This is Fawlty Towers style, 1970s decor, peculiar staff, the carpets and wall paper are terrible. The food was very good. The hotel appeared to open when it felt like it.

Beautiful setting of a hotel. Loved the inside of the place. The food was not a good value at all and was just average. 20 GBP for a single not that great fish and the chips were OK. Was the most overpriced place we ahve eaten at in 10 days in Scotland. Would not return.

A charming old hotel within walking distance of the centre of Tain. Plenty of parking, lovely meals, room full of character. One very minor grumble: background music in public areas seemed a bit unnecessary and could have been a bit quieter...

The staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and service orientated and we were well looked after. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the food was basic, well cooked and tasty. It appears that the hotel has enjoyed better times. A lovely building that has been extended unsympathetically, culminating in the terrace at the front, with unkempt grounds and parking don’t do the staff’s efforts justice.

We arrived for one night with 2 dogs on our way toOrkney. Felt that an additional £30 for the dogs was excessive, usually charged £20. The serving staff were wonderful, friendly, receptive but a bar meal was not what we expected. The total for a starter, pizza and 2 ice creams, a bottle plus two glasses of wine , (house wine) and a whisky was£109.99, with room cost of £140 an over expensive night in a second rate hotel.Breakfast was mediocre in the extreme.

Margarita Pizza was also delicious and stone baked. Aberdeen Angus burger was also good and home made. Roast beef however, was ordinary with roast potatoes., Yorkshire pudding and a few vegetables.Sticky toffee pudding was light and served with ice cream. Milk chocolate cheesecake was also great. Government eat out scheme made this £76 so a very good family meaL for 6 people.

this hotel was used by royals under ownership of Mr & Mrs Wynne, I would hesitate to expect them to return now! Although the food was excellent with a great choice on the menu, that is all I would recommend, the oldest member of staff did not greet, speak or say goodbye to us at anytime she made us feel most uncomfortable. The grounds were overrun and the entrance to the hotel was littered with cigarettes ends the flower pots full of weeds and dirty. The whole place had a feel of neglect and would suggest a deep clean to fresh interior

Enjoyed extremely good food and friendly service during our first two visits - one a Sunday lunch carvery, the other a dinner with friends. Can’t fault the quality of the menu or of the serving staff (although in the bar restaurant area my preference would be for the large and rather incongruous flat screen tv on the wall to be switched off during meal times). But we will be back again very soon with family staying for Xmas and hope that a table with a scenic window in the main restaurant will be far better than sitting under the bar tv!

5 of us really enjoyed our meal here and the Turkish chef - Orkun - is a real star -- his personal front-of-house attention both before and after our meal was great and hugely appreciated by us, and his food was brilliant. Service from the other staff was also very good. Two disappointments - one, that the Restaurant, was very quiet for a Thursday night, so lacked atmosphere; and secondly, we don't understand the very down-market signs in the grounds advertising their food offering -- totally out of keeping with the general style of this Hotel.

No kerb appeal. Grounds /gardens shamefully neglected. Front entrance poorly maintained with badly chipped door paintwork which was also filthy with dirty fingerprints. Reception area tired with absolutely filthy carpets. Whole place badly in need of maintenance & a decent clean. Staff a little disengaged (& what's with the bizarre aprons?) although most of the younger staff were pleasant. Food...like the decor, was tired - not totally unpleasant, but nothing special. However - the most memorable part of our visit has to be the overwhelming stench of sewage in the dining room.

Last time we visited Morangie House for lunch the Restaurant Manager seemed reluctant to accommodate us. Thinking it was a one off experience, I persuaded my husband to return today, again for lunch - bad mistake! We arrived at 1.30pm and were grudgingly given a table by the (I assume) restaurant manager. Although it is mainly a self service Sunday carvery we were told by her that we would have to wait 7 minutes. I asked if we could have a drink and was informed that I was already told we would have to wait! Chastened I sat down! I have to point out that it wasn’t all that busy. With some trepidation, after 7 minutes with not the slightest attention from staff, we helped ourselves to starters and after eating them, my husband finally gave up and went in search of a drink. The very nice lady at the bar brought us our drinks. Throughout our meal the restaurant manager passed by our table attending to other diners and enquiring if everything was alright and replenishing drinks, never once looking our way until admittedly she gave us spoons for our dessert. The chef serving the roasts was very pleasant and helpful it has to be said. However, we ate our very nice meal as quickly as we could and departed feeling very much like second class citizens.

I went for dinner in March 2018 with some friends, and the first impression was very disconcerting. As you enter the car park you are confronted with strings of blinking LED lights, suggesting a downmarket carvery rather than a restaurant. The reception area was pleasant though with attractive traditional touches, but on entering the restaurant we were shown to a table where I was again faced with strings of flashing blue LED lights festooned along a bar. This is a pretty unpleasant environment in which to dine, and the management clearly need to decide on their market position. The food itself was good and the wine list perfectly adequate as well as reasonably priced, but the service, although friendly, was a bit amateurish - for example I was not offered the opportunity to taste the wine but the bottle was just opened and put on the table, and after the meal it was very hard work to attract the attention of the waiter or waitress to get the bill.

Nice bar and as residents the night porter will serve you drinks after hours. Food was lovely and well presented. Staff very cheerful, friendly and helpful. Some areas were a little worn however this we felt added to the charm of the place with its historical photos and old Jacobite sword and various Scottish shields. Jackie had Fish Pie and I had Gammon with chips, mushrooms, tomatoes and salad. Both tasted good and the gammon is a good choice if you are hungry. Disappointing evening meal when passing through Tain and desperate for Dinner. The desperation was reason enough to finish the food without complaint but seriously overpriced for the quality. Haggis stuffed chicken breast came with mashed potatoes that had a 'crust' on it, so must have been sitting around for a while. Roasted vegetables a mix of mushy and uncooked onion. Staff friendly enough but somewhat confused and as somebody else pointed out dressed in a mix of casual clothing that makes it hard to identify them as staff to start with. We are usually relaxed and easygoing but this will be remembered as a pricey and somewhat strange eating experience.

Staff are dressed casually (they used to wear nice smart uniforms), the service is not what you expect from the price you pay, and the food was - OK. Standards have dropped. We were seated just inside the entrance to the conservatory, I was looking into the reception, I could see very messy wiring around the entrance doorway which really annoyed me as I could have done a better job myself - in fact my 11 yr old could have. For such a beautiful building there is a lack of attention to detail. After we had ordered our food we could hear other diners being shown the specials board and wine list - why were we not shown the specials board and wine list? Steak was not cooked as ordered. Very disappointed, wish we had just gone to the Tall Pines a few miles north, would have cost half of this.

They had more 'batter' on than cod from a fish and chip shop which was over done, this left the prawns dry and over cooked. The rest of the food was lovely and we all had 3 courses each. When it came to complaining we were told that because some of it had been eaten we would only get 10% off the prawns which were just shy of £15 each! Not happy with this we spoke to the owner Mr Shearer. To say he was condescending and trying to be manipulative is an understatement. It was eventually agreed that we wouldn't have to pay for the two prawn starters but it was through gritted teeth. Have family who live nearby and will not return.

We had quite good lunch in this restaurant. The milieu is beautiful and the service is very professional and friendly. Anyway, the lunch was quite basic but good. The pizza was the best one, but our baquettes with chips were too big portions. Afterwards I realised that I had ordered ham, pineapple, cheese baquette but there was tomato instead of pineapple.

Was here with a couple of friends for dinner as we thought the hotel looked amazing from outside. However, we were let down by the food and the service. The salmon salad was what I had. Local produce or not, the salad was stale, lacked appearance and the salmon was frugal and dry. Really disappointing considering the high prices charged. My two friends both had to settle for fish and chips as the menu is very pretentious. Suitable for middle class tourists but definitely not locals or families. The service from the younger staff was efficient but the older workers made no effort to appear happy or professional. There are better restaurants in the area that cost less and offer higher quality service.

Great to return to this restaurant after a number of years and even though ownership has changed in that time the quality of the food is still as good as the last time we dined there. The service is excellent and the quality of the food and range on the menu is excellent, thoroughly recommend this restaurant if in the area.

The staff on arrival were friendly however despite having 2 young.children with us we were not offered a children's menu. The 2 boys had the chicken burger each and my friend and I had the cheeseburger. The food was very nice but the portions for.the children were massive and at £13.95 each overpriced and was a waste of money and food as they couldn't eat a quarter of it. The hotel obviously is not interested in catering for families or should offer alternatives for smaller portions or a proper child's menu. I certainly won't be back nor would in recommend it to anyone

5 of us enjoyed Christmas lunch here today. We found the staff very welcoming and friendly as they took our coats, showed us to the table and explained the semi-buffet style set up.Drinks were quickly ordered and delivered (there was an error with the wine, in our favour though) and we were able to go to the serving area for starters. The cold fish platter was very popular and tasty, though the previous customers to us had left the salmon looking a little mashed... The serving staff were very friendly considering it was their Christmas Day shift, and we were encourage to help ourselves to what we wanted. The carvery area, though small, was quick to serve people and portions were generous. There was a nice selection of accompaniments to my roast beef and lamb, and plenty of gravy and bread sauce. I particularly enjoyed the veg which still had plenty of bite.Desserts were sensible sized, and delicious. Nobody in our party found fault with the food, and we received just the right amount of attention and chat from serving staff.Overall we were pleased with the welcome and food at the Morangie. The many free-range, squawking children roaming the hotel, while not the Morangie's fault, certainly gave the event that taste of home...

Stayed here for one night in a superior double room. Clean and comfortable if not a little out dated. Tea and coffee making facilities in room but seemed to be a stale smell of smoke lingering and the Bathroom was a little past its best for a superior room. However towels and linen were clean and fresh.Breakfast was a little sparce and had to wait a while for cooked breakfast but did cater for gluten free diet. A few of the other guests did spoil breakfast a little with poor manners and no staff on hand to deal with it at the time. Staff could have been more visible at breakfast and self serve choices needed topped up on our arrival but no one seemed do do this quickly. A touch expensive for the facilities and service.

Visited with a friend. We hadn't booked in advance as it was a Tuesday evening. We were asked when we arrived if we had booked. When I said no , it seemed to be a problem. However we were shown into the near deserted dining room. It didn't get any busier. The food was absolutely first class. We both had starters which were delicious. My friend had fish and he raved about it. My gammon steak was perfection. The staff were young , a bit reserved but very efficient. Wholly recommended.

We biked from Lairg and this was the frst place where we could get lunch. Yes, we could have chosen a place with self service, french fried smell in the corners and no white tablecloth and deccent nappies. We stopped here, as maybe a little off the mainstream guest; we were hungry, sweatty, hair in loops 'cause the crash helmets, cyckle shorts etc, but we got served. 25 inches baguettes have I hardly seen before. Good. Nice soup, Tea, cakes for desert: Good service, reasonable prices. You have to pay a little for the surrondings and tablecloths, though! Yes, again please.

Family meal and cannot complain about a thing. Food and atmosphere were good, staff attentive and adults and children were satisfied. Portions were large, so can't comment on the desserts, but if in Tain this should be on your list.

Came here for a family lunch as we had family up from Glasgow for the week. However, on arrival we received a very cold reception as we happened to arrive at the same time as a group of well-to-do men therefore we obviously weren't seen as priority customers. The menu was very limited for children as the majority of the food was quite pretentious and we also had to ask for a children's menu despite our group consisting of four very young kids. It was a relatively old woman who dealt with us. She certainly needs to improve on her people skills as her manner was rude and she was very abrupt with us. A younger waitress came along to us later who was much more friendlier. However, the overall atmosphere was too negative and the mentality of the staff was awful therefore we left after our drinks and went to the Sunflower Cafe. It's worrying how we got a better reception from the staff in a wee local cafe than we did at a prestigious establishment like the Morangie. Would never recommend anywhere that has staff who don't care about their customers.

This is a charming and traditional Highland hotel. Open fires, stags heads and good old fashioned service. This is exactly what I like, if you want chrome, glass and televisions showing sport - then this is not for you. Excellent food and lots of it. A traditional, but sophisticated menu using fresh ingredients and lovely friendly staff. Very relaxing indeed when you have a busy life.

In Tain with my husband as a base for visiting whisky distilleries & playing golf. Both in our forties, we enjoy travelling & expect great service, good food & drinkable wine! Outward appearance of the hotel may be a bit off putting & inside it's anything but modern - more quirky, shabby chic! So if your looking for an ultra modern deluxe hotel with top class facilities - this is not the place! For us, it was ideal. Throughout our stay the staff, mostly very young, we're efficient, friendly & helpful without being intrusive. After playing golf & visiting distilleries, it was a real pleasure to be greeted by a friendly face in the bar & relax with a drink in the lounge area. The room was spacious & clean & served our purposes. We had dinner twice in the very pleasant dining room & the food was well cooked & presented, well priced & very well portioned - too much for my husband & I but that is NOT a complaint!Minor things could have been better - the shower, lack of wine available but still on the wine list, (slightly annoying ordering 3 times before finally getting one they had!) & giving guests a breakfast menu but not actually providing most of the buffet - the latter points probably due to it being reasonably early in the season but easily avoided if removed from the menu until available. There is nothing particularly 'special' about this hotel but the staff made us feel welcome & valued & throughout our stay we felt relaxed & comfortable - we would definitely stay again & highly recommend it as a well priced base in Tain.

Was slightly worried when we entered the hotel as had a 70's look to it. Was really pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and attentive. We were given the choice of pre diner drinks in the bar before being taken through to our table. Mains of battered haddock and chicken stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon served with a whisky sauce were very good. The chips were excellent! Two courses with wine and pre drinks came to a good value £25 a head for four.

We were looking for somewhere for a quiet lunch and we found Morangie House just off the A9, handy and pleasantly quiet. Delicious home made mushroom soup and pate. Lovely smoked salmon. Scampi with fries the size of my thighs. All very good with friendly service to boot. We will be back to see if dinner lives up to the service we got for lunch.

Unlike the last review, we were not shown to our table and were left feeling a bit awkward in the bar area. The service seemed lacking -- the young waiting staff appeared hard-working and quite attentive to others but manager appeared ineffective, aimlessly wandering about talking to customers and ignoring our empty plates. The food was acceptable. Nice selection, well presented and quite tasty. I was left unimpressed, though, perhaps due to the service. For a Christmas lunch I expected to feel more full and content. I suppose we were just unlucky because others around us seemed happier.

We didn't enjoy our Sunday lunch this time I'm afraid. The service was slow (they were busy to be fair) and the ambiance resembled that of an old folks home. The carvery was medicore - soggy roasts, dry meat and flavourless Bisto gravy with Paxo stuffing. We suspect the trifle was a Birds packet trifle. Apologies if this is not the case, but it really did taste like it. I would prefer to pay more for better food but appreciate I may be in the minority and it could be time to try somewhere different. If you like lots of cheap food, this is the place for you. If, like me, you are happy to pay a bit more for quality, try somewhere else.

We went as a party of 13 for christmas dinner meal and service was not as expected our bill ran to over £800 and we will not be back 3 times we asked for a wine list or bottle of wine and we are still waiting yet the vegatables were very poor, brussels, cauliflower, we never got the sugar snap peas or gratin potatoes that some had they were either raw or severely undercooked definately not al dente, the roast potatoes were okay as was the turkey. The sweets were passable but to be honest I could have made better myself and did for our own boxing day meal. The cheese and biscuits were an extremely sad affair with a fwe bits of cheese but loads of celery matchsticks and very few grapes. So all in all with canapes which were stale at the start and coffee which to be honest was one of the best parts of the meal the Morangie and its staff ripped us off this year and we will not be back. The only reason I have give the atmospher a high score is because we made it for ourselves

Visiting family in nearby Dornoch, decided to go to The Morangie Hotel for our Sunday lunch. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is quite nice (in the conservatory to the front / side of the hotel), and the staff were brilliant. It was a carvery deal with great starters to choose from, and the main courses were excellent with four roasts!. As if that wasn't enough, the sweet / dessert selection was fantastic. All round, it was great, and we would certainly go back when next in the area. In terms of cost, it was about £15 per head for adults, and half price for the kids. Excellent.

We were looking forward to a lovely lunch on christmas day after good food here earlier in the year. The service was fast perhaps a little too fast at times as it seemed as the table was cleared the next course arrived. The food, well they were in such a hurry parts of the starters were forgotten but replaced when pointed out, for the main course we had 3 venison and 1 halibut, the halibut was very good but the venison was over cooked with a bitter sauce even so it was quite tender, the vegatables were very poor, brussels, cauliflower, sugar snap peas and even gratin potatoes were either raw or severely undercooked definately not al dente, the roast potatoes were excellent. The sweets were passable. The cheese and biscuits were an extremely sad affair with four thin strips of cheese and six small oatcakes between the four of us but loads of celery matchsticks and some grapes. So all in all with canapes at the start and coffee to end a luncheon unworthy of the Morangie or Christmas but one of the fastest meals ever served.

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.
