The food here is amazing, we have had breakfast and dinner. There is a wide selection of delicious breakfast options, and our dinner last night was the best meal we've had in a long time! Our compliments to the chef!

This restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a homey feel. You relax in the sitting room with a pre dinner drink and review the menu. The menu has beautifully prepared and presented meals, but it is a limited menu, on the evening we dined there was a choice of 3 mains. Good selection of wines all well priced. Attentive service

I popped in here to see if I could get three takeaway coffees before a family walk. I wish I hadn't bothered, the reception I received from the jumped up receptionist man was appaling. It cost over £11 for three small coffees and I honestly felt this man felt it was beneath him to make them. I can only hope paying guests are treated better!

We were extremely surprised at the great quality and style of the food for which the hotel charged very sensible prices.

Booked afternoon tea but 1 of party was ill and the hotel accommodated us by preparing everything as a takeaway. A fab selection of sandwiches, savouries and cake plus the best scones we've had in a long, long time. The team couldn't have been more helpful and went the extra mile for us today.

fine dining so small portions but beautifully cooked and three courses should fill anyone up - we only managed two!

Popped in while passing with 3 children. Restaurant was showing on the 'Eat Out to Help Out' website as participating in the scheme - offering 50% off per diner, up to the value of £10 pp. Our lunch was ok (not great). Bread stale in sandwiches. Tiny portion of jam for cream tea. Was surprised when we came to pay as was told that the owners had changed their mind about participating in the scheme and we would have to pay full price. I explained that their business was advertised on the Government website. There was an easy solution for the hotel, but they flatly refused. I do hope they aren't claiming back 50% of our order from HMRC, but who knows???

Wonderful food. We had a wood pigeon starter I could have eaten over and over - delicious. The wine is lovely, main meals terrific & the cheese board had 4 or 5 cheeses & they were all lovely. All social distancing etc very well done

Driving by on many occasions, we finally had the chance to visit. What a disappointment! The outside is much nicer than the inside and the serving staff far better than the food. e.g. Served new potatoes instead of sautéed potatoes and seasonal veg to accompany main course, no sign of it!

Both my wife and myself drive past here pretty regularly and we had both talked about going in for something to eat as from the road it looks stunning, located as it is next to the picturesque River Teign on the edge of Dartmoor. We went for Sunday lunch, the waiting staff were very pleasant. Unlike the outside the inside doesn’t really have the style that may be expected.....I think I would call the look “nursing home chic” in addition the food was bloody awful! Never mind.

We visited on a Saturday night for the Gourmet menu and was not disappointed. The service was very good from start to finish. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere and ambiance and the food was absolutely wonderful. Each course was very nice, it was only a shame we had to drive, otherwise we would have had the wine flight to accompany. Highly recommended and wil return when the season changes to have the next menu! Thank you.

Lovely position. Clean. Nicely laundered sheets. Fab breakfast freshly cooked with locally sourced ingredients. Buffet of cereals, yoghurt, juices etc. All for under £100 on the edge of Dartmoor and pet friendly. We had reserved Bovey Castle but for great value for money wished we had booked a second night here. The people also care. Great hospitality.

Good and varied menu with thoughtful wine list. Service very good for dinner, but could have been better at breakfast - apparently we sat down at a particularly busy time that morning.. Delicious breakfast however... Some tables outside the main restaurant allow dogs.

We stayed 3 nights and ate different dinners each night. All of the food was excellent, really well prepared and presented, difficult to fault. There is a reasonable and reasonably-priced wine list. We also had cream tea once and the scones were as good as any we remember having.

Got married here, so obviously like the place! Upon arriving it's clear to see that some money has been spent on furnishing improvements. Tea's came out with lovely fudge pieces. Will have to visit again soon.

Staying in a local cottage for a family get away (3 generations, 2 dogs), we were looking for somewhere to go out for lunch. After researching online for dog friendly places we were not disappointed. On a lovely summers day mid week, we went for lunch and sat in their gorgeous front garden. They don't have an extensive menu but what they do have is all delicious, fresh and well presented. The staff were kind and attentive and we liked it so much we went back a couple of days later. We enjoyed a variety of fresh tasty soups & sandwiches and fresh lemonade. I could write a whole wonderful review about their cream teas. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area to stop in for lunch even if you're not staying there.

Purchased voucher for 3 course lunch for my parents for a Christmas present. Was told they could use it any time when I purchased it. Today was a very special anniversary and they decided to use it for their celebration meal. They booked well in advance and explained they had a voucher. When they got their today to their extreme disappointment they were greeted with the fact they don't do lunches. It was a huge effort for them to get their due to ill health and it completely ruined their special day. They were offered a refund and the chance of an evening meal but none of this will make up for their day being ruined. So disappointed that my Christmas present and their anniversary were a complete disaster. They were told voucher numbers weren't checked. Not sure how I can make it up to them now!

Really good reception. Professional and friendly service . Fairly short but well-balanced menu using local ingredients. Sensible portions, unlike many "fine dining" restaurants. The comprehensive wine list is sensibly priced. Looking forward to my next visit

Visited for lunch as a couple using a Travel Zoo voucher which was an offer of a 2 course lunch for 2 people at £29. We were greeted warmly and the lounge area and restaurant were decorated tastefully. The starters were incredibly small and we wished we had had some accompanying bread (an additional £2.50). So we were looking forward to the main course and had both ordered braised leg of lamb served with root vegetables and pan gravy. The mains were again very small with one slice of lamb in a brown mush which was the gravy and vegetables mixed together. There were no potatoes (maybe a few bits in the mush) nor green vegetables . The lunch menu we chose from is their normal menu for which they charge £18.95 per head for 2 courses. Lovely surroundings, beautiful Dartmoor countryside but very poor quality food and poor value for money. We have bought many Travel Zoo deals of this type but this has been our worst experience. Such a shame as it could have been so nice.

We stayed here in a Friday and Saturday night and found it to be excellent. Room (‘West Okement’) was spacious and had a comfortable sofa. Water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits all provided in the room. There was a cosy lounge to sit in in the evenings for a pre dinner drink. Our deal included a taster menu on the first night which was thoroughly enjoyable - we ate off the menu the second night and food was equally as good. Really good choice at breakfast I can recommend the apricots with honey and orange. The staff were all friendly and attentive but particular praise to the waiters. On top of that you are in the heart of beautiful Dartmoor. Very enjoyable and chilled weekend.

Our room suite was lacking any coordination with mismatched curtains. The shower soaked everything including my PJs and the shower door was difficult to negotiate. The food was ok but nothing special. Overpriced accommodation I am afraid. We left disappointed. Lovely friendly staff however.

"Sunday roasts not exceptional but other mains well cooked. Personal waiter was very good but head waiter left us some time before orders were taken and Manager/owner was very aggressive when we queried children’s portion price on minimalist bill. If taking a child get a full portion to supplement your own. Feels that there has been a change in ownership but setting still idyllic. Wont return but will enjoy the location from the other side of the river."

Stopped for lunch after walking from Lustleigh with a friend on Tuesday 26/3. She had a tasty baguette and I had the most delicious cheesy chips. The service was great, the atmosphere was warm and cosy and the waitress was so welcoming. The cakes looked amazing too. We're planning a return visit soon

We stayed here for two nights on the “2 nights for 1” deal and would gladly do so again if offered. The reviewer who said the place was a bit sad must be able to afford more luxurious places than us as we found it well maintained and the reviewer who said it could be cleaner is obviously living on a different planet! Apart from the receptionist who had only been there 2 weeks, the staff were welcoming and efficient. It was only the chef on duty in the kitchen on the first night that needs talking to: the starter took long enough to come, but the main course took so long that the lady on the bar had the good sense to offer complimentary drinks. And when my sausage & mash came it was swamped in gravy - why not in a boat I wonder! I was looking forward to sea bass but this was off the nexus that night. The banoffee pie was so outstanding, that I had it again on night 2! But why not serve it without cream when asked to? The prawn starter was good enough, but the Canon of lamb main course was to die for! I think 4 choices for both starter & dessert, and 5 mains, is a bit limiting. Room 1 was dog-friendly and had the most stupendous views out of the window - which opened properly to aerate the room. The bed was comfortable - even for me - and there was both wardrobe and 12 drawers. The TV was enormous and well positioned for bedtime viewing. The bath was pleasantly deep but sadly rather wide and so took an age to fill. The expelair was weak which made the bathroom rather stuffy. There was a 12” electric fan in the wardrobe and an extra blanket as the windows are single glazed. The grounds are beautifully kept and dog-friendly with a poo bin. The cooked breakfast on both mornings was excellent. Both fried & poached eggs were expertly done and it was nice to have a coffee machine so that you could choose what you fancy on the day. Sadly no grapefruit juice; just apple & orange. But the best thing was the dish of bacon & sausage for the dog! As many reviewers say, the drive needs resurfacing and the hotel needs to bite the bullet and have it done. Turning left at the lane is also not to be recommended but there is not a road to be seen from the hotel! The hotel is so quiet! Room 1 is above Reception but we never heard the comings & goings of residents. Dogs are neither allowed in the restaurant nor the breakfast room, but there is a large table on one side of the bar and 3 tables on the other side suitable. I would recommend this hotel whether you have a dog or not.
