The negative part of my review is that the prices on the online menu for the Nant Ddu are cheaper than the actual prices now being charged. This is very misleading and needs updating. I did mention it to the young man taking the payment. The prawn cocktail starter was £8 and not £7: The sirloin steak was £29.00 and not £26.00. And the Pork loin was £20.00 and not £18.00. This particular meal was therefore £6.00 more expensive than we thought it would be. I checked online again the day after and as yet it has not been updated! Thought the food was rather overpriced to be honest.

Certains plats bons, d’autres très décevants Et surtout, le tout beaucoup trop lent : 45 minutes pour avoir les entrées puis encore 30 minutes entre l’entrée et le plat ! Cela nous a fait renoncer au dessert… Nous avions prévu de dîner plusieurs fois dans ce restaurant puisque nous logions à l’hôtel : nous avons finalement décidé de dîner ailleurs les autres soirs et nous ne l’avons pas regretté

I treated my girlfriend to an overnight spa experience for her birthday. Her spa treatments were booked in for 1500hrs but we arrived at 1100hrs and had use of all the leisure facilities. We used the swimming pool sauna steam room and Jacuzzi and these were not overcrowded and were clean and of a high standard. As part of the spa offer we had 10 pound each allowance off lunch items and 25 pound each off evening meal items. After a few hours use if leisure facilities we took lunch and the restaurant/bistro was welcoming staff were very warming and helpful and food portions were excellent and food piping hot. My girlfriend had her treatments and As I didn't fancy mine they gave some if my time to her so she had extra treatments which was great. She said that the spa facility was great and the staff excellent and professional. For our evening meal we had the lamb shoulder and it was truly one of the best lamb dishes we have tried. Dessert was also great. Room was fantastic size with great river view and size of bed was massive room was clean also. We had a complementary breakfast in morning before checking out and this again was of high standard. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay we would recommend the spa packages to others as good value and will be back for more. If I had to just give a little constructive criticism it's that the carpets in the main hallways are dated threadbare and stained. Carpets in rooms were fine. If they could replace these carpets then I couldn't find fault with this very welcoming gem of a spa hotel

Stayed here for one night. The evening meal and breakfast were great and there’s a lovely relaxed vibe. But the bedrooms are SERIOUSLY disappointing. The carpet was stained, the sofa “pleather” had big worn patches, and the bathroom smelled strongly of drains. Colleagues said their rooms were damp and musty and similarly tired. A big shame.

ROOM... quite dissapointed with room especially bathroom which was very dated and no stand up shower only a hose type one, room was outside main building which we pehaps had as we booked a package deal. SPA.. this was great, pool spacious, sauna did as it should and jacuzzi was lovely, changing rooms need a little bit of attention which lets the rest of it down. My wife had a hot stones massage which she said was lovely and treatment room very clean. FOOD...this was outstanding quality, great service from bar staff and waiters. We had lamb which fell apart, breakfast was beautiful. Overall a great place, great staff only thing that lets it down is the outer rooms nos 14-18.

The room........doesnt look like the pics and there was no bath as stated which dissapointed me as i was looking forward to a long soak in a bubble bath stayed there last night in the execuitive suite it wasnt a good night sleep if im honest the matress was hard and not worth the money paid . The spa ....ok i was expecting big things as ive never been to the spa before and seen the pics must be pics of it when its been cleaned or brand new the jaquzzi needs maintenance done on it its not very bubbly and the head rests are all wobble and the drainage around needs a good clean....the steam room door kept opening so the steam was excaping but when it was pulled shut tight it would stay shut that was nice the poolside floor needs a good scrub as you could see the dirt around it the whole spa needs attention and a good clean. The food.... we came here for a meal back before covid think it was 2018 and it was amazing and we said we will go again and when we had food this time it was amazing aswel so i cant fault that at all nothing to say about it...the chairs had dippened and all underneath a few resteraunt chairs needs repairing but as far as the food goes 5* all day long.

What a lovely hotel where everything is done professionally. The staff are wonderful. The massage, the relaxing pool with jacuzzi and steam room/sauna. The food is perfect. This was our second stay and we will definitely be back soon.

This beautiful Hotel is in need of a deep clean and ultimately a total renovation. The staff and evening meal were excellent, the breakfast was about standard but the room we stayed in was grubby, the bathroom however, should be condemned and was brought to the attention of the lady at reception, with no apology just "I'll get maintenance to take a look"! The toilet was leaking and had rotted the floor, it was spongy and soaked, underneath the vinyl flooring. This was stained heavily after weeks of not being addressed. The sink was crazed and cracked, among many other faults too numerous to mention. We were also told to use the towels from the room for the spar, as they were cutting back on laundry! All the chairs, tables and carpets have seen better days. The steam and sauna rooms need attention and the pool surroundings and changing rooms really need a steam clean, also showers and plumbing need replacing with new. The hot tub was out of service. This Hotel has great potential but I fear has gone beyond rescue without the intervention of substantial investment. It makes me very sad to write this review, please accept it as constructive criticism and get an action plan to at least tackle issues that only require a little bit of elbow grease and minimal investment!

We had a absolutely fantastic stay. Me and my husband traveled down from north wales the other week at the beginning of December, and decided to stay here over the weekend. Me and my husband are both first language welsh and prefer/ more comfortable speaking welsh over english. When we went down for our evening meal on the Saturday night, one of the young girls who told us her name was Lowri by luck happened to bring over our starters and realised that we were welsh speakers ( as that was what we were talking in). She was more than amazing, she spoke welsh to us the entire night and made us feel more than comfortable, she made sure everything for us was taken care of and that we were happy. It was honestly lovely just to hear and see the language being spoken by younger people and seeing how open she was to adapt to serve us and speak welsh to us and make us feel comfortable made our entire stay, and honestly she made our stay fab. When we went down for breakfast on the sunday morning she recognised us and come over and spoke to us for 2 minutes and took our order and the service was impeccable . I believe all of the staff deserve praise for their hard work and effort and they really are all lovely people. The food on top of everything was immaculate, not too pricey but on the higher end, but was absolutely worth the price we payed. Rooms could use a bit of tlc and a little revamp but other than that absolutely amazing.

My wife and I last came to the Nant Dudu Lodge thirty years ago. Chicken curry, chips and rice. Well I’m very happy to say that it was every bit as enjoyable as we remember. The staff here are wonderful. The food bountiful and the price very reasonable and a log fire to warm the winter. We won’t wait another 30 years

Called into this place for a Sunday lunch. Normally a pretty good place to eat but if you're a vegetarian don't bother coming here on a Sunday When asked for a vegetarian lunch I was told they couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be animal fat in the roast potatoes. Stayed for one night and had a meal in the bistro restaurant. Fabulous! Had prawn cocktail to start and my wife had pate. Best I’ve ever had. We both had fillet steak which was stunning, cooked to perfection. Followed up by sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake which was just divine. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for top drawer food in a relaxed environment. Great service from the restaurant staff and plenty of time between courses. Well worth a visit.

First time here since lockdown lifted.It was a very hot evening and we had to eat outside!The starters of pate and prawn cocktail were fine.My Wife's chicken main was ok, but my curry was just large lumps of rubbery chicken with no sauce at all!It would appear the Chef had plenty of chicken but had ran out of sauce.I've had this dish before, but it wasn't nice this time at all!

I have just tucked into the Mother's Day take away dinner and can not describe how amazing the dinner was!The presentation and standard was out of this world and I have had to have a rest before my desert.Thank you so much for making this Mother's Day one I will not forget.

Went to the nant ddu on the 18th March 2020 at 15:00 and went to the bar to order food and drinks. After waiting 30 minutes and walking the entire building to find a member of staff and even knocking on the kitchen door entrance... I had no answer to any member of staff and no service! Considering Such high star rating, they should be ashamed of the service that was provided, non excitant that was.. due to that left with no order.

Went with friends for evening meal to celebrate 80th Birthday. Quick service in tha bar - go for the Gammon Steak!!! - Great value.Lopvely service, friendly staff - just right!

My wife and I met up with 4 other couples from work. Really friendly staff who worked so hard and always with a smile on their faces. The food was superb. A disco was put on and plenty of dancing. What more can you ask for. The bedroom was very comfortable. The breakfast was great.

Have eaten here twice in the last two weeks and on both occasions it was good. Had a family meal the middle of December with everybody having different dishes which were all excellent, Hake, Steak & Pork it's not cheap but the food is good so worth paying for.Yesterday returned again, it was very busy lunchtime but again we were served promptly and can highly recommend the fish finger sandwich.The staff are a credit to the place and did not stop.

As usual an epic set of meals! The pate starters were fantastic as was the lamb and chicken main meals! Compliments to the duty Chef and the lovely bar/waitress Staff. A wonderful place to eat!

We had dinner here on the first evening of our four-night stay. The menu is interesting and ambitious, with several Welsh highlights. I chose Welsh rarebit with crab (!) as my starter, and the combination worked for me. My main-course chicken supreme with Stilton was excellent. (Yes, it might have been pre-prepared commercially, but it was still excellent.) My wife was full of praise for her belly pork main course. Prices are reasonable.

Had dinner here tonight with my partner. Very expensive for what we had and the quality was poor. My partner had the lamb, he said that was nice and I had the plaice fillet which was tasteless. £17 for each main which had no veg!!! Pet hate of mine having to order veg at an extra cost!! Wine was overpriced... £8 for a large white wine!!!

Visited the Nant Ddu with my partner for an evening meal. We haven’t been here for a few years, so thought we’d return. Entered the car park - surprised to see it so quiet. This was a worry as when I used to visit it was always busy, no matter what day of the week.

Stunning 3 course Meal, good choice menu at reasonable prices, very polite and efficient staff, open fire and decent drinks. Cannot wait to return

Stayed here as a holiday after our holiday, I booked the executive suit the room was beautiful nice living room, balcony, huge bedroom and TV and the bathroom was lovely. The pool is lovely it slightly heated and the jacuzzi need to be fixed as not all jets work and some seats are better than other, the food in the evening was ok, my steak was tough and chewy like it had been frozen, my partner had the lamb which was lovely, the cooked breakfast was nice in the morning !!

I must say not having been here since I was a child I was pleasantly surprised how lovely our evening was. Wednesday night meal the restaurant was fairly full and had a good atmosphere. The food was fantastic very good quality. I had the prawns and the lamb my partner had black pudding and the chicken. Service was good too. Thoroughly enjoyed x

Not quite sure what to make if the experience but probably not inclined to return. The room was fine but to call it a deluxe or exec seemed to be wrong ie rather than a large room it was in fact 2 rooms with an interconnecting door.

Had lunch here after our spa day and treatment. Baguettes were delicious and came with salad and potato chips. More than enough after a relaxing morning in the spa area.

Called in here for a quick lunch in the bar area. The staff were friendly and food was served promptly. But the entrance, hall and the bar areas are really dated and need sprucing up! The tables were covered with disposable/plastic type table clothes which made you feel like you were in a time warp. The cushions on the benches/seating were very badly stained. Toilets also very dated and needed redecorating.

In relatively standard pub surroundings you’re served up superbly flavoured and cooked dishes. Portions sizes are good and the chips are immense. Staff are friendly and helpful, you don’t wait too long for the food either. Thoroughly recommend! We had the lamb and chicken supreme. Enjoyed them a lot!

Called in on Sat evening. Sat in the bar area which is my favourite place to be seated. The staff were very accommodating and the service was very quick.

Having come few times a year for many years I have to say I dont know how..but it keeps getting better! Beautiful food , try the faggots! Well kept welsh beer, penderyn, amazing friendly helpful staff from reception to bar to restaurant, wife loves the spa. Amazing location the ultimate getaway. Recommend the suite 36 cant fault it, it may not be the Ritz but all the better for it. Great for bike park Wales, mountain running chilling. Went here with my Mum last Saturday as a treat on our way to Merthyr from Brecon. It was a boiling hot day and it looked very inviting to sit outside. There were nice umbrellas over the tables but in the end we decided it looked More comfortable indoors. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Service was quick and the food was tasty.

Good food although little over priced. Very busy so unless get there early be prepared to wait for table. Found atmosphere bit dull but bar staff very friendly and be lovely on nice evening as very pleasant garden area.

I had dinner in the pub, which was surprisingly empty when I arrived - I had been told it’s usually busy. The food menu was quite extensive. I opted for herb crusted hake with freshly cooked vegetables on the side. The hake, which arrived on a bed of spinach, was tasty. Service was prompt if not overly friendly. However the place is let down by an extremely uninspiring interior that completely lacks any sort of character. The wooden bench I sat on was uncomfortable as no cushions were provided. Prices were somewhat steep compared with other places I tried in the local area. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here again.

My husband has eaten in here a couple of times when he has been in Wales working. Tonight as I was in Wales we went for dinner. The food was delicious - couldn’t fault anything. Hubby had rack of lamb and I had the slow cooked lamb - totally scrumptious. The sticky toffee pudding was yummy too. Worth visiting and would eat there again if we were in the area.

My Wife and I were in Brecon and on our way Home, we called in for a late Lunch.

Stayed for dinner and breakfast. An amazing menu using local produce. I cannot fault the staff who were very courteous and friendly. A great experience A+.

Stayed on a Sunday, viewed menu before arrival,Sunday lunch menu and bistro menu. Had a table booked for 8 pm to us that’s not lunch time,no times stated online or on menu in restaurant so had to make do from the Sunday lunch one. After ordering food noticed loads cobwebs and dust on the light fittings,curtain poles and curtains themselves. Food was delicious by the way. The dinning area needs a good deep clean.

Spent an overnight spa break here recently.

Came here for my partners birthday meal. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation but were still seated immediately. The dining room is nicely decorated and the gardens well kept. All staff members were very attentive and friendly. The food was absolutely gorgeous. Both of us had a pork dish and none of it was dry. The portions were generous. All in all a fantastic meal out. If I am in the area again, I will definitely return

We have been visiting the Nant ddu lodge for many years and it had never disappointed with excellent food, service and atmosphere. The recently updated menus is a nice change however the disposable paper table clothes are not a welcomed change, they really cheapen the feel compared to the original uncovered tables that they cover. It had a much more traditional and welcoming feel previously...

The restaurant food was lovely. The spa changing room showers and toilet were grubby, around the pool side was a small amount of loungers so couldn’t accommodate everyone on the spa day so little space to relax.

On the mad Rugby weekend just gone, my Wife and I had lunch here!

Delicious freshly cooked food, accommodating staff, lovely coal fires in the bars and nice restaurant area. Recommended

Birthday meal. Good food but a little pricey. Good range of choices. Choice of potatoes. Veg come as extra side dishes. Meal for 4 with 2 starters, 2 beers and 3 cold drink came to approx £90

Excellent facilities and staff. Food tip-top. Beautiful area. What more can I say? Highly recommended to all.

Fabulous food and very good general service, but the speed of service really let it down. Understand that it was busy at the time but to have to wait an hour between courses is a disappointment.

Beautiful Sunday Lunch in idyllic surroundings, even Storm Freya couldn’t put a dampener on our visit. Well worth a visit.
