Mr Chips in Croydon

This is the finest fish and chip shop in the area! I always get my food from here - the fish is lovely and crispy and the chips are just a chip-shop chips should be. If you love traditional fish and chips I thoroughly recommend visiting Mr Chips!

I go here regularly, the staff are always friendly and the food is very tasty!

Love Mr Chips! My family and I have been regulars for years , and even better Mr Chips came to the rescue as an emergency Plan B recently when a BBQ with friends got severely hampered by British 'Summer' weather - Thank God for Mr Chips! A big order phoned in for 15 people, all recieved freshly cooked, still hot on serving and the batter on the fish light and crispy. Delicious :)

This is our regular chippy, we eat there nearly every Friday night, kids love it too. Our fish & Scampi is always cooked to order so it’s piping hot, & it’s delicious, portions are plenty big enough for us! Girls on the counter are friendly…. . What’s not to like 😁

Ordered cod and chips for 4 people. Very disappointed with the food. Overcooked cod and tough to eat. Seemed to have been kept on the hot plate for a long time. Chips soggy and tasteless. Will never return. Staff were nice.

I ordered from here by mistake, so it was my first time at Mr Chips. It was getting busy, so my order wasn't ready. The good thing was the queue was going out the door. I was very pleased with the service and the food was still hot when I got home and it was not greasy compared with others chip shops in the area.

Second time I've ordered and problems with food quality/common sense. Beware of ordering online, because they make mistakes and fob you off because there's 'nothing they can do'. Shame because it used to be good there and I just wasted £20 on a few items.

Ordered sausage in batter and chip roll. OPEN £6.75. Sausage was over cooked chips were warm soft and mushy. Disgusting.chips were wrapped seperate from the Roll which tasted off. Used to be one of the best around. I won't be coming here again. Food, service has gone right down hill.

Just bought cod and chips twice - cost £23! Food was almost inedible. Fish was overcooked and chips were mixed in with warmed up chips. Will definitely not be buying from them again. Such a shame - it used to be so good.

Friendly cashiers, quick service and well sized portions

Maybe the worst fish and chips I’ve had! Old chips absolutely covered in old oil. This followed my 10mins of torture listening to two VERY YOUNG girls working front of shop.

I really like this local chippy, although it's not my 'local'. Never had anything but very good food, and as they often freshly cook for an order, they are clear about how long any wait is likely to be.

Really great food. Love the fresh chips made with seasonal potatoes.

Quality good but size of portions of chips has shrunk and quite expensive.

Over cooked hard chips that tasted of old stale oil. And to top it off a couple of bright red hard bits of goodnes knows what in the chips. This chip shop has really gone down hill recently. Will not be making a return visit anytime soon.

£3 for a portion of chips. I queried the portion size when served, I was told it was a regular portion. Literally a few handfuls of chips. Rip off( others have also mentioned in reviews). Won't return.

My family ordered via Deliveroo fish and chips from this restaurant and was violently sick with vomiting and diarrhoea. The next day other family had diarrhoea. This was reported to Deliveroo. Not ordering from here again.

Great food and fantastic service

Amazing chippy in London Low prices and high quality food with big portions Lovely service with the ladies (and gent) in there, always a big smile on their faces. Ordering ahead available and will have it ready for collection instantly and also have deliveroo if need delivery in a rush (prices are more expensive on deliveroo but this is because of the delivery app, not mr chips!) This is my standard chippy and will always go back here!

Never had a bad meal from here. Always my go to place when I want fish and chips. Light batter and never too oily! Also always greeted with a smile

The stuff are verily poor you order something to eat you expect to get home to have in the bag what you ordered but no get home to food missing also get charged for that food that is missing, and stuff expect you to go back down when it’s there fault

I’ve been going to this fish and chip shop for around 15 years. I don’t eat it often but I went Saturday evening and was so disappointed with the quality. The cod was meant to be a large yet was small. It was as thin as a cheap fish finger and completely tasteless. The chips were soggy and oily. They must have new owners because it is nothing like it used to be. So disappointing.

Bought two large cod and chips today, not cheap. The fish was tasteless, more like coley. Been to Mr. Chips for years, but this is not their usual standard. Very dissatisfied.

Extremely greasy over cooked fish and a very cheap quality sausage. Really disappointed and won't be going there again.

Lovely Fish n Chip's ! SOS no pic this time but was munched on receipt , was so nice I will be returning Monday for lunch and will add photos . Highly recommended guy's really good and there was no skin on fish , so no soggy batter ! Chip's were banging to .

We found this Fish and Chip shop and have been going past 4 years. We mostly order same things every time which is Large Cod, Large Chips and Chicken and Mushrooms pie however since last year everytime we go we get less portion of chips and the fish is also not large. They have changed their potatoes so they hold more oil and are more soggy and don't taste the same. I don't know how many scoops of chips constitute small and large portion as today's order as you can see from the picture doesn't constitute as large. The price has also gone up which is understandable however the portions and quality has changed which is not good. Last three to four times i've been things haven't improved which is disappointing..... bring back original potatoes and give customer correct portions.

Absolutely the worst chips I’ve had the mispleasure to eat. Oily, soggy and more like a bag of scraps than chips. Straight in the bin!!

This used to be the best chipshop in Coulsdon, don't know what has gone wrong . Bought 2 fish , 1pie ,3chips with peas and curry sauce : the chips were very greasy as was the fish the pie had obviously been microwaved and as usual I had to go back and ask for my peas . Don't think I will be going back .

Been out of the area for a while and hadn’t realised the shop had changed hands. Pre-ordered skate and chips. The skate was delicious but the chip portion was tiny. Will definitely try them again because the skate was so scrummy.

Freshly cooked Rock Salmon and excellent chips and curry sauce. Young staff always pleasant and cheerful. Never had a bad meal from this chip shop.

Went to Mr. Chips this evening to order fish & chips x 3 , a saveloy and 5 x curry sauces, no chip and pin, cash only, it happens, no problem, long queue, which is understandable for a Friday. Got home in Chipstead, only to find that they got the order completely wrong even though I asked the young lady to check if it was all correct before I left only to get ‘yes I checked it’, got home, they gave us three regular cod instead of two regular and one large, missing two portions of chips and a saveloy and curry sauces. Called them up only to hear they got my order mixed up with someone else’s. Had to go back to collect the rest, the owner apologised but no offer to compensate or offer anything for the trouble. After all, my dinner was getting cold at home. Collected and went back home, cod was cold, chips were not good at all, really starchy and the curry sauces had been severely watered down with no flavour and very cold. I just paid £28 for an average quality takeaway and below average customer service, not great. I have been to Mr. Chips several times before, fish was great, lovely fish, batter is crispy and light and the chips are normally okay’ish which I can live with but after this evening, I will just have try elsewhere locally, very disappointed! Shame as I love to support local businesses and we always go out of our way to do that for our local community.

Hi and thank you for reading my review. The food: Mr chips has a general variety of chip shop foods, ranging chips to battered sausage to fish. The chips a lot hot, soft, fluffy with a crunch everything you dig in. The sausage doesn't taste oily or cheap quality and the fish is thick and wide, very worth the price! The staff: Very delightful and amazing, making sure that everyone follows the social distancing rules and making sure that everyone needs are catered for. The building: The building is rather small however it's a fish and chips building, doesn't need to be big or spacious. It can fit an average of 5 in the building however due to Corona virus it has been limited to two people at a time. Overall, I always go here for my chips and I've never had a complaint for their food. would defiantly go again!

We always loved the fish and chips here for 6 years, gone downhill, last 3 occasions there has been mostly batter and the cod was poor quality, and the chips cold and soggy, service person off hand,, will never go back again, u have lost our business and our neighbours , Don’t touch this place with a bargepole!

After using Mr Chips for 6 years and enjoying them, we have had 3 horrible fish and chips in the last few weeks. The cod was mainly batter, the cod didn't taste as nice and was poor qualtiy. In addition chips were cold and soggy. Both my wife and I and our neighbours feel the same. Last time te fish and chips were almost thrown at me. ... DON'T TOUCH THIS PLACE WITH A BARGEPOLE! Go somewhere else this shop has lost our business and both our neighbours business.. Is this because Jim retired?

Cod and chips excellent. Very friendly service. Currently (May 2020), social-distancing is achieved outside the shop, so next time it rains, best to order on the phone. Last orders about 7:30 pm, as they are closing at 8 pm during the Covid-19 business. Delivery and payment at doorway.

Good quality food at reasonable price. At busy periods can queue outside. Parking can be difficult.

Really good quality fish and chips cooked to order.

The past two take aways from here have been absolutely delicious. The fish is freshly cooked and not greasy or soggy and the chips are delicious. It really has improved over the past few months and is one of the best chippys I have had.

Seriously gone down hill, we were regular customers to this local business as we support our local businesses. The chips were mixed with fresh and pre cooked chips (i.e from lunch time) When we complained we were told by a rude employee that there was nothing wrong with the chips. At least Jim’s could cook chips.

This place has good potential but, since there's been changes of staff, it's gone down hill. We came at 5:30pm today, 30 mins after they opened expecting good chips. Chips were brown and over cooked. Won't be returning!

HAD FAB FRESHLY COOKED COD & CHIPS TONIGHT. I've been using Mr Chips for 24yrs now, the kids love it too, thought it was time to leave an updated review since the new fryer has started there, & having had a chat with the actual owner last week, who's been there 30yrs! & is there daily overseeing quality, portions etc.... hence I'm a bit shocked to see the odd low star review, it's a shame that an unhappy customer cant go into the shop & explain the problem, which I'm sure would be rectified, instead of trying food once & jumping straight onto social media leaving scathing reviews. If I've ever had a small problem, staff have been happy to sort. I too asked why the actual chips are small, & it's due to the summer drought stunting potatoe growth, I remember seeing it on the news! Portion sizes seem o.k to me, as think the older guy that recently left dished out far too many chips for my appetite.

First and last experience of this chippy. Chips were overcooked and warm at best. Portion size was probably amoung the worst I've ever had from a chippy and the very small portion was full of little bits. Bad chips from a chip shop = bad chip shop

Very decent fish and chip shop. Takeaway only. Everything to order and tasty. None of that slimy grease you sometimes get elsewhere. Be prepared to wait for your freshly prepared order. Enjoy.

Small portions, for more money, also had to wait about 10 minutes to be asked what i wanted whilst a fat girl quabbled about the cost of her death row dinner order.. Would recommend Coulsdon chicken and fish for quick service and a better deal. This place cant even get chips ready, even though they are called mr. Chips! 😂 As for Catholic Friday's..get in the queue because it stretches to st. Aidens church ⛪. That's what no birth control gets you

5 star food as always, but really bad etiquette from the staff allowing people to shout orders over your head (because their order takes time to do) and your staff actually taking the order and them getting their order before the others queuing. Pointless having a queue you may as well say loudest voice orders first .

Always nice food. Can get busy, but that's cause it's good. Fast service so you won't have to queue for long.

The quality of the food is very much dependent upon which fryer is working. There are a limited number of meat pies available and they often seem to run out early in the evening.

I WANTED to love this place because of it's close proximity and parking right outside. However, I'm disappointed EVERY time I come here. The batter is ALWAYS soggy and the chips don't redeem the situation.
