Mother India's Cafe in Glasgow City

Moderate menu. Nicely Situated on Main road. Parking car be elusive. Atmosphere decor becoming alittle too familiar in many of these new comfort food with an evolving menu indian cafe/restaurants. Surprised it didn't offer a Breakfast Nann wrap.

Empecé a ir a la Madre India originalmente, cuando abrió, a finales de los 80. Cuando vivía en Glasgow. La comida es, y siempre ha sido, excepcionalmente buena. El miércoles 5 de marzo, a eso de las 14: 30, llegué. Elegí esta hora deliberadamente, ya que era la hora más tranquila del día cuando el restaurante estaba casi vacío. Me gusta relajarme y tomarme mi tiempo. Toma un par de copas y tómate mi tiempo comiendo y bebiendo. Escrito en una hoja de papel, le mostré al gerente lo que tenía la intención de comprar y la comida y bebida se habría acercado a las 100 libras. Estaba disfrutando de una tarde relajante. Disfruté un par de pintas, comí una Dosa y pedí una botella de 30 libras de Prosecco. Un vaso dentro, el gerente intentó arengarme a comer. "Se iba a poner ocupado" dijo. Sin embargo, el restaurante todavía estaba tranquilo. La mesa de al lado está vacía. Le dije que estaba gastando mucho para asegurarles sus ingresos. "Llevas aquí dos horas" dijo (sonriendo y riendo condescendientemente). Esto simplemente no era cierto. Decepcionado, y con mi día estropeado, pedí cerrar mi cuenta. Ya había gastado 50 libras en dos pintas, una Dosa y una botella de Prosecco. Todo, ahora, por nada. ¡Esto realmente me molestó! Siento que su modelo de negocio es simplemente sentarte, alimentarte y sacarte de la puerta, lo más rápido posible. A pesar de que el restaurante no está lleno, o casi vacío. Curiosamente, tuve una experiencia similar en la sucursal de Edimburgo (una franquicia). ¡No estoy seguro de lo que haré ahora! Estoy de vuelta en Glasgow a finales de esta semana, pero no estoy seguro de que pueda regresar. Arriesgarme a otro mal día puede no ser una opción sensata para mí. Especialmente con el muy excelente, y de larga data, Ashoka West End justo al final de la carretera.

Delicious! A family favorite of many years now, we all love something from this wee café. Their Aloo Gobi is amazing, and it's my go-to treat if I choose the takeaway. 😋 Staff are super friendly, and very efficient as the order takes hardly any time at all but they are always so busy! The place feels cosy, the atmosphere is cheery, and the smell of spice makes you feel starving as soon as you walk through the door. 🤩

Fabulosa comida, nunca decepciona. Cola no mucho tiempo y entró bastante rápido. Una vez en la cola parecía alargarse! ¡Siente que tuvimos suerte y lo hicimos bien! La comida era deliciosa y el personal cálido y acogedor! Cordero de ajo con setas estaba delicioso! Cordero Karahi soberbio también y como siempre pakora fabuloso! Volveré pronto.

Absolute space cadets… when you charge someone 12.50 for a lamb Karahi make sure you send them lamb not some random chicken dish. Ejector seat for yous and your Terrible patter!

Tapas style dishes Always taste great

Absolutamente delicioso. Los precios se reflejaron en el tamaño de la porción. Pescado monje/tamarindo, excepcional. Dosa keema, muy sabroso. Jueves biryani especial con la raita fabulosa. Arroz limón - wow. Nan hermosa. Me encantó.

Delicious fragrant curries Came here with a couple of friends, it was a little spendy, but the depth of flavour in the curry we had was top tier. I ordered a chicken madras, asked for proper spicy, but got white boy spicy nonetheless... ah well. it was really tasty though 8/10 Naans were great, fresh and tasty, paired perfectly with the curries.

Mocht je in de buurt zijn 😉 dan zeker doen. Om 17.30u hadden we het laatste tafeltje. Reserveren is niet mogelijk. Kleinere gerechten, schappelijke prijzen, lekker eten met een beetje pit.

Guys, please. LOOK INTO YOUR BUTTER CHICKEN because it is not butter chicken. Restaurant is located on a quiet street and entry way was nice and bright. We sat down starving ordered whatever we saw. Lamb chops- cold Butter chicken- small bowl, not butter chicken , cold. It tasted like I was eating spoonful of onions. It was missing the basic ingredients, cardamom, kasuri methi, butter..??? It is a bad dish. I liked the saag paneer but very bland. I guess it is ok for your majority customers. Naan is very good and rice portion is small. Staff are nice, working fast and loads of seating but food needs help.

IMO the best in Glasgow. The naan is spectacular. It's high quality and good value.

Have being going here for a very, very long time since a student and love it but recently I have become aware the pakora for instance (5pieces) costs over a pound per small pakora piece , rice has also been cut back. PLEASE PLEASE get back to what you used to give as you will end up loosing long time clients. We always dine in .

Small portions . Next portion on the table before you finished your starter . One set of cutlery to eat two courses , staff spray cleaning the table beside you while your trying to eat , severe lack of sauce to rice ratio . Had better meals from Iceland .

This restaurant was recommended by a colleague. The food was out of this world, the staff were attentive and very knowledgeable of the menu and give us undivided attention. The head chef visited our table towards the end of our main course to make sure everything was satisfactory. We assured him it was perfect. This place is worth a visit!

I've been coming here for years and it's standard has always been high. Food is tapas style which is great. 3 dishes per person is ideal. Always fresh and really tasty. Top quality food and love that there are always different specials available too.

Whether you do a takeaway (recommended) or try to find a space to sit-in, you won't be disappointed. We have the takeaway every other week, just fab, takes a few minutes in the microwave.

The Butter Chicken and Chick Pea Rice were very good. The servings were enough for me. I walked in after noon on a weekday. Good service. I would eat here again.

My wife and I came in last week and the food was excellent and the staff was very friendly.

Went for dosa today. The aloo saag dosa was off but when I told them I was given a new dosa. The portions were tiny and the dosa oily. On the whole service and atmosphere was good

One of my top 3 spots for a curry in Glasgow - so good. Being walk ins only, this is a great spot for an impromptu dinner. We only waited around 25 minutes for a table on a busy Saturday night after struggling to get a walk in anywhere else in Finnieston. The food here is tapas style which is nice and doesn’t leave you feeling as overly full as some more traditional curries might. Been a couple of times and the food is always fresh and flavourful. The peshwari naan bread is unbelievable.

I like to go here as often as possible, I love the food and the Staff are so accommodating. Lunch is very affordable too.

As always, food was excellent 👌 We shared fish pakora. One Curry each, shared mushrooms rice and 2 nan breads. And this was more than enough for 2 people, and I like my food 😋 Enjoy 😉

Love this place. It was tapas style food menu so I ordered 2 dishes. The fish pakora came with the most delicious light dipping sauce.. I loved it, best ive tried!!! ! The masala chai was yum too. Definitely coming back.

We had a late lunch there as a family. There was an afternoon special (4 small dishes and 2 side dishes, enough for 2 people) and children's dishes (the chicken nuggets were homemade). Everything was super tasty and freshly prepared. Always my pleasure

En absoluto lo que esperaba siguiendo varias recomendaciones. El servicio estaba bien, pero starter y main llegaron al mismo tiempo (es así como hacen las cosas aquí? ). La dosis de pollo con chile estaba bien, pero nada especial. Para la principal tenía saag de cordero y chapatis. Uno de los chapatis estaba más cerca de un popadum, ya que estaba extremadamente seco y crujiente. No me lo comí. Sin embargo, los cuatro trozos de cordero en el plato principal estaban tiernos y bien condimentados y las espinacas agregaron un buen sabor.

Lo que realmente distingue a la comida aquí es que cada plato tiene un sabor muy auténtico y la sensación abundante de una comida casera. La comida te llena el estómago y el alma 🤤

We selected chicken dishes costing £7.95 each accompanied by one portion of boiled rice and one naan bread. We didn't expect full sized portions but nor did we expect only three small pieces of chicken each, a tiny portion of rice and a mini nan bread which was so thin that it was hard and flaked when lifted. The serving dishes that held the chicken in an insipid sauce were cold as were our plates meaning that our meal was lukewarm when we started and cold by the time we finished. Add two soft drinks and two coffees to the meal for a total cost of £38.00. We won’t be back.

Consistently good food with smaller portions at the main Mother India allowing a mixture of dishes. The daily specials are amazing, and the fresh spices come through to deliver an amazing taste and gentle heat that builds slowly, allowing flavours to develop. Highly recommended and worth every penny.

Food was missing and they weren’t helpful

This is now been my best meal ever!! ... the lightest vegetable pakora was delicious..then then roadside lamb... oh my word it was so tender full of aromatic spices with a a topping of very fine fries.. and to top off a single nougat... the coconut ice-cream was fabuolus... best meal I've had in a long time and really reasonably priced. I will certainly go back for more.

Went for lunch today not impressed service was quick my husband ordered lamb karahi and the order came it was chicken which the waitress changed.I had the butter chicken was the hottest butter chicken I've ever tasted the peshwair nan was poor some coconut spread very dry and some almonds over the top.We go to Goa every year and love the food disappointed today although the waitress was lovely

I would not recommend this cafe. Food was tasteless, not fresh and very pricey.

Had a great experience eating at Mother India's Cafe. Indian dishes but small portions like tapas, tasty food and friendly staff. Nicely decorated restaurant. We had 4 dishes plus bread for two people and it was a perfect quantity. I would recommend the ginger chicken spinach leaf, spiced haddock, and daal makhni. Gulab Jamun (dessert) was delicious as well but the portion was a bit too much for me. Would definitely come back if I ever find myself in Glasgow again.

Favourite Mother India venue. Tapas style, sharing plates with plenty of variety and curries are good - think London chain Dishoom but better. Staff are great craic and will have reccomendations if you're stuck. Worth waiting in a queue for.

We had a lovely meal here. We walked in and went upstairs to a very magical and lovely environment. There were candles lit for a romantic ambiance. We had a reservation so the table was ready. We shared four mains, but it ended up being a lot of food. It was absolutely worth it and the left overs were still good the next day. The service was amazing and all of the staff was really nice.

I recently had a disappointing and insulting experience . My family and I visited with the intention of enjoying some snacks, not a full dinner. From the outset, the waitress should have asked about our plans, but instead, she was unwelcoming and rude. Despite placing a small order, we were told we were taking up too much space and were pressured to order more. This culminated in the waitress asking us to leave, which was incredibly insulting and left us feeling unwelcome. This experience has left a bad taste in our mouths, and we won't be returning. It's unfortunate that the staff's attitude overshadowed what could have been an enjoyable visit.

Can't call yourself Mother India's and have no Indian food. It is the most gimmicky place we have ever been to. Do not recommend for anyone looking for flavorful food

Short review coming up.. The best Indian restaurant in Glasgow no contest absolutely love it. Edit Have been here loads over the years and for me still the best Indian restaurant in Glasgow it never fails. If there's lamb chops on the menu when you go get them, though you can't go wrong with anything. Last visit I've just had lamb chops, crab dosa, saag paneer and daal makhni with the best garlic naan in the city to mop it all up

Food is ok, but the service was unnecessarily brusque. The waiter couldn’t have been less enthusiastic.

I'm extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. The food quality was mediocre, and the portion sizes were so small that they could be mistaken for samples—except, unfortunately, they weren't. This is what they consider a full dish! Mother India’s? I can't imagine how they came up with that name. As for the ambiance, it was below average, adding to the overall letdown. I don't plan on coming back. I think, all the good reviews given here might be posted by a digital marketing guy or who has tasted Indian food for the first time. WASTE OF MONEY

i would say the only complaint would be a bit of small portions, so its better off if you order two servings of whatever desired food, but other than that, very good quality

We ordered some food and we had an incredibly disappointing experience. The garlic naan bread was stale and flavourless. It kinda tasted like a supermarket garlic bread. The Peshawari was better quality but so sweet that it couldn’t possibly be eaten with the curries. It was as sweet as a dessert. The aubergines curry had no description so hard to know what to expect and it was just weird. Way to much cumin. The butter chicken tasted artificial. The pakoras weren’t crispy at all, probably frozen. Everything was super greasy. It was so sad, we also spent quite a lot of money on it for simply being unable to eat it.

One of the worst experiences, they kept us waiting for 20 mins and when we placed the order, after 10mins the owner came and asked to place minimum order of 5 dishes, they said they have other customer who can order high billing value when we denied and asked us to leave the restaurant. Have not seen such greedy people and staff who will not only push to order more but will ask you to leave if you order less. We ordered 3-4 portions and could have ordered more after tasting the food but still they have no courtesy and simply let their customers leave. Also we were with an infant and they do that have courtesy at all. In fact how can they ask us to leave pathetic, I mean what kind of restaurant was that. Totally greedy and pathetic people I have met in UK nor in India!

Don’t come here expecting mother’s Indian food. It does not even have a resemblance to true Indian food or flavors. Also if you happen to have an allergy to anything they may ignore it completely.

Unfortunately I wasn't impressed! Mother India was top of my list to try because I'd heard so many good things about it but the food is disappointing. I had the pakora to start which was superb and it's generally a good sign when the pakora are ok from an Indian restaurant, but the chicken tikka just wasn't good - the sauce was watery, the chicken pieces tasted strange and the pilau wasn't good either, it tasted like paprika rice without any spices. Probably better to call it paprika pilau rather than pilau rice on the menu. Everything arrived hot and the courier was great, but the food was disappointing. If you want proper authentic Indian food, this restaurant isn't it.

had a fantastic late lunch here the other day. The plain naan bread was perfection and the spicy ginger lamb was just the right kind of spicy on a rainy day.

Just got a carry out tonight but food was fabulous! The pakora as usual brilliant and the lamb curry tender and very tasty . Always hits the spot !!

Nice place this, really nice decor inside and the staff were very nice and attentive. Two of us got the lamb with leeks and we really enjoyed it. The rotis were very nice and fresh and hot and really tasty. We'd definitely come back to try some of the chicken dishes.

Absolutely beautiful authentic dishes. Great attentive Service and Flavours of the dishes are well balanced and thought through. Catering to everyone…. This family run business in the heart of Glasgow is a must visit.

100% the best curry house in Glasgow. Tapas style so no giant portions but oh, oh so good. Try butter chicken, garlic and chilli dosa and the fish pakora. You can't reserve a table and there's often a queue into the street, says it all! Worth the wait though😁

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this place and finally managed to pop in for late lunch. Food was excellent and good value for money we had a set menu which was £20pp and it was plenty of food for sure. One of the best Indian food I’ve had in Glasgow

Service none existent, curry mediocre. Chapati old, hard and cold, garlic naan not fresh and cold, garlic butter spread over naan was solid. Curry was very similar tasting when you got one that wasn't burned! 4 sfaff members stood chatting , no one asked if meal was ok or we needed another drink, surrounded with empty dishes. When I finally collered the chap in charge he was very apologetic and took the Substandard items off the bill and drinks which was kind of him... Still added a service charge of nearly £10! Will never go here again or recommend . Place was charming and had a lovely view, was clean but a little tired. Desperately needs staff training!!

Staff was lovely and friendly, but atmosphere, interior and food were maybe not as good as had been hyped up. We were in for dinner Sunday 5pm, we waited approximately 30 minutes for our food and then 1 dish was forgotten and we had to request it, so came 20 mins after rest of the food. We had chicken biriyani, it was slightly over spiced and we are used to spicy food. The mushroom rice and breads were fine but nothing really special. The vegetable curry was also nice. The lamb chops were incredibly small and were steamed with average flavour. Again service was fine and staff very kind. On the fence, probably wouldn't recommend as a first or even second choice but maybe drop in for a beer is good.

Exceptional! Food was amazing , everything was explained perfectly to Us by a lovely member of staff as I am not an expert in Indian cuisine. I can honestly say that it was the best dish I had in months and for sure the best I had in Glasgow in years. Highly recommend place , You will not regret:)

Oh dear Mother India, what a disappointment! Table booked for Saturday 2nd March for party of 4. Multiple failings…No acknowledgement from staff on arrival. Waitress had limited knowledge of the menu, not helpful at all. Food was removed from the table whilst I was still eating! We asked for the remaining food to be bagged to take away with us, however only some was given back to us. But the biggest issue was the waiter giving a ten minute ‘WARNING’ to leave the premises. A warning!!! Staff were very rude! Not one smile between 4 or 5 members of staff. Very unhappy with the service! Food was okay but I would have liked to have a second go at my butter chicken the next day but it wasn’t in our ‘doggy bag’. Shame!

Food was tasty, good quality but quantity was less for that price. I would like to for taste once a while for sure. Definitely recommend it for Indian food restaurant in Glasgow west end.

We have been coming for years and Mother India’s cafe always produces! The butter chicken is my favourite, but literally everything in the menu is fantastic,. The service and food are both 5*, don’t be put off by queues as they soon move!

Going here for lunch with the family was a last minute decision. We googled Indian Restaurants and Mother India's Cafe popped up and we decided to try it out. We got there around 1 pm. The place was fairly busy but we managed to get a table in a couple of minutes. Staff showed us to the table with proper courtesy. Menu isn't extensive and seems to be aimed at the target audience of local (UK) and international tourists.However we were able to find something interesting for us. They also have an amazing kids menu which we used for the boys. Food: Arrived exactly at 10 min mark (my son was marking time). Ot was well presented and was of good quality. We requested mild food and it was exactly that - mild but tasty. Portion sizes aren't large and some might find them smaller, compared to other Indian restaurants. Service: Quick service. Although the waiter seemed to be in a grumpy mood. When we were almost finished with the meal, he abruptly questioned: "finished?", in a not very friendly tone. Perhaps he was having a bad day - not a biggie. Other staff members were pleasant and friendly. Overall, a descent restaurant at a great location. Good for families, groups and couples.

Very nice food, we had a selection between 4 of us and shared, food was very good, nicely presented, inside was nice enough..parking in the evening was ok, and managed to park around the corner. Service was good, attentive waiting staff.

The amount of food provided was insufficient; the £8 biryani resembled tomato rice in taste, prompting the suggestion that it should have been labeled as such to avoid misleading customers. Moreover, discussing the portion size, it amounted to merely half a bowl of rice.

I went with my friends there. The food, service and ambience is really impressive. We were very happy with food, Vegetable Thali and Saag were absolutely delicious.

I don't normally review restaurants but I am making a exception for this one. We where in Glasgow for our daughters graduation and after checking on line we found the mother India cafe. We got there quite late and the staff where very pleasant and accommodating. We had the chicken packoras to start and keema rice, butter chicken, chicken dansak (specially made for me as it was not on the menu, thanks chef). Now I know some people had said that the portion sizes are smaller but we were stuffed after the meal. The meal was good value for money, £55 for two and that included a £26 bottle of wine. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. I thought I would point out that the mother India cafe is the restaurant we went to not the mother India restaurant which is next door (very confusing) and apparently a completely different business. Thank you again for the wonderful meal and a big thanks to the beautiful Indian waitress that served us who was extremely helpful. Best wishes for the new year I'm sure you will be very busy. John k

Literally the best Indian cuisine we have eaten. Portions look smaller but are actually perfect size as they are very rich and full of well-balanced, vibrant flavour and colour. We went at mid-week lunchtime it was busy but we were quickly seated. Loved it so much we bought their book which in itself is very inspirational with wonderful recipes.

Hands down the best Samosa and Butter chicken and Naan I've ever tasted ever and I've eaten some Curry's from all over the world. Honestly I have to go back to NZ and will never eat this good there. Definitely will be back next time we're in Glasgow. Not to mention the fantastic customer service. Thank you x

The best curry I have ever had. Great food, service and atmosphere. 10/10. The ginger lamb was out of this world and the chili chicken sublime. Every thing was perfectly cooked and the man bread was to die for. Amazing experience!

I have marked 5 stars for service and atmosphere but I didn't actually dine in the restaurant we had a home delivery and I didn't want to negatively mark on these aspects. We usually order and collect from our local Indian but as it doesn't deliver and we were unable to collect we thought we'd give somewhere else a try. After hearing various people chat about mother India we decided we would get a home delivery from here. Despite being the other end of town it didn't take long to arrive and the food was still warm hence the two stars. The naan bread was the poorest I'd ever seen it was basically an enlarged chapati with some garlic slopped ontop. When we order a naan elsewhere it is large and doughy. We also ordered a chasni which, usually is bright red, I appreciate different places make it differently however this was a mild yellow colour and tasted the exact same as my boyfriends dish that he'd ordered. Could have sworn it was the same meal in 2 different boxes.

Food was fantastic; chicken tikka makhni and the lemon and cashew rice especially. Staff were very helpful: we had booked the wrong venue and they happily rearranged our booking and seated us right away. They also altered one of our dishes when it was a little spicy. The Gulab jamin and ice cream Desserts were amazing, really nice to get a range of flavours to choose from too. Weren’t waiting long for courses either. Will definitely return.

My husband loves Indian food, so we ate here our first night. For me, Indian food is just OK, but this place was so good that we made reservations for the Edinburgh location (which was good but not as good as the Glasgow one). The butter chicken is outstanding!! They also have the best naan I have ever had. Everything we ate was wonderful. It was a very small, tight restaurant that does not take reservations, so make sure you plan your time. A wait is definitely worth it though!

Mother India's Cafe right opposite to Kelvingrove was so tasteful. They make the Indian kitchen proud with its perfect small dishes. The atmosphere is also fantastic. A lovely place for lunch.

The food was really tasty and there were a good range of options. We liked the fact that there were different styles of Indian cooking on one menu, and a good variety of vegetarian options.
