Mowgli Street Food in Chelmsford

Nice looking place but we were ushered out literally 5 mins after being offered dessert so had to down drinks and rush off. When we mentioned it staff got angry. An hour and half slot is not enough for a meal out. Very mercenary approach to service. It’s a restaurant not a military canteen.

Dining in central Chelmsford can be a bit hit and miss so my first visit to Mowgli was a very pleasant surprise. Staff who actually look after you without hassling you, a very wide menu and excellent food. We had the tiffin and it is rather charming to receive food in this way. A very nice evening and thoroughly recommended.

This was our third visit in as many months and 3/3 in our opinion. Manager(s) great - always a friendly welcome and the staff have, without fail, been equally friendly, prompt and spot on. Food is fab Indian street and, with Chelmsford lacking a decent curry house, it provides a welcome alternative/option.

I had booked a table for after the cinema so we arrived about 19.45. It was busy and we saw people turned away. We were seated promptly with a little wait for drinks but that was ok - time to soak up lovely atmosphere. We wanted 2 ciders but were told they had sold out🙁but… let me offer you 2 Cobras on the house - wow thanks! We were then asked if we’d like to move away from the window as a nicer table had become available - we were fine though so stayed put. We had treacle chips, sticky chicken, Bunny chicken ( served in a bread loaf) , goan prawns and paneer with black cardoman rice. Washed down with 2 more Cobra. It was delicious - tasty, spicy, plentiful and filling. Service was exceptional and I’m going back this week to try the slow cooked lamb!!! Well Done to the whole team

Came here for a birthday meal and catch up with friends, the restaurant is gorgeous and immediately the staff were really friendly. We opted to go with the set menu which involved ‘pot luck’ curries for mains so everyone had different This was a really unique way to get to try lots of items and honestly all of them were amazing, tried things I wouldn’t normally have ordered and was throughly enjoyed by all! The service was perfect throughout, speedy and friendly. One of our group announced her pregnancy and the waitress stopped to congratulate her when seeing the scan photo and asked if she wanted to swap the her prosecco to a soft drink (Our set menu came with Prosecco and she had gone along with it to not raise suspicions before her announcement) She understood the situation perfectly so thanks to her especially for that! Visited early one evening with my husband, beautiful decor & nice atmosphere. Staff exceptionally polite & helpful. We sat by the window, this would have been fine but the temperate had dropped outside & it felt cold sitting by the glass, I’m sure if we asked they would have moved us. We had the chat bombs which were lovely, just remember to try & eat them whole! We also shared a meat tiffin & some other dishes & bread. The tiffin wasn’t anything special & I agree with other posts that the depth of flavour wasn’t really there with the curries but the other dishes including the sticky chicken were spot on! Food came out quickly, drinks were good and I thought it was a reasonable price. Would definitely return & try it again as there was lots of choice on the menu.

Sad to say that it did not meet my expectations.The decor was beautiful and the staff members were friendly and offered good service,but the food was a total let down!The only good things were the chat bombs and icecream. The curries tasted like the curry wasn’t cooked down so it had a raw curry taste.Pretty grim to experience several bitter tasting dishes and soggy potatoes.We got the tiffin boxes for 4 people and only the chat bombs were good.Would I go there again? No.

The staff and the the venue is amazing food is no where near as good as your local indian carry house. The value was way over priced. The only blessing was how good and nice the staff was. Way over priced in my opinion. What shame. Drinks full of ice with no fluid. Recommendation ask for no ice.

To celebrate my birthday, we decided to try Mowgli. What a great choice that was. From the very welcoming and friendly staff to the fabulous choice of dishes - all of which were appetising and tasty, but also looked brilliant. And at sensible prices. Can thoroughly recommend.

Went for lunch and we thought it was lovely, very tasty food and excellent service, the staff was all very helpful and friendly.

I sent a constructive feedback email to the owner following our visit to one of her restaurants hoping for improvement and the response was the same as always for every poor review: “The recipes we use are from our founder’s family, however we understand these are not always everyone's personal preference.” I do sometimes follow Nisha’s recipes on “This Morning” and they are very good however that does not reflect in the restaurant. The waitress advised us to order the recommended three items per person, we felt it was odd although with hindsight, I now realised that the portion sizes are extremely small. I begrudged having to pay the discretionary £1.00 charity donation, the only restaurant in the whole of the hospitality industry that has this policy. I donate to loads of charities and prefer to choose who I donate to. These are only some of the numerous reviews and I totally agree with, following our own experience: • Slow service • It is utter disgrace. Really pathetic and tasteless food. Don’t know how on earth they think it is Indian street food. It is utter rubbish • portions were mean - three small pieces of chicken in each dish at £8.95 & £9.95 respectively were far from value for money. The food itself is extremely poor. • Not authentic. Probably the worst Indian style food I've had. Shockingly bland, no flavour, probably mass produced • Okay for those who shouldn't eat a lot. • Disappointing and will not recommend • They look like world war army ration eating vessels and believe me when I tell you; they match the amount of food served in them. This restaurant certainly does ration its food served. I left hungry. Hardly worth the money. I ordered a main course and two sides and was still hungry when I left. The food itself is extremely poor. I have read a number of management responses to similar poor reviews where they state that their food is based on authentic family recipes and that some elements may not be to peoples individual tastes. Poor food is not to anyone’s taste and less so if served in meagre amounts. If that is the case then this family should warn people that their rice is served microwaved and not fully cooked. That their lamb dishes are watery with no depth of flavor. Then people could make a discerning decision before spending their money on this bland and tasteless food.

First visit to this restaurant. When we arrived we waited for about 5 minutes to be seated the restaurant was practically empty, it took this long for the staff chatting behind the bar area to notice they had customers. The restaurant itself looks really quite nice but the service really let it down. I asked for more water, 10 minutes later it still hadn’t arrived….they had forgot. The service charge is added to the bill but I really would have left nothing. I will not be returning very disappointed.

Finaly visited mowgli chelmsford.. Absolutely blown away..great atmosphere (lunchtime sat) Really nice staff..great decour. And the food..just wow.. So fresh snd tastey..2 of us had 6 dishes.. All were amazing.. i cant remember going somewhere and being so blown away.pretty good value as well.. 6 dishes 2 drinks £60.

From the initial hello at the door from the very friendly waitress, the service we received throughout our visit was exceptional from all the staff we encountered. The atmosphere in the restaurant was relaxed friendly and unhurried. The waitress helped us choose dishes and couldn’t do enough to make our visit a great evening. The manager sent over some yoghurt chat bombs to try which was a nice gesture. The food came promptly and everything was delicious. We will definitely return to Mowgli Chelmsford soon.

A brilliant place to eat and wonderful atmosphere. The food is light and delicious and really exciting. Special mention for the chicken and purpleslaw. Great place to eat before a film and can’t wait to return. Staff were really good and helpful.

Awful flavours about from the Puri bomb starter Who cooked these dishes…? Out of a premade packet? Cook by numbers? No depth of flavour. Cardamom and too much sweetness to the paneer, chickpeas steeped in tea bland, and under seasoned meat. This is NOT what good indian food tastes like. Alot of the responses from the Mowgli team say its based on the founders recipes and flavours. The founder is Bangladeshi Indian so its more of this twist with some Hindu staples but nothing as lovely as the punjabi restaurants can put out. I think quality control is an issue. Save your money - in Chelmsford at least and seek out Dishooms or other decent restaurants elsewhere Dogs was in the restaurant ( not guide dog) barking away. Horrible icky experience. Food a joke.

Recommendation, if you’re thinking of eating in Chelmsford. The new Indian street food restaurant Mowgli Street Food is amazing. Tried it last night for the first time. The decor and atmosphere is really different, with unusual menu but the tastes of the food is unreal. I had the Mowgli Chip Butty and Monkey Wrap, the spices in each was superb. Service was also great with really friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit, we’ll be returning soon

A great meal full of interesting and tasty items. Lovely staff who were busy but cheerful in their work. Gives the impression of a real team effort. A lovely atmosphere to enjoy delicious food at a very reasonable price. Would certainly rate when next in Chelmsford.

Gorgeous inside, fabulous interior design. Love the swing seats but didn’t try them. I had the monkey wrap which was excellent, lots of different flavours and the tamarind fries which were different to anything I’ve had before. My partner had the butter chicken which was also very tasty. Just a meal with a fusion of wonderful tastes. Service was fine as well.

What a great experience we had last night at Mowgli in Chelmsford. Food was delicious and the service was great. High five to Kieran who looked after us. His food recommendations were spot on, he kept the drinks flowing and was very funny. The restaurant was busy with a great atmosphere. We will be back

What a lovely new restaurant to come to Chelmsford, not only does it look absolutely stunning the food is SO good. Service is fantastic and cocktails/drinks are on point a must visit. Have just booked again for my husbands birthday.

I really enjoyed the Monkey Wrap, the house Chicken Curry was only lukewarm, too sweet & not very spicy, also the portion was very small, but what was really terrible, was the really bad stomach I had after my visit!!

First visit and was very impressed. Delicious food, great presentation and very good and friendly service. Had the House Lamb Curry it was amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant have booked to go again soon.

Limited selection of over priced beer and not impressed by the food selection either. Seated by the door on uncomfortable benches so that was special. Food was quite nice, but minimal which helped with the rock hard seating. Friendly enough staff at least. I don't expect to be going back.

We visited Mowgli tonight after wanting to try this restaurant for a while. First off, the decor is so beautiful and the lights make it feel welcoming. The food was amazing, initially the portions looked very small but they was actually just right. Food full of flavour, we really enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be back🍴

First time visit to Mowgli and we were impressed. We were a group of three and tried a selection from the menu as starters. Particularly liked the Bhel Puri, could eat bowls of this. Also loved the Gunpowder Chicken. For main Course, I had the Goan Fish Curry, very tasty. Overall all of the food was great and not expensive. We were well looked after by Kieran, very attentive. Will definitely return.

Situated in the centre of Chelmsford. Easy to reach. Such a great concept, street food, asian dishes, served in a fun buzzy atmosphere. The acoustics make it a bit noisy, but nothing could interfere with our delicious food. 5 of us enjoyed a whole variety of foods, sharing and dipping into the tiffin dishes that the food is served in. dishes just appear as they are ready...its a great twist on an Indian restaurant. the decor is modern, twinkly lights, great decor and some swing seats ! The staff were so helpful, explaining the menu, and serving promptly and very cheerfully. The manager came to check if all was well...cant wait to go again.

Our second visit in a month. I was aware of the street food concept and unusual dishes and being an avid fan of Indian food wanted to try Mowgli out. We weren’t disappointed ! The first visit we selected four dishes, and we a bit full. Second visit we chose three other dishes and along with a dessert and a drink was just right. The servings are generous, really flavourful with a variety of textures, and every dish was really tasty. Overall, excitingly different menu and good value. We will certainly be back to try even more items from the menu. Venue has great lighting and ambience, suitable for couples, families or groups.

We visited for my husbands birthday dinner. The food was delicious and in my option the best food I’ve tried in Chelmsford yet. The service was also really friendly. My only disappointment (and reason for not rating 5 stars) is that I had asked on my booking notes to please put a candle in my husbands desert as it was his birthday but this was missed, and no one acknowledged it was his birthday, which was a shame. Otherwise a great experience.

Lovely restaurant and atmosphere especially the swings. We went here for a special birthday meal. The food was amazing, the taste and flavours of the Lamb Curry and Office Workers Tiffin. We will definitely be back. Thank you to Brook our waitress who was very efficient and made our experience great.

I would not recommend this place It looked very nice from the outside with the lights and swings. However the service was poor; we waited a long time to be served, the cups were terribly stained and cutlery was not cleaned properly. Had to ask for a new tea cups 2 times. The 3rd cup was still very stained. I couldn’t believe it. This really put us off the food. We wanted to finish our drinks, pay and just leave. We managed to stay for the food since we were told it was on its way. I ordered the chicken roti. Highly disappointing and certainly not authentic. It seemed more like a wrap from the supermarket and the chicken wasn’t flavoursome. Just salty. To make the matter worse the chicken wasn’t well cooked. I could not eat the food. I told the waitress about the chicken and her response was so ridiculous! Telling me it’s the chicken leg so it would look pink inside. Anyway, not a good experience. Will never go there again.

This is the only terrible review I have ever left and I am so disappointed as I had really been looking forward to trying this. However, the food here was undercooked and the chicken was raw. The staff were apologetic and tried to offer us free desserts and really tried to make us feel better but cutting into your chicken to find it raw after already eating some is beyond disgusting. The food we did try was not that nice possibly as a result of being undercooked. The place is nicely laid out with friendly waiters but nothing can make up for chefs who forget to cook the chicken. Grim. They still had us pay 50% off the bill despite barely touching it and the waiter & chef both agreeing the chicken was not cooked.
