Booked a table for Sunday lunch (7th July) We arrived 10 mins before our booking only to find it was closed? There were also a number of people arriving who had booked a table and others arriving as hoc. There were 2 people inside in the kitchen area, who at first totalling ignored us and then when we knocked on the door and got the lady’s attention, only to have her shake her head at us? She didn’t answer the door. There was no sign on the doors to explain why it was closed and they didn’t answer numerous phone calls!! Terrible way to operate a restaurant. They’ve lost our custom but we gained a lovely place around the corner, Lavan, where we will visit in the future. Get your act together Coal Rooms. What are you running - shambles!!

I've been here recently for a roast and for dinner. The beef wellington roast was amazing, though expensive, and the dinner dishes were also quite tasty. There's something lacking overall, though, that makes it an unappealing environment - it was a little cold and the music was far too loud and more suitable for a bar than an eating environment.

Food was overpriced but worse was they hid the fact that the menu they use is excluding VAT so full price only became apparent on the bill, further reducing the cost. The service was lacklustre.

I travelled to eat breakfast here, based on a Google Maps search which yielded a photograph of a full English breakfast and a prominent review which said the full English was amazing. Turns out that they don't do any cooked breakfast here at all. I'm sorry to give a one-star review when I didn't eat there, but the guy behind the bar told me that I'm not the first to fall foul of this misinformation, that the management is aware of the problem but haven't corrected it, and anyway he's leaving in a week!

Try Levan next door. Coal Rooms, where the service is poor, the food is below average and the bill is large. To their credit, they took our main courses off the bill. Our experience could have been a blip, but I wouldn't give them another chance to prove otherwise.

Atrocious service. We visited on Sunday for a roast. My goodness the staff could not have been more disinterested / inattentive / plain rude. One of the chaps looked visibly hungover and was yawning constantly. We waited around 20 mins to get a drink and a further 20 to place an order. Staff did their best to avoid eye contact. Very disappointing experience and wouldn't go back.

Seriously good dining experience. The dining room seats about 32 people, and is small, intimate, but I wouldn't say crowded and has plenty of natural light. Service was great, very pleasant and prompt. The roast is absolutely fantastic, and the smokey aroma locked into the meat is amazing. It's expensive (£30 for a roast) but the wine list is good, starters are good, and the portion size was good. One of the best dining spots in Peckham, and one of London's best roasts.

Food was very high standard, care and attention was paid to every part of each dish and all were busting with flavour, only slight quibble is on the sides, the sea bream came with literally nothing on the side so I needed to order both chips and vegetables which was about £15 total on top. Both were very tasty but adds a lot to the cost of the meal

Food generally good but the price do not justify the overall quality 1/5 of the meet was impossible to eat, it was a bad cut. White whine good quality but temperature wise no. Staff very smily but luck’s communication, barely have knowledge of food&beverage. Dessert, good presentation but it is not what it claims to be. Overall, 3, but lots of room for improvement.

My friends and I had a weeknight dinner at the Coal Rooms after being recommended it by a friend. The food was delicious, the range of drinks superb, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Highly recommend the Coal Rooms for anyone who is looking for an up-market and atmospheric dinner. The restaurant section, where we were sitting, was nicely-lit with ample room for each party. Only minor gripe was that the service wasn't as effective as it could have been.

Food was good, but the service was very poor. We visited on a busy Friday night. Ordering wine first, whilst studying the menu, the bottle failed to appear and finally after a ridiculously long gap we were told the wine was out of stock, which rather limited your options as there are only a few white wines under £40 a bottle on the wine list. Our bread and small plates arrived promptly, but there was a horrendous wait for our main courses from the grill. Our chop and steak arrived only after we had been in the restaurant for two hours. The accompanying sides were of very varying temperatures. Waiting staff were friendly, but no getting away from the poor food delivery.

PECKHAM RYE STATION... opened on 1 December 1865 for LC & DR trains and on 13 August 1866 for LB & SCR trains. It was designed by Charles Henry Driver (1832–1900), the architect of Abbey Mills and Crossness pumping stations, who also designed the grade II listed Denmark Hill and Battersea Park stations between here and London Victoria. The Coal Rooms were the old Ticket Office within the station, now refurbished with chic decor. The Water Closets... 'toilets' have the original Victorian fittings! The staff are friendly and welcoming. Delicious variety of pastries 😋 Great place to relax and enjoy the footfall of passing passengers going about their everyday lives. Dog-friendly 🐕 Definitely will return & thoroughly recommend this establishment.

The Coal Rooms in Peckham for a Sunday roast has got to be in the top 3 in London I've tried. As you walk in the open fire barbeque smell is something else (in a good way of course) You get taken to the back into a cute room for dine-in bookings. Friendly staff, nice vibes, excellent choice of food and drink. Quick service in terms of the food being ordered and onto the table. Couldn't help but try the pudding as well. Wow! It's within the complex of Peckham Rye Station which is an excellent easy access station to get to with plenty of connections. Solid A***** LDT x

We had a Saturday evening meal here. The steak was very good. However, it was over priced, at £60 for the steak only (no sides etc). The toilets were completely unacceptable. I am confused by the other reviews saying they are lovely. The floor was wet throughout, nowhere to put toilet roll so they were scattered on the wet floors! Walls were damp and mouldy. For the price of the meal, you at least want a clean toilet.

Decided on Sunday lunch at Coal Rooms after a number of recommendations. We could not fault the food however this was tarnished by the standard of service. We had no issue with having to wait 15 minutes for our table to become free but after a further 15 minutes at the table, we were still to be served. After requesting a bottle of wine with one waiter only to be told 5 minutes later by another that it wasn’t available didn’t help matters. It’s also the first time we’ve been offered tap water, only to be charged when the bill arrived. It took 90 minutes before we were served food in the end. The starter was cleared, only to be asked if we wanted a desert menu. The request to knock the service charge off the bill was taken gracefully but there was no apology or enquiry by the waiter as to why we’d taken that decision. At £120 for Sunday lunch for two you’d expect better service. Sadly we weren’t the only table frustrated. A large table to our right were visibly annoyed at the lack of attention as well. This knocked the atmosphere somewhat in the upstairs room. This didn’t look to be the case downstairs.

UPDATE: I originally left this review because I didn’t love the food and felt that what I received during my dining experience with Coal Rooms wasn’t worth the price paid. This is a perfectly fair and valid thing to do as a consumer and should require no further justification. In the weeks since this review was left, the business has reacted to my review in frankly the most unhinged manner. Initially they called me wanting a justification for my review. It was awkward, but I was happy to explain what my issues were. I thought a line would be drawn under the whole thing then. However, a few days later a member of their staff decided to stalk my social media accounts. He found my small business and ordered something just to leave a bad review, using the exact same phrasing as I had used on the phone to his colleague (which was the giveaway.) To trawl someones social media, find their business and go to the trouble of buying something, purely to leave a negative review is completely malicious and frankly, wild behaviour for a grown man acting on behalf of a professional business, but thank you for the £3. This whole experience has made me so uncomfortable, and has left me wondering what further they plan to do with my information which was provided in good faith to make a booking. As a small business owner I understand it’s never nice to receive negative feedback, but the way you react to it is so important as a business and these guys have really gone above and beyond to intimidate me.

Had an Easter lunch here in the afternoon with my significant other half. Started with a sumptuous Bloody Mary (though no celery and glass was erring on the smaller side for a £10 price tag) and some very tasty sourdough with butter that was the perfect consistency for spreading. Oysters were also a tasty starter though they were meant to come with a green sriracha that did not show up unfortunately. We then proceeded to have the beef wellington and smoked chicken roasts. The sides were exquisite as was the cauliflower cheese. The smoked chicken was perfectly cooked and had a significant smokiness to it but unfortunately that was it. Some Herbes de Provence, lemon or garlic would have been very welcome as the overbearing smoky flavour left any other remnant of acidity or seasoning running for the hills. The beef wellington however was very good, though it was disconcerting seeing this pre made massive beef wellington left out on the side by the entrance all afternoon immediately next to diners coming and going with no glass/plastic protection (for good hygiene). Two Americans sat next to us and came and left within 45 mins without eating their Yorkshire puddings (I was gobsmacked as this is my favourite accompaniment to a classic Sunday roast but each to their own). We sipped a bottle of 2021 Sancerre that was excellent and the wine list looked to hold its own at first glance. No dessert as we were stuffed though we did have to ask for the bill twice. Overall the atmosphere was very good (good lighting, good acoustics, friendly staff) and we would come back again. However I think that for £24-35 per main plus an expensive wine list (plus 12.5% service change) Coal Rooms could iron out a few kinks to make it truly memorable, better value for money and one of Peckham's top fine dining establishments.

The food is wonderful here, but only IF there is actually any left. Pretty disappointed as went for my wife’s mum’s birthday and they were limited in terms of having anything on their menu. Just been today, having made a reservation during the week, and they had no oysters, no steak, no beef, no lamb - could only offer chicken or vegetables for main. Total waste of our time and wish they simply hadn’t taken our booking as they must know that they are cautiously conservative with ordering. One of the staff came outside to apologise afterwards and offer a discount for next time when we left having realised there weren’t any of the mains we’d come for. Hopefully that offer will actually materialise because as much as we enjoy the food here, it’s getting very annoying coming only to be offered the remnants of what’s in the back. Better organisation would be much appreciated! Otherwise, I just don’t think we’ll bother again.

I'll preface this review by saying I've eaten here twice before and had great experiences. Unfortunately that's not the case this time. It was obvious on arrival that there was a state of chaos, which was borne out by being ignored for ten minutes. After this, we were sat in the foyer to the restaurant by the front doors. Not a great spot, but perhaps good for getting quick service. Wrong. It then took another 20 minutes before we could even get water on the table, and then another 10 minutes until someone could hunt down what they described as they only wine menu available in the restaurant (which looked like it had been retrieved from a bin). In trying to rectify the situation with the staff, we were essentially fobbed off; it was clear that they didn't really care if we stayed or left, so we decided to leave. I can heartily recommend the Montpelier around the corner which had all of the warmth, calmness and politeness that the Coal Rooms were lacking.

Does not make the cut for me. The good: nice wine list, nice space, neat, clean open kitchen, nice server. The poor: 1. MENU CONFUSION Website sample menus indicate available options of a tasting menu (costs 45 pounds) AND separate entree plates. However, on our Thursday visit, the only menu was tasting which we did not have the time for nor did we want that much food. The saving grace, when we explained to our nice server, was that they would let us pick and choose from the tasting menu and charge us accordingly. So that was a win. 2. FOOD I chose 3 starter courses only and the amount of food was fine for what I wanted. The scallop dish was very nice, the other two not so much. The mushroom dish was an ugly unidentifiable lump of black that had been literally drowned in soy sauce. The only taste was soy sauce. VILE. My last starter was charred leek with a large amount of a slightly bitter peanut sauce and, like the mushroom dish, the sauce totally overpowered the delicate leek. Three of my dining partners ordered the lamb entree which was nicely presented. However, they weren't asked what temperature they would like but all 3 plates came with different degrees of doneness. No consistency. Finally, I would expect bread service here but none was to be found.

Mediocre experience on our Saturday dinner. I wanted to visit this restaurant for a while and invited another couple of dinner on a Saturday night. We had the 5 course tasting menu. It was not bad but not too inspiring either. Given that I am a big fan of lamb, I chose it as my main and it was the most disappointing lamb dish I have had in a long time. More than half of it was pure fat and it was even worse for my wife, she barely had any meat at all. The best dish was charred leaks. In addition to the whole experience, it was utterly freezing in the dining room. I understand it was a cold evening in London but we should not be wearing coats (as did quite a few other guests) when we are paying over 100 pounds per couple. We ate and wanted to leave ASAP. Overall, it was not a complete disaster but a disappointing Saturday night and we will not come back or recommend this restaurant to any of our friends.

I had previously visited Coal Rooms for a great coffee in the morning on a few occasions. I visited again recently for dinner with a friend and was blown away. The kitchen is on show and you can see the grill smoking all sorts of delights as you are seated. The menu was fantastic from start to finish, and I particularly enjoyed the lack of choice — just a set menu with dishes you will absolutely enjoy. Service was fantastic from start to finish, with each server going out of their way to ensure we had a memorable evening. They even brought us a drink on the house at the end of the evening. The architecture and history of the building itself is also magnificent. I’d recommend a visit to the restrooms to see the history of the building — I assume they are relatively unchanged from when this space was part of the wider Peckham station building. A really fantastic spot for coffee, for brunch, or for a special dinner in the heart of Peckham.

Have been going to Coal Rooms on and off since it opened and I’m glad it’s got its swagger back with an interesting menu and delicious food, and I’m always well looked after and made to feel welcome by Amy and the team. Happy to be a regular again and lucky to live around the corner. Keep it up team Coal Rooms.

My husband and I visited last Friday for the first time on the back of a friend’s recommendation. Overall, the food was lovely and nice enough atmosphere and service, but not quite extraordinary. We paid c.£150 for 2 in total (incl set menu, £12/person supplement for steak, one cocktail, one soft drink and service charge). For this price we didn't think it was quite worth it given the plethora of other options available in London Some more details: 1. The food - this is the reason we’re intrigued to go in the first place, so here’s our take: Entree and starters: We like the entree and starters the most, it was different and very tasty. Everything was well-made from ingredients, sauces to diversity. The sourdough with seaweed butter and hand cut crisps were delicious! For the beetroot salad, I’d liked the dressing to be on the side as I didn’t like it as much. Main: The steak itself was good quality and well cooked, but we don't think they added much value to this already fine steak. The greens and potatoes were fine, but that’s all. We didn’t think it was worth the additional £12/ person supplement. Desserts: The pear tart dessert came with compliments from the staff. The puff pastry was really nice, but we found there was v little of it compared to the pear, sauce and crème fresh, the ratio could’ve been more balanced. Also we’re not a fan of cooked fruits generally so would’ve been nice to have other option(s) for dessert. The set menu: The overall quantity of food was great, there’s probably more than enough if you get the steak (we have to take home some leftover veg and potatoes), so maybe suitable if you’re v hungry! Personally I also think the set menu is unnecessary. The smaller dishes were the best and I would’ve probably come here more just for this. It’s a bit of a price tag to have the full menu, particularly with cost of living rising! 2. Service/ atmosphere: the staff were lovely and attentive, bringing new dishes and clearing them out timely. We never felt rushed or ignored even though they got quite busy later on. That is what we pay service charge for so it’s what I would expect. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, I’d say it’s modern relaxed dining space. 3. Booking/ timing - We made the booking through Resy, which allowed you to book from 6pm for dinner on Friday. Google says they’re open at 7pm. To be fair, they did just finish setting up and open at 6pm “on the dot”, but it means you’d have to wait if you’re early. Personally I think Resy should just start booking on the system slightly later so you don’t feel like you’re rushing the staff and have a bit more time to settle in. Side note: we didn’t realise there would’ve been a £12/person supplement upon ordering. The staff hesitated when we asked for it saying she’s not sure if it’s part of the menu, so she went away to check. She came back to confirm and could’ve told us it is included for the price supplement then. It could’ve just been more transparent upfront. (the menu says 12 instead of £12)

Came for Sunday roast. Food was delicious and service was impeccable, marked it down to 4 however because the portion sizes of the veg was a bit stingy. For the premium price they charge I'd expect more than 3 roast potatoes.

Absolutely incredible food - the steak was a standout and the hake was also delicious. Loved the touch of cods roe under the peppers. Some of the best food I've had recently in London. Plus the building and toilets are also gorgeous and the service is the perfect mix of friendly, attentive and relaxed.

We celebrated our wedding there on Wednesday and everything was perfect. The table setting was exactly how i imagined, the service fun and impeccable and the food absolutely delicious - the menu was really varied and every dish was surprising and really tasty. The friggitello peppers, the caramelised apricots over burrata and the steak tartare were the highlights but it was all delicious. All the guests loved it and so did we. Thank you Amy & team for a great, great day.

What a lovely restaurant. The Coal Rooms is full of atmosphere and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. I could not fault the service received at our table, especially Ben. He is certainly a wonderful asset to this lovely place. I loved walking in and seeing the chefs working and they had and took the time to welcome us, whilst obviously busy working. I loved so many choices and the fact you could share courses so you had the chance to try so many different tastes and new adventures with food. I recommend this restaurant highly. The food was amazing, I love fine dining and exploring and experiencing new restaurants. This place is up there with the best. We'll done chefs!!!!!!!with these guys working there definitely a place to revisit I will definitely be back.

We had three generations around the table for breakfast which included chocolate brownies, waffles with ice cream, amazing cheese toasties and avocado with sun dried tomatoes and bacon! Apple juice and a mocha, white flat and black Americana. We were silent for 15 minutes as we enjoyed every mouthful, a coffee shop made with love!

On our way for a short stay in Ramsgate, we were pleasantly surprised when we stopped here for lunch. It was a Monday lunchtime and the pub was quite busy. Friendly and prompt service at the bar. Monday is pie day so for £12 I had a choice of pie with fresh vegetables and chips. Pudding was included. Chicken and ham pie was delicious. Cheesecake offered with cream or ice-cream. Really generous portions of everything. The beer was very good too.

The owner is so rude there was a homeless person in there asking for the left overs and he laughed at her and said there was none which in fact there was loads of food left over he should be ashamed of he's self there was no need for him to laugh at her
