Murgatroyds in Leeds

We had a great experience at the restaurant, it was worth to pay a bit more than the takeaway area, we ordered the biggest size of fish and chips, it was a monster haha. Just one thing, it would’ve been nice to hear advice from the waiter when we ordered, we were 2 people, the biggest size is definitely enough for 4 adults.

Great atmosphere, good service and large portions. A little way out if your not local but worth the run out..

Brilliant restaurant and takeaway with quality food at reasonable prices. Recommend the pensioners special (age dependant of course). Varied menu as well as fish and chips all at reasonable prices. Good childrens menu. May be a queue to get in due to it's popularity

Best fish and chips in Yorkshire 👌

Had to circle the extremely tight carpark four times before finding a parking space. Maybe the owners could look at extending the car park due to how busy they are, but this just shows the food is of excellent quality and value for money.

Excellent food .But miserable older lady with blonde hair and glasses seated us literally showed us to table and dropped menu's and walked off. A friendly approach would of been better.

Great food and very consistent. I've never been and thought the food wasn't as good as last time. I've only ever been in the takeaway, so can't comment on the restaurant. The prices are fair for what you get and the service is very good. The only thing I would change is doing the battered sausage like the fish or spam fritters. I don't know if they cook the sausage first, but the batter doesn't sit the same as it does on other items. Still nice though.

There is nowhere better for Fish & Chips!

Been wanting to come here for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Billy Murg special was fantastic. Fresh, beautifully cooked fish, chips and curry sauce bang on, and a stack of bread to mop up with. Lemon Meringue Pie is an absolute treat afterwards. Very busy and had a small wait to get a table but more than worth it. Fantastic service all round and even seen my deam future wife, the stunningly beautiful angel who showed us to our table. To whoever the perfect brunette with the glasses may be, you have my heart and I confess my everlasting love. Murgatroyds is exactly what the slogan says, best fish and chips around!

Please can you open a franchise in London? Murgatroyds is what I miss most about living up north!

Well worth the visit.its a good 40 minute drive from where i live.never disappoints.been going for a bout 4 years and still as good as ever.carnt beat the curry sauce.wont be long before we plan our next visit.nice friendly staff. 10/10

Excellent fish and chips cooked correctly in beef dripping. Not cheap but quality. Huge queue. There are only 2 fish and chip shops I use and this one of them. (The others in bramhope, but has much shorter opening hours). I live in Birmingham which is a desert when it comes to excellent fish and chip shops.iThe only negative is you do have to queue a fair while for the take out option.

Visited on 30/12/24 for the first time in a while as we now care first and elderly relative who has dimentia, thought we would take her along with us. The food was lovely, Billy Murg special excellent and cooked lovely. Everything we had was very nice. Our nan had the seniors menu, and while it is good value, she just can't really eat that much, we went for a juice starter and the fish and chips main and then a pudding. She ate the fish but not the chips or mushy peas, she's 86, probably a child's fish and chips would do her but would feel cheeky asking for this, would be good if there was an option to just have a seniors small main course. Next time, we will perhaps just ask for no chips as we don't like wasting food. Anyway, we will have a look and see if other options are available next time.

Excellent Service and wonderful piece of cod, which was way too big to finish it all. Will be back the next time I'm passing the area. Forget the rest just go to the best place in town.

After a lovely Christmas nativity afternoon in Baildon Church. We stopped off for an enjoyable Saturday early evening of fish & chips musy peas b & b washed down by a pint. Best described as tasty. Nice one Murgatroyds. Near Yeadon Airport.

Took over an hour and a half from arriving to getting served in the restaurant. Food was good when it eventually did arrive just frustratingly slow. Lady welcoming guests at the entrance was unfriendly and unwelcoming.

We went because I'd seen lots of amazing reviews on social media. It was busy, but I had pre-booked a table. We had the haddock and chips and curry sauce. The waiter was a young lad who was brilliant. Very polite and couldn't do enough for us. The food didn't take long to come but it was disappointing. The bowl of curry sauce was on the small side. The chips were too thick for me, and the fish was OK, but I didn't rate the batter. It was ok but not memorable or better than a local chippy. I won't be going back unfortunately.

We have passed this restaurant many times but have never had the time to call in for a meal..because we had time, we called in on the way to the airport, we were blown away with the whole restaurant, the food was so freshly cooked and each course was brought to us with a smile. We had the OAP menu and have to say it was fabulous. We are so impressed, we are calling again on the way to the airport on the 19th and are looking forward to enjoying another late afternoon meal in your restaurant. I would recommend your restaurant to anyone, what a find!!! In fact, we're bringing relatives with us on the 19th because they have never been before and only live in Bradford and are too looking forward to trying it for themselves. Thank you so much for beautiful food and hospitality, we look forward to coming in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year to you all.

Mediocre food in a not very attractive place.

Called today at lunchtime we usually eat in the restaurant but used the Take Away today. Yes it was busy but we were so impressed how organised it was. You ordered when we went in and the fish was cooked fresh and piping hot, big fish and good portions. Best fish and chips in Yorkshire. The young girl who served was so polite and everyone she served prior to us she said enjoy you’re meal and have a nice day, just that personal touch made people smile, I asked the young man on the till her name, he said Lucie I said she’s a great asset to you’re team. 5*

What a great place to visit . I had seen it on tick tok and thought I would try it. Had the haddock ( billy size ) Well it didn’t disappoint it was big, batter was the best I have tasted for over 30 years( old school ) The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. I can normally finish everything i order but I can honestly say it beat me . About 1/6 of the fish left and 1/4 chips . Will be coming back here again .

Sadly below par today. Restaurant very busy. Had a quite a long wait to be served once we were seated but didnt mind waiting as staff under pressure. My husband's fish was OK but mine was mostly inedible very dry and chewy. Not up to usual standard. Left half of it. Waitress finally came to see if everything OK. Advised not but she just shrugged and said I should have said something earlier. I would if anyone had checked earlier. Will seek alternative next time we fancy fish snd chips.

We haven’t been to Murgatroyds for years and our latest visit did not disappoint. We had the two courses menu - the servings were massive, the fish was fresh and beautifully cooked, and the crumble was amazing! Our server was also really friendly and attentive to the point she remembered who ordered what which is rare in restaurants these days. We will be back!

Food is so delicious, I always buy the fish and chips! Would definitely recommend this great restaurant to others!

Amazing as always, the food and service are always the best you can get !

I have been to Murgatroyds before and always enjoyed it. However, this time I was a little disappointed in the food. The chips were lukewarm and the fish, although tasty, was more batter than fish, in so much as some big clumps of batter that were thick and dry and had no fish inside. The young man who served us was great, very efficient and friendly. It was just the food itself that, this time, was under par. I will think twice before going again that's for sure.

Superb value. Very friendly staff, well cooked and very tasty food... Not at all greasy. Bonus is takeaway stays open until 10pm. Highly recommend. Travelled 12 miles just for takeaway... that says a lot.

Best fish and chips you will find, absolutely beautiful food every time. Feels a bit harsh giving the service only 4 as this is a very busy place and I do sympathise but little things do get missed now and then. Portion size makes up for anything though.

Ania, an excellent lady who served me with a pleasant manner. Very proficient in her work. Food was a very good standard, but the plate was cold. I prefer a hot plate. Everything else was just lovely. Crockery exceptionally clean. On occasions with other restaurants the crockery has a feeling of grit. But no such thing with Mergatroid. Well done all staff in the kitchens, cleaners, waiter, waitresses.

Right well a bit to say here. We have visited here for my father’s birthday every year over the past ten years. Unfortunately it’s slowly degrading in quality and service. Maybe because we are a large group of 12, I don’t think that’s the reason. It feels as though the care is not there as it’s always busy, knocking out below par quality because it’s turning it out. It’s a shame because it’s a loved family occasion for us. Onto the food. This time the chips were dry and seemed to of been sat for a very long time, see the attached of my Billy Murgh special below. They did remove from the bill with a quiet wire at the desk. On a plus, the fish was 7.5 out of ten, but again room for improvement. Service wise. We said they could have sold us a lot more drinks if they had been more attentive. I had to go searching for the staff for drinks. I found one on the other side of the restaurant, 10 mins after speaking to the lad they managed to take an order. It was a shift change but whereas the manager sorting this out. Low on staff today not sure ! however there’s another £50 on top of the £28 of chips removed from the bill Murgatroyds have lost. Need to ship up i’d say, consistency is absolutely key. I reckon I’ll be suggesting a new place for our next family get together. Hope they can turn up the quality. 🙁

Good sized portions beautifully cooked and good selection.

All the essentials are great and there's a bar so you can get a beer with your fish & chips. 4 stars only as we were seated in a booth which is very narrow and hard for those less mobile to get in and out of easily.

Best Fish & Chips I ever had in my life.

We came from Portsmouth to spend this weekend in York, we heard that this place makes England's best Fish and chips so we were gonna go here but our car broke down on the way here so we came here to eat while we waited for the mechanic to come. Anyway the food is amazing and filling, the service is perfect and the atmosphere is friendly. Everything you hear abt this place is true. (This place does make the best fish and chips)

Fantastic food and service, lots of choice but went for the Billy Murg special and it didn’t disappoint, good value too if you want mushy peas and a tea.

Myself and my brother visited here today. What an experience. The food was beautiful. Couldn't fault it at all. The waitress could not do enough for us. Lovely restaurant. Exceptionally clean. Would definitely recommend anyone to eat here. Will definitely be visiting again

Creamy mushroom was very tasty and creamy! Impressive starter! The big Un was really Massive, in the size of a keyboard. Even though it was large , it was cooked perfectly, crispy and not oily! The ice float , Biscoff smoothie , sherry trifles and Joe sundae all very good, we had a good time here.

The fish portion was massive and really well cooked! Service was good. Tends to get quite crowded.

Son wanted to go for his 16th birthday to challenge himself to eat the whale sized portion of fish. Great service and good food.What more can you ask for

Best fish and chips in England.

Excellent quality and service as usual. Fresh white fish fillet and lovely chips. We are now retired but have been in this business for over 30 years. We travel 30 miles round trip for these fish and chips and have not been let down yet after 5 years. Keep up the good work guys.

Don't get the hype, definitely had better too much grease underneath the fish which obviously made it soggy, chips very dry, after travelling over 30 miles after reading the reviews we were very disappointed.

A nice visit and fantastic, plentiful food. We were sat in the backroom which lacks some of the charm of the main room.

Had Lasagne was very nice others had fish and chips tonight everything temp wise was not as hot as usual and end was getting evil glares because we were talking

I absolutely do not recommend this place!!! Exactly a moment ago, my partner and I were treated very unpleasantly by one of the staff members (a young lady with glasses, blond hair). At the entrance, we were literally taken out to the end of the restaurant to another room, where in the first room there was a lot of free space!! I suspect that we were isolated on racial grounds because the first room was dominated by people of British origin. My partner and I left this place without explaining anything to anyone due to fatigue after the long flight and the language barrier. A very big minus considering such a famous restaurant, the staff should be more qualified…

Cracking fish and chips. Both the take out and sit in restaurant service is spot on. Prices are very reasonable. Size of a standard fish and chips is more than enough for 1.

Had takeaway and ate in the car , not done that for a long time. Excellent fish , chips could have been better but depends on potatoes used. All in all lovely.

The most delicious fish offered with excellent service in a very friendly manner. The portions are enormous so they provide containers to take your leftovers home. This was our first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There are other dishes available too.

Used the takeaway today. Beautiful fish (massive) and chips with a portion of scampi. The scampi is fresh and well cooked and the prawns used are nice and juicy. Cannot fault the place. Highly recommend. Have also eaten in the restaurant (love Betty) and the food is equally as delicious. I especially like the burgers they do (I know, I know it's a fish restaurant!!). The haddock in breadcrumbs is my other favourite, and as for the desserts - the lemon meringue pie and the vanilla slice cake are my favourites; the tiramisu is very nice too. They do a good value senior special three course meal. I recommend this to anyone wanting top notch fish and chips and a scrummy dessert to go with.

I used to love fish and chips at Murgatroyds. Service used to be good and the food was always excellent. I don’t know what happened but on my recent visit the service was appalling and the food was not worth the price. I’ve had better fish and chips at much cheaper places. My wife and I used to think of going to Murgatroyds as a special treat, something to look forward to. I think in future we’ll stick with our local chippy; the food is much better and it’s a lot cheaper.

Haven't been here for years since we moved away from the area. How disappointing to return and not enjoy it. Only had time for take away fish and chip supper which was served quickly and the staff seemed friendly and helpful. That was the good bit, food looked ok but fish portion although large enough was tasteless and the chips were far too greasy - neither could face finishing them. More taste less oil please but I suspect we'll never return to try again. Disappointing.

Came Into Murgatroyds as it was recommended by a friend, so thought I would test the theory. Well as I walked in the door i was greeted warmly by the 2 members of staff behind the counter who was shortly joined by a third. They were polite and courteous, whilst not being pushy. I was shown the range of options and given a bit of friendly advice on portions. Now that said (staff were fantastic) let's get in to the food...... 1 word, outstanding. The 2 of us enjoyed a hearty meal that we ate inside the takeaway section of the shop. We were going to go outside but engaged with a bit of banter with the staff and it was more enjoyable to stay Inside and enjoy the rapour. It took a while to eat our lunch as the portions were large... I love getting value for money and I definetly got that here. Very much on point and can't recommend high enough. And NO am not related to anyone of the staff, I just appreciate a good service. Thanks

A busy place closes at 21.00, which seems a little early considering how busy it was. Service very good food, okay range on the menu is huge, maybe do fewer things better? Vegetarian section on menu.

I thought it was great, staff were really friendly. Very popular restaurant, people were queuing out the door to dine when we arrived and the que was constant. We decided to have fish and chips to go. Even though they were busy, we got our order pretty quickly considering. We had a large haddock and chips and a regular haddock and chips. The mushy peas were some of the best I ever had. For the portion size, I believe it was well priced. I would be more than happy to come back and would recommend it to a friend.

Me and my sister came here yesterday because we was walking back from the airport and it smelled very nice so we went in and got fish bites thinking it'll be small but it were huge and the taste was amazing and the gravy they gave us was absolutely smashing. Best fish and chips I've ever had

Chips good, fish I would say is average. Certainly not the best in the UK as I’ve seen people say. Anstruther Fish & Chip shop if you want to try a proper fish supper!

I came across this place through social media and hands down I can say this is the best Fish and chips I’ve had in my life, and I’ve had fish and chips that claim to have won awards. There was a que when I got there but the service was fast. Customer service was also amazing, l’m not from the area and the lads at the counter were thoughtful to help out with directions for shops. I went for the Billy Murg special, and for the price and the quality you can’t go wrong. I had to eat this fish in 3 intervals and I’m a really big guy at 100kg. For the same price you will get average fish and chips in London so this place is definitely a gem, glad to have found it. Will be coming back and bringing the friends for this place.

I had the haddock and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce. Everything was excellent. The fish was perfectly cooked and the curry sauce was the best I've ever had. The portion sizes were large including the Yorkshire tea that came with an additional pot of hot water. Great service as well. An exceptional value for the price.

Visited this Diner quite a few times whilst over from Northern Ireland to watch Leeds United,the quality of the food is marvelous and me nor my friends have been let down ever, the waiter, waitress service is second to none, will no doubt call in this weekend after Plymouth game whilst staying at premier inn airport.

Came here with a friend for fish and chips on a sunday afternoon. There was a queue to get in, we had to wait almost half an hour to get a table (takeaway is available next door and there are benches to eat outside, but we wanted to sit in the restaurant). We ordered a special haddock w/chip and a special cod. The special haddock comes with a pot of tea (or coffee). When it arrived, I thought there'd been a mistake bc there were two pots, but one was just hot water so you could dilute the tea to your liking. This is the first time I've seen that and, as someone who likes a strong tea, I think it's pure genius. The food was fantastic. The chips are the softer style chippy chips, my favourite. The portions are large. We ate at 2pm and were full for the rest of the day. Price is very reasonable all things considered. The service is also excellent. Our server was really friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is the restaurant is pleasant too. Lots of families and older people having a nice meal out.

Had pensioners special. £15.50 each. My husbands birthday 86 so splashed out on the prawn cocktail. £2.50 extra. I had Yorkshire puddings with onion gravy.then haddock and chips with peas and then fruit crumble with pouring cream on the side so you can pour what you want and treacle sponge and custard. Tea and bread and butter. 2 glasses of tap water with a slice of lemon in it. All lovely and served by a lovely beautiful smiling waitress Ellie. As I have had a knee op and on walking sticks I used the disabled toilet for the first time. Obviously didn't ask a disabled person for advice when making it. The toilet so so low I didn't risk it. Needs to be at least 2 inches higher.

Had to wait a while. Seemed plenty of empty tables but queue seemed to move slowly. HOWEVER once we were sat at the table the food and service was exquisite. The fish was beautifully cooked, soft on the inside but crispy but not overdone on the outside. Chips excellent to. My 97 year old mother in law was well catered for. Enjoying her soup and wonderful fish and chips and enjoyed her special. Didn't have room for cheesecake so took it home and believed very much enjoyed the following day. The waitress also made sure she was looked after and gave professional calm service despite the amount of people around. Best fish and chips in Leeds for me.

I reckon I know good fish and chips. Fresh firm tasty haddock with big flakes of fish. Perfect peas and very nice chips. I got the big haddock, and it was huge. Fish cooked in beef dripping, chips in veg oil, Im told. Great value, too.

Welcoming front aluminium double glazed IR motion detecting track mounted automatic dual sliding doors, followed by a high torque low speed dual IR motion detecting automatic self opening swing doors. Nice! And they sell fish and chips. Nice friendly staff, and good tasty food.

Brilliant service, staff are very professional and always work hard. Nicky served me, his funny characteristics and charm makes the experience much more enjoyable. Always very patient and get the food out to you as quick as they can. would 100% recommend!

Bit expensive.but lovely fish . think the mushy peas and tea or coffee should be part of every meal .we didn't realise this until we went to pay.

My 1 star rating for food was based on something that WASNT fish and chips because the pricing of the fish prompted me and my colleague to order something else off the menu. We opted for an Ultimate Burger I think it was called. It was not pleasant. It felt like one of those burgers you got in a can from back in the day. It was rubbery and had that "old meat" taste. Can't explain it properly. Atmosphere spot on, lots of people in here, I think we were the younger crowd on the day and the service was great. Next time I think I'll actually try their speciality but just wasn't prepared for it costing £18 on this occasion.

Staff were lovely but the food, venue and atmosphere were all pretty average over priced for taste but good value for size.

We had the best service from ed who looked after us. What a champion he was, the fish and chips were outstanding and the service was amazing.
