Modbury Chinese Takeaway in South Hams

On holiday, fancied a take away, had a Chinese from here. Not the best, not the worst. Would use again.

Decided to choose Modbury Chinese this evening as it was the closest Chinese take away to where we live, we normally go to Springfield in Elburton but thought we would give Modbury a try, we found it rather expensive, probably 25% more than most other Chinese take aways, unfortunately the increased cost was shown in the size or quality of the dishes, they weren’t horrible by any stretch of the imagination if fact quite pleasant but not worth the extra costs, overall our experience was ok, food nice, staff pleasant, shop a little out dated and grubby looking and very over priced

Everything was delicious and portions were generous too. The food wasn't too salty which is perfect for us! Thank you for delivering to Ringmore and an extra special thanks to your delivery driver for being so lovely ✨

Had a big order for a birthday - the food was delicious- not greasy, fresh, and really tasty! We are thrilled and this will now be our regular take away!

Probably the worst Chinese I’ve had. I ordered crispy duck in plum sauce, the meat was extremely dry and the batter on the king prawns was soggy. Egg fried rice and Chow mien was awful too. Threw it away to avoid feeling unwell.

It’s a Chinese restaurant so why would you order fish and chips, plenty of other places to get that if you want it so I would highly recommend using the name of the place to guide you in your choice of food………on that basis the CHINESE FOOD is usually excellent, friendly service, good value, tastes excellent, highly recommended but not for pizza, fish and chips, pasties, pies, sausages etc etc, go Chinese, it is most delicious

Disappointing after a long day and feeling very hungry . Ordered a few veggie options, chips, rice and spring rolls. Everything bland , tasteless and curries watery. Best part veggie spring rolls. Prob one of the worst Chinese meals we’ve ever had.

The sweet and sour sauce was like vinegar, the plum sauce was 60% oil. Missed a portion of rice off of the order. Disappointing

I have been ordering from Modbury Chinese for years and always thought the food was very good. Last weekend I made my normal order which was delivered quickly so no complaints there. When I opened the food and began to put it onto my plate I found THE biggest thick, long, black hair in the special rice. Immediately I felt sick to my stomach. I couldn’t eat that dish and threw it away. I bravely tried the other dish I had ordered which was chewy and completely unappealing. Unfortunately the takeaway had been going downhill for months and that has now confirmed that I will never return. I dread to think about the cleanliness of the place

Excellent food and very quick! Walked in on a Friday night and placed a huge takeaway order for 5of us. Everything cooked beautifully and tasted amazing.

UPDATED: 2nd time ordering - food was not great. Singapore fried rice is supposed to have prawns & other meats - there was 1 prawn and no meat in it. Chips were dry. Pork & chicken balls were dry and more batter than meat. Honey & garlic ribs are supposed to be covered in a sticky sauce but they were sat in a water & oil mix. As shown in photos. All meals were not hot when delivered either. Will NOT be returning ever again. Called them to complain to no avail - all of a sudden it was difficult to understand me. Only giving 1 star as Google won’t allow 0 stars. 1st time ordering: Food was lovely and well made. However the experience this time round wasn’t so nice. My son had ordered duck in plum sauce and thankfully it was me who plated his food, as the polystyrene tub that the sauce came in had melted and the lid fused because the sauce was extremely overheated. As I picked it up out of the box it was delivered in, it all broke and the sauce scolded my hand. I’m all for having hot food delivered but there is a limit and this was just clearly way too hot! I called Modbury Chinese to let them know what happened but she wasnt very concerned and quite unsympathetic, more so interested in telling me how the chef cooks the food……..just thankful it wasn’t my son.

Nothing memorable to say. Asked if the spring rolls were vegetarian and the lady said yes, then I found meat at home when I started eating.

Absolutely foul. Crispy duck was soggy. Suspect it had been reheated from the day before or something. All fat no meat. Totally inedible and straight in the bin. If you were smart enough to check reviews first then well done! Get a ready meal from the co op instead!

Friendly, nice food, ask for help, they will. Also very quick and knowledgeable for your needs, I love them

I have never had a bad experience or had to return food. Usually get free pawn crackers, which is the difference between 4 and 5 star on this occasion. What they do, they do well but don't expect a groundbreaking culinary experience at this price point.

Don’t waste your money, chips are half soggy and half rock hard! Almost tasteless as well as the sausages being soft and mushy.

Not many veg in chow mein, not even in the special chow mein, all noodles mostly. No sauce, not even in the special, so dry n bland.

Very good. Vast choice of dishes. Good value for money. Food was fresh and delicious. Service speedy and with a smile. Would definitely recommend it.

The takeaway was good on this occasion. It arrived hot and on time.

I am sad to be writing this about my local Chinese but over the past few months it really has gone down hill, I went there the other night with my daughter just for some regular food (chicken fried rice and sweet and sour chicken balls) well what can I say, the chicken balls I think have been reheated a number of times and were rock hard and the rice, well…… sorry but it was disgusting even my daughter threw it in the bin, thank god for the co op there, we had to go get ourselves a nice frozen pizza!! DO NOT USE THIS DISGUSTING CHINESE!!! So disappointing as it’s our local!!!!!

Avoid, bland and not much flavour. Crispy duck was soggy and overly fatty, undercooked, sweet sour pork was the opposite and was rock hard with the sauce being the best part yet the colour was of putting, glowing red, even our 7yr old commented on it, had a quarter crispy duck, chicken chow mein, sweet sour pork, chicken in black bean sauce, with the chicken in black bean sauce was actually very nice, so to some it up, if you have to eat here, go for the chicken in black bean sauce, all the other dishes we ordered were awful.

Really wanted it to be ok, just wanted a basic Chinese that I could eat and be contented with. It's pretty horrible really. Crispy chilli beef doesn't have anything but air fry (its my favourite dish so have had plenty of others, I know what it should be like) Sweet and sour sauce is luminous red and only tastes of vinegar, its really not sweet and sour. Rice was fine, chicken and cashew in yellow bean sauce wasn't in a yellow bean sauce it was a mix of oyster and yellow bean. Prawn toast was really thin and not really a prawn toast because it lacked any prawns. I tried to give it a 2 because they seem nice people but the food is really poor. Should have trusted the reviews. :(

Ordered from here for the first time, was very impressed with honey mustard chicken (personal favourite) the Singapore vermicelli was tasty, not too spicy. The beef chow mein was very nice. Generous with the meat servings. Will order from here again

We have this regularly and I cant fault it. Always comes when it should and always delicious and always hot Free prawn crackers always helps too

They do decent food and they are friendly they just seem afraid to give u decent size bag of prawn crackers

The food was absolutely Disgusting could not even eat it it smelt like it was of they didn’t even bring the right food we ordered and then charge £3.50 for delivery should not be aloud to serve food

Avoid fish and chips. Fish all mushy and tasted more like a crab claw crossed with a prawn cracker! I was sick 3 times through the night. 1star is too much.

Very nice Chinese food. Ordered a selection of dishes which were all hot & tasty. Only downside for me was couldn't get through on the phone so had to visit to order and then wait. Place appears to be open for take out Thurs - Sun and is cash only

Found this place’s menu online when staying at challaborough bay holiday park. Trip advisor reviews made me a bit apprehensive to call up but I’m glad I did. Service was friendly, food was plentiful, very tasty, and excellent value - we went for set menus A and C as there were 6 of us and there were leftovers, we loved every dish, and it came to around £12/head. Plus they delivered to the caravan site down all those narrow lanes, in the dark, within an hour of ordering! Can’t fault it.

Good Chinese takeaway. Huge menu, including Thai selections. Tasty dishes, good service. We were down here for a week and fancied a Chinese, worth a visit.

Ordered our food as soon as it was open at 5 got told delivery at 615-630 phoned up to check on delay, it turned up at 700 chips were reheated. Wouldn't recommend but limited when on parkdean site.

Extremely disappointing experience. Bag collapsed dropping all our food on the street, outside the door. Went inside to ask for assistance and was give a plastic bag and a tissue. Why did they not put it in a plastic bag in the first place? Did not offer to replace the food. Avoid.

Batteered king prawns - never had them from a Chinese takeaway before but they were LOVELY! Nice staff and quick service too; but they don't take cards so you need cash which can be difficult as the cashpoint is inside another shop!

On a recent trip to Modbury, Devon our family decided a fish and chips dinner would be nice. Since the Fish and Chip shop closed a number of years ago we noticed that the Chinese restaurant was serving it. Once home, we unwrapped them only to find very little fish was evident.Surrounding the meager portion of fish there was a huge amount of batter, literally swimming in oil. I couldn't eat any, it all went in the bin!

Just had basic veggie meal but lovely spring rolls and tasty veg, not overdone, Servie was quick and friendly and food was piping hot.

large meal order for 17 people, delivered on time, hot and delicious fully recommend this take away, would definitely use them again when at the Pennymoor site.

I was only passing through Modbury and picked up some chips from here which were really tasty. They were cooked in 5 minutes and were piping hot and stayed hot for a long time.

Had £150 of food very big variety all very delicious delivered on time and very helpful, no complaint from a group of 17 people, we would use them again

Bang average food, some of it not cooked properly. Chow mein tastes funny. Walked in expecting to pay our £60 bill on card, only to be told it’s cash only.... wonder why... 🤔

Being a veggie for once I was not disappointed when the other half suggested a takeaway. I had tofu with mixed veg and Szechuan sauce and very tasty it was!

Just tried to order a meal from here, lady wouldn’t take the order as it was under £15 for delivery, states on the menu online, “no minimum order” tried to tell me its not online. Won’t be using them again disgraceful attitude

Had a take-away for myself and my wife. Food was generally very good but the spring rolls were a disappointment. nevertheless, I would still return and very much enjoyed the meal.

Placed an order via phone and I was informed the food would be delivered in 40-45 minutes. Waited an hour and 15 minutes and decided to call to ask where my order was, which they said the delivery driver is waiting at another address with there order but they are not home and waiting for them to arrive home. My order finally arrived after waiting an hour and 40 minutes and of course my order was luke warm. I am extremely disappointed my food was sat in the car while they waited for someone else to return home.

I don't know how they manage to make food taste so disgusting. The waiting area was filthy and I only received one portion of Pancake Roll even though i ordered and paid for two portions. Avoid this place!

Our usual Chinese (the golden bridge in Ivybridge) was closed so we took a gamble and went to Modbury. The gamble did not pay off. My wife’s special chow mein had inedible tough meat that even our dog turned his nose up at and he’s a Labrador! My chicken Hong Kong style was not nice at all. It had one bit of pepper in the bottom, this dish should have green pepper, onion and carrots. The chips were soooooo salty. Surely if you like that much salt you can add it at home, don’t assume everyone likes their food that salty! Mother in laws chicken curry had that disgusting reformed meat that’s like jelly which again was inedible. Will never return.

On the extreme end of utterly disgusting. Should not be allowed to sell food. Chinese people would not touch this food, so why should we? Straight in bin.

I do not normally complain about food outlets but this is an exception. Our meals were truly dreadful. Wet slimy and it looked stewed not stir fried. I have bee eating Chinese food for 65 years and if my first had been like this it would have been my last.

We had a takeaway from this Chinese whilst staying with family in Modbury, the food was delicious and a really good price too! We had Satay Chicken, Beef Cantonese style and lemon chicken and all three dishes were lovely.

Chow mein had little taste. Wouldn't recommend it. On holiday in Devon so def won't be using them again. The attitude of the woman serving needs to use some manners too. Very abrupt as she spoke on the phone taking an order.👎👎👎

Respectable Chinese takeaway offering the usual mix of dishes. Given the lack of competition in the area everything we tried was pretty good.

I can honestly say this is the worst Chinese I've ever eaten or in this case one mouthful was enough,what they charge is horrendous prices and when I ordered 3 cans of coke with are food at a £1.00 a can is clearly said not for single resale so they shouldn't be allowed to do this and I will be reporting.

Great to find a takeaway local to the beach, about 4 miles. Well needed fish and chips while camping in torrential rain .

arrives quite quickly for home delivery if you order earlier in evening. Had a mix of different meals for an evening home with friends and all said they enjoyed it.

The most disgusting Chinese meal I’ve ever had. Really is poor. Burnt, dry and didn’t match the authenticity of any of the dishes i ordered that I’d had many times elsewhere. Customer service was rude and initially tried to refuse my complaint before offering a refund. Avoid at all costs.

Unfortunately it was just an average Chinese. I think I'd give it a miss from now on. Poor quality food. Delivery was fast though.

Myself and my boyfriend live in Kingsbridge, approx 15 mins away. We prefer this takeaway to the one in our town, and will choose this one over the one in Kingsbridge any day.

Our food was tasty, ready for collection on time and cooked well. Not greasy or dry as some takeaways can be but all delicious and flavoursome. Will be going back again!

A nice change to home cooking whilst staying at the Caravan club site in Modbury. Good food large portions and free delivery with an hour too.

Very quickly made (only had to wait ten minutes for collection and we ordered quite a bit!), delicious food. Highly recommend!

Delicious, especially the duck pancakes, beef with mushroom and sweet & sour chicken. I would definitely order again if I lived nearer.

Don't ever order from this 'chinese' Ordered £26 worth of food and sent it all back! The beef chow mein tasted and smelt like cat food had jelly and fat all over the "beef" the noodles and veg was soggy and we'll over cooked. The duck fried rice, well I don't even know if that was duck! It was covered in fat, oil and God knows what. Let's just say all of it and put me off Chinese! Do not waste your time or money on this place!

Recientemente tuve que conseguir té por sólo uno. Así que me fui a modbury china. Pedí el curry con arroz Singapur. Fue genial. Era un lugar poco concurrido. Entré y pedí sólo duró de 15 a 20 minutos para estar listo. Ideal para subir y bajar la calle principal modbury. Sin duda comprar aquí

Buena comida es siempre caliente y muy sabroso, el personal es amable bien vale la pena el viaje, ya que este es el mejor de la China.

Un pedido, luego visitamos el Exeter Inn por una pinta. Nuestra orden era caliente, sabroso y esperando por nosotros. En el menú para elegir y ha visitado en varias ocasiones. Imprescindible si se aloja en el páramo de Vista a sólo 3 millas de distancia!...

Mi esposa y yo realmente disfrutamos de este Chino por primera vez. La carne estaba tan húmeda y llena de sabor. Lo recomendaría para una buena comida China local llevar

We stopped off at the Modbury Chinese Takeaway for Fish and Chips on our way back to our holiday lodge what a mistake that was, they were absolutely awful. I have read reviews where people say there Chinese food is good but I can say from experience that the Fish and Chips aren't. I cut into the fish and you could not decipher the Fish from the soggy batter, it was tasteless making me think that the Fish was not fresh, also it does not state what kind of Fish. Be warned as I could not eat it and wasted £5.20, if I was staying nearer I would have taken it back and complained.

Will never use these idiots again. Food was nasty. Overcooked and hard. Took over an hour to deliver. Then forgot half the food. Onother hour still waited for the rest. Ended up phoning them to tell them where to stick it.

We ordered a meal to be delivered to our caravan park, Woow what a surprise, very prompt delivery, good value and excellent food, quality and portion size. Yum Yum

Smashing wee takeaway. We used it after long day touring and too knackered to cook. Even after 5 minute drive back to campsite food still piping hot. Every dish was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Recommended for anyone who enjoys Chinese cooking

We are staying locally for 1 weeks holiday. The food was good. Would not say it's the best food I have ever had, but it was a good 4 star, due to location a good quality food & price.

Fantastic delivery ordered two banquet meals for a group of 6 people and had loads of food. Brilliant quality, really tasty and great delivery so friendly and helpful.

Had my first Chinese here and loved it been and tried few dishes the pork and beanshouts beef and mushrooms pancake rolls the best has to be the special fried rice.

Food tasted wonderful and it was great value for money. We had a meal for four and there was absolutely loads of tasty food.

We recently stayed at the ParkDean site at Challaborough Bay and while the site itself was very quiet with fantastic views the takeaway options were limited.We tried the cod and chips from Fryer Tucks which was just outside the site but it was horrible. The guy running the place was very friendly but kept you chatting while your greasy food went cold. As you have to drive out of Challoborough to get anywhere we passed this Chinese in Modbury and gave it a try.I don't know what it is they do to their food but let me tell you the taste was fabulous. We have never tasted a Chinese as good as this and we've had a few!Even the curry sauce had this extra layer of flavour that was just wonderful.If you're in the vicinity or staying at the ParkDean site then I would definitely take the trip to Modbury. You wont regret it.
