Located at the heart of Trinity Square, beside The Octagon (Local Studies Gallery) within the Central Public Library. The Muffin Break Bakery Cafe is perfectly positioned to soak up the views of the oldest architectural landmark in Colchester - the 1000 AD Saxon Tower and the birthplace and residence of two major Colcestrians 📔Author of De Magnete - 1/Dr William Gilberd and 🎼Madrigal Composer - 2/John Wilbye. The ecclesiastical relics can be enjoyed from the generous outdoor seating (the only ones in Trinity Square). The café is designed tastefully and simply. Opposite we have 🏫Tymperleys Tudor Mansion, birthplace of Dr William Gilberd, Physician to Queen Elizabeth I and James I. The coffee offer is on par with it neighbours (☕Costa, 🥐Pret, 🧜🏽♀️Starbucks, 🏛️Nero) and at a similar price point but the food offer is more substantial - from full English breakfast, to filled crossaints, hot club sandwiches, red velvet, coffee and walnut cakes to various vegan delights. Muffin Break has a really good energy - it's spacious, warm, generous and has lovely lighting - it's always very very busy. The baristas are professional, organised and friendly, working well as a small team. My only critique would be to add new washrooms, and increase the number of WCs. Perhaps introduce more robust, larger tables (for co-working/reading) with comfortable lounge chairs in reading nooks (now that the Public Library next door will close for 366 days), it's ideally located to receive avid Readers. Having arrived in Trinity Square in 2019-20 it has weathered well, but a refresh of the interior architecture would always be warmly welcomed by residents and visitors. Overall 10/10

Appalling over priced inedible good. £10.90 for a breakfast. Requested no beans or tomato. Asked for extra mushrooms. I got 2 small single mushrooms. The bacon was like leather shoe bottoms. The sausage was solid. The eggs over cooked and the toast so burnt and tough the knife could not cut through it. Such a shame when it is in a lovely location in the centre of town

Staff lovely! Muffins I’ve tried on several occasions pretty bland was very disappointed . Considering the name of the shop you would think that muffins would be special!

What has put me off coming again is not the over price, weak coffee, and also the sandwiches that are supposed to be hot are Luke warm as best is that I saw serveal staff members trying to fix the disabled toilet with a spoon. I don't know now they dispose of the spoon, but I saw them walk through the cafe towards the kitchen area.

Staff are awfully rude and continuously get everyone’s orders wrong. Ever since new people have taken over it has gone down hill. I wouldn’t recommend at all! won’t be returning

Staff are terrible. Particularly the two blokes I presumed are something to do with the franchise. Waited 20 minutes for a latte which was more expensive than Starbucks, half the size and was essentially a cup of warm milk. First and last visit.

It is expensive for stale bagels with hardly any filling. Coffee is very average. Will not bother again. Mentioned to the staff about our food (4 bagles) being stale and the reply we received was "oh okay" we will not return

Went through the drive through today (3 April, 3:30pm). The drink (Frappuccino with cream) was given overfilled and not properly closed, it was spilling out and there was no way to close it. Spilled all over the front of the car while I was trying to close it trying to stop the sticky leaking but made 100 times worse. The car was a sticky wet mess!

Aimee, thank you for making our bottomless brunch so lovely. You had a bar full of people and you worked so hard to make our celebration so special. You are part of our memory now. Thank you to the chefs for amazing food and everyone else who worked so hard too. Xxxx

Fantastic. The building is full of character and boasts one of the most charming interiors of any weatherspoons. Be sure to look out from the stage area and see how many famous faces you can name. Good prices, and decent staff. The kitchen is usually pretty quick, but can be hit and miss with the porridge and rhamen bowl (bit too much water). That aside, very good place, and always busy.

We went to Milsoms on our 59th Wedding Anniversary though we did not mention this. Initial greeting and drinks service quite prompt and our food order was taken. Alas we were fed up with waiting as it took over an hour for 2 curries to arrive. Overpriced and mediocre, we decided not to spend any more money with them. As we left, my husband complained about poor service and were surprised to be told it was our imagination and it was 1/2 hour only.As we are not youngsters, perhaps they thought we had dementia. No apology and no money off and the arrogant manager seemed quite pleased with himself.Alas, we will not be visiting again. About 16 plates of food were ferried past where we were sitting. I rest my case.

We met some old friends for a drink and food at the Kings Arms in Crouch street. The pub itself is very pleasant and the staff were very pleasant as well. We decided to order food. I ordered the Scampi at £15 and the ladies each ordered the grilled cheese which was £10.at that price I was expecting a really exceptional Grilled Cheeses with artisan bread and great cheese and a nice side salad. Describes as “ A medley of mature cheddar cheese and emmentsl with bechemel sauce in a toasted farmhouse loaf”….What they actually received was beyond appalling, 2 slices of processed white bread with a slice of plastic processed cheese no obvious sauce and a small bland salad.. I’ve had similar cheap toasties before , typically paying £2.50-£3 but to charge £30 for these sandwiches is nothing short of criminal. The scampi came with 13 chips and 7 normal pieces of scampi and 3 tiny pieces that were 90% breadcrumbs. Compared to other local pubs such as the Princess Charlotte this was similar to the “light version”. I would never recommend eating at this pub although as a drinking hole it’s very pleasant .
