Rude young man behind bar more interested in chatting with his mates than serving (6pm Sunday) and then £1.50 for soda water…rip off! Cold and damp and no atmosphere! Won’t be back much much better pubs in town

The Monks Walk is a fantastically quirky and historic Grade II* listed pub in Beverley. The 18th Century façade belies the curiosities to be found within. Entering down a central alleyway which is dated 1671, the actual Monks Walk, the pub is split between the two buildings to either side. A multitude of rooms and floors spanning hundreds of years of history, some dating back as far as 1420! The Minster Bar is directly to the right with one brightly lit timber roofed room to the front and a more atmospheric cavern-like room to the back. They're split by the bar which also has a little serving hatch out onto the alley. There were five casks and five kegs beers on amongst the standard lagers, all of which were a good range of styles and at a very decent price. Plenty to keep us entertained for a whole evening and we wish we could have stayed longer. In our explorations of all the other rooms there were of course some characterful toilets to the left, a pool room and a pleasant loft space which was being used for live music. The pub is renowned for its regular entertainment including folk festivals and a wide range of other music and events, so there's always something going on. Wandering down to the end of the alley there's also a surprisingly large paved courtyard at the rear which must be a great spot in Summer. Out of all the pubs we visited in Beverley this was certainly my favourite and definitely an essential stop if you're in the area, we could easily while the whole night away at the Monks Walk.

This pub was a 2 minute walk from where we were staying in Beverley so already a plus! There is another entrance via the east gate road which takes you into the rear courtyard which is mostly cobbled which is great. A good place to have music etc and when we were there puppet shows were on for children (part of the Beverley puppet festival). This is an old pub which some very old bones, plenty of old beams and brickwork (see pic). There are a few parts to sit in to enjoy your ale, with 5 real ales on pumps and the usual other types of drinks. The staff appeared very young and we found the barman who served us to be very friendly and helpful. On the other side of the pub up some steps is a larger area to drink in, again lots of beams (as you come up and round on to a small landing there is a very old bit of corner woodwork exposed, see pic). This is a lovely pub which seems well liked and popular and which has retained its character. We all liked it and will come again on our next visit.

Went in the back door before it was open which we didn’t realise so we waited for the barman to set everything up and understood he wasn’t ready yet . A group of young lads knocked on the front door to be let in the barmen opened the door and started serving them didn’t even ask if we were ready to be served. We just left the pub thinking it was very rude and disappointing , bad customer service.

On a return visit after 4 years, we were a bit alarmed to find a wedding celebration in full swing in our lunch time break at Beverley Puppet Festival. Come in said the (I guess) landlord in his wedding finery. This amazing landlady and landlord kept a bar and beer garden open whilst their son and new daughter in law enjoyed a very lovely sounding feidnly wedding reception. Great choice of Yorkshire and international real ales and beers, and wines, and great service - you wouldn’t have known they were hosting quite a big wedding at the same time. Lovely historic setting in a great location. Highly recommended.

Being situated on a quieter street towards the Minster, the Monks Walk Inn can sometimes be less crowded than the ones in the Market Places. It also has a style and ambience that suggests that they are aiming for different clientele base. As such, it didn’t feel like a “local” pub, but it is a nice enough place nevertheless. It is certainly a very smart pub and with the white walls and old beams it is as traditional looking as you would hope to find in the area next to the Minster. It just doesn’t feel like a cosy old pub and I feel that the style is aimed more towards the restaurant style of the business.

We love Monks Walk! Great atmosphere, super selection of drinks including craft beers and generally good staff. However, tonight was a v poor customer service experience: the young lady called us ‘you lot’, didn’t know what beers were in, didn’t know about any gins or what tonics were available, poured a v gassy pint and let a fair amount of it spill on to her tray! Not what we’re used to at MW. Hopefully she’ll get more training and will come up to their usual standard!

Been many times before for drinks and very satisfied with the atmosphere and variety of beers, but this was the first time having something to eat. Not very welcoming (treat as outsiders even though b&b) and the time taken to get the food (only 2 soup and 2 specials) was unacceptably long (more than 40 minutes) and when it came it was obviously microwaved (even the rice). The soup was bland, but the specials were okay. Would return for the beers but forget this place if you are expecting food (unless just after a lite bite to have with beer)

We went to see a show at upstairs at The Monks Walk. We also had a drink at the bar beforehand. It's a great pub that is VERY atmospheric. Plenty of seats to sit down. We then went upstairs to watch the concert, into a very old room with no heating. The concert was great and the room was amazing but it was a bit cold. So if your off to see a band upstairs, take a blanket too!

We had to wait a little while for the food to arrive but the young lady on duty seemed to be working alone. It was worth it though and we had plenty of time so no problem. The food was very nicely presented ..... even my humble cheese sandwich looked good!. We had very nice potato wedges and an excellent real ale all served by a very pleasant young lady. We came here in the summer holidays with our daughter and her 7 year old daughter. Out niece with her husband and their young baby boy. It was a lovely day and we got drinks to have in the beer garden. We have visited this pub many times when we have been visiting family. We are from Hampshire. Our granddaughter had a major meltdown/tantrum in the garden so we took her out of the garden and into the car park away from anyone else. It took at least 20 minutes to calm her down and in that time the very rude landlady came into the car park and said we had to leave her premises. I understand this behaviour is disturbing and not acceptable however the landlady made no effort whatsoever to understand what was going on or why my granddaughter was so distressed. I’m guessing that on a busy weekend evening she has to contend with far more challenging behaviour from her patrons! Not only was she totally unsympathetic but she spent 10 minutes standing over my daughter and her daughter with her arms folded and tutting and commenting. Trust me. This is not at all helpful when a 7 year old is kicking off. It only helps to aggravate a situation. We were all very shocked that after taking my granddaughter away from anyone else and into the car park we were asked to leave. We all had purchased snacks and drinks and felt very upset. None of us will be going back to this pub anymore and added to that we have told other friends and family who were disgusted. What a shame there is no “family friendly”element to this pub. I will add there was only one other gent in the beer garden throughout this time and he was totally understanding

The pub is now under new ownership and is run coincidentally by the owners of the guest house where we had elected to stay. There is a good range of local real ales. Because we visited on Sunday there was a limited menu choise (roast dinner or roast dinner) but we all had a different version - pork, chicken, vegetarian - and we all had more than adequate nicely presented and well cooked portions. havige chosen the "regular" size. We happened to be passing the back entrance to the Monks Walk and stopped to read the plaque telling us that it was the oldest timber framed building in Yorkshire. As lunch time was approaching we decided to give it a try. The interior is fantastic and the history has been preserved superbly. A quirky place with people sat doing crosswords or just chatting away. As soon as we walked in we received a very friendly welcome. A light lunch was all we wanted and we chose the hot beef in chabata sandwiches which were served with a dipping bowl of gravy as well a small pot of horse radish sauce. The bread was fresh and the meal very tasty - lovely tender beef. An excellent choice of beers on offer and you can taste before you buy. Dropped in here one late afternoon during our visit to Beverley and were immediately impressed by the ambience and quiet buzz of the place - so much nicer and more welcoming than TVs and piped music. There was an interesting range of local cask ales at the bar - we enjoyed the Ploughman's Pride from Great Newsome followed by The Centurion's Ghost Ale from the York Brewery, served by welcoming and hospitable staff.Having sat down at the front of the pub, what a revelation it was to find the ancient timbers of earlier buildings within the pub at the rear. The whole building is fascinating in its own right and clearly being cared for in a sympathetic way that demonstrates a pride in its history. The historical information board in an alcove opposite the bar was very useful. This is a pub for a definite revisit next time we're in Beverley.

Me and my work colleagues went for a meal at the Monks Walk, a celebration for getting paid. We pre-ordered our food 2 days before to make it easier for the staff, not like it made any difference they probably couldn't cook beans on toast. The overall atmosphere was nice with drinks round the fire. 45 minutes it took to bring out our food and even then I think they only had 2 microwaves going because the dishes seemed to come out in pairs in 5 minute intervals. As far as potion size goes you'd take one bite and it would be gone. We told staff prior to our night out that one meal had to be gluten-free however when the 2 dishes arrived, the ginger haired lass who seemed to be on another wavelength altogether hadn't the foggiest idea which was which. By the time the last dishes had arrived people who received theirs first had finished! We had to order pudding as we were still wasting away and that was just as terrible. Rock hard brownie and fudge cake, no flavour basically taken out of the freezer to defrost. Cheesecake that was more like yoghurt than anything else. Being a group of ladies that have tried many food places before we saw the chef and offered him some constructive feedback on his food. He was more than arrogant and clearly didn't like being told his food was appalling so stormed off back into the kitchen. We would go back to Monks Walk again, just definitely not for food.

We will always return for drinks but recommend you order food at your own peril. The mash potato, which was tasteless looked as if it had been dished out by a school dinner lady using an ice cream scoop. The chilli, which was swimming in water at the bottom of the bowl was average and not a large enough portion for its £8.95 price tag. As for the vegetables (which looked as if they were frozen), were boiled to within an inch of their lives and any nutrients they may have once had were left in the pan. For a drink and a chat - fabulous!!!

Christmas Eve. Called in at 5,30 for one drink after leaving the pictures. the pub was packed. It was welcoming, warm , safe and full of Christmas cheer. Congratulations to the staff who have worked very hard to put this wonderful old pub back on the social scene . Real ale, reasonably priced wine and chatter. Love it.

We're very sorry Bernard had a bad experience at Monks Walk. Unfortunately he booked through an automated site that has no connection with the present management of the pub - and there was further confusion because we had another booking for 7/8 people at roughly the same time. We were trying to offer a complimentary drink while he waited for a table to become free but, understandably, he was upset and declined. The offer still stands, and I look forward to welcoming you back. As you can see from the way I'm having to reply, we have no access to this Trip Advisor site either, so can't respond directly. Hopefully we'll get this sorted out as well in the New Year.

I have been to this pub at least 6 or 7 times during the last couple of months and really enjoyed a good pint in a nice atmosphere. I was therefore quite keen to try out the food and booked a table for Saturday night for a Christmas party with the extended family. I used their online booking system and received an email confirmation. I even rang the number from the website to confirm whether we could bring the dog. When we arrived on the night to our surprise nobody seemed to know about the reservation. We were told that they don't have an online booking system and the staff was dismissive and unfriendly even suggesting we had made it up despite the fact that i showed them the confirmation email on my phone. This completely spoilt our evening and we had to walk through Beverley with my elderly in laws trying to find a table for 7 people. Very unprofessional and disappointing. Don't go there for food.

Had a nice evening-12 of us. The service was very good. The menu is limited & is called the pub grub menu, so nothing fancy but tasty. Pies were very nice, my wifes tikka masala was enjoyed. Desserts were tasty as well, so can't complain. The only thing to complain about was beer after was "off", so we ended up having red wine-very strange.

Quirky little pub with a nice friendly feel, but the food oh dear, I have just had the worst Sunday dinner ever. Ok here we go, yorkshires, aunt bessies, roasties x2 aunt bessies, carrots (tinned) mash fresh the lumps don't lie, soggy sprouts and rock hard cauliflower, and then there was a few pieces of hard grizzly meat masquerading of lamb on my plate, not good and cost a tenner a head. Come on either employ a proper chef( landlord cooked up this culinary ready meal I really do like this little pub its quirky and warm but the food oh dear here we go. Yorkshires aunt Bessies, roasties x2 aunt Bessies, carrots tinned, mash was fresh the lumps do not lie, sprouts soggy cauliflower rock hard, and as for the dry grizzly bits of meat masquerading of lamb shocking, and all at a tenner a head? Either employ a chef (the landlord was clearly doing the cooking) or stick to what you do well your beer, will be back for a drink but food no chance.

Love this pub, it is so welcoming and the beer is delicious. They have a lot of choice, both bottled and on draught, with local breweries represented as well as the national brands. The pub has an old coaching inn look about it and is in a wonderful setting near the Minster. They have nice warm fires and a live music now and again plus a good selection of pub meals.

This historic old pub in Beverley, Highgate just yards from The Beverley Minster. Serves traditional beers many of which are brewed locally, all are well kept and go down well too.The landlord is knowledgable of the ale that he sells and equally knowledgable of the buildings in which it is served and the nearby Minster. There is a wonderful enclosed beer garden to the rear of Monks Walk.

This is a great pub for a drink with a good choice of beers. I have eaten there twice recently. The Sunday lunch, the meat and veg were over cooked and bland.I tried the sausage sandwich today and although labelled pork and leak, they were some of the cheapest sausages I have had for a long time. Not sure they had seen any meat.Great pub, sort out the kitchen please!!!!

Dropped in early on a Saturday evening for a few drinks. Pleased to find the pub already quite busy. Advertised as a 'chatter pub' and is all the better for it. The beer was excellent and competitively priced. Although the pub has been refurbed since I was last in it still retains its old fashioned charm. The pub is in four parts (two parts either side of an alleyway). The main bar and restaurant are one side with a smaller bar and a pool room on the other. Well worth a visit!

Called in for a pint or two whilst walking around Beverley on a busy Saturday. We had our springer spaniel with us and were pleased to find a dog friendly pub close to The Minster. It has a proper bar with frfiendly staff and good service, the dining room is high beamed and really atmospheric. It has a pub garden with views of the Minster. Can highly recommend The Monks Walk for a drink and a chat or a meal , theres no music playing to disturb your conversation,no TV just people!

The Monks Walk is a chatter pub so no jukeboxes just friendly conversation although after a few pints my friends told me to keep my voice down so just how much you can talk is beyond me.

This is advertised as dog friendly. Only one table in entrance. Not my idea of a dog friendly pub Or sit outside in the smoking area

We waited an hour for eggs and toast. Owner only cared about Door Dash orders going out the door. Given that Courtenay has so many great casual dining places, give this one a pass. Give your business to restaurants that care about providing good service to their customers.

Sarah was very attentive. The rest of the staff need to be trained by her. On booking to see if we could have a table the man wasn't, quite in the room
