Mr Brown's in Carlisle

Nice little cafe. Dropped in on a cold grey day. Nice pleasant staff and warm atmosphere. Had a coffee and hot chocolate followed by a ploughman’s, reasonable sized portion and priced right. The food and drink were ok.

I was in for an hour, waiting for a bus. The loud music , put on for the staff rather than the customers I would say, nearly made me leave early. Everything else was very good.

Pretty average very small portions and very expensive and all out of the deep fat fryer yuk . Coffee was nice . Staff unattentive don't seem interested . Scone frozen not freshly made daily

After a day's sight-seeing, this absolutely hit the spot. Lovely, bright café with comfy seating. Food was delicious. Cooked fresh to order. Highlights were the scampi and rarebit (with added haggis!) We were all too full for cake but they looked very tempting indeed!

Mr Browns is our go - to place for Lunch in the Brampton Area. On this occasion it was a bit of an unplanned visit - we'd planned to visit Mr Bs later in the week. We had intended to walk from Brampton to Lanecost English Heritage Place and then back to Brampton. But the EH site wasn't open, so we walked from Lanecost to Brampton and back (Walking in Eden Book) We turned up at Mr Bs slightly soggy and slightly muddy (its Cumbria in February) with two hungry under 6s. Staff found up a place to sit and the food was served promptly with the usual efficiency. We found that there was quite a few things unavailable. But we was arriving at the end of lunch service. On the upside staff were more than happy to knock a few bits together for the kids 'off the menu' - glass of milk, scrambled eggs and toast etc - all accomplished without "computer says no" attitudes. Food was delicious and the staff attentive without being over imposing. We find the menu is spot of for the setting and season - not sure if it changes - were usually around the area in winter. Only down side was that it felt a little more impersonal than the last time we visited, someone mentioned an ownership change?

We had lunch here as Mr Brown's it came out top for reviews. My wife had a jacket potato with crab & Prawns which she said was nice and fluffy. I had the ploughman's lunch which was on of the best I have had, pork pie, egg, 2 x cheeses, 2 x chutney, ham, silver skin pickled onions, grapes, celery and a warm crusty baguette. No apple, but that would have been too much as it was enough for lunch.

Disgusted at the ploughman’s lunch, asked if the pickle could be replaced with a relish ‘no’ do you have piccalilli ‘no’ no salad, coleslaw , very poor for the price Not very clean

Lovely welcoming cafe, 10 of us on a cycling ride who were all seated together upstairs, food and drinks were on the table within 10mins of ordering. Service from the girls was very good and with a smile which isn't often the case. Scones and cakes were delicious. Will be back soon.

Poor assistance, sat waiting for waitress service no one came , my partner eventually went to the counter they said you order here 🤷‍♀️. Nothing to say so, three waitresses wandering on the premises, One particular waitress was more interested in her boy man, We felt her behaviour was very inappropriate it’s to be kissing and hugging in front of customers Go Get A Room !!! Coffee and cakes have to say was delicious. But will not be going back.

The food was lovely and plenty of filling in the Panini’s. Minor criticism was the waiting time exceeding twenty minutes outwith the busiest period.

Nice ice cream, just a shame you only get half scoops. I think the freezer was too cold making it difficult to get the ice cream out of the tub.

Stop off here for bite to eat on the way home.My dad had his usual soup. My husband and I had a club sandwich with chips and coleslaw. It's the best club sandwich I've ever had and very filling. The young ladies in the coffee shop were very friendly and helpful and are working the whole of the vank holiday, well done ladies .This is worth a visit if looking for a snack when in Brampton

We stopped overnight in Brampton while doing the Hadrian’s Wall walk. This café was a lovely surprise in the morning time. Very friendly staff and delicious food. Portion sizes were really good as well.

Have had problems on last two visits. Hard scones which waitress admitted were bought in frozen. Teacakes served were cold. Music far too loud. Expensive as well. Can get fresh baked scones and a drink for nearly half the price in other local establishments.

Mr Brown's looks like the kind of place you can just pop in for a quick coffee and a piece of cake perhaps? Think again. I've been a couple of times in recent years and whilst the cakes are good and the coffee is nice, the service is what always lets it down. I called in with my fiancee in August, and whilst they had a few customers it was by no means busy and there were 3 staff working. I said when we entered that we didn't want meals, just cake and wine, but it took a full 40 minutes for them to come and take out order. This was despite me approaching the counter twice in that time to ask if I could place the order, each time told that someone would come and take the order. Nearly walked out a couple of times. People that came into the cafe after us had their orders taken and food brought before anyone had come to take our order. That's never gonna wind anyone up is it!The owner did apologise for the delay, which was appreciated, but I think it was bad form from the staff to leave customers waiting so long, especially when we said when we entered that all we wanted was cake and wine! they could have just served us with it there and then and that would have been us taken care of.

I had lunch here with a friend, very busy, but the service was quick and friendly. When the second pot of tea we ordered was delayed, it arrived with apologies and then they knocked the price of it off the bill. The food was good, fresh and plentiful. I will eat there again and recommend it to friends.

Every time I visit this cafe I have to wait for ages to be served. Last time I walked away without ordering as I’d waited 20 minutes just to order. This time I’ve sat outside waiting for someone to take my order for another 20 minutes. I give up! Rubbish service.

Fantastic place to eat. Fresh ingredients all made to order. The girls serving were lovely and very welcoming. I ordered a prawn salad and got some extra smoke salmon on top - mmmmm!!! it was so delicious. Eco and recyclable friendly cutlery, plates and cups. Lovely coffee and if you want you can sit outside.

We popped in for a light brunch and we very disappointed. Took an hour between ordering and food being delivered. When the breakfast arrived there were items missing (no toast or hash browns) and the vegetarian breakfast had bacon on it, so disappointed as it was supposed to be a treat.The staff were very apologetic and the veggie breakfast was given to is complimentary, buy as an experience we won't be trying to repeat. STRONGLY RECOMMEND VEGETARIANS AVOID

After 45 minute wait the wrong order arrived, bacon on a vege breakfast. Other order no toast or hash browns. Limited vege options overall. Sadly very disorganized. Drinks came 30 mins before the food but haven't ordered more as now annoyed at a further wait for the right food. After nearly an hour still no toast or the right food. Go elsewhere sad as was trying to support local business.

I decided to treat myself today and bought a Sunday lunch Lamb with all the trimmings it was beautiful. I couldnt eat it all so reheated the rest for tea tonight. I would recommend Mr Browns the staff are so friendly five stars from me

Appalling DISGRACEFUL service: 9:50amOrdered, then waited 45 MINUTES before a lady told us she’s only just switched on the cooker at 10:45!!!!11am: Waited another 25 mins for the sandwich: WHICH DIDNT EVEN CONTAIN WHAT WE ORDERED!!! We were served by a sweaty employee with no gloves or mask despite it being corona virus!!!. At 10am the lady said the scones are fresh out of oven... at 11am the scone was STONE COLD!. The tea was pre-made and was weak and very milky, no tea bag to do steep myself. During this time the owner ran her car for 20minutes right next to the cafe, 2m away, with the engine running with fumes in our faces. NO OFFER OF ANY DISCOUNT/REFUNDUpon discussion the employee blamed the owner who had at this point left the premises. I’m absolutely appalled: no reputable business would ever offer such a MISERABLE experience. They should be ashamed of themselves. Definitely will NOT be returning or advise that to anyone.

We stopped off at Mr Browns for breakfast on the last day of our short break away, and we're so glad that we did! We had 1 breakfast, 2 large breakfasts, 1 bap and a cheese scone and everything tasted delicious, I'd go as far to say my breakfast was the nicest I've ever had!! If we're ever in the area again, we will definitely go back.

Came here for Sunday lunch with the family, and the atmosphere was vibrant and full of happy noises and people having a nice time (which is always a good sign)the food itself was delicious and plentiful lovely roast beef and yorkies and loads of veggies!! the staff where very attentive especially the young girl that looked after our table! the lattes were extremely good. we will defiantly be back!!

Waited 25 minutes for soup and then soup and main course arrived together!! So main course getting cold while eating soup.Tne Waitress was lovely but service terrible and so slow. I heard someone say she had been waiting 20 mins just to get a takeaway drink. Not sure what has happened as used to be a lovely place but I think they have tried to cram too many tables and chairs in now. Menu is not very appetising for the pensioners lunch. Liver!!

We have visited Mr Browns many times but unfortunately our lunch visit on the 25th September with our grandson was poor. Our 16 month old grandson and I had the soup which appeared to have been watered down more than once. Our coffee was luke warm and the staff kindly reheated it for us. It was clearly evident that there was a shortage of staff. On leaving I did note that the choice of cakes had drastically reduced since our last visit. We do hope that this was a 'one off'.

Our cold, wet and hungry group from Sunderland Clarion Cycling Club arrived in Brampton in need of a rest, a hot drink and a meal en-route to Whitehaven on our Annual Coast to Coast trip..We spotted Mr Browns from the roadside and it looked very inviting..We left our bikes outside, lying against the window of the cafe as there were no bikestands available.It was busy in Mr Browns but as luck would have it we were able to find a table straight away as the previous occupants were just leaving.. The friendly staff quickly cleaned the table and told us about the specials that were on the menu that day..We ordered our meals and although we had to change our choices as they had run out of jacket potatoes our alternative meals came out quick enough and were all good sized and very tasty. Everyone in our group enjoyed their lunch.. And those scones !! They even allowed us to use the side lobby inside the cafe to carry a puncture repair as it was raining outside.. Thank you everyone - We’ll be back next year :-)

Dropped in here one Friday afternoon for a quick coffee and cake. Lovely friendly, helpful and pleasant staff. We were served promptly and the coffee was delicious. I had the best caramel shortbread I think I've ever had - a great big slice with just the right proportion of biscuit, caramel and chocolate. The flapjack was excellent too. Will definitely be returning should we be in Brampton again.

Went for an evening meal. I am a vegetarian who doesn’t like cheese (except halumi it doesn’t taste like cheese) . The manager who is also the chef came to see me, we discussed what I like and she made me a a delicious meal, one of the best I have ever had when eating out. The staff are friendly and helpful. We visited on Friday 19th July 2019. Staff were very helpful and polite. We ordered the meat platter and eggs Benedict with bacon and two orange juices. Food was very nice and good value. Meals served to other customers also looked very nice. Cant fault the experience at all.

This place is very accommodating. We visit weekly and the food is well presented, tasty and always very fresh. The staff are lovely, they go out of their way to help and it’s inexpensive.

After my third visit I can confirm that the food (breakfast, lunch and tea) is homely, the environment and ambience ideal as a haven for writers and thinkers. The customer service is excellent. Shall be there as often as I can. The seating and tables are unique/original and not a simple modern (every table and chair one style, one design). I recommend the place.

We popped into Brampton on Wednesday afternoon in need of cake after a long walk up Cold Fell. We came across this lovely relaxing café and welcomed by friendly staff. Ordered peppermint tea and a brownie, it was delicious, hubby said the caramel shortbread was the best he's ever had. Recommend if you find yourself in the area.

Another cold day,so we were looking for somewhere war. Mr. Brown's was recommended. A good one- very tasty soup and sandwiches. Nothing to complain about at all.Would happily visit again

Really impressed by this cafe. We called for tea and cake after a walk, and we were not disappointed. The cake was excellent, and I am pleased to report that this place provides hot water as well as a pot of tea. It was not expensive, either. I would definitely recommend this cafe to anyone. Service was great, too!

We came for a celebration meal for my son with 21 of us present! Could not rate the food more highly - we all had roast dinner and the food portions just kept coming, it was delicious. The service was fantastic too - so friendly and welcoming. Can’t wait to visit again soon.

Call in for a morning coffee and scone. It was very busy and I'm not surprised as it was a great place. Coffee was lovely as were the home made scones . The staff were very friendly despite being run off their feet . We'll definitely call in again when we're in the area.

New to Brampton so wanted to fuel up before we headed off to explore Carlisle. Popped in here for a coffee and a cooked breakfast ... so glad we did! The decor is quirky and alluring: Victorian portraits hung amongst the shabby chic furnishings cornering the market these days. I am a sucker for a table absent of a single matching chair, and this place seems to have gone out its way to mismatch everything. The coffee was strong and served in beautiful earthenware ceramics and the breakfast .... perfectly cooked, perfectly plated and perfectly priced. All served with a genuine smile from a team that seems happy to give your day the right start. Really recommend!

Stopped off here for a quick lunch with our 4-year-old daughter while down visiting from Glasgow. The staff were clearly very busy but extremely friendly and apologetic for what was only a slight delay really. The food was fresh and the scones we took away to eat later were very tasty. We'd go back.

4 of us ordered the Sunday Roast - 2 chicken, 1 beef, 1 pork - all very good. Wine was delish. Waitresses all very friendly. Tiny criticism - veg little bit cold.

We spent a weeks walking holiday in Cumbria and having passed through Brampton on the day before we decided to explore the town the following day. We arrived for lunch a little later than planned at around 1330hrs. We quickly decided on Mr Brown's. Once inside we were warmly greeted by the staff who invited us to choose a seat. A high chair was quickly provided without asking and our orders taken. Questions about the foot were quickly answered by staff without missing a beat and they clearly knew their food. Adjustments were taken without fuss. The food (Club Sandwich and Burger) both with Chips arrived in a timely fashion along with the child meal we ordered (adjusted to suit the our lad's age almost without asking).There was no fussing and stress from the staff regarding the attendant mess of a 14month old vs food.

A nice cafe. We were told to go upstairs and they would take our order. We aimed at least 15 -20 mins then my husband went down.to order. We then waited another 15 or more minuets for our food. It was around 2pm so after the lunchtime rush. We had a cream tea each and that was nice.. Not a place to go if you only get an hour for lunch

What a lovely place to go. I visited family and we met up here for a quick bite to eat and it was the most delightful place to meet my family. The food was lovely and fresh and the staff were polite.

We both had baby breakfast which was enough comes with toast and coffee extra but freshly made, hot and tasty. Staff polite and helpful.

Mr Brown's has developed in an interesting way in recent years. From a pleasant place for locals to meet for a mid-morning coffee and a chat, it had extended its range and opening hours to offer full lunches and also evening meals. It has managed this while retaining a friendly, attentive and personal manner of service and also its pleasant local café atmosphere.

Stopped here on the way back from Northumberland. Just wanted a snack and a coffee. It was busy admittedly.Found a table whilst my friend ordered coffee. Rude waitress said when I asked for a menu 'can't sit there as a party has reserved the table." I asked if we could go to upstairs seating. 'No closed." My friend said we'll stand then!. No attempt to help. Ended up on very uncomfortable tall stools at a counter. Never got a menu. Coffee good but they definitely lost a sale through the unhelpful attitude. Felt very much in the way and will not be returning.By the way whilst we were there nobody turned up for the reserved table. A very unsuccessful lunch stop-no food!!!!When we tried to pay same waitress carried on cleaning shelves and ignored us until a nicer person behind the counter took pity on us. Maybe our faces didn't fit. AVOID!!

A lovely set up and beautiful food. The almond cake a pure taste sensation and service brilliant with teapots constantly filled up - plenty of food - my only criticism would be the ‘nutty bread’ but it didnt spoil the great variety of fayre provided - lovely staff too and easy parking

We had been recommended this café because it is dog friendly. We first went for Sunday lunch and it was so good that we went back the next day for coffee and cakes. The food was excellent and the staff were all very friendly.

Popped in here on the way into Scotland. Initial disappointment as they ran out of baked potato, but they found one and so arrange the toasted ham and cheese to go from toast to BP, and we were happy.

Dropped in for lunch and found seats upstairs in this busy cafe. We found a very relaxed atmosphere and a welcoming waitress. The food was fresh, hot and nicely presented. There was nothing not to like in a dog friendly establishment that might be a drawback for some. The cost was very reasonable and we will certainly return if in the area again

We called at this fantastic dog friendly cafe on a Sunday morning with our young dog who is still giddy. We were welcomed with open arms for coffee and fruit toast. The staff were great and really friendly, even the dog got a sausage! There’s loads of room too as there is upstairs seating. The cakes and tray bakes looked great as well. Couldn’t fault it at all. Visited Mr Brown's today and had a warm friendly welcome. Ordered the soup and 1/2 a sandwich combo with trepidation as I am not a lover of tomato soup. Until NOW! I left with the recipe. It was made fresh, with fresh ingredients and was served with a delicious sandwich. Delicious, warm friendly staff with good solid fresh food.

Found this delightful Dog Friendly cafe in Brampton. Staff, smartly dressed, friendly and nothing was to much bother for them.
