Nags Head in Vale of White Horse

The food was incredible, the atmosphere was lovely, we all sat outside and bright sunshine. The staff where really nice and helpful and we pre ordered food so it seems to come out quite quick. I couldn't recommend this place more. THE CAULIFLOWER WINGS ARE INCREDIBLE!!! if you don't like spicy you can either ask for no chillys on top or just take them off like we did. Definitely a must have.

Fantastic location on the river literally, standard selection of food but good quality. Last time I had lunch there, barely managed to finish the burger, was so big! Live music quite often and quite decent musicians, too. Not cheap, though, and Sunday lunchtime better come early, the place is packed. I was even asked if I had a reservation on a Wednesday! (was still able to find a place for three) Conclusion: very few things beat a Sunday lunch by the river at Nag's Head, but you better come prepared :)

Food is average, overpriced but you pay more for the setting. However the service outside was shocking. The staff were just downright rude, they didn't engage with us other than grunts when putting the food down. We had to ask for cutlery to which they reacted rudely and then brought us only two sets for a party of five people, when we asked for another three sets they rolled their eyes and just did not come back to the table. Never experienced so many different members of staff so rude in one place - none of them wanted to be there it seemed and they let it show!

Had lunch for 5 here on Sunday. Service in the restaurant was appalling. Very slow and no offers of further drinks. We had to ask for dessert menus. Food was mediocre for the price. My pate was tasteless and the roll it was served with was stale. My Caesar salad £13.95, was at best a side salad size with far too much dressing which made the lettuce soggy and inedible. Puddings were at best ok. Disabled access down very steep uneven ramp unless sitting in the bar which looks out onto the road. This was a recce for a dinner in September. We will not be returning.

Great atmosphere by river. Outdoor area was spacious and inside was pretty. They staff were great. I gave 3 stars for food as the steaks were massively over cooked. I asked for rare, it came as closer to medium. My friend asked for med rare, it was close to well done. We didnt complain as we wanted to enjoy the evening. Rest of food was good. Portion sizes were small so ended up eating again at home. We went back again as the kids loved the ambience but the mac cheese was inconsistent to the first load few days before. Different chef for sure. However the adult meals were better. Sunday roast was tasty. All in all we had a fab time. The ambience and service out trumps food so we would go there again.

The pub is beautiful as it's set in an amazing location, with the outside area surrounded by the river. What more could one ask for? Decent tasting food dare I say. But sadly the food they served me and my partner was expensive and tasted pretty awful. I ordered the sourdough mushroom pizza and my partner the beef burger. Had we paid 8 pounds or so for each dish I would not complain. But at about 17 pounds each the quality was unacceptable. The sourdough mushrooms pizza base was mushy and soggy, the mushrooms I am still trying to find them as there were 3. Maybe the chef ate them? The overall taste of the pizza was pretty awful, mainly spoiled by the base wich is always the centrepiece of a pizza. At least it was served in a ceramic plate unlike the burger which came in an ugly 10 pence plastic tray. It was clearly a frozen patty, which can be made to taste decent if the chef can do their job. But this was lacking taste. The bun was a squashed soggy affair. The fries were a bit dry but ok. Overall and considering the price (over 40 pounds for the poor food and two diet cokes!) the food was tasteless. Nags Head you need a new chef or send the current one/s to cookery school again. And presentation matters. The plastic tray may be acceptable for the burger van at the retail park but not in a decent pub.

Lovely spot on the river, food looks great although we didn't order any. As it was a nice day it was very busy but we still managed to find a table to sit and didn't have to wait long at the bar for a drink. Very dog friendly, they had bowls for water and a barrel with plenty of fresh water in and also a jar with dog treats in. You can also order via the QR code which is present on most of the tables.

First time visiting Abingdon as we have now moved into the area . Great location, super food and wonderful table service. Thank you

Beautiful place to a drink on a sunny day. The pub has a large riverside garden, which is often full. Dog friendly with plenty of water bowls. The food in the garden isn’t great - pretty average burgers and pizzas expensively priced. Definitely worth stopping for a drink though.

We have just spent a Saturday morning here having breakfast and listening to live music. We highly recommend it. Wonderful ambience by the river, fantastic service and extremely tasty food. We had the veggie option and were very happy with it. We are regulars at the Nag's Head and love coming here. Definitely the best pub in the area.

An unfortunate visit to this usually reliable venue. Incompetent staff failed to take the orders correctly . Management agreed and although we did not all get what we wanted the bill was adjusted to compensate which was acceptable. Will return but disappointed this time

Lovely place right buy the river.

While on a long walk by the river, we thought we'd stop for a bite to eat at the island grill and some refreshments. Now today is 28°, height of the summer holidays and they don't open the grill till 2pm. This used to be such a lovely place under previous management, always had things going on, live music, great selection of beers and the sense to open the lunch grill for lunch time. Unfortunately now, there's no live music, no atmosphere, terrible selection of lagers and ales and no food till 2 unless you want a meal from the restaurant. 4 separate groups were there hoping to order from the grill at 12.45 today and 3 of the groups just left without even a drink. The best thing that can happen to this establishment is to go under, shut doors and start again with some management that had some business sense and more than a GCSE C in business studies. Until new management we won't be frequenting again

Excellent pub. I visited on my way back to Kent and will definitely be coming back at some point. The staff were great!

This pub is an excellent venue for a summer drink with a great location and beautiful river view from the beer garden as its located on an island in the middle of the river. Good selection of draught beer and lager with equally appealing indoor environment. Didn't eat so can't comment on the food. There's even a place to alight from a boat or canoe so you can arrive via the river.

Lovely Amelia served us and we had a great time eating some great food by the river.

Nice riverside pub in Abingdon. Get a good pint. Food was tasty but portion sizes were very small. £16.95 for fried squid and chips, and it was basically a basket meal !!

Fish Pie was devine! Service to a little longer than expected for the time of day but it was otherwise pretty good. And please serve the pie it with a spoon next time as the sauce was so good I had to practice lick the bowl...

Food mediocre, but stunning location.

We visited for lunch and sat in their garden which has a different, more low key menu, to the main restaurant. Food quality was below average and cost way beyond what it was worth. We had burgers and kids burger and they were so average. Service was also below standard.

Absolutely fantastic, the food is second to none, the staff are very polite, friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.

Sitting on Nag’s Head island in the middle of The Thames this pub has a very beautiful setting for a drink outside. Inside is decorated with pictures & paintings of the Oxford boat race teams of the past. Really cosy atmosphere & the food was amazing.

Had a good sampling of food over two evenings. Great selection of ice creams and sorbets, duck salad is amazing, the service is quick and nice even for a large group like the one we had.

I suppose you can't beat the river island location and ambiance of this pub. In a party of four we were seated inside and all ordered Sunday lunch (which I thought was slightly overpriced). Selling five quid bottles of Rosé for twenty five is a bit steep also but I suppose this is par for the course. The pub was busy but the food first came out in a fairly timely manor. Apart from being stone cold served on stone cold plates, the food was nice. Our (very professional) waitress asked us if everything was OK and we mentioned that the food was cold. She went to talk to the chef and our food was then briskly removed. (Another waitress was somewhat brusk). Within minutes fresh food was brought out, this time fairly hot on hot plates. Frankly I was expecting more of an apology. Perhaps a free coffee? Something off the bill? Nah, none of that. To cap it off the pub doesn't take legal tender (cash) so the £150 we put down was returned.

Always a great midriver pub, amongst many others nearby. Surprisingly uncrowded openair and inside, but service a little slow (It used to have good steaks, but we didn't dine this time

A nice pub on the river, met friends and was told at 8.20pm no more food and then they gave last orders. The pub was busy, Euro 2024 is on and they shut at 9pm, so anyone watching the game had to suddenly leave. Talk about missing an opportunity.

Went for my birthday a few weeks ago, food was good. Service was a little slow but it was a really busy day and the staff were doing their best ☺️

Returning customers after several years and we were not disappointed !! Booking Advised. ! A very warm welcome and great table by river. A very good menu for all tastes and budgets. Allergies are catered for with no problems.Highly recommend the Peri half roast chicken with sweet potato fries Superb. !! The Butternut Risotto was also a hit !! Looking forward to returning sometime.

Just popped in for a coffee and the young man serving was outstanding ( dark hair, beard , pink shirt and dark blue chino shorts ) excellent service and a fine latte to boot … a beautiful riverside pub that is fit for purpose great seating areas / and dining … superb decor inside with seating / dinning areas … well done stunning pub and gardens with outside bars 👍

A great location with super views across the river. Saturday night is always busy so we had to wait a while for our meal; however on arrival we were notified about the wait. The staff were very attentive and Ella in particular was both friendly and efficient whilst serving us.

Visited today for the first time with family, including 2 toddlers. The pub is in a really nice setting on the river and decor has a lovely cozy pub feel. However, this pub lacks a lot on service. The pub wasn’t overly busy at the time we visited either. Both the lady that showed us to our table and the waitress were abrupt, unfriendly and did the bare minimum. We had a 1 year old and 3 year old. Never offered us a high chair and waited about 15 minutes to ask for one after sitting down. The drinks came quickly but the food took over 30mins to arrive. It was difficult to get staff attention because they were not attentive either. The food was okay. The burger was over cooked and the beetroot wellington was over flavoured with spices. I also asked for a Yorkshire pudding when ordering but never received it. Usually I would politely ask staff but due to not seeing them and dealing with 2 little children it was more hassle than it was worth. My partner and family paid the service charge without thinking. I would reconsider visiting again unfortunately.

Is it possible to serve a smaller roast? I had a sandwich when I got home. The 3 roast potatos were not cooked/roasted, reviews were good so maybe we were too late? 4pm...who knows?...nice pub, staff are spot on and atmosphere was nice...but £26 ph for a roast snack was poor.

Wonderful place to enjoy a delicious fish and chips with a nice view, quick service and very kind waiters. The pork riblets were amazing and the chicken wings fantastic!

A lovely place, unfortunately they do not accept cash, which is not right. Cash is legal tender. Not everyone needs to use a card.

Food was excellent, if a bit slow - service much the same. I don’t understand though why the serving of olives was so small - the actual cost of food is so low compared to the costs of staff, rent, etc - why cheapskate on something as cheap as that?

Waited over half hour for staff to take our drinks order, was over an hour waiting for food, but food was really good!

Elisha was absolutely fantastic! We booked a table for 12 for the day before a wedding. Elisha couldn't do enough for us even with 12 simultaneous orders. We were outside on the deck right by the river. Anna kept in touch by email so that everything went smoothly. Thoroughly recommend this place. Thankyou Elisha!

Tasty pub food in a cosy location!

This pub does look great, however, if you are driving, there is no parking other than a pay and display over the bridge which doesn't advertise prices on the outside, they only advertise the fine.

An amazing place and fantastic food. Joined for evening dinner, it was quite busy and we have not booked however we were welcomed by nice smiling person who has acomodated us with great table by the window with amazing view. Despite of clearly busy night had time to check on us and made us feel well looked after. Amelia was making sure that we are well looked after! Thank you team Nags team for making us feel so welcomed and looked after! Great food and you should try new menu! Fantastic!

Roast dinner small for the money you pay better value at other pubs I have been to.

Had the Sunday Roast which is the best pub cooked roast I have ever eaten. Choice of Beef, Pork or chicken or you could have a trio. Food was delicious. Vegetarian option also. Other options on menu, burgers ect. We ate in the restaurant which was serviced. Copius amounts of seating inside and out. Tipi near the outdoor bar area, seating along the rivers edge. Gorgeous pub, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff. All in all worth a visit.

5 star service. Amy was amazing. Entire please is beautiful and food is an art piece. It was so nicely served that I felt sorry eating it, and it was super tasty. I have discovered my new favourite place. I will come back for sure.

I had a delicious salad with falafel hummus and pomegranate seeds, it reminded me of our trip to Israel.

Enjoyed a fabulous Sunday lunch with my wife and our dogs in the bar at the Nags Head. The staff were most attentive, service was friendly, thanks to Matt, Amelia and the team. Suffice to say we will be back !

Located in prime riverside location overlooking Abingdon bridge. Great in the summer time as there is plenty of outdoor seating but be warned this is a very popular pub and often packed with drinkers and diners when the weather is good. Great area for storing your bike if you want to cycle to the pub. It's quite expensive to eat and drink here because of the prime location. Difficult to park directly next to the pub so wheel chair users may struggle a bit. Most people will need to park in the pay and display carpark 1 minute walk from the pub. The quality of the food is very good though and nice service and atmosphere. Would recommend.

Great place to sit outside by river.

Here today for lunch with wife and two daughters, and it’s all been wonderful. Staff very friendly and attentive and food and drinks all excellent.
