I hadn’t had chips from Murphy’s in ages so I thought I’d give it a go. I cycled home, opened the chips and realised I had been given reheated chips that had been clearly cooked much earlier in the evening. I was so hungry I thought I’d eat them anyway, but the taste wasn’t good at all. They had clearly been cooked in dirty oil. Please use clean oil!!

Best fish and chips for years! Lovely light crunchy batter and obviously home cut potatoes. All cooked to order. Definitely worth a visit and easy parking opposite too.

Great tasting fish and chips! Ordered gluten-free fish and chips. Tasted really nice, batter was different but still tasted good. Good value for money and great Service from the lady that was there.

There are not a lot of local F&C shops that offer gluten free, but this is one of them. They cook their GF fish in rice flour & it's delicious. It's a real treat for me to eat from a take-away without worry. Thank you Murphys!

I've lived in Hitchin for 9 years and this has been my regular spot all of the that time. I've tried the other fish and chip shops but always gone back to Murphy's. Their curry sauce is a favourite of ours too. It can get busy on a Fri/ Sat night, so allow extra time when going along at these peak times as everything is cooked to order.

this has always been my top spot for fish and chips in hitchin. friendly staff and ample portions. the inky thing I would advise is plan ahead, it often gets very busy and as they do everything fresh there is sometimes a wait.

Been using Murphys on and off for years but the last two times I have used them, the fish and chips were outstanding. The batter was light, thick and crunchy and the chips were bang on good. Been to many chipies and really rate this one and Broadlands in Stalham Norfolk as being two of the best.

The food quality excellent as always. Unfortunately though the quality of service and presentation has gone down markedly. The table service has now disappeared,so you order and take your food to a table yourself . But the worst bit is that the food now comes in a cardboard box rather than a plate as per takeaway so you might as well do just that. Sad really, used to enjoy our visits there, hence my rating as 3 where I would normally give it a 5.

Succulent moist fish. Good chips. Batter could be better but overall good experience. Our first choice for Hitchin.

Nothing more to say than this is the best Chippy in Hitchin. We come here regularly and have never had a mediocre or bad meal. High standards that have been kept for years.

What an odd little place this is and quite lovely. Called in very late on a Saturday afternoon and the place looked more like a tea shop than a fish and chip shop. No matter however because the large cod a chips I had was perfection. Batter crispy on the outside, soft within. Chips delicious. My friend's haddock was the same. And the fish cakes were lovely. All cooked to order and piping hot. A gem

Been to murpheys many times in the past and always been happy BUT the past couple of times the whole lot has gone straight in the bin. Meal was dry, over cooked and just horrid. Almost felt it had been reheated. Won't be going back again

I usually really enjoy fish and chips (as a takeaway) from Murphys as the fish is freshly cooked and the chips are great. Having said that, I ordered a large cod and chips on my most recent visit. The lady said "I'll just cook that for you". When I opened it at home the fish consisted of two pieces of fish (a medium and a small) but the batter was so old as to be inedible. It must have been hours old. I picked out the fish but the batter resembled used leather (sole?). I returned to complain and received an apology but will not be buying from there again. Be warned, when it's good it's very good - but when it isn't.............

After trying all of the fish and chip shops in Hitchin, I now only ever go to Murphys as their fish is simply the best. All fish is cooked to order, so you might have to wait a few minutes, but this means your fish will be soft, moist and delicious.

'Adopted' Murphys when I moved here last autumn with memories of visiting with my daughter when I was in Hitchin. I have used both the eat in bench in the takeaway and the tables in the small restaurant . The fish is generally good, particularly when fried to order in the rice batter. The 'senior' portion in the takeaway gets a variable size small portion of fish and depending on time of day a portion of very average fries. I visited the restaurant one evening with my partner and she had a portion of scampi, I had a portion of haddock and we shared a large portion of the 'new' cheesy fries. Scampi and fish were fine, but the fries were quite frankly awful......unappetizing and ridiculously expensive. Both of us were unimpressed, I have since been back to the takeaway once and just had a medium haddock which was cooked to order and nice, hot, crisp and fresh . So..... Not cheap and too variable - living on a reputation and needs to sharpen up the act.

We went here with an elderly lady from church,or should I say older than us.We went in to sit down, the staff were very friendly, the tables and everywhere were really clean. We were served on china plates, fish and chips at pensioner rate,so abit cheaper than the proper price, we had a cuo of tea also in a china mug.We looked out the front at people passing by,market on other side of the road.I would recommend this to anyone to go here for a sit down meal or take away, usually a queue out side depending what time you go,sometimes you might have to wait for a table to sit down, this tells you how good it is.

Great food cooked to order that delivers on taste. Great big crispy chips that are not greasey considering the cooking process. Portions are huge, very good value for money. It also has a couple of tables at the front of the shop if you have the time and fancy a sit down you can eat your food off a plate with a knife and fork....nice.This place is well worth a visit and telephone orders are welcome.

Be prepared to wait as everything is cooked to order and it is well worth the 10 minute wait. I always have cod and the pieces are huge. 1 portion of chips easily feeds 2 or 3 depending on appetite. Rice batter is available on request.

Having just spent a week in the West Country , my wife and I saw fit to try as many of the recommended fish restaurants in this large area , I can say categorically that Murphys Fish Bar in Hitchin , is the best .Their fish is fresh and tasty, full of flavour , batter is dry and crisp , fora special treat try their rice flour batter alternative , simply sensational !!! , the chips are made from top quality spuds , no eyes or strange shaped bits and holes , they are crisp and snap open , showing the fluffy potato inside The people are great , warm and friendly and if you do have to wait because there's a qeue , then it only goes to further show just how popular they are , they open early on market days , and there's the added bonus of dining in if you'd prefer it . Clean and tidy surroundings , but always the same high quality fish and chips , Well Done Murphys you've got it right , quality service price and ambience , thank you

Had a nice cod & chips to take away. Freshly cooked so a few minutes wait. Nice, crispy batter and fresh fish cooked just right. Chips were good, obviously cut from good quality spuds as none of the black bits or worm holes you find from some places if you look too closely. Polite, friendly service.

You would pay more in a fancy restaurant but not have half the taste. The batter is crisp and dry the fish thick and fleshy a perfect combination. Yes you have to sit in a 1950’s cake to enjoy it but the Fish and chips are well worth the experience!!!

To get served here can be bedlum, particularly on a busy Saturday evening, when masses of people appear behind the counter, serving, cooking, preparing, tidying up, & generally tripping over themselves.Notwithstanding that, the food's usually freshly cooked & of reasonable quality. Like with most chippies in the area you need to keep watch that unpleasant, dried-up chip scrapnel isn't slipped into your takeaway order.

I really enjoy the fish and chips from here. We've also ordered mushy peas from here but I'm not a great fan of them, wherever they're from. As one might expect, these didn't change my opinion of them. One special aspect of Murhpys is that they have a rice flour batter that is available for people who can't have gluten. It is very thin and I even hesitate to call it a batter but it is good, not as greasy as the traditional battered fish.Murhphys has a cute little dining area at the front of the place with lovely big windows looking out on to the main road. I've never eaten there but people inside always look so happy to be enjoying their meals. The staff even go out to chat with their patrons there while they're eating; very sweet. In general though, all the patrons of Murphys seem very happy whether they're eating inside or collecting their food. This could be due to the staff being super smiley and friendly.
