Monkmoor fish bar in Shropshire

I have been going to this chip shop my whole life so 44 years and I have never in that time found another chip shop that can hold a candle to the Monkmoor Fish Bar. The chips are cooked to order which means they are always amazing and personal I love the cheese and onion fry it. I live in Sydney now, but always make sure to return for a chip dinner whenever I’m in Shrewsbury and I’m always happy to see the same people who have owned it there after all these years, just as friendly as they have always been. This isn’t just the best chip shop in Shrewsbury, it’s the best chip shop full stop and is a proper Shrewsbury institution.

Great fish bar. Busy on a Friday night. Very friendly owner. 50p scallops go like hotcakes.

Hot tasty cod, well fried, well cooked potatoes. Excellent value/portion size. Only critique is the watery tasteless peas.

Without doubt the best fish and chip shop in Shrewsbury. Fresh tasty food.. great staff and a charismatic owner. Don't listen to the Shropshire star and it's biased award piffle...THIS chippy is the best in the town, bar none hands down!

I would NOT recommend the Doner Kebab...meat was cold, completely tasteless dry and cheap. Had obviously been away from flame for some time...chicken kebab a bit better.

Nice clean place, friendly and helpful staff. Small parking area in front of the shop. Good menu. Quick service. Chips were amazing!

Called Saturday evening 5 fish 3 lots of chips & 2 mushy peas. Fabulous white fish cooked to perfection. Tasty Chips with peas to die for. Will definitely call again when in Shrewsbury. Highly Recommended. Don’t miss this little gem when visiting Shrewsbury!

usually best in town, ordered a mixed chicken kebab with chips, opened it up and lamb meat over the top. spoilt my anticipated enjoyment. it will be a while before I go back. didn't eat any of it. Money down the drain

I often have food delivered via Shrewsbury Eats. Delivery times can be a bit hit and miss on occasion, but the food always arrives warm and is of a good standard and cooked just right. I would highly recommend the food from here as being good value for money.

Went to have mixed meat kebab. Taste was very bad and just after having some of it i felt like dying. I dont know if the food is old or what but defo not worth the money and health to go there!!!!

Currently closed until 11th September. Opening hours haven’t been updated which is super annoying.

I like this place a lot. Staff always friendly. Best chop suey? / spring rolls of any chip shop ive been to (they have the bean sprouts in not like others) Also how does my phone know I've been there? I was sneaking out so husband didnt know I was cheating on my diet!!! 🤭 ❤️ Xx

Cod and chips (with mushy peas). Excellent food, fast service and pleasant staff. The portions are really big. It lives up to the other good reviews - that’s why we went and we’re glad that we did.

Legendary portion sizes (a small chips is enough for 3 people!), fabulous quality, great value and exceptional customer service. Despite arriving just 1 minute before closing, the owner insisted on cooking me 3 fresh fish and chips from scratch (even though there were three portions still in the 'warmer'). In this day and age where customer service is seemingly a thing of the past - and customers are almost treated as an inconvenience - Monkmoor Fish Bar is definitely a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Great pla(i)ce, highly recommended, 10/10.

Great people and lovely fish and chips!

Mouldy cheese and another 46 mile round trip to return when should have been checked when being prepared. Used to be good but way too many corners being cut now.

my favourite chippy in Shrewsbury :) tried quite a few and much much prefer it all from here.

Even though we live on the other side of town this is the only fish and chip shop we use in town everything about the shop is top draw, food is always fresh.

One long queue and then ignored when I got to the front in favour of deliveries. Then I had to wait while they cooked a cod for me. It’s painful watching how slow some staff are, fish was over cooked but tasty. Chips and curry very tasty. Having waited so long and watched others ordered I would say the 3.95 fish and chips looks a great deal.

Best chippy in Shrewsbury by far! I've been getting my chippy chips from Monkmoor Fish Bar for a few decades now! I even live just doors away from another chippy now, but still make the journey to Monkmoor. Occasionally I've had to go elsewhere, but have never enjoyed chips from other chippies as much as I do from Monkmoor, I don't know what they do differently to others, but they certainly know how to fry up an excellent chip in my opinion.

Awesome chippy the boss is very friendly and very professional. Chips are always clean.

The chips were nice and the chicken tikka fantastic. Parking outside has space for around 4 or 5 cars, if parked correctly. 4/5 because I've had better chips, but they were still yummy!

First in the queue at 4.30 pm & ordered fish & chips. The two battered fish at the back looked different... I was correct in my suspicions ... They were obviously reheated from the previous day & my portion was inedible. Very disappointed!!

Ordered loads of fish and chips for my parents significant birthday party. Service was fantastic from ordering to collection - food was hot, very tasty and well appreciated by all. Couldn't have gone better - thank you very much!

The fish & chips are cooked freshly in clean oil. The quality of the food is consistently very good, as is the welcome from the proprietor and staff. Had first take - away since March 20, today. I observed the staff wearing masks and insisting on customers doing the same. I trust this food outlet and feel safe in the premises.

I have been using this place for a good few months now and the food is always yummy. I recommend the kebabs, cod and haddock. Always a friendly service.

Brilliant fish, batter not too thick to make fish unfathomable. The kebab meat with salad and chips is well worth the money, and tasty to boot. Well worth a visit for that chippy treat...yummy.

Dropped in at ten to two for lunch because of good reviews. They were about to close, but nonetheless cooked me a fresh battered cod and chips. Perfect fresh fish fresh oil, clean, tasty, friendly service and wrapped in real paper! No nasty plastic box. Awesome.

Can't speak highly enough of this long standing, friendly chippy. The food is amazing, staff and owners are always on form, fresh, clean and brilliant portions. Well worth a visit! We frequently visit from Church Stretton! Best fish bar in Shropshire by a mile!

Just had a delivery using Shrewsbury Eats. Food arrived piping hot and was delicious and plenty of it. So easy to order and delivery in half an hour. Will definitely use again.

The food is top notch and the staff work very hard to please their customers. The fish is always beautiful and I've got to say that the chips are the best in town. I've never been a fan of chippy chips, always preferred to make my own but while I'm recovering from major surgery my husband has been coming here because he works long hours and i cant stand up to cook, so thank you all for keeping us going while im recovering. Definitely a 5⭐ every time.

Was so good I went there twice in one week whilst on holiday in Shrewsbury. Fresh fish with perfect amount of batter, not too greasy. Excellent chips. Portion sizes are excellent value for money. Friendly staff. Waiting time less than 10 minutes. Usual selection of extras and some you don’t get everywhere like chips & cheese, potion of curry sauce, etc. Would definitely recommend and I’ll be going back for sure.
