Mohammad's Halal Fish & Chips in Leicester

This place was once a gem. It was our family go to takeout during my childhood and then continued as an adult. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill over the years. The chips which used to be to die for are always gritty and full of tiny stones. In fact the last time I bought chips I threw them away as they were so gritty to the point they were not edible. I did let the staff know at the time and put it down to a one off. Tonight I paid £10 (fair enough) for 2 large portions of chips for the family. When we all sat down to eat, I could not believe the amount of grit/stones in the chips. The whole lot got binned as again, it was not edible. I can’t believe how they think it’s acceptable to serve food like this. I am very sure that many customers will have complained about it but they obviously don’t care. I won’t ever be wasting my money at this place again!

Quality fish and chips, one of the very best.

One of Highfield's classic takeaway spots, there's a reason it has been around for decades now. The prices are still very good and the food tastes great. Even to this day you get queues out the door. Parking for this place is quite difficult so keep in mind, free street parking around the area is available if you can find a space.

Foods banging but there potion size is small and they ain’t professional at all… bunch of clowns working der and chat air amongst each other!! Prices change my the weather!!

Grilled chicken burger is 10/10 always my go-to. The fish is banging always, and also, the special donner is amazing. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, but this is definitely one of if not the best chippy in Leicester.

I was a regular at this place every time I travel to Leicester from Newcastle. On 16-08-2024 I went to have my usual Donna and chips. The guy who served me had a very bad attitude. As a Muslim he should have good manners and Akhlaq. He never asked me if I will be taking food out or eating it inside. When I sat to he he started calling out to me and saying “hey what are you doing, why didn’t you tell me you are eating in?” Then few other words which he was mumbling under their breath. I was really angry when he did that in front of others but I stayed calm but felt like throwing the food on his face and leave. We family always visit when we come to the IDA and now we won’t be going anymore.

The fish in this place is very small. Yet the price for this fish is very high (£9.50!). When we opened the box at home, I thought for a minute that they may have mistakenly given us a smaller size choice of fish. There are many other more reputable and well known places (eg. on Welford Road) who a) charge less, b) provide much much better portion sizes, and c) even taste much better! And I’m sure as a result they have much more customers. Many people have written a similar review, so it’s clearly general consensus. So I hope prospective customers will consider this review carefully and stay away from Mohammad’s Halal Fish & Chips. Somebody also wrote a review along the lines of, that they are simply just relying on people who come here for convenience (and charging them extortionately!). I agree with this. I would also add that doing this (ie. taking advantage of customers) shows how unprofessional and cunning the owners of this establishment are. This unreasonable concept of over charging customers ultimately will cause the owners to lose out in the end. Only that they will never know it. But I’m sure they would have more customers resulting in better and more profits; only if they didn’t rip off the community who has been loyal to them for many many years. My brother and I have lived in Leicester all our lives. My older brother used to regularly visit Halal as a child in the 80s as my parents used to live nearby. My father still comes here regularly (I will be making a strong recommendation to him about boycotting from now on). I haven’t been here a lot in my lifetime (thankfully!). My wife said it’s her first and last time here! I too will never visit here during the rest of my lifetime. Happy for the owners that they charged me double for what our fishes were worth. In their mind they probably think that earning an extra tenner in profit (from a non returning customer; so a one time sale) is more valuable than say…. continuing to earn the same money (albeit making £2 less profit due to a bigger fish, on a £24 sale for 2 x fish, plus large chips) once a month (for instance) for the next 30 years of my life (and probably the next 80 years of my baby’s and her future family’s life). I think the owners of this shop have been watching too much social media and living in dreamland!!! Very disappointed. 🤷‍♂️

when ever im in leicester i always cone here has to be one of the best home made donner kebab ive tried i love my kebab straight cut so u can get a taste of the meat delicious i have been up and down the country tried alot of doners this up there these guys been making there doner fr 30-40 years a must try if u local….

Best chippie in Leicester! Been eating from here for as long as I can remember. Staff are friendly and always up for a laugh, food tastes amazing and best of all the portion sizes are brill! Recommend trying the special lamb donner tray :)

THERE’S NEVER A SINGLE ORDER WHERE THEY ENSURE YOU’RE GIVEN EVERY SINGLE THING YOU ORDERED. THERE’S ALWAYS ONE THING MISSING!!! AND THEN ALL YOU GET IS A SOFT SORRY, WHILST A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY IS SAT THERE WITHOUT HIS FOOD. PATHETIC SERVICE, THEY WERE NOT EVEN BUSY!!!

Used to be one of the best unfortunately it's now one of the lowest. They are lucky people go to them for convenience. They are so overpriced, full on ripping customers off for a tiny piece of fish. Utter garbage Batter was like dough on the fish, chips were white and hard

Great Cod and Chips, virtually sell everything fast food related. Kebabs, Donner, southern fried chicken, peri peri chicken, pizza sausages, pies etc Service can be a bit slow at times but great food is worth the wait. Always semi-busy Staff are friendly

Best halal fish and chips in Leicester. This place is well known in Leicester as being one of the best iconic chippies that caters to the halal customers that fancy some halal battered sausages and pies with their chips. I come from out of town for the battered sausage and chips, and they have a few desi/Indian options such as half moons and samosas too. If you don't eat halal, you wouldn't find anything special about this place. Be grateful, as if you have too many expectations, you'll be sad in the end.

Came all the way from out of town specially . Second time this has happend. Chips uncooked raw old oil used few days old could taste in chips. Fish not fresh been dipped multiple times in our loads of batter no fish inside. Way overpriced hygiene rubbish. Never coming back.

I ordered large portion of donor meat. I added the pic pls have a look how much donor they put. I’m so disappointed. I just wonder if I order small donor how many pcs I may got😡😃. I advise pls open & make you u got right amount before leave the shop.

Disgusting place, with workers with a horrible attitude. They give you mini sized portions even if you order large, they will give you small box. If you value safety and hygiene and value for money, avoid this place.

Used to be a great place. Now they try to con you with extra small portions. As well as the quality of food going downhill. And the hygiene practices here are very worrying. Wont be going here again.

Best chips. The chilli sauce takes it to another level

One of the most overrated fish&chips shop in Leicester Doner kebab is like rubber. Fried chicken is dark brown Health & safety poor. Staff are uselessall I got to say is close the fish shop. The sauce taste watery. Do not buy your food from Mohammed fish & chips l.

Food is good here. The people are also good and service is usually quick. Keep in mind that this place doesn't take card though and the card machine nearby charge £1.55 per transaction!

We ate here first time fresh naan with seekh kebabs chips and chicken fillet burger and chicken and chips food was nice clean atmosphere kids really enjoyed the food thank you keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍 once we walked in it was not busy after that got very busy 😊

2.5 stars at best. Oily soggy chips and fish, shop in dire need of a refurb, staff looked like they just climbed out of bed for shift. Staff were friendly and the shop has potential but please take some pride in the shop (revamp) and you're attire. Wearing what looks like last night's bed clothes doesn't look good when you are serving meals to the public. I'd be interested to see the food and hygiene score 😐

Best peri-peri chicken and chips. Love their chicken wings. Everything I have bought has been very tasty.

Absolutely fantastic. The food is great. I have seen negative comments regarding food quality and portion size. This is has not been my experience. The food portions were generous. The cod was lovely and flakey with a great batter. I travelled 1 hour and the food still tasted great. The service was great, and even went to great lengths explaining ingredients relating to allergies. I am normally dismissed regarding allegories at takeouts. The only downside is difficulty finding parking.

I've been to so many takeaways in leicester and this by far, hands down had the best chips on earth!!! Oh my days!! I don't know their secret ingredients but it's just divine. I love their special donner too..Great customer service..

Local chippy for years always top quality food

A well established local halal chippy. Very good food, generous portions at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Cash payments only (machines nearby which charge for withdrawals) and can get busy at peak times. Highlights are the donner cob and fish and chips. Both are very generously portioned and well priced. I highly recommend this chippy.

I have to be honest paid 18 pound for 2 dinner in chips one Donner and 2 drinks but the medium donner was 5 pound and literally less then a handful in the smallest box they had ( I ask for it without chips ) I'll add pics without me even taking a bite but even still honestly first time I feel scammed . I hope they don't do this to other customers as they have been established a long time I realise prices are going up it's fine raise your prices but your portions to be so small I can't even think what small donner would be or even if there's a box for it as this was the smallest .

Came from out of town as iv heard good things. Somone with me was excited to try donnar. He brought medium just donner and the box was mostly empty with bit of donnar. He took it on the chin but was obviously disappointed. Would it have been such a hassle to give some more stripe of donnar?

I like the fish and chips, the bread was a little too much but I give that to home-madeness of the place. I wouldnt say the taste is exceptional. It is halal place, I asked if anything is not, there seems to none. Normally would be “halal” fish and chips places also cook pork saussage. It is good to know that this is not that kind of place.

Good food but customer service is very poor

Had the ‘vegetarian’ chips for the whole family as just returned from an Alton Towers trip, the best I’ve had for a long time. The kids cleaned everything out and opinions were unanimous, delicious. I read an earlier negative review and it didn’t match my experience there??? PS: vegetarian chips are fried separately to any fish or meat products.

Sharma and chips are good. But the guy refused to serve me directly from the Sharma machine. He gave from a bucket where he cuts some meat previously from the sharma machine.

Food is below par. Greasy and extortionate. We ordered a fish and chips and paid a fair bob for what they called cod. It was anything but cod. The doner kebab was flavourless and greasy. No salad or sauce. If u wanted anything extra it was charged when in places like Birmingham stuff like that comes as standard. They charged us £3 for 3 tubs of chilli sauce. Ridiculous. I wud rather drive 45 min back to Birmingham to enjoy a good meal than eat here again

POOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION , The employee told me to wait then after when letting him know my name he said “blah blah blah”. This was extremely poor and immature behavior especially of staff. Honestly DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE !!!

Albeit this joint serves the fastest of fat food, it does it better than pretty much anywhere else in Leicester. You will not find a combination of fast foods done to this standard of taste and quality.

Been going here for decades, but only adding a review in 2021! For as long I can remember Mohammad"s Fish & Chip shop has been an excellent choice for the simple staple of a fish supper or even a small bag of chips. What else do they do well... Lots! Definitely try their special doner. 👌🏽 How about Masala Fish. 👌🏽 I'd never really tried masala fish other than from a few select places. But my in laws were over and I thought I'd buy a couple to take home and they really enjoyed it. In fact we all did. So that's testament to how nice that is as it's made fresh in the flat griddle and although there's a wait, its well worth it! We've even been cheeky and had £1 chip cone if we're passing. 👍🏽 It's not exactly high street but that's all part of the charm and we really enjoy going here.

Food was great but they forgot one of the drinks.

I came from Birmingham to attend a clinic appointment and popped in to buy some food. I had a special chicken donor meat with chips and salad. It was delicious. A bit pricey and the portion was small, however it was well worth it.
