Extremely expensive for backstreet Indian restaurant. I booked to go with some friends and was quite embarrassed that I picked this place as it was so expensive and prices charged you'd expect 'fine dining' not average Indian food.

We had a very bad experience at Moti Mahal, the very opposite from the experience we had in 2012. The food had deteriorated and was bland at best. They seem to have lessened their ambitions in the kitchen. I had lamb´s brain as a starter with was ok, but the main vegetarian dishes were a tasteless disaster. Vegetarian indian dishes are many times the pride of the kitchen and well executed, this was a sloppy stew, presented poorly. But the worst experience happened to my son who was (he is ten) forced by the staff one floor down to go to the ladies bathroom, though he insisted to be a boy. He came running back in tears, feeling extremely humiliated and mistreated by the staff. We left the restaurant in anger in a very upset state. This dinner, since it is rather expensive, was meant to be one of the pearls of our London vacation, it turned out to be quite the opposite. We don´t recommend this restaurant to anyone, you can do much better anywhere else. The performance of the staff was appalling and inexcusable.

Walking along Great Queen Street last night (29 Feb '16) I noticed with dread 'closed for business' signs in all windows. Their website today says they are permanently closed and thanks all customers over the last 10 years. I am really upset. It became a top 5 restaurant for me here in London and I had such fun times with Toni (one of the managers). Really will miss this place. Thanks Moti Mahal for the last 10 years.

Moti Mahal is a very good Indian restaurant in London's West End Theater District. The menu offers cuisine from several different regions of India, and all of it is excellent. We maybe don't eat in enough really good restaurants but the service here is some of the best we've had anywhere. Booked online prior to our trip so a bit of a shot in the dark but delighted with our experience. Food was excellent and focuses on flavour rather than quantity. More expensive than your average curry but then this is no curry house. If you're in Covent Garden treat yourself.

Firstly, this was very convenient for the New London Theatre on Drury Lane, and we were able to book a pre-theatre table for a Saturday at fairly short notice, unlike many other restaurants in the area. We had the pre-theatre menu, which gives you a choice of 4 starters (one of which is vegetarian), 4 main courses (one chicken, one lamb, one prawn, one vegetarian) with rice, vegetables and naan and an ice cream on a stick for dessert. This is a lot easier than the full a la carte menu! The starters were excellent, but we felt the chicken main was a bit on the hot side for our liking. The food was all high quality though, so can't really be faulted. At £23 the pre-theatre menu seems reasonable value, but then add in a cocktail each (about £11 and though nice, they're quite small), an extra bowl of rice as one bowl between two hungry people isn't enough (£5) and bottle of water (£5) a small pot of tea each (£8) and then a service charge of 12.5% on top of everything and your £23 per person meal has turned into £50 each. The a la carte menu will set you back a lot more (£20+ just for a main dish) but there's a lot more choice. Or you could have the taster menu (£60 for the meat option, £45 for vegetarian option) where (from looking at the menu, we didn't try it!) you get a good selection of things. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the environment was good. Overall we would recommend the restaurant - if you're having a night out in theatreland, nothing else is going to be cheap anyway!

The restaurant is very elegant and smart in appearance, the staff were without exception friendly and helpful, and the food was presented beautifully and tasted amazing. It really felt like special occasion dining, and the a la carte menu would have to be reserved for that as it was expensive (upwards of £20ish for a main, though to be fair they did look amazing), but the pre-theatre set menu was brilliant - starter, main plus vegetable side, rice and naan, and a little kulfi for dessert was plenty of food, served elegantly and everything was delicious. My only tiny grumble was the smoke alarm being set off accidentally while we were there, it went on for about 6-7mins and was shrill as anything, so it did disturb things a bit, but that aside I have only positive things to say and will definitely visit again.

I can see how if you chose options from the main menu it may be overpriced (Up to £26 for a curry), but at £23 the food was really high quality. It is definitely the best tasting Indian food I have ever had, and doesn't leave you feeling uncomfortable afterwards like many! We were on a schedule, so arrived promtly when the restaurant opened at noon, and we were the only patrons in the restaurant. Somewhat unnerving. We went for a reunion meal which we were hoping would be good food, a few drinks and time to catch up with a years gossip. On reflection this was perhaps not the right venue for our evening. The menu had some interesting dishes included which were tasty and beautifully presented but were very small portions. prior to visiting the restaurant I had looked at the website it had suggested there was a set price menu which we weren't offered. We had cocktails to start which were good value and looked very pretty. However, the wine list was expensive (a bottle of prosseco was £42) I know I'm from the North but that is a big mark up. It was quite formal which alongside the price of the alcohol did not lend itself to a very relaxed evening. Later on there was a corporate event which we effectively ended up in the middle of (they were having a quiz!!), which again didn't encourage us to linger. It also divided the attention of the staff and we struggled to get our bill and coats, given there was a service charge they maybe didn't need to try so hard to get a tip. Overall over priced and under delivered.

We chose this place for New Year's eve because it offered slightly different food to other Indian restaurants and we wanted a slightly less formal affair, considering we were going pre-theatre and only had 2 hours to eat. They did deliver on that front. We had finished eating after nearly an hour. The price tag of £79 for 5 courses was quite steep given that the portions were quite small (in fact some mains had smaller sizes than starters) and there was no effort to make the experience different. Considering this was New Year's eve and the price, there could have been some kind of amuse-bouche, even if it had been some free popodoms. The food itself was different to the usual Indian, and we were looking forward to some of the slightly different dishes. In the end, some were nice, others ok. But no wow factor. STARTERS- Pheasant kebabs were some kind of indistinguishable patty of mush. Couldn’t taste the pheasant at all. In fact it reminded me of those stodgy Linda Mc Cartney things you find at Sainsburys.- Baked samosas of duck were nice enough, though the pastry was undercooked which rather spoiled it.- Indian Papdi and lentil dumplings were exquisite. Probably the best dish of the whole evening.MAINS- Braised lamb shank was nice and lean, but not particularly interesting- Beef stir fried with shallots was so hot it was hard to eat. No warning on the menu. I know it said “dried chillies” on it, but there are degrees of heat and this one was hard to eat. However, it was very tasty.- Stuffed morels were bland and frankly piss-taking. Just 2 morels on the plate! It was not even starter size. With a 5-course menu at £79, you would expect each main course to be worth approx. £20 and therefore contain £7 of ingredients. 2 morels for £7 is daylight robbery. Plus it had no particular taste.- Spinach dumpling with figs was surprising but actually quite a nice experiment.DESSERTA nice dessert of the standard of a 1-star Michelin establishment.BREADBread was actually terrible. The menu announced a selection of breads but we only had 2. So it’s barely a selection, is it! And they were: Naan and Chapatti. Not particularly inventive. Both were nice enough but frankly I can do the same at home. The chapatti was also quite greasy. Not particularly pleasant.SERVICENice enough staff, but managed to get the drinks order wrong. I had asked for a honey and pear lassi and only got a normal lassi. I also repeated three times at time of order that I wanted their home brew and the guy never wrote a thing down. At the end he asked “Did you not want any drink then?” Joke.Anyway, overall it is a pleasant enough restaurant, which rightly tries to break away from the usual Indian dishes and actually comes up with interesting combinations. But the execution is not that great. Overall we left with a degree of disappointment and a terrible indigestion! I don’t think we will be back.

I had been taken here once before and eaten very well, so when I found a 'pre 6.30pm' three course menu for £23 in the week before Xmas, it seemed like a bargain. Four of us ate and very much enjoyed the set menu and there was even enough lamb curry left over for a friend to take home in a doggy bag for her son. A large office party had been sensitively placed downstairs leaving the mix of small groups and couples in a calm and very pleasant environment. The wine list is relatively expensive and there is an excellent selection of gin and gin based cocktails. Service was a bit mixed. I was given a seat in the bar whilst awaiting my dining companions and then no one came to take my drinks order and we had to ask three times for more water - unfortunately sharing a habit that many restaurants have, of bringing chargeable items with alacrity but forgetting simple things such as more water or the bill. A small irritation but not enough to mar a very enjoyable dinner.

These dishes came with what I would call a cauliflower curry, dhal and naan. I drank salty nimbu pani whilst H had presecco with fresh pear juice. Had we stuck to the basic Tiffin menu the price would have been £16 a head but with the drinks and masala chai it was quite a bit more. Still, I don't mind paying for high quality food in fine surroundings and Moti Mahal has both of these in spades. The napery, cutlery and glassware were all excellent and the presentation of the food was of the very highest standards. In 1969 I ate at the Moti Mahal in Delhi which is where I was first introduced to tandoori chicken and naan. I believe the namesake London restauarant is an off-shoot but I may be wrong about this.We both thoroughly enjoyed our tiffin and next time we will try the dinner menu.PS. The staff were superb!

London is home to a number of outstanding Indian dining restaurants, and the food and drink experience here was among the best we've experienced in that class. The tasting menu brought a range of food with a mix of spices, flavors and textures. Though the service was a little confused to start as they seem to have a "team" approach to table service, our main server was an engaging and informative bundle of energy. The wine list was excellent and the menu even better ! Opting for the lamb chops to start with I can only describe them as heavenly ! Mains arrived and what a treat ! Our experience was five star all the way and we will defiantly go back.

Any restaurant that teaches a person of Indian origin on what they should order just so that the restaurant may make the most money shouldn't be classified as a good restaurant. The waiters were terrible. The food was okay but the portions were tiny but the prices were typically Central London. There are better restaurants, so unless you are rather desperate for "Indian" food or what is named so, please avoid

It was mine and my partners first experience at moti mahal and we loved it, we pre booked our table and was a little late but the staff were fine with that. We only waited 10 minutes for our food. The food was amazing. It was pricey but worth it. Would definitely go back.

My husband and I had the tasting menu but I needed it gluten free. They were very accommodating but when dessert was served they made a mistake and gave me something with gluten in it. Thank goodness I recognized it and had them replace it. But sorbet is a poor excuse for a substitute in a very expensive tasting menu. The food itself was very good and a higher quality than most Indian food restaurants. The total meal including three glasses of wine was about $250, so bring your wallet.

We were a family of four with a twelve year old on crutches. The staff were perfect - informative on menu and the excellent wine list, understanding but not patronising with the children. The food was outstanding. Choices were excellent, the Indian wine I chose delicious. A really enjoyable start to our evening.

Took my son there and being Indian, I've had a curry or two! This was superb, lamb chops were to die for. My son still raves about it and as a surprise will be taking the whole family tonight, can't wait! Best curry in a restaurant that I've had.

We had an exceptionally good curry here. My scallop starter was cooked to perfection, the scallop resembling butter; it was so tender. My lamb curry main course was spicy with a rich, deep flavour. Naan bread was lovely, with a light crisp to the base.Staff were extremely helpful and attentive. However, the tables are close together and the hard surfaces make the ambient noise uncomfortably noisy.

Not enough vegetable dishes , but curries OK. My wife had a cocktail which was poor and really did not warrant the title of "cocktail". The menu is OK but I do think it could be slightly expanded to include better vegetable dishes to compliment the curries.

Its a really good place, they represent the true Indian Cuisine and the quality of the food. Some of the things are even tailored to sell it to the high end customers. For example, they had Truffle Naan in the Menu- which isn't Indian at all, but still that was of so much focus the whole evening. The food is pretty good, the portions are very small and its overall very expensive. We paid 170 quid for 3 people without drinks.

We indulge ourselves with a gastronomic treat during our trips to London. We picked Moti Mahal based on our food preferences, on line reviews and location. The friendly atmosphere was immediately apparent as was the professionalism of the staff. The menu was refined and diverse. Portion sizes were surprisingly large. The only negative would be the disproportionately overpriced wine list - hence the 3* rating for value.

Me and my girlfriend had an absolutely fantastic trip to Moti Mahal during a recent trip to London. We were greeted by a plesant young girl who seated us, before a guy came over with the menus and told us a bit about the history of the Restaurant and Indian food - an excellent, rare touch! We had a three course meal here, with a couple of drinks each and it came to around £120 total (to give you an idea of price), but it was one of the best Indian meals we've had. I'd highly recommend the Butter Chicken and the Triple Chicken - the later was recommended by the guy serving us and he didn't disappoint! Oh, he even commented on the origins of Butter Chicken too - magic.Lovely atmosphere, attentive staff with a genuine interest in how your evening is going and fantastic food.It was also refreshing to see that everyone got an extremely high level of service (after looking around). It's also one of the few restaurants we ate at during out trip where no sooner was your drink empty when someone was over offering you another (little things like that matter a lot to me as sad as that sounds!)Overall, I'd recommend it whole-heartedly for a romantic meal (or outing with a group of friends - remembering the group of older guys enjoying cocktails on the sofa behind us!). Oh, another lovely touch was the glass partician allowing guests to see in to the spotlessly clean kitchen! Thanks for a lovely meal Moti Mahal - fantastic!

The food was very good. Excellent starters, including soft shell crab, scallops, and other items. Great sauces and flavourings. Very tasty overall. Very good deserts too. Service was a bit spotty as it was a very busy evening. Expensive, but we had a lot of food and booze. £135 per person including booze before, during, and after dinner.

We had pre theatre dinner on Saturday 31st October, booked this as part of the AmEx Bookable promotion and was very pleased with the recommendation. Excellent food bests naan I have ever had, lamb curry as excellent, the prawn dish could have done with a couple of extra prawns, but apart from the the food was excellent. Service was very good and as we were in a hurry very fast, staff very friendly and helpful. The ambiance was very goo too, unfortunately I arrived late due to travel delays however we made the theatre on time thanks to all the staff. We will be going back for a proper evening meal no rush to enjoy this place proper.

A very nice Indian Restaurant (definitely not a curry house) but at a very high price. A meal for six with one modest bottle of wine and a round of cocktails came to £720. The food was definitely very nice and presented well. Beware of the early sales pitches around taster menu and options - We really got the impression that the waiter was only interested in pushing the higher priced options and wines etc and on reflection we were short changed on some of the dishes too (portions are small!). Once we looked like we weren't going to be ordering much more then service 'fell off a cliff' - We could see our waiter milling around the restaurant and nipping outside for a smoke etc but he completely lost interest in serving us and left us feeling rather disappointed overall.

I have never been to a restarant with quicker service than Moti Mahal. The apitizers were served even before we got our cocktails... One of the waitresses asked if we were in a rush. Quite funny, since we never asked for express service. However, most importantly, the food was really good.

In addition the staff is kind welcoming and know everything about the food, restaurant and tradition!

This was fantastic and expensive. You get what you pay for. Started with a trendy refreshing Monkey 47, with lemon (unusually) and 'designer' tonic. We overdid the food big time and ate every last morsel. For starters we had meaty soft-shell crabs, large prawns and lamb chops! Main course included tender lamb, more prawns (full of flavour but very white and delicate in appearance), pilau rice, black lentils and garlic naan ordered with extra extra garlic. Every component was delicious.Wine choice was a 2006 Gruaud Larose. Excellent. This was a really enjoyable experience, but there were a few 'awkward' moments that the team needs to work on. On arrival we were met at the door and it felt like we were being checked-out before being allowed to approach the desk. Also, many 'service questions' occurred twice, e.g. can we take your coats? Would you like an aperitif? Are you ready to order? Would you like to see the desert menu? We were invited to taste the wine which I did, then two glasses were poured, and then we were asked if we wanted it decanted! Yes, I'm being picky, but London's number one Indian restaurant can be even better.

My concierge recommended that I visit here as it was convenient to a play I was going to see off of Drury Lane. I was seated at a less than comfortable table to the side, but I had no reservation and the restaurant was pretty full, but the service was excellent. As for the food the lamb chop appetizer was the best lamb I have ever had anywhere in the world. If Iwas going back I would just get that for the appetizer and main course. I had traditional Tikka Masalla for the main course, which was very good, but not at the same level as the lamb. The wine list was nice and when I told them about some time constraints they made sure I was out in time. So, for very good service and exxceptional food I will let slide the uncomfortable seating (which I think was really more a drink area anyway).

First attended Moti mahal a couple of years ago and had a great meal. Always wanted to return but didn't want to be disappointed.Glad to say we weren't . The meal was superb.Had sagar rattan -seared scallop on crushed cumin peas - definitely recommend this oneAnd real kulambu - Tamil prawns - also really goodFor mains I wanted the lemon sole but they'd just run out.(teach us for eating later) instead I was recommended the prawn curry with some saffron baked rice My wife had rogan josh - Kashmir . To add to that we ordered the " cheddar and honey " naan. Both mains were really tasty but the naan was out of this world believe or not.Overall the service was very friendly but not in your face. So made for a very comfortable atmosphere.Drinks aren't cheap but I went to eat not drink loads. That's what pubs are for.Moti mahal is not a curry house but a restaurant that also does some curries. It's not huge portions but they are big enough for you not to go home hungry.I would highly recommend "Moti mahal" if you like high quality Indian food.

We ( 4 adults) found to Moti Mahal just by googling Covent Garden places for after musical dinner. Very good food, service nice, athmosphere quite good. This Place tries to be a fine dining restaurant but to certain extent they have challenges to prove that positioning. The food, eventhough ok, was not that great even very good.

The Rajasthan, just outside Monument tube station, is in a time warp as this traditional City curry house, which unsurprisingly curries favour with Cityfolk, who tend to become increasingly raucous through the meal. Don't be fooled, this restaurant has little to do with Rajasthan, or even India. It may pretend to be Indian food but it's entirely run by Bangladeshis, so their influence in the cooking is unmistakable. For example, the curries tend to be significantly sweeter and contain more gravy and oil than traditional Indian cooking. It should also be remembered that Rajasthan may be known for its colours - but it's certainly not known for its food. But without wanting to nitpick too much, if you're with a bunch of friends, you *may* well have a good time. The staff here certainly excel at plonking down the Cobras, making sure that any diner's glass that is less than 80% full - gets topped up with alacrity. Between the six of us we tried the chicken do piaza, saag gosht, both passable - but not really traditionally Indian. I'd have to say the naans were excellent. As were the Cobras.
