The locals seem inordinately proud of this place, but really its a fairly ordinary cafe with two special things going for it - 1. Very good coffee; and 2. Its location by the beach on the undercliff walk - but watch out for the birds (gulls and crows) that will try to steal your food. No sign of anyone called Molly.

1. When asked by an 8-year-old what the flavour of one of your (several) unlabeled ice cream is, the reply 'I'll tell you in a minute; I'm just dealing with the payment' doesn't speak much of care for customer relations. There also doesn't seem to be much of a reason to request details for payment to be made upfront... unless you're expecting customer dissatisfaction perhaps. 2. When serving ice cream in a cone, it's generally considered to be (more) hygienic to place a paper napkin around the cone so that you're less likely to be handling it with unclean hands. When you're serving ice cream in a cone to a child, it's absolutely crucial. After all, you've had a good couple of years to practice so there's really no excuse. 3. One scoop? Are you sure this is what you're serving?? Even the six-year-old commented, unprompted, on the fact that there wasn't enough ice cream. Rather than number of scoops, perhaps a system of sizing similar to clothes should be adopted...XXS, XS, S for example. At this point, payment up front starts to make sense. 4. Why don't you know whether or not your products contain eggs? Do you know which contain nuts? Thought so. So why not eggs? The ice cream window around the corner displays this information nice and clearly (see photo). Not so at Molly's. Anaphylaxis be damned. 5. Service with a smile? Sadly not. Still, who can be bothered at the end of the day?

If I had one chance to do my own Room 101, it would be cafes that clear up before the advertised closing time and/or offer a limited service for their final 30 minutes, just so they can get away early. I was offered no option but tea in a takeaway, presumably, non recyclable, cup at least 15 minutes before the place was due to close. All the seating outside was stacked up. Recently, my good friend Brad, GM of the Spanish Lady pub in Saltdean, asked if I'd like to join him on weekday morning walks along the coast. Yes, absolutely, we're truly blessed in this part of the world, the Undercliff is spectacular! So, off we go to Rottingdean, all we see along the way are smiling people and cheerful dogs, all enjoying their early morning exercise in the fresh air. Molly's is a perfect pit stop, Mocha for Brad, Latte for myself, simply the best I've ever tasted anywhere in the world, and I should know, I adore my morning coffee!Paula is delightfully polite and friendly, it feels so good to start the day with charming people who are clearly happy in their work? I was also introduced to Ali. Those of a certain age will remember "Man About The House", well this young lady IS Sally Thomsett, though even prettier. Again, friendly and charming, thank you ladies for a very warm welcome!Molly's offers a beautiful setting, a veritable hive of activity just along from the beach. Personally, I love to say hello to all the beautiful dogs, they are so fortunate to live by the sea and spend their time in the company of all their good buddies, I wonder if they fully appreciate their good fortune? Today I bought a bag of gravy bones, I'll carry some every time in future, I'm sure I'll make plenty of friends in the coming weeks?Life is good, an early start in good company with sea views and a healthy walk. As spring approaches I feel sure we'll encounter many more people along the way. I take pleasure in offering a glowing recommendation that any day can only be improved by a visit to this excellent little establishment in Rottingdean that goes by the name of Molly's.

Just had to wait 40 minutes for breakfast and missed our train. I was told that the delay was because they were very busy, which clearly wasn’t true as the place wasn’t full. Our order had obviously got forgotten even though they were overstaffed. I counted 4 people serving about 15 customers. The staff were happily talking about their holidays and dating, and taking cigarette breaks, rather than checking the orders had been processed. The chef even came out for a coffee break and gossip - while we had been waiting 30 mins. In fairness they did apologise profusely and took some items off the bill. The breakfast was ok when it came but certainly not worth the wait.

Since the new owner took over I’ve become a regular - the sandwiches are so nice and with *so* much filling, they’re such good value compared to most places. The owner is really friendly and accommodating and I can usually park outside.

Fantastic breakfast. Easily changed tomato and mushrooms for extra sausage and bacon. Clean and staff are lovely. Free tea and coffee with breakfast.
