Called in to Mr Chippy before heading home to Scarborough.The staff were lovely.We all had chips some with gravy and a battered jumbo sausage.I had chips ,battered jumbo sausage with scraps and curry with a wooden fork and we all ate them leaning on the 'bar' people watching out the window.The chips were definitely some of the best chippy chips I have ever had.Big lov e to the fish frier who is originally from Scarborough.Top scran

I order regularly order from Mr Chippy, I live in York. I am vegan and the pea protein fish and chips are simply 👌 the best. Updated review, they have a supply issue with the pea protien "fish" it's NEVER in stock. Last night I tried the vegan fish finger butty. It is not stated clearly on the menu, but the fingers are either made of quorn or they are cooked in with quorn, but lot's of people are higjly allergic to quorn and I nearly ended up calling an ambulance last night it made me so ill. !!! Think it time to say goodbye to mr chippy as I can only ever get chips these days. I have been a very regular customer for years.

Great chip and battered sausage and they do scraps ! Reasonable prices and service was pleasant.

They have a whole vegan menu which is great! Sadly the vegan fish was out of stock when I visited, so I went for the fish finger butty and chips. The butty was good but could've done with some ketchup, which unfortunately you have to buy separately in plastic sachets, which is both annoying and not very eco-friendly. The chips are great, fluffy inside and crispy outside, just as they should be! Overall an okay experience and I would go again next time I'm in York, but for heaven's sake please put a radio or something in the upstairs seating area - it's like walking into a funeral!!

I understand that it is a fish and chip shop and that it is mainly designed for takeaway, nevertheless I think that the level of cleanliness and maintenance of the room provided for those who eat inside could be improved. The Fish and Chips themselves were good, but the oil seemed to have been used often, over and over again. Furthermore, stopping in this place means filling up with the smell of fried clothes and hats, there is no hood...

Best fish and chips we have had in a very long time. The fish was beautiful fresh and the batter excelent the chips hot golden and freshly cooked. Well done Chippy man

DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE IF YOU HAVE A GLUTEN INTOLERANCE!!! I ordered the gluten free battered sausage and chips alongside gluten free calamari. I was violently throwing up a couple hours later, it was a horrible experience and don’t want this to happen to anyone else. AVOID if you are gluten free!!

I really enjoyed my vegan offering which was very tasty, and it was great value for money too.

Had fishcakes and chips. It was a very greasy meal, fishcake was not cooked in the middle, the chips had lots of green and bad bits on them. Worst fishcake and chips I have ever had, ended up throwing them away.😠

Haddock was lovely but the chips were green and tasted a little funny. upstairs seating up a very precarious staircase, and the windowsill had a giant hole to the outside

We visited it with my wife, we are from Argentina, we came on our honeymoon, it was the most delicious thing we tried in the area, the atmosphere on the 1st floor was very quiet, very good to work while enjoying a fish and chips, very good music, very cordial attention, really highly recommended!

Amazing vegan battered sausages! They have gluten free batter available too which was great. Staff were so friendly, helpful, and clued in to what was vegan and gluten free which is so helpful and not something you get elsewhere! The banana fritter was also amazing!

Just thought I would post about this bad experience I have had here at Mr Chippy in York. They have a Vegan menu as well as regular fish and chips so I thought they would be moderately vegan friendly. I went in and asked for Vegan fish and chips, they had sold out of the vegan fish which was fine, so just got chips instead. The server then asked me how long I had been vegan for, I replied about 10 years. He then proceeded to brag that 365 days a year he eats meat, and that fish are 'stupid', and said I shouldn't drink water as it has feelings. Bare in mind he said this whilst I was wearing my birthday badge as this was part of my birthday weekend. Awful experience, if I could do 0 stars I would.

had a fish and their home made chicken and mushroom pie, fish was absolutely gorgeous and the pie had excellent batter with delicious creamy filling. would recommend!

Unexpected treat for those of us of the veggie and vegan persuasion, a chippy with more than chips as a choice! Unfortunately the vegan fish wasn't available but the battered vegan sausage and chips was amazing. Should have tried some curry sauce but the ability to add my own preferred amount of salt and vinegar was a good substitute. Really pleased we came across this chippy while doing some of the snickleways walking route. Staff were really friendly and interesting to chat with, food was prepared really quickly and of a high standard and seating, even just in the chippy foyer was comfortable and welcoming. Would highly recommend.

This is a good quality fish and chips shop that has a small dining area and bathroom upstairs. It is not a restaurant, but if you are looking for great traditional fish and chips and somewhere to eat them in the centre of York, this is the place.

Some of the best gluten free fish and chips I've had. The gluten free batter was so crispy and perfect. Yummy!

Visited York for the Christmas Market on Sunday. Came across a lovely little chippy. The food was cooked fresh it was hot, tasty & value for money & staff was friendly. Will be visiting again. 👍Keep it up.

Absolutely disgusting, food was awful, hygiene terrible, box of frozen packaged chips just at the bottom of the stairs, upstairs in a random cupboard full of cobwebs is just an open tray of salt and a jug of vinegar which they are using to refill the salt and vinegar with cleaning products also on the same shelf as the salt and vinegar never ever will be visiting there again and wouldnt recommend anyone else doing so either also very overpriced and i have picture proof of this if anyone wants to see

Young lad behind the till dropped my sausage on the floor and picked it back up and put it back in the chip tray. He would have happily served it to me if it wasn’t for one of the chefs telling him to bin the full lot. Respect to the chef but that is really disgusting customer service. Retraining is needed for the young lad.

Fish & chips were soggy and tasted like they'd been sitting there all day. Got takeaway in a carton, bottom of which fell out a few minutes later. Luckily we were back at the apartment just in time.

This is the best chippy . Vegan menu, we had the vegan sausages and chips. So good. Can't post a picture as we ate it all. Mmmm Friendly staff and clean. Definitely visit again next time we are nearby.

The Best Fish and Chips we have eaten for a long time. Absolutely perfect! The fish was very generous and beautifully cooked. The batter tasted amazing and fish was lovely. The chips were the best chip shop chips and were what I would call a proper chip. The owner was extremely friendly and so helpful and the other staff members were also really attentive. They all made us feel very welcome. The manager told us that there was a seating area upstairs and with two little ones this made our dinner even more enjoyable. We sat at the window and had a lovely view of York. I wish we lived closer as we would be regulars. I would just like to say thank you to the staff, especially the owner. We will be back next time we visit York. Thank you for an excellent dinner which was great value for money and hospitality was wonderful. I’ve already recommended to all family and friends. We will be back.

Good that they do gluten free but the onions rings come as a box of mostly batter with little onion, there were a few onion rings of skin which was tough. Also messed up our order which is a shame.

Took my Kiwi mate here for his very first chip butty! Washed down with Dandelion & Burdock. What a great chippy, and they also have a full vegan menu! Something for everyone!

Very good haddock fish and chips at this nice place located in the center of York. Deicious, fresh and affordable. Recommended if you are in the neighborhood.

We came today as come to York for a few days holiday! And honestly the best chip shop we have been to in a long time thank u so much such great lads!

I thought the staff were friendly and the place was clean and the staff were very friendly. We set upstairs and the heat from the fryers rose up. The fish was very greasy. But can’t complain for £20 for a family of 3

Food is great and quick delivery. The only problem with our recent order was we asked for a gluten free sausage and chips along with the family bundle. The gluten free sausage didn’t arrive or wasn’t marked gluten free as we also had normal sausages with this order. Tried ringing the restaurant (10 times) but every time it just goes straight to voicemail without ringing I have left a message with the order number from Deliveroo.

Not worth the prices they charge .the portion sizes don’t justify the prices kids meal was so greasy we had to remove the batter .2 £750 light meals were light of chips and fish but had loads of soggy batter ,wish we hadn’t bothered.

We arrived near closing however they cooked us a fresh batch of chips. And threw in a free Diet Coke as we had waited . The portion size was more than generous and cooked to perfection. Would defo recommend. Staff were so polite and helpful.

Ordered some gluten free fish and chips from here on a recent visit to York. I was delighted to find a takeaway which catered for people who don't/can't eat gluten, especially a chippy!! It's was delicious, lovely crispy batter and the chips were so good too. The staff were really friendly.

I asked for gluten free fish and chips as I entered. No issues at all they even told me the vinegar was gluten free. I have to say, the batter was the most delicious batter I've ever eaten. It was light and crispy and so tasty. They have a vegetarian menu too. Would recommend 100%.

Really nice place. Food is absolutely delicious, all tasted freshly cooked and wasn't greasy or anything. Service is fast (obviously varies depending on whether you have something cooked to order or not) - we did have to wait for one of the vegan options but didn't mind so much. On that topic, it does have a separate vegan menu if you are so inclined. Pretty sure it's cooked separately too, I didn't ask but we had a vegan with us who I assume did. Has seating, but very limited places to sit inside. Loses a star BC the bathroom was filthy when I went in, and absolutely reeked. Next time will just hold it in 😂

We normally love this place but our last trip left us feeling ill as the chips were incredibly greasy and didn't taste very nice? I've given it a 3* as it's only been recently the quality seems to be going down, I hope they improve!

Disappointed with the vegan fish and chips. It’s very low effort for an excessive price. The ‘fish’ is just two dull slabs of pea protein. They don’t batter them like the regular fish - it’s more like the coating on quorn nuggets, but not as crisp.

I had a vegan fish and chips. The vegan fish was nice, the tartare sauce was incredible. I could not rate the chips though, not for me. They were crispy and well cooked but did not taste nice. Perhaps I’m too used to the taste of my local chip shops in Birmingham! Staff were really nice.

I did an order on delieveroo, prices weren't too bad and the order was delivered within 30 minutes which was excellent (fish was still hot!). I also ordered some onion rings and a mars bar - however, I have never eaten a deep fried mars bar before!! So I thought I'd try one and they are very, very sickly sweet 😋

Vegan fish and chips were lovely! They even had batter bits, although cooked in the same oil some people would not have them, however, the vegan food is cooked separately for those that require it! The staff were ever so lovely.

Shocking chippy and overly priced, can't believe they can justify 2.95 for a tiny tray off chips, & 1.79 for small tub off gravy. Get a grip. When there is a cost of living crisis

Yay for gluten free fish and chips! It was a small fast food establishment and the staff were friendly. They charged extra for ketchup which was weird and they didn’t have lemon but all together was excited to get to eat fish and chips.

One to avoid if you actually need gluten free food! I was super excited to find a chippy that did gluten free, but when the food turned up nothing was labelled - so there was no way to tell what was part of my meal and was gluten free and what was other people’s! No one answered the phone when we rang to try and clarify the situation - so sadly not appropriate if you need to be confident you’re getting gluten free food.

Should be clearly stated that this is a cash only business! Won't be using them again

We came for lunch, we're vegan and the chips gravy and potato scallops were delicious, staff were knowledgeable and friendly, would definitely recommend.

Great chippy! We spent 4 days in York and twice ate here the food was lovely. Great fish and chips and curry sauce and chips we found the quality consistently good.

Food was great 👍🏾 and hot unlike some fast food places in the area, only one thing we did not like was the cleaning up after customers after they left, tables and the floor could do with a clean, apart from that the foods good.

Mr Chippy ... I have to be honest, not a good experience. I'm the guy who brought the bottle of Fanta back (after my son had taken a drink) because it had "bits" floating in it. He had Chips & Beans, I had Chips and Curry Sauce. In fairness, the Curry Sauce was nice. The chips however were not. Really dry and loads of burnt ones that needed sieving out. £11.07 and after 3 mouthfuls it all ended up in the bin.

Forced into visiting York this Saturday but made worthwhile by discovering this gem. Great quality and rapid service at a pleasing price. Highly recommended.

Visited here with my friend on Monday. The staff were very helpful regarding us needing to have gluten free fish and chips and us asking questions. We were also pleased to find their vinegar and mushy peas are also gluten free. It would be a great addition if they could offer gluten free curry sauce. The fish and chips were very generous portions and piping hot. Plus they only took 5 minutes to cook. The only down side is that you have to carry your food upstairs if you want to sit in, but we were fine with this. Also for fish and chips twice, 2 mushy peas, 2 drinks it was £27 which is pretty steep, but I suppose you pay a bit more in York. Look forward to visiting here again. Highly recommend.

Fish was nice and a decent size. Chips were only so-so, but again a good portion size - in fact I couldn’t eat them all at one sitting. Friendly and efficient service. I’ll go again when my regular chippy is closed.

Friendly staff, food was just ok. No music in the upstairs seating area so it's sort of uncomfortably quiet even when other tables are taken

My 3rd visit, won't go again, food wasn't as good, place didn't look, clean, grubby toilet,floor covering a top of stairs torn, stuck down with duct tape, accident waiting to happen, the lad who served us was beyond pleasant, but his clothing didn't look too clean, as a person who has worked in catering, trained 100s of people in health & hygiene, & health and safety at work, the whole place was off putting.

What can I say except EXCELLENT. The young manager produced amazing fish and chips. Highly recommended. Thank you
