Well, where should I begin? Upon arriving at the car park, I was greeted with stunning views, which made a great first impression. However, upon entering the hotel, I noticed that the restaurant was extremely busy, and it appeared that there were limited staff members available. Our initial interaction with the staff was not particularly welcoming, as we were told to wait outside for 20 minutes before being checked in due to the high volume of guests. Personally, I believe that this is not an ideal way to greet guests upon their arrival at a hotel. Despite waiting patiently for the specified time, unfortunately, no one came to assist us. As a result, I waited an additional 15 minutes at the reception before finally being able to check in. After a lengthy wait of 35 minutes for the check-in process, we were shown to our room. It appeared that the room was in urgent need of renovation and investment. The decor was extremely outdated and basic. One point to note is that the main road nearby, which seems to be mistaken for a racetrack by many drivers, experiences constant traffic even in the early hours of the morning. The noise level is comparable to sleeping next to a racetrack or a motorway. Evening meal. We had a reservation for a table at 6 pm, but the staff informed us that 7:30 pm would be more suitable for them. We understood that they might have had a lot of reservations for the evening. However, when we went downstairs at 6 pm, the restaurant was empty, and it remained so even at 7 pm. For breakfast, the options are limited to English breakfast, vegetarian options, or cereals. Similarly, the hot drink choices are limited to tea or coffee. The quality of the breakfast was satisfactory, but it could be improved. Additionally, there was only one staff member handling all aspects of the breakfast service, including taking orders, cooking, working the bar, bringing out food, and managing the reception for booking out. While this individual did an admirable job, it is evident that they require assistance, as the workload is excessive for a single person, let alone two. Conclusion. If you are seeking a one-night stay at a basic accommodation, the Millstone Inn may suffice. However, I must admit that it is a marginal choice, and I would not recommend an extended stay. The hotel rooms are in urgent need of not only a thorough deep cleaning but also significant investment to bring them up to an acceptable standard. While the staff is friendly and hardworking, they would benefit from additional training to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, especially during periods of staffing shortages. Regrettably, I cannot recommend the Millstone Inn for future stays. Despite its charming location, the overall condition of the hotel requires significant improvement.

This is our 7th trip to The Millstone - an annual treat every first Saturday in October walk across Stanage Edge, stay over at The Millstone then walk back to Sheffield the morning after. Unfortunately, the quality of the accommodation is now very poor and in desperate need of a refurb which the lovely lady who showed us to our room 'Stanage' informed us was taking place in the not too distant future. There was a strong odour coming from the bathroom and our tv just said no signal. I reported this to the young man who checked us in and he said it was just a poor signal in the area even though we had not experienced this problem previously and our phones connected to wifi ok. When we checked behind the tv the morning after, we found the aerial cable had been pulled away from the connection ... such simple checks should be done prior to visitors checking in. Very basic tea and coffee facilities but the full english breakfast was very good this morning. I feel for £163.20, it was very expensive for the quality of accommodation provided. The food is not cheap, whilst ok, it's not something to write home about. Very disappointed this year and doubt we will be returning next year. No complaints re the staff - they were all lovely and friendly. Money needs to be reinvested into this place to make it a favourite again.

Everything about our visit was just amazing. The inside was lovely and all set up ready for diners. Such a lovely welcome from the landlady Claire. Wide variety on pump and nice wines. Brilliant prices especially for the main meals. We had a few starters to share that came out on a grazing board and were all very very nice. We sat out in the beer garden with great views. Overall Everything was perfect and we will definitely be returning.

My wife and I had Sunday lunch yesterday, using a Groupon Voucher. The Millstone has been something of an institution for many years, it was first granted a licence in 1838 and has existed in its present form since 1929. There have been some negative reviews recently but clearly, there is a wind of change here because our experience, though not perfect was much more positive than other previous reports. There is a very attractive outside area with comfortable furnishings and the interior appears to be undergoing something of a facelift, the bar area is smart and welcoming. We ate from the Sunday lunch menu, both having a starter of baked camembert, followed by roast beef, both courses were very good indeed. The starter was crispy, and well presented with a small salad and cranberry sauce. The main course was the best that we have eaten on Sunday lunch for some time, the meat was thickly carved and had excellent flavour, plentiful and well cooked vegetables included mashed and roast potatoes, braised carrots and parsnips, cauliflower in cheese sauce and shredded cabbage with peas. Not forgetting a great attempt at Yorkshire pudding, notoriously average in restaurants, this was fresh and crispy enhanced by flavoursome gravy. This place is clearly a work in progress, the service was not great, too many young untrained staff, but nothing that can't be solved with some investment in training. The saving grace here was the excellent Manager Clare who did her best to keep things ticking over, she needs time and support to succeed. There is plenty of convenient car parking. The Millstone deserves another try, it's a bit patchy at present, but well with a try.

Called in for Sunday roast. Staff were welcoming. Ordered two soups. And two roast dinners, both were very tasty, although not that hot. We ate everything and really enjoyed it. Had we had gone to the toilet first , we probably wouldn’t of eaten here, It was the disabled toilet, as we couldn’t find the other loos, But anyway. Mouse poison box on the floor, filthy floor and sink, and splash back , A storeroom door propped open ,and awfully dirty pillows etc in the store cupboard. When I went back to our table ,I noticed the floor behind the radiator was very dirty, with a Christmas bauble amongst the dust! Sorry , but it all needs a good clean 😞

We used to come here quite a lot for Sunday lunch as it used to be a lovely carvery with lots to choose from and delicious food. We went yesterday (Sunday) and found it had changed, no carvery and the usually busy pub was sparse in custom. Once we received our meals I knew why! We both ordered roast beef. We struggled to cut the meat and it was chewy, roast potatoes were sloppy, but the green beans were raw and to top it off the Yorkshire puddings were frozen. I would've mentioned this to our server however we weren't asked how our meals were or if everything was OK. We ate what we could wrapped the meat in a napkin for the dog (the meal wasn't cheap and we'd already paid) and left!

Room directly over the kitchen and the window left ope so we arrived to smell of cooked fish. The oddest room I have ever stayed in. Low chair meant couldn’t see in the mirror even though I am over six feet. Lots of marks on the walls, paint peeling off the window frames. Wondered why only three pillows on a double bed, found the fourth one stuffed down behind the bed. The room was not cleaned or the tea and biscuits topped up during our two day stay. Toilet seat loose, shower door handle broken and the shower leaked all over the bathroom floor. Breakfast on the first day we had the novelty of half a slice of black pudding, on the second day we got a whole slice but did have to wait 40 minutes. To be fair they do have a notice for about five vacancies , it shows. Came away feeling that it wasn’t worth the money. One thing to recommend it, if firm beds are you thing it is the place for you. Unfortunately for my they aren’t.

We've just come home after 2 nights at the Millstone, we had a lovely clean spacious room with a good sized modern bathroom, shower was lovely, big fluffy bath sheets/toiletries. The bed was so clean and comfy, this hotel has character, does need some updating and wi fi wasn't good but it's still a lovely place to stay. The views over Hope valley are spectacular, the roof terrace was a lovely place to sit. The hosts were very chatty, pleasant and helpful, advising on the places to visit, even offered to pick us up from the village a mile away if we found the walk back too tiring! The breakfasts were delicious, we had the full English, cooked perfectly and hot, plenty of choices, fruit, yogurt, cereals croissants, toast, tea, coffee juices. You certainly came away with a full stomach. We ate there in the evenings and again not disappointed, the hanging chicken kebabs was delicious 😋. If we visit this area again we wouldn't hesitate to stay here.

We enjoyed our stay at the Millstone, the breakfasts were very good , full English not sparing on the portion size. Our rooms were comfortable although the bathroom could be better if either shelving or a stand was placed in their for our tioletries. Stunning views over the Hope valley , downside is that to get into the village you walked, downhill on the way there but uphill on the way back or waited for the bus which stopped outside the hotel . Plenty of places to park if you drove down. Couldnt get connected to the wifi which was especially irritating for my daughter although to be quite honest was quite relaxing.

Our family group met for lunch at the Millstone. We were told that they didn't intend opening today and had only done so after seeing our reservation. We were then told what wasn't available on the menu, it would have been easier to tell us what was available. One of our party could not find anything to eat, the remaining made their choices and most were disappointed. The fish goujons were mini fish fingers, the sausage was pink and there was no coleslaw with the sandwich.

I had hoped the new lick of paint may injected some much needed life into this waining establishment but sadly not. Service dreadful food worse. The menu is drab, limited and painfully old fashioned. We decided to keep it simple and order a Sunday roast. The pub was in pretty quiet which in hindsight was unsurprising however, this meant the staff had very little to do. I therefore expected to be able to order swiftly at the empty bar but to my amazement I was completed ignored whilst the staff made phone calls, ate and chatted amongst themselves. After a comical period of time I interrupted their conversation at which point the elderly chap, who behaved like a character from faulty towers, declared he wasn't allowed to use the till to place my order. So again I waited and waited until eventually someone arrived who could use a till. Completed bizarre. The food arrived around 45 minutes later, it could not have been more disappointing. I have never had a meal which was so devoid of flavour. Beyond bland. I desperately tried to extract something from it by coating it in salt and pepper but nothing would do. To describe it as hospital or plane food would be an insult to both. Unimaginative veg, dry meat, watery gravy, over cooked Yorkshire, there were issues with every dreary item on the plate. Avoid at all costs.

The staff have worked hard to create a safe post COVID environment and despite being really busy check in was handled really well. The room was spotless and had had an upgrade flooring and skirting. The open plan wardrobe is a bit Heath Robinson but will be easier to clean I’m sure. I had no issue with the continental breakfast left on the landing as there was plenty of fresh fruit and yoghurts in the fridge. We knew this was the case as we checked the website. The toaster is available for those who want it too. We had a drink outside and the pint of Millstone Bitter was really well kept. Clearly a busy and popular spot for diners and despite the volume of people the staff were friendly and professional. Despite all this I thought the rooms were a little over priced for what they are and with no cooked breakfast I think the prices could be lowered. However for one night it was more than adequate to stay here and is a great base for walking in the area.

1st time visit on a Sunday afternoon. External impressions are that there is a bit of wear & tear but when you realise how old the building must be this is unavoidable and any modernisation would spoil the place. Inside was very homely, warm and welcoming but it was a touch cramped getting to the bar with customers and staff all over the place. That was our issue here - we only wanted drinks on this occasion but once served saw that all the tables (although several were empty) all had reserved signs on for diners. We asked at the bar if there were any free tables for a limited time but were told (politely) that there were not. So we ended up outside which although I'm sure is very pleasant in the summer months was not ideal in late December !! I'll come back in the summer months but surely with a place as big as this there could be some consideration given to non-diners and a small indoors area allocated to them at such times - or maybe reserved signs not being put on the tables well before a pre-booked dining time ?? All in all a nice place and an impressive building - would have just rather not been cast out into the cold on this visit....

We went for a birthday meal and was disappointed. My husband had prawns in spicy tomato and chorizo sauce with Italian bread. When the starters came they didn’t look particularly appetising but we had to eat. My husband’s prawns still had the shells on! His Italian bread was actually a stale pita bread - didn’t see a single pita bread in Italy the many times we have visited. We complained to the waiter who just stood there looking blank. He said he would tell the chef. I thought he should replace the dish but my husband not wanting to make a fuss said it would be ok. He then proceeded to pick through the hot sauce and de-shell the prawns. He did tell the chef because from where we sat I could see into the kitchen - the chef didn’t like the criticism. We both wanted sirloin but they had run out - apparently they had a rush on steak - hard to believe because the place was empty. A guest staying at the hotel brought his sun in and tried to look for a place without a speaker because the night before there had been swearing in the music. When we went to pay the waiter moved so fast from behind the bar. I would have expected possibly not to have to pay for the starter but the bill was full. We paid quickly and left never to return.

We went on Tuesday lunchtime with friends and had an excellent meal. The lamb shank was delicious, extremely well cooked. It’s a casual friendly place and Noreen was lovely, efficient and helpful with a charming sense of humour. We will certainly be lunching there again.

Visited on Saturday for lunch and ordered a BLT sandwich which contained 2 fish bones! Absolutely disgusting. The reaction of the chef was disgusting too, they screamed and shouted in the thinly walled kitchen and basically accused me of putting the fish bones in there myself. Avoid this place at all costs for your own safety. Goodness knows what goes on in their kitchen. The mind boggles.

Arrived 4.15, Carvery Usually finishes at 3pm, so were pleased it was still open. Meat was of good qulaity, generous portions. Veg could have done with a good stir just to freshen it up. Plates could have been warmer but overall a good valued Carvery.

Just bypass everything, go for the pie....It's pie....top class pie....first rate pie....gold standard pie...super pie....if carling did pie!!!. We didn't try anything else, but if pie is the standard, it's going to be pretty good.

I have been coming to the Millstone Pub for many years. In recent times it’s started going down hill but the one thing that has remained good has been the Sunday carvery. My husband and I visited today and can honestly say it’s the worst carvery I’ve had. Extremely thin cut beef & the most insipid looking veg. The veg was always fantastic - cooked well and great choice - today the roast potatoes had been cooked for so long that I couldn’t actually cut in to one of them, there were parsnips, white cabbage, mashed potatoes & cauliflower cheese (with barely any sauce) - all of which were bland and insipid looking. Carrots and green beans were ok and provided some colour. The gravy was incredibly thin and watery. Vegetarians also note that there was only 1 gravy which was beef based - they offered vegetarian options on the carvery but didn’t have vegetarian gravy!! My Yorkshire pudding so well done I couldn’t cut in to the side of it and only managed to eat the base. The staff were all pleasant but were very disorganised and didn’t seem to know much about the food they were serving. Very very disappointed to see this place go downhill - despite living very locally we won’t be returning now. Such a shame.

We've been coming here for Sunday carvery for about 3 years. The vegetables were always to die for, always ingeniously cooked. Today, however, all the vegetables were extremely bland. No colour on the parsnips, plain boiled cabbage. A good selection but very boring. No roast potatoes!!! The guy serving tried to get the dish refilled but the rest of the staff ignored his pleas. The meat was still good. As it was the vegetables that originally attracted us I think we will think twice before going back.

The food was served very quickly and was very nice. A good selection to choose from. We had diner and breakfast here and bother were equally good. A good sized restaurant but somewhat dated. The place could do with a refurb and freshen up

The Sunday carvery is truly outstanding - the best I've experienced anywhere. There was an excellent helping of 3 meats (there is a cheaper 1 meat option) and a good choice of well cooked help yourself veg. There were a few negatives - they lost our table reservation, they got the coffee order wrong (but replaced it without any fuss) and the beer was cloudy. It was the first pint out of the pump and had not been pulled through properly before serving but when the manager was called she replaced that too without any grumbles. A bit better organisation and beer management would have been welcome but the food was so outstanding that it would be wrong to give this place less than 5 out of 5

Enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch with friends at this friendly and welcoming pub, followed by a walk into Hathersage. The views from the Millstone’s carpark are fantastic, and set the scene for a great afternoon in the Peaks.

Very friendly staff and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely visit again and will leave recommendation in visitor book at our holiday barn. Many thanks.

We went on bank holiday Monday evening and grabbed a table outside to enjoy the gorgeous weather. The inn allows dogs so we took our two with us and the staff were more than happy to accommodate them bringing fresh water when needed.

Stopped here on the way back from the Peaks as I had read previous reviews. With such a prime location, we found the interior dated and lacking. They had veg soup on the menu, waitress brought me a bowl of regurgitated cheese soup with bits of raw onion and a "skin" forming on the top, she said that they had got the soup menu wrong - didn't even ask me if i wanted something different. Husband's BLT was cheap sliced bread with a few bits of lettuce. The Log fire was one of these pretend things. No wonder the place was empty. The staff were not interested and we spent the whole time listening to their general chit chat. DON'T GO unless things radically change.

We were a group of four out for a casual lunchtime meal. There were few people in but on a cold February Wednesday lunchtime that was hardly surprising. I left the others perusing the menu and went to the bar for drinks. The guy behind the bar took my order and said he would bring the drinks to the table. Said drinks arrived swiftly and he gave us time to decide what food we wanted. He took our order and the food arrived in good time. We had Shepherd's Pie, Lasagna, Lemon Sole and a Venison Burger. Everyone thought the food very nice indeed. I had the burger and was delighted with the home made tomato sauce which I think had a dash of fennel. I said how much I liked the sauce when he came to check the food was OK and he brought me some more!

Great carvery 12 to 3pm. We usually go at 2pm. Food always hot and fresh. Choice of beef pork or turkey or veggie options such as sausages etc. Mashed potatoes roasties, carrots turnip roasted parsnip broccoli cabbage cauliflower, stuffing, crackling, yorkshire puddings etc. Help yourself. If you want seconds you can go and get it. Usually find I,ve got enough on plate especially after Glynn has put the meat on it before I start on the veg!

After walking nearby this was the first place we spotted for lunch. Massive car park and lots of tables. The decor is what I would call traditional country pub which is exactly what the place is. Looked at the menu and the specials board and decided to go for the liver and bacon instead of a snack. The food was beautiful. Probably the best liver and Bacon I have ever had. Quality ingredients and clearly cooked fresh. The whole place was spotlessly clean. The only poor decor I spotted was were some yob or two had damaged the pictures on the wall of the gents. All the staff were very friendly and the place has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We will be back again I am sure.

When you reserve a table you expect to be in the restaurant, not stuck in the bar near the drafty door! The service was awful - surly and all too much trouble. The food was disgusting - never tasted anything quite like it to be honest. The tables were sticky and dirty and the toilets absolutely filthy.

I ate lunch at the Millstone with my wife and two young children, the service was the best I've experienced in a pub for several years; the staff were especially good with the kids. Food was well cooked, tasted fresh with decent portion sizes and arrived fairly quickly. Pricing is reasonable for the location in a national park.

Having had a pretty awful experience at the Whitworth terrace cafe I came here with my parents for lunch. We had toasted sandwiches which were well made, tasty and well presented with a lovely crunchy salad. The staff were friendly and attentive. I would recommend this cafe to anyone.

Lovely place. People pleasant enough. Ordered some food. Should have taken 20 mins tops. Over an hour later still not had food. It was just a steak sandwich, which it said came with onion chutney. Crispy piece of steak with a few fried onions. Cold chips and onion rings that were sitting in oil. A couple that came in about 45 mins after us received there food first, and that was 2 curry dishes. Was told the steak took longer than the curry????

First of all it is an extremely clean pub / hotel and I agree dogs shouldn't be allowed every where. We have witnessed dogs sitting at tables in other pubs ..not in Bakewell. But we called in early doors last evening for a quick drink whilst waiting for the bus. Crikey talk about a frosty. . reception ...not from the young lady greeter but from the bar staff...we were told to sit in the back of the pub if we were only drinking..it was soulless . Not somewhere I would consider eating. Came back to Baslow for a lovely greeting.

Ive reviewed this place before as its our go to. We have been many times. We just got back from one night stay in the annex where we usually stay. We have never had any issues before but last night was a bit disappointing. The bathroom needs cleaning properly. The tiles and the drip bar under the shower door was terrible. The bath panel had been broken and not repaired and the bottom of the bathroom door was broken so we couldn't close it. There was dust on the headboard too. Late last night as we were tucked up in bed, the fire alarms went off so we shuffled outside in pjs and coats. No staff around. We went to Reception and ended up in the bar. No explanation really so that was a bit unnerving. This is our go to and i really want them to get standards back up. I dont want to start trying to find alternative places to stay but if it doesn't improve then we may have to next time.
