Murgatroyds in Leeds

Presented nicely but fish was very clearly old. Wasn't eatable. First time I tried I won't be back.

We tried to eat in there is a minimum buy i have stomach problems and my freind had just come out of hospital so all we wanted was 2x chip curry sauce 2 drinks and for 4xslices of bread and butter they sat us down I am transgender my freind is cis the only reason we was asked to leave the restaurant trans is lgbtiqa+ are not welcome

Amazing fish....thick and chunky.

What a wonderful place, my good lady and I dined here today, what a pleasant experience, chose the senior special 3 course menu, so much to eat we had to take the cheesecake home in a box. We were looked after by Janice who is a credit to herself and the restaurant. Can’t recommend enough.

Have been visiting Murgatroyds for 20 years and always loved their food but,the last two times we visited,I found that they had changed their mushy peas!Also, the cooking fat they use to fry in, ( beef dripping?) did not seem as tasty.Was so disappointed as Murgatroyds stood head and shoulders above all other fish and chip restaurants in Leeds but I feel something has been lost.🫤

You really need to book in advance. Really large portion.

Excellent food and great customer service

I have been dining at this excellent restaurant since it opened some 30 years ago. It is rare that after so long I have always found it to be First Class. The staff are excellent and very pleasant & jolly. Very recently they have introduced new serviettes . They must be the very best in any fish restaurant. Well done all at Murgies. Amazing fish, batter and chips, nice interior, friendly staff. Highly recommended. We drove from rotherham, which is around 30 miles, and we will be visiting again.

The reviews online were good, the food looked ok at first glance, but... with each bite of fish you felt like you were eating fat... the potatoes for fries looked like they had been lying in the basement for 3 years. Only the beer was good. Overall, 3/5, avoid. You can go for a good meal 200 meters away to the White Swan.

Excellent food, worthy of a Michelin star in my book. Best enjoyed during quiet hours, staff can get overwhelmed due to the popularity of the place, but if you have a fantastic product that's to be expected!

Best chips from a chippy I've ever had they cook in beef dripping and veg oil if you prefer

As always, food was excellent. I had the prawn salad and my wife had fish and chips. There were plenty of prawns on the salad,couldn't fault it. The fish was cooked to perfection, proper crispy batter. It's definitely value for money. Our waitress was Sandra,who was very pleasant and professional ,the service was very good. I would highly recommend Murgatroyds

Muy buen restaurante... aunque nos quedamos helados ya que otros comensales insistieron en tener todas las ventanas abiertas, lo que nos dio una brisa debajo de la mesa! Pero estaba muy decepcionado de que tuvieran pasteles de pescado tradicionales de Yorkshire en el menú... la comida era encantadora...

Have not found a better fish and chips in the UK, gluten free, and cooked in beef fat, large fish, flaky and fresh... You won't be disappointed if you go :)

I drove 1 hour to get here and although I have eaten in some very good chippies recently, I think Murgatroyds deserves the top spot. Every part of the meal - fish, chips, peas and curry sauce - was delicious and the prices are very reasonable too. And the 'regular' portion is huge. (I'm glad they don't do the "Big 'Un" on the takeaway menu as I would have had to try it and likely regretted it.) Unfortunately it's 90 minutes away from me and so I won't be able to come as often as I'd like, but I think I'll make the effort every now and again.

I've been craving proper fish and chips for a while and Murgatroyd's was on my mind to fix my craving. It's a long time since we were last here and if anything it's better now than it was then. There seemed to be available seating even though the restaurant was busy and I liked the wide isles between tables. Our waitress Jan was fantastic and within moments our order was taken. I opted for the haddock special and the boss had the cod special. My word the fish was MASSIVE and perfectly cooked, it was so big it made the portion of chips look small but in reality small it was not. Absolutely gorgeous, I did my very best and left only 2 garden peas. Please don't change. Great food, great restaurant and great service. Well worth the round trip from Liverpool

Absolute waste of time trying to book….. good food but absolutely disgusting to have disabled people queuing up outside…. Try and book on the day…. No booking’s….. try and book the day before no bookings….. I will never set foot in the place again…… it’s a joke..!!

I visit the UK from America pretty often, and this is always the best fish and chips! Atmosphere and phenomenal service are a plus as well!

We drove about 50mins to try out hereon a sunny Friday, and WOW it did not disappoint, we had fish & chips, the batter was super crispy yet light and the chips were perfect, I had mushy peas the hubby had curry and both were and to none, the portions were massive. We ate on the bench outside in the sun and it was lovely, well worth a visit. And we will be back. We had fish & chips with peas. Fish & chips with curry, chips n curry, chips and gravy and 2 cans of shandy and it came to about £35 and worth every penny.

The fish bites are the best value for money, bar none!

Murgatroyds is a busy but worthwhile fish and chip restaurant to visit. Make sure you pre book a table to avoid disappointment as the restaurant is very popular.

Great restaurant. We had the cod (huge) and fishcakes with cheesy filling. Both were excellent. We sat in a booth which was cosy. Didn't book but had to wait 20min or so (Friday 12.30pm).

Fantastic fish and chips. We had the big un as a birthday treat and it was fantastic. From the first bite to the last one I could manage the taste was excellent. Service great and the restaurant was lovely inside

Wow, stopped off for fish & chips at this gorgeous restaurant after collecting our family from the airport. The food was plentyful and delicious, just what we needed. We were served by Ed, who was just amazing in every way. Thank you Ed for being friendly, kind, attentive and extremely helpful. You made our visit extra special and you shone like a shining star.

I ordered a regular haddock fish and chips and had the biggest surprise of my life. I've had 'special' fish and chips quite often, but not one of them beat this. I thought there were two stuck together, it was so thick on the plate. It was lovely, and the chips were perfect and crisp. I live near Huddersfield, so quite a distance away. But as Arnold once said, "I'll be back" thank you. Ps, staff were excellent too.

Been a few times now but went last week with my parents and grandparents. Its a nice building inside and out, food is amazing, the fish and chips are superb and staff are friendly. My only complaint is the seating, not very comfortable, felt really small like half your rear end is off the seat and I dont even have a big rear end lol Apart from that we all had a good time and meal

Arrived around 4.30pm. The queues ( 3 of them ) were so long. For inside and take away. We was finally served after an hr. The fish( haddock) was very dry, the edge of the fish was chewy. Batter was nice, and the chips were lovely. My granddaughter had a kids meal and loved the sausages. Sides were also nice. My daughter had burger with chips and said it was one of the best burgers she's tasted!. 3 fish and chips , 1 burger and chips a kids meal and 3 sides with 3 breadcakes came to £65 .

Had a fantastic server, Damien, who went out of his way to make every one of us feel special. We were in a party of 8 and although we didn't reserve a table it wasn't a very long wait. The fish are enormous (even the small serving), the chips are great, and the curry sauce is extremely tasty. 👌 The bill can be split at the till so working out who owes what was not an issue.

We had a 15 waiting time for a table, but it was worth the wait. Excellent food and reasonably priced. And good portions. I had the special and was really full afterwards.

After queuing in the freezing cold with a 91 year old in a wheel chair for 55 mins while there was at least 6 tables free . I will not be going again. Not well organised at all.

Murgatroyds Fish & Chip Restaurant is conveniently located near Leeds Bradford Airport. During my stay, I struggled to find a good fish and chips spot and was really missing that classic UK experience. Luckily, I came across this restaurant on my way back to the airport; and it was a fantastic choice! The food hit the spot and left me feeling very satisfied. A perfect way to end my trip. I’ll definitely be back 😊

This place is absolutely amazing. From the food to the service. I had the Billy Murg special with mushy peas, also side of curry sauce & battered sausage. The food arrived piping hot & tasted delicious. For dessert i had the chocolate orange cheesecake with strawberry ice cream, this was amazing. Service by waiter Damien was perfect. One of the best fish & chips restaurant I've ever been too. 10/10.

Travelled up from Oxford to visit my daughter at uni and take in lunch at Murgatroyds...what a retro treat that was excellent surroundings, excellent food, excellent service... cant wait to go again on my next visit... well done Murgatroyds.

I had read so much about this place and looked forward to going for a long time. We were able to tag it on a day trip to Ilkley and build up an appetite by a long walk on the moor beforehand. It certainly lived up to reputation. Beautiful fish and chips and huge! Although I did have the extra large, it was probably the biggest fish I've had in a fish and chip restaurant and cooked to perfection. Really very happy with this visit and despite the fact that it's clearly very successful, the staff were charming and friendly.

Best fish and chips in the world, period. Extremely popular and expect to queue on a weekend. I live in Cambridgeshire and regularly take a trip to Yorkshire just to visit this place.

Travelled all the way up from London but stopped in Manchester on the day before just to come and have the haddock big Un with two pots of curry sauce and chips and it was absolutely delicious and the staff were so friendly and definitely can't wait to come back up again. The fish and chips were so delicious and I was glad that I made the long journey up just to try it based on the reviews I had seen on social media. The fish was so big and crispy, it actually took me 3 days to finish it. Can't stop talking about it to people that I know are from Leeds.

Wow what can I say but this is a must go again..

Fish and chips done right!! We went for the "Big Un" to take away and shared it. It was prepared on request and came with a decent size portion of chips. I have to say that this is the first time everything was pretty much perfect, the batter was thin, crispy, and tasty and wasn't over greasy. The fish was plump, juicy, and tasted amazing, and the chips weren't like the usual boring and bland filler you often get.... even the peas, often a let down being toxic green or tasteless, we're spot on! Backed by pleasant and attentive staff, this place is one to try. Even though we shared it, it was more than enough, and we'll definitely be going back. It's just good that it's a 120mile round trip, or I'd be round!! 😀

Waited for about 25 minutes for a table and was about to leave.Glad we didn't, 3 course seniors menu £15.95 with bread butter also tea and coffee.Excellent portions, fish was amazing can't recommend highly enough.Marie our server was very attentive.

We’ve just moved into the area and have quickly become regulars at Murgatroyd’s and it’s no wonder because the food they serve is delicious big generous portions and priced very fairly. this visit we had the pleasure of being served by Chloe who was very pleasant and diligent. She made sure we felt welcomed and was very bright and cheerful. We absolutely love coming here and are happy to keep coming back.

We nipped in to Murgatroyds for a Friday evening meal en route back from the airport. Understandably this place has a massive reputation and was incredibly busy (as they should be on a Friday night!) Parking was fairly straightforward but we arrived at about 5pm so a bit before the evening rush. Tables were packed but we were seated relatively quickly Going inside is a little like stepping back in time 30 years but in the best way possible, it’s really quite charmingly traditional in decor and I quite like that the style has been maintained so well after all this time. I ordered a small fish and chips while my husband had scampi and fish and chips. Portion sizes were exceptionally generous and even though I ordered a “small”, I couldn’t finish mine! The menu has everything you’d expect from a traditional fish and chip restaurant and quite a bit more, and it was great to see special offers for senior citizens. That being said, it is definitely not a cheap meal out. While I think their reputation justifies a bit of a premium, it was rather more expensive than I had expected. My meal was good, but my fish was a little dry which was disappointing given the price. The batter was lovely and light and crisp however. My husband’s scampi was really nice and I think I’d order that instead next time. I wish I had saved room to try one of the desserts as we saw some fantastic retro looking sweets coming out for other tables! We will probably visit again if we are in the area.

Went there today from burnley fish and chips were beautiful worth the drive lovely friendly staff will visit again

Usually nice but last visit the fish was so over cooked , took a lot to cut , was rubbery. Didn’t complain as was with friends for a long overdue catch up but won’t be returning anytime soon. Visit was 2nd March, not sure if others had same experience . It was 3pm and food may have been made hours before ?

Food is spot on, cannot fault it
