Mr Villa's in The Vale of Glamorgan

This was our 5th visit, every time we go it’s such great food and service I wanted to leave a review. An independent family owned restaurant that blends fine dining with a lovely friendly atmosphere. Fresh fish specials every day that never disappoint I cannot recommend it enough.

We all had a fantastic family Sunday lunch. Wonderful friendly staff , food was delicious- we will be back for the festive menu . Thank you !

Expected a more sophisticated menu. Clams with butter sauce was pleasant as a starter. The rest was' expensive' fish and chips. A sauce would have been good with the sea bass. No extras such as bread as part of the service.

We have visited Mr Villas a few times and the fish is as good as we have experienced anywhere. Fresh and beautifully cooked. It’s always reassuring when a restaurant runs out of certain cuts or fish and doesn’t resort to frozen options.

Rude staff!! Went in for a take away & the staff were so rude & arrogant that we walked out!! You missed out (over £200 odd bill) here… your loss

Sadly disappointed with the quality and atmosphere of the experience. Tables inside packed tightly together even though only a handful of dinners were in attendance for Sunday lunch just as well as there is only a single Male and Female toilet. Food just making it into the average not the experience that will make me return.

Another excellent meal and the staff and atmosphere are always good. I was lucky enough to get the last Dover sole which priced at £36 was very good value. The only criticism I would offer is that the chips don’t taste as good as they look. I don’t know what oil they use but I’d prefer something else. We’ll be back though.

You can get fish here that you would not find easily elsewhere locally. Price is a bit steep which is to be expected for a fish restaurant. Service was pretty muddled. Ambience was OK for the day / time we visited

A lovely place we just happened to find as we were exploring Barry. We had fish and chips the fish was beautifully cooked. The chips were ok. I had a lemon drizzle cake afterwards it was nice but it was a bit dry. I asked for some cream and that made it better. All in all very nice and worth a visit. The staff were lovely. The toilets were very clean and well equipped.

Great food here although it has a habit of closing for a few hours in the afternoon then re-opening later . Would be better to just open later and go right through the day

The food and atmosphere here were both lovely, but the cost of the food seemed high for what was delivered. Staff were wonderfully friendly and accommodating.

Another fabulous early evening meal last night. Food, service, ambiance faultless. Crab tart, baked hake, cherry and almond tart washed down with excellent bottle of Provence Rose.

Absolutely amazing!!! The service was another level of attentive!!! Our waitress ( sorry I didn't catch your name) was super informative of the area and couldn't cater for us enough!!! Thankyou!!! The food - well wow!! Where do I even start!!! We started with oysters and sardines which was just a dream, followed by the seafood platter, which I'm 100% going to return for just for that!!! If you're in Barry, get here, it's a hidden gem with immensely wonderful food and wonderfully friendly staff, defo worth the visit!!!

We had an early Christmas dinner with our parents and it was absolutely superb! The food was outstanding - arguably the very best fish restaurant in Cardiff - and the staff were so lovely, we had such a lovely evening! Thank you so much!

An excellent family restaurant. Welcoming from the moment we arrived. Beach-side atmosphere even in winter, yet cosy. Excellent cod and chips, cod with a herby crust and baked hake: fresh fish, decent portions, offset by simple yet tastey sauces and sides. Once course lunch without alcohol was a shade over £20 each. Definitely recommendable.

We had a lovely lunch here this week. We were warmly welcomed and received attentive service throughout. My husband and I had three courses. My starter was a really tasty roast fig with goats cheese, wrapped in prosciutto. As a main, my husband and I shared a whole Dover sole, which was fresh and delicious, together with chips and a bowl of veg as an extra. We’re happy that we went for the sweet, which was a great homemade Italian cherry and almond tart. We’ll definitely return!

Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Food was delicious, had to ask for an extra potion of chips for the three of us, but that didn’t detracted from the meal. Food was very fresh and the fish was light and really enjoyable. Will definitely be returning next time we are here.

Fish and the chips tasted good but portion small and no way was it worth nearly £20. We felt a bit cheated. Eat in prices are way to expensive, need to look at reducing for what should be an affordable meal out.

Bit late doing this review, but we enjoyed a birthday meal here after Lockdown in August. As it was very warm that day, we sat out the back courtyard and enjoyed the cod & chips (the chips are lovely) , a bottle of white wine and a few ice-creams and cheesecake. We were served by the very young lad and the staff were wearing masks and gloves and did their best with all the Covid rules. Afterwards, we did our usual walk around the park opposite. We have been here several times and always enjoyed it and will no doubt be back again soon. Parking is usually easy in the car park behind the restaurant , which is free, or sometimes you can get a space at the front. If you enjoy fish give it a try but I believe they do roasts on Sundays aswell.

Visited Sunday, 20/09/2020 for snack. Shocked to find that an extremely small slice of average tasting cake was £4.95! We had made mistake of misreading the slightly ambiguous notice-board advertising ‘Coffee & Walnut cake or Lemon drizzle cake £4.95’, which we took to mean coffee AND either of the cakes for £4.95 in total. It didn’t mean that, so in fact either slice of cake was £4.95!!!! We paid, of course. We decided that the best way to avoid getting ridiculously over-charged and eating the priciest small slice of cake outside of Mayfair was to never re-visit. To be fair, apart from not getting much change from £20, the staff, service and coffee were fine.

We were fortunate to get a booking on the day we had in Barry. The menu was limited but provided sufficient variety of food for my family of 5. We all enjoyed our food and founds the service very friendly. The portions were decent too.

We walked from Barry Island to this restaurant. It was a lovely friendly place. The food was delicious and good portions. I gave it four stars because there were a few things on the menu that had run out.

Lovely family run restaurant, all staff wear masks and gloves, the service was a bit slow but understandable as they’re short staff due to current situation. I had king prawns with garlic butter with a side of spinach which was so tasty and would recommend to order this dish. I would prefer if the dish was served on one big plate rather than small dishes. People may find the portion small for the price but the portion was just right for me. I would definitely visit again.

Covid19 well done with most of the team. Young girl with glasses did not have mask over her nose throughout the time we were there, bit of education needed. Food nice but small portions and very expensive for small portion of cod and chips. Bit basic to just have cod and chips, choice of normal peas or salad would have been good. Wine and beer warm. Popped to the Knap on a friday evening for a walk and some fish and chips. Cute little restaurant, looked promising! Chips were great, fish was tasty but small. Could've labelled the boxes as my son ate my hake as we didn't know which one it was as they all looked similar. Would recommend curry sauce and also some sort of vegetarian option. Appreciate that things are tricky at the moment but staff were a bit rude. They forgot my daughters chips (vegetarian) so we had to wait for them which meant our other food was a bit cold. Didn't apologise much either. Ate in the park opposite which was nice.

Just has a lovely lunch here. We have travelled to Cape Cod many times and Mr Villa’s restaurant has the same feel.

My friend and I arrived late lunch time, excited for fish and chips as the name suggested only to find out it was sold out. A little disappointing but it was later on in the afternoon so never mind. We sat down, and the staff seemed to forget we were there! I asked the waiter if we could please have two menus, and then he strolled off and stared into space by the food counter. Another waitress then kindly brought over menus after five mins or so. The wait for food wasn’t too long, but this is unsurprising as the portion sizes were rather small.The calamari for example (see image attached) cost £8.50. This is what it looked like before we touched it. This felt a little cheeky to be frank.

We recently had a family meal here and absolutely loved it. It was busy but they weren’t rushing to turn tables and that made a really relaxing atmosphere. The staff were really great, chatty and accommodating. Everyone enjoyed their food- all courses. Garlic prawns as a starter were delicious! I’d highly recommend.

At the end of a day when we had said farewell to a dearly loved member of the family we needed good food at a reliable retreat. We found it here with attentive staff and fab food. Not cheap but worth every penny. Thank you.

Wow! What a find...we came to Barry for New Years Eve & love seafood so thought we’d give Mr Villas a try, The restaurant itself is lovely; well thought out decor, friendly and welcoming staff, nice ambience. Great selection of seafood as well as non-fish options. We were told on arrival that something on the ‘Specials Menu’ wasn’t available because they couldn’t get it fresh that day - for us this was a great sign, that they are serious about quality, fresh seafood. Our starters were delicious and our main courses were divine - the Seafood platter includes a half lobster which was incredible! Definitely eat here - wish we lived locally, to have this place on your doorstep would be such a treat.

Not the first time we have eaten here. Both times let down by the service. The meals we have had were very good especially the muscles. The drinks bar does not seem to co-ordinate with the food cooking bar. (Had to go to collect our own ice from the bar having asked for it twice!) meals took a long time to arrive and on both occasions the meal of the day that we wanted had run out. What we ate was very good. Would recommend but book.

Came here to celebrate an 80th birthday. What a find! We converged from all over the UK in Barry and this restaurant was recommended to us by a friend of a friend - we were not disappointed. The menu was comprehensive and we could have easily worked our way through it. Service was excellent - all waiting staff were well turned out polite and very helpful. The manageress was a dream. We can recommend:-Roasted cod - beautifully cookedSeafood linguini with prawns and mussels - gorgeousRice pudding - ask for it with clotted cream, loved by everyone who had it. The service was very good - especially from the young waiter & waitress, the elder one was a tad intrusive but was pleasant enough. The surroundings were nice but I wasn’t impressed that all parts of the main course were individually priced. I had the hake but had to pay extra for chips and salad!! I feel that the basic sides should be included in the price as this restaurant isn’t cheap. I also found the dessert menu to lack choice and imagination. But we had a nice evening anyway

Met with some friends to celebrate a birthday midweek. For starters we tried the Pate (which was gorgeous) and the Mushrooms in Stroganoff sauce which were also very tasty. For main, three of us had the Trout which everyone enjoyed and I had the Battered Cod off the main menu with chips (which was very fresh and tasty). Compliments to the chef Simeon as we all enjoyed it as usual. As they close during the week after lunch, we didn't have desert as we were the last people in there so we went nextdoor instead for coffee and cake. Unfortunately, it was chucking it down with rain so we didn't manage our usual little stroll around The Knap. One of these days we must try their Sunday Lunch which sounds good too. We have been several times now and every time the food is great.

I'm not going to write an essay on Mr. Villa's. But our overall customer satisfaction was ok. We really like the food and we really dig the atmosphere, it has that medditeranean vibe we like. I had mussels, my husband calamari and my 6 year old son had fish & chips. Our food was fresh and super delicious. The service on the other hand needed improvement... they need to improve theire customer service skills to really get this place going! Food good, service not so good.
