Beautiful setting amazing food fabulous service

Wow what a GEM! Recommend a visit, food amazing, service was great and ability order by an app to your table. Amazing views of the river either side.

We booked lunch on the terrace on a sunny day. Greeted by a guy in a multi coloured checkered shirt. Really welcoming. Sat and our waitress, was good too. Plus, very clean toilets. We’d spent over £70. The food was fabulous. Really good. At that point, a well deserved 5 stars. Then, we went to the drinks part by the river and ordered a drink via the QR code. The drinks came and my wife’s Diet Coke was flat. It happens. No worries. A lovely day. So, she went to the outside bar to get it replaced. This is where the review went from 5 stars to 1 star. My wife came back, most unlike her, and said, ‘I’ve not been treated that badly for 15 years’. His defence will be that he didn’t say much. Agreed. It was more the slamming down of the replaced Diet Coke accompanied with a look & body language that attempted to make you feel like ‘You dare to come to my bar with this’ - I’ll punish you to do so. About 30 minutes later, drinks finished, I confronted him about his poor service. I could see what she meant. I shared how unhappy my wife was with the service, and his reply was, ‘The drink was replaced, wasn’t it?’. Then, he attempted to stare at me until I looked away. I didn’t. His only response was an attempt to stare a customer down. Very sad. You are front line customer service. Shocking customer service. Then, the manager stepped in and asked me to share. I did. She apologised. I walked away very unhappy. I see in other reviews that you criticise people for not bringing their concerns to you & then they write damming google reviews. I brought my concern to you and you did very little. If you want customers to bring concerns to you then, you need to be able to deal with them beyond a basic ‘Sorry’. My wife also noticed how the same bar guy had treated the guy in the queue before her. Not well. The customer had ordered a beer and the bartender was pouring when the customer told him it was the wrong beer. The bartender’s similar reply - non verbal but a slamming down of the pint glass to then pour the correct beer. It’s not the words that the problem. It’s the attitude. The chef, maitre d, waitress - all their efforts destroyed because one young guy had no clue how to treat customers and thought he’d get away with it until a customer confronted his poor behaviour. Disgusted. I feel for all the other members of the team who wanted to provide a fabulous experience, let down by one person who did not care in the slightest. I waited by the bar for my wife, as she went to the toilet. The manager was discussing my complaint in the upper bar with the guy in the checkered shirt. Please don’t discuss customer complaints in public. I wanted to step in and say ‘I am here. Ask me’. You didn’t notice me. Lovely location. Great food. Customer service ruined.

Beautiful pub that sits on Nags Head Island in the beautiful Abingdon. We arrived on the weekend of the pubs Beer and live music festival, absolutely amazing! There are multiple area to the pub; Outdoor seating undercover (which sits on the Thames), Bar area and a beautiful restaurant. We dined in the restaurant, the food was absolutely beautiful - fast service ++ and the food was to a very high quality/fantastic portion sizes. Our service was absolutely wonderful from the waiting staff; tables were cleaned so quickly, refills of drinks offered and all round attentive/5* service. Parking for this pub is located just over the bridge at the local council run car park - free parking after 6pm! Massive shout out to Elisha, Michelle and Chef James. You guys honestly provided us with such a wonderful night! We will definitely come back! Highly recommend The Nags Head pub over all the other pubs in the area! Do come visit!

We had fantastic time at nags head Abingdon on this Sunday, It’s an amazing place, food is fabulous here. We enjoyed tandoori chicken pizzas, halloumi chips and drinks. Ambience is awesome lovely garden and riverside view is breathtaking 😍 The service was excellent all staff were friendly and helpful especially Nensi who gave awesome service . Lovely food…. Highly recommended.

Very nice food, and the atmosphere plus the lovely views over the riverside was very memorable. The three small crunchy pieces covered in chocolate and placed in a small glass container were a nice finishing touch to our lovely afternoon meal out.

Nice pub but I feel they exploit the location with overpriced food and drink. The choice is limited and they expect you to pay extra for sides which could be included in the meal. Might go back for a drink but that's all.

Went for Sunday lunch for a family birthday, easy to book ahead on line with an email reminder the day before. We were greeted by Elisha and the service through out was great even though the pub was busy. The Sunday roast was lovely and tasty. Would definitely recommend this pub.

Good atmosphere, food is a good standard and about right for the price point. If the weather is nice the outside seating is brilliant .

Popped in with most of our wedding party after a trip on the Thames - lovely friendly place who patiently served some people who were indecisive about their choice of drink and made us very welcome. A special mention to the female member of staff who helped immensely when we had a domestic issue with a couple and guided one of them to the separate exit.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a lovely meal outside on the decking in the sun today, service was great and we’d both come back again!

Outside would have been great if the kitchen extract fan wasn't so noisy I could hardly hear people talk.

Just popped in for a drink after a riverside walk. Sat outside with the dog that was nice. But the price of the drinks was high which would have been OK if they were any good but my friend disliked his cider so much he couldn't finish it it would have been worth complaining or changing as they only had the one on draft. We popped in to use the facilities. Inside wreaks of fish! I know some love fish and the smell of it which is probably why it was so busy inside. But no thank you not for me.

Just had lunch there earlier today. Really nice food and great staff (Michelle and Sarah). Will definitely visit again. Abingdon is well worth a visit. Lots to see. Great walks. And dog friendly.

I would rate this as zero if I could. Walked in today afternoon with my child in a bright pink bike helmet. Was ignored 3 times at the host stand. I wanted to ask if they did a kids menu as my husband had wanted to eat there. 3 times the hostess ignored me. 1st as I walked to the stand. 2nd when she noticed I was still standing there after she walked off the 1st time! 3rd she came back to the stand and infront of me talked to someone else! I mean. I get if your busy. Just say I will be with you in a moment! I want to know is, what was the issue?

What a gorgeous place! Meals a little on the pricey side, but all 4 of us were pleasanyly surprised with the portion sizes, quality and presentation! You must book as so busy!!!

Really disappointment to be lied to on arrival. We'd booked a table about a week ago inside the restaurant. As it was a lovely day we asked to sit at the riverside bit outside but were told it was full. Not massive drama as understand this probably does get booked way in advance as its a lovely place to eat. I asked the manager / table booker Graham? if the outside island bar does burgers and he said "no only pizza" mildy moodly. We decided to look on the app and you could indeed get burgers, pizza and all kinds of food. I honestly cant work out why they wanted to keep us in the restaurant rather than outside. Shame being newish to the area customer experience didnt feel high on the agenda :(

Amazing, cosy pub on an island with huge outdoor seating areas by the water, so perfect in the sun. Highly recommend a drop in!

Venue is great in sunny day, however staff can force a smile, they are quite rude a part of Erna, who clearly is the smile of the place.

Nice beer. Tuna Nicoise was very nice but the portion size was a bit comical for the price. 3 potatoes halved, a handful of green beans, a smallish piece of tuna then HALF a boiled egg.. yes half.. how do you even cook that.. 😁 Felt a little short changed at £19..

Amazing visit for Mother’s Day! Elisha and Taranto were great. Food was amazing!

We spent an hour waiting for our lunch when it was not busy, and the lunch was nothing fancy. The food is alright , the service is lukewarm and underwhelming. The kid’s portion of sorbet that is a part of the kids menu is minuscule and priced separately on the bill at £2.99 but not on the menu. This was by far, the most expensive sorbet I ever tried for volume delivered. We will stick to drinks next time .

We sat outside next to the river which was a lovely setting. The vegetarian beetroot wellington roast was absolutely delicious. The portion sizes were very generous and everything just tasted divine!

Perfectly cooked chargrilled medium rare steak, bearnaise sauce 100% fresh. Truffle cheese chips hit the spot. Garlic butter dreamy. Way above average pub grub

The service that we received from our server Elisha was exceptional. She went out of her way to be helpful and was warm, friendly and attentive. When a member of our group was disappointed that their meal wasn't what they'd expected when it arrived, she changed it for something else. This ensured the evening was a success for all of us and we'd definitely return again. Elisha was also very helpful with regard to allergies. I often go to this place but today was a disappointment. Lovely sunny weather but they just wouldn’t serve food outside - so we left. They do have some good dishes when you can get them.

Found this place randomly for an informal business meeting. We spent a good 3 hours in afternoon there using their free wifi and 4 seated table only having had coffee and tea. By the time my meeting ended the place filled up into a really viby place early evening. I was next to the cosy fireplace and I felt like I wanted to stay for dinner which I did. Food was excellent. Definitely recommend this place to anybody and thank you for your warm welcome and hospitality.

Cosy pub on the River Thames. Also has outside seating area overlooking the river. The atmosphere was buzzing on a Saturday night. Service from Johnnie was excellent and very attentive. Food exceeded our expectations, we loved the cheese soufflé starter and both our mains were tasty.

You can always rely on the food at the Nags. It's very busy on a summer evening and it's also perfect in winter. Good food and great service, as always, from Jonny, and his colleagues this evening, Michelle and Lewis. We will come again.

Not always the friendliest, a couple times ago we came in it was quite busy and we were very bluntly told we wouldn't get a table. Today we visited for a coffee and the drinks came over incorrect, they were taken back with ‘this was what I was told’, and when they came back the drinks were half the size.. bit of a shame as its a nice pub :(

We had 2 chicken roasts which were large portions. Lots of gravy. Chicken burger was nice!

I wanted to take my husband to the town i lived in on our way back from Wales. Called up to book a table, they were clearly incredibly busy but they reserved us a table, accommodating our puppy also. After 23 years away from the town, my last memories of food there didn't leave me expecting to be wowed, but I could not have been more wrong. The staff were very attentive and brought our dog water without us even asking. We were sat in the corner, looking out onto the river, a lovely spot. Also the route where we watched plate after plate come out of the kitchen. They all looked excellent! Finally decided on the chicken terrine, salt and pepper squid followed by a trio of roasts. Good lord it was all excellent! The portions are huge, I couldn't finish it all but somehow my husband managed to solve that issue. I am now very sad I no longer love in Abingdon! We will definitely be back!!

Was visiting Abingdon for a couple of hours and we chose the Nag's Head for our lunch. Great old interior decor and the staff are welcoming. For two of us lunch cost £50 with a beer each. A little on the pricier side but that is to be expected from a pub like this, and the haddock & chips were delicious! The Brakspear house beers are OK but they also have other options such as Poretti, which I preferred over the one we tried. I would choose this pub again if I came back to Abingdon. That is the highest compliment.

Lovely people, great for kids, amazing beer

I live in distant Dorset but regularly visit my partner who lives in Abingdon. She has introduced me to the Nag's Head and it is now our destination of choice every time. The food is amazing and the service second to none. All the staff are outstandingly good, with a genuine welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. I must particularly mention Johnny who strikes the perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive, but all the staff clearly are doing their utmost on our behalf. Thank you.

I recently visited Neg head and was blown away by the amazing food and great service. The menu offered a variety of options and each dish I tried was delicious. The Lady who served were also incredibly friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend Neg head for anyone looking for a great meal with top-notch service.

Called in on 2/12/24, with a work colleague for to have a meal, ordered a drink first, went to pay for the drinks with cash, while we looked at menu, was told "we are cashless", astounded that a business refused to accept CASH !!, decided not to eat there on that principle they refused to accept cash. Cash is king, use it or lose it 😀.

I had the misfortune of being part of booked party for Sunday on the 17th November. I was served a 'traditional Sunday lunch of roast beef'. Was there a qualified 'chef' involved in any of this?Cold pre-cooked sliced beef riddled withe fat and gristle and a hot 'gravy' sloshed on top of it to disguise it was freshly cooked. Hard, partly raw roast potatoes, polystyrene 'Yorkshire pudding' over boiled vegetables and cauliflower cheese surrounded by wet sludge. Two Americans on the table next to me, clearly excited about a traditional British Sunday roast were also met with this slop to their utter disappointment. Frankly, get a proper chef on the payroll or don't serve food.

Cracking spot. Staff fitted me in for a last minute lunch place and, whilst my steak was underwhelming the atmosphere, location and general loveliness of the staff made it a fine experience.

Enjoy delicious food by the river, beautiful scenery and delicious food, full enjoyment~ No matter how bright the sun is, how hot the temperature is, and how hot your knives and forks are, this place is really beautiful, so be sure to enjoy the opportunity to sit in the middle of the river and dine! The food here is really of a high standard, especially the eggs Benedict, which we both couldn't eat more than we wanted. It's super delicious!

Great pub on the whole, one of my favourites in the area and a regular drinking hole for myself and my peers. Food is generally good if a little pricey. Excellent spot by the river, large terrace and gardens... Unfortunately let down on this occasion by a questionable decisions with regard to customer service. One of the key draws and indeed selling points of this pub is the garden. It's a mild October evening and it's intermittently raining, nonetheless my preference is to sit outside as there is covered space, another plus point... Or so I thought... Arrived outside to find the main garden barriered off, on enquiry this was "to keep everyone in one area during the winter". The remaining outside space is not covered, so I sit outside during a pause in the rain, when the rain returns with vigour I politely ask again if it would be possible to sit under cover in the (currently barriered off) outside area, to be told "we're not opening it, it's instructions from my general manager". Said manager is on holiday. I am now damp... You've removed access to the the main attraction of this pub and the main reason I choose to come here... Disappointing. Garden re-opened, rating revised. Good choice 👍

Lovely pub, excellent location and great atmosphere, good service too... the food just didn't match everything else. We had Sunday lunch and it wasn't anything special, it was just ok. The meat was mainly fat and the veg a bit tasteless and seemed to but just randomly piled onto the plate. Perhaps we just expected too much from first impressions as we walked in.

Great location outside over the River , can't fault it. Food was good esp. The chicken & chorizo burger & the apple crumble was tasty sweet , but needed more crumble. A bit pricey for a steak £37.50 but overall a good experience.. I would bring visiting family to soak up atmosphere on a sunny winter day ..

Lovely setting by the river. Outdoor seating recommended if weather OK. Staff friendly and professional. We had the set menu which was limited but a bargain compared with A La Carte. Nice cask ales on offer. No parking but a large public car park close by.

Drove up from Brighton to meet family halfway for lunch. The food was lovely. It's in the most beautiful location right on the Thames would highly recommend.
