Excellent curry sauce, great peas and good chips. The fish was ok, wasn't the best gravy but not bad by any means. Overall, a good feed. Above average for sure. Really generous portions and excellent service.

Excellent food, service & atmosphere. It was very busy when we arrived around 3pm and we had to queue, only for five minutes or so though. We both had the Murgatroyds specials, which included peas, b&b and tea and was only £1 more than a regular size f&c with the peas, b&b and tea. Fish was huge and I hardly ate any chips, I'll be ordering a regular next time. Hubby finished all his though, but said a regular would have been enough. Lots were having the 3 course pensioners special for 60 or overs, £15 and this is served every day. Good place for a meet up 👍xxx

The owner is illegally sharing photo of customer that allegedly forget to pay on Facebook. Completely not professional, if it’s true that they didn’t pay, first it could be an honest mistake and then it’s not your job to do justice yourself there is a police station for that. ( I hide the customer face in my screenshot but in the real publication on Facebook, he didn’t. )

My wife and I, are regular visitors to Murgatroyds. Both of us are over 60, so we take advantage of the over 60's menu, which we find superb value. The food is excellent, as is the service. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

Always really nice Fish, the starters are nice too, portions are quite large. A starter and a main is more than enough to fill you for the rest of the day .

Just picked up simply a large chips to have at home and sorry to say but they were awful. Scrappy chips with lots of crispy, inedible bits but worst of all was the taste and texture. They tasted and smelled greasy and terrible. Just about the worst takeaway chips we’ve had from anywhere.

Great food, service was brilliant. The only downside was it was queuing out of the door and we had a table booked and we weren't aware we were allowed to push pass everyone

The fish I had (haddock) was absolutely beautiful. When I looked at the menu, I was considering getting a larger portion. When my standard size turned up I realised what a mistake this would have been! Filled the plate, and it was fried to perfection. Not super cheap but perfectly reasonable cost for a beautifully prepared meal, and nothing is cheap nowadays anyway!

Highly rate this place usually. Like every time the fish was lovely. Meaty and Crispy. Chips were a little underdone I felt this time.

I only get fish and chips a couple of times per year here Quality 10/10 but you always have to wait ages to get them. Good that they are really fresh but frustrating the wait is so long.

This was my best fish and chips experience in the UK so far. 90 min drive just for the food. Wow, just amazing.. Perfect seasoned and battered fish and chips. The staff are very courteous and lifts up your dining experience. Hats off to them. The ambience is great. Very bright and colourful with music as well. Definitely recommend anyone who loves a good dining experience. It's was a busy Saturday noon and still they did a great job. Had to wait in queue but well worth it.

We had a great experience at the restaurant, it was worth to pay a bit more than the takeaway area, we ordered the biggest size of fish and chips, it was a monster haha. Just one thing, it would’ve been nice to hear advice from the waiter when we ordered, we were 2 people, the biggest size is definitely enough for 4 adults.

Brilliant restaurant and takeaway with quality food at reasonable prices. Recommend the pensioners special (age dependant of course). Varied menu as well as fish and chips all at reasonable prices. Good childrens menu. May be a queue to get in due to it's popularity

Excellent food .But miserable older lady with blonde hair and glasses seated us literally showed us to table and dropped menu's and walked off. A friendly approach would of been better.

Had to circle the extremely tight carpark four times before finding a parking space. Maybe the owners could look at extending the car park due to how busy they are, but this just shows the food is of excellent quality and value for money.

Great food and very consistent. I've never been and thought the food wasn't as good as last time. I've only ever been in the takeaway, so can't comment on the restaurant. The prices are fair for what you get and the service is very good. The only thing I would change is doing the battered sausage like the fish or spam fritters. I don't know if they cook the sausage first, but the batter doesn't sit the same as it does on other items. Still nice though.

There is nowhere better for Fish & Chips!

Been wanting to come here for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Billy Murg special was fantastic. Fresh, beautifully cooked fish, chips and curry sauce bang on, and a stack of bread to mop up with. Lemon Meringue Pie is an absolute treat afterwards. Very busy and had a small wait to get a table but more than worth it. Fantastic service all round and even seen my deam future wife, the stunningly beautiful angel who showed us to our table. To whoever the perfect brunette with the glasses may be, you have my heart and I confess my everlasting love. Murgatroyds is exactly what the slogan says, best fish and chips around!

Please can you open a franchise in London? Murgatroyds is what I miss most about living up north!

Excellent Service and wonderful piece of cod, which was way too big to finish it all. Will be back the next time I'm passing the area. Forget the rest just go to the best place in town.

Visited on 30/12/24 for the first time in a while as we now care first and elderly relative who has dimentia, thought we would take her along with us. The food was lovely, Billy Murg special excellent and cooked lovely. Everything we had was very nice. Our nan had the seniors menu, and while it is good value, she just can't really eat that much, we went for a juice starter and the fish and chips main and then a pudding. She ate the fish but not the chips or mushy peas, she's 86, probably a child's fish and chips would do her but would feel cheeky asking for this, would be good if there was an option to just have a seniors small main course. Next time, we will perhaps just ask for no chips as we don't like wasting food. Anyway, we will have a look and see if other options are available next time.

After a lovely Christmas nativity afternoon in Baildon Church. We stopped off for an enjoyable Saturday early evening of fish & chips musy peas b & b washed down by a pint. Best described as tasty. Nice one Murgatroyds. Near Yeadon Airport.

We went because I'd seen lots of amazing reviews on social media. It was busy, but I had pre-booked a table. We had the haddock and chips and curry sauce. The waiter was a young lad who was brilliant. Very polite and couldn't do enough for us. The food didn't take long to come but it was disappointing. The bowl of curry sauce was on the small side. The chips were too thick for me, and the fish was OK, but I didn't rate the batter. It was ok but not memorable or better than a local chippy. I won't be going back unfortunately.

Took over an hour and a half from arriving to getting served in the restaurant. Food was good when it eventually did arrive just frustratingly slow. Lady welcoming guests at the entrance was unfriendly and unwelcoming.

Mediocre food in a not very attractive place.

We have passed this restaurant many times but have never had the time to call in for a meal..because we had time, we called in on the way to the airport, we were blown away with the whole restaurant, the food was so freshly cooked and each course was brought to us with a smile. We had the OAP menu and have to say it was fabulous. We are so impressed, we are calling again on the way to the airport on the 19th and are looking forward to enjoying another late afternoon meal in your restaurant. I would recommend your restaurant to anyone, what a find!!! In fact, we're bringing relatives with us on the 19th because they have never been before and only live in Bradford and are too looking forward to trying it for themselves. Thank you so much for beautiful food and hospitality, we look forward to coming in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year to you all.

Called today at lunchtime we usually eat in the restaurant but used the Take Away today. Yes it was busy but we were so impressed how organised it was. You ordered when we went in and the fish was cooked fresh and piping hot, big fish and good portions. Best fish and chips in Yorkshire. The young girl who served was so polite and everyone she served prior to us she said enjoy you’re meal and have a nice day, just that personal touch made people smile, I asked the young man on the till her name, he said Lucie I said she’s a great asset to you’re team. 5*

What a great place to visit . I had seen it on tick tok and thought I would try it. Had the haddock ( billy size ) Well it didn’t disappoint it was big, batter was the best I have tasted for over 30 years( old school ) The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. I can normally finish everything i order but I can honestly say it beat me . About 1/6 of the fish left and 1/4 chips . Will be coming back here again .

We haven’t been to Murgatroyds for years and our latest visit did not disappoint. We had the two courses menu - the servings were massive, the fish was fresh and beautifully cooked, and the crumble was amazing! Our server was also really friendly and attentive to the point she remembered who ordered what which is rare in restaurants these days. We will be back!

Sadly below par today. Restaurant very busy. Had a quite a long wait to be served once we were seated but didnt mind waiting as staff under pressure. My husband's fish was OK but mine was mostly inedible very dry and chewy. Not up to usual standard. Left half of it. Waitress finally came to see if everything OK. Advised not but she just shrugged and said I should have said something earlier. I would if anyone had checked earlier. Will seek alternative next time we fancy fish snd chips.

I have been to Murgatroyds before and always enjoyed it. However, this time I was a little disappointed in the food. The chips were lukewarm and the fish, although tasty, was more batter than fish, in so much as some big clumps of batter that were thick and dry and had no fish inside. The young man who served us was great, very efficient and friendly. It was just the food itself that, this time, was under par. I will think twice before going again that's for sure.

Superb value. Very friendly staff, well cooked and very tasty food... Not at all greasy. Bonus is takeaway stays open until 10pm. Highly recommend. Travelled 12 miles just for takeaway... that says a lot.

Best fish and chips you will find, absolutely beautiful food every time. Feels a bit harsh giving the service only 4 as this is a very busy place and I do sympathise but little things do get missed now and then. Portion size makes up for anything though.

Ania, an excellent lady who served me with a pleasant manner. Very proficient in her work. Food was a very good standard, but the plate was cold. I prefer a hot plate. Everything else was just lovely. Crockery exceptionally clean. On occasions with other restaurants the crockery has a feeling of grit. But no such thing with Mergatroid. Well done all staff in the kitchens, cleaners, waiter, waitresses.

Right well a bit to say here. We have visited here for my father’s birthday every year over the past ten years. Unfortunately it’s slowly degrading in quality and service. Maybe because we are a large group of 12, I don’t think that’s the reason. It feels as though the care is not there as it’s always busy, knocking out below par quality because it’s turning it out. It’s a shame because it’s a loved family occasion for us. Onto the food. This time the chips were dry and seemed to of been sat for a very long time, see the attached of my Billy Murgh special below. They did remove from the bill with a quiet wire at the desk. On a plus, the fish was 7.5 out of ten, but again room for improvement. Service wise. We said they could have sold us a lot more drinks if they had been more attentive. I had to go searching for the staff for drinks. I found one on the other side of the restaurant, 10 mins after speaking to the lad they managed to take an order. It was a shift change but whereas the manager sorting this out. Low on staff today not sure ! however there’s another £50 on top of the £28 of chips removed from the bill Murgatroyds have lost. Need to ship up i’d say, consistency is absolutely key. I reckon I’ll be suggesting a new place for our next family get together. Hope they can turn up the quality. 🙁

Good sized portions beautifully cooked and good selection.

All the essentials are great and there's a bar so you can get a beer with your fish & chips. 4 stars only as we were seated in a booth which is very narrow and hard for those less mobile to get in and out of easily.

Our experience at this restaurant was amazing, the food was perfect and it was way too big for the plate and for our stomach as well 😄 The service was lovely and the athmosphere was perfect and friendly. Thank you 🙏🏻

Best Fish & Chips I ever had in my life.

We came from Portsmouth to spend this weekend in York, we heard that this place makes England's best Fish and chips so we were gonna go here but our car broke down on the way here so we came here to eat while we waited for the mechanic to come. Anyway the food is amazing and filling, the service is perfect and the atmosphere is friendly. Everything you hear abt this place is true. (This place does make the best fish and chips)

Myself and my brother visited here today. What an experience. The food was beautiful. Couldn't fault it at all. The waitress could not do enough for us. Lovely restaurant. Exceptionally clean. Would definitely recommend anyone to eat here. Will definitely be visiting again

Creamy mushroom was very tasty and creamy! Impressive starter! The big Un was really Massive, in the size of a keyboard. Even though it was large , it was cooked perfectly, crispy and not oily! The ice float , Biscoff smoothie , sherry trifles and Joe sundae all very good, we had a good time here.

The fish portion was massive and really well cooked! Service was good. Tends to get quite crowded.

Son wanted to go for his 16th birthday to challenge himself to eat the whale sized portion of fish. Great service and good food.What more can you ask for

Excellent quality and service as usual. Fresh white fish fillet and lovely chips. We are now retired but have been in this business for over 30 years. We travel 30 miles round trip for these fish and chips and have not been let down yet after 5 years. Keep up the good work guys.

A nice visit and fantastic, plentiful food. We were sat in the backroom which lacks some of the charm of the main room.

Don't get the hype, definitely had better too much grease underneath the fish which obviously made it soggy, chips very dry, after travelling over 30 miles after reading the reviews we were very disappointed.

I absolutely do not recommend this place!!! Exactly a moment ago, my partner and I were treated very unpleasantly by one of the staff members (a young lady with glasses, blond hair). At the entrance, we were literally taken out to the end of the restaurant to another room, where in the first room there was a lot of free space!! I suspect that we were isolated on racial grounds because the first room was dominated by people of British origin. My partner and I left this place without explaining anything to anyone due to fatigue after the long flight and the language barrier. A very big minus considering such a famous restaurant, the staff should be more qualified…

Cracking fish and chips. Both the take out and sit in restaurant service is spot on. Prices are very reasonable. Size of a standard fish and chips is more than enough for 1.

Had takeaway and ate in the car , not done that for a long time. Excellent fish , chips could have been better but depends on potatoes used. All in all lovely.

The most delicious fish offered with excellent service in a very friendly manner. The portions are enormous so they provide containers to take your leftovers home. This was our first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There are other dishes available too.

Used the takeaway today. Beautiful fish (massive) and chips with a portion of scampi. The scampi is fresh and well cooked and the prawns used are nice and juicy. Cannot fault the place. Highly recommend. Have also eaten in the restaurant (love Betty) and the food is equally as delicious. I especially like the burgers they do (I know, I know it's a fish restaurant!!). The haddock in breadcrumbs is my other favourite, and as for the desserts - the lemon meringue pie and the vanilla slice cake are my favourites; the tiramisu is very nice too. They do a good value senior special three course meal. I recommend this to anyone wanting top notch fish and chips and a scrummy dessert to go with.

I used to love fish and chips at Murgatroyds. Service used to be good and the food was always excellent. I don’t know what happened but on my recent visit the service was appalling and the food was not worth the price. I’ve had better fish and chips at much cheaper places. My wife and I used to think of going to Murgatroyds as a special treat, something to look forward to. I think in future we’ll stick with our local chippy; the food is much better and it’s a lot cheaper.

Haven't been here for years since we moved away from the area. How disappointing to return and not enjoy it. Only had time for take away fish and chip supper which was served quickly and the staff seemed friendly and helpful. That was the good bit, food looked ok but fish portion although large enough was tasteless and the chips were far too greasy - neither could face finishing them. More taste less oil please but I suspect we'll never return to try again. Disappointing.

A busy place closes at 21.00, which seems a little early considering how busy it was. Service very good food, okay range on the menu is huge, maybe do fewer things better? Vegetarian section on menu.

Came Into Murgatroyds as it was recommended by a friend, so thought I would test the theory. Well as I walked in the door i was greeted warmly by the 2 members of staff behind the counter who was shortly joined by a third. They were polite and courteous, whilst not being pushy. I was shown the range of options and given a bit of friendly advice on portions. Now that said (staff were fantastic) let's get in to the food...... 1 word, outstanding. The 2 of us enjoyed a hearty meal that we ate inside the takeaway section of the shop. We were going to go outside but engaged with a bit of banter with the staff and it was more enjoyable to stay Inside and enjoy the rapour. It took a while to eat our lunch as the portions were large... I love getting value for money and I definetly got that here. Very much on point and can't recommend high enough. And NO am not related to anyone of the staff, I just appreciate a good service. Thanks
