Went in last night as a last minute booking of 6 and we all had a wonderful time. There were a few hiccups with things being out of stock and a printer issue led to a few of us waiting a bit longer than usual to get our food but the staff were incredibly kind and kept us updated. We were sad to hear that the restaurant may be closing as a lot of us in the group have fond memories of the place and it remains the favourite restaurant of my partner and I. I've yet to find a place that does a better chicken katsu curry. This place is wonderful and I hope it remains open it's absolutely worth it I've never had bad service in here

Went in for a catch up with a friend for a late lunch, we had booked a table in advance. My friend arrived first and was sat at the nicer table by the window but was asked after 5 minutes to move to a simple table so a couple could have that one which I find extremely unprofessional. Only us and one other table were inside. The atmosphere was nonexistent, so quiet inside that we felt like everyone could hear us speaking to each other, no music playing or anything. We were just saying our hellos, before being able to look at any menus at all we were quickly asked for our drinks order. We asked the waitress if she could come back in a little bit. Only a minute later another waitress had came up and asked if we’d like to order food? We hadn’t even ordered drinks let alone looked at the food options. Because of this we just ordered lemonades since we hadn’t had a chance to choose a cocktail from their menu. Again, only a minute after we were asked by the first server for our food order and just ordered a couple things without being able to properly look over the menu. Our food came out quite quickly and was roasting hot, looked very appealing. However the chicken karaage tasted so off we didn’t even finish half of it between us. The katsu curry had a very strange taste yet was so flavourless at the same time. The rice was so stodgy. I was rather ill after we left. Despite the waitresses being very eager to get our orders in, no one came to the table to see if we needed new drinks or anything. The waitresses were very lovely but seemed absolutely miserable. Afterwards we were thinking of getting dessert to find out that they only had two flavours of ice cream available and nothing else. We felt pretty rushed despite the restaurant being dead, not a great atmosphere especially when the staff seem very unhappy in their jobs. Overall I think this restaurant has potential, especially given how nice it looks but a restaurant can’t just look nice. New management is needed asap and will be the only way to “save mikaku”. Treat your staff better, use quality food, get a bit of music on and teach basic food hygiene, I didn’t plan on spending hours on the toilet after a simple lunch 👍👍

Definitely you have to get some professional stuff. Went there to have lunch, the restaurant was almost empty. The lady at the reception was too busy with her cellphone to be able to accommodate a seat. She wanted to give me a seat at the bar when the restaurant was almost empty. Never again here.!!!

#30daystosaveMikaku. We came here for lunch today after reading that, there may be an unfortunate chance Mikaku will be closing due to the cost of living issues. Mikaku is a great family based restaurant as it has the kids softplay in the back, which sets it apart from other family friendly restaurants as there is a safe place for children to play within the establishment and keep them entertained during your visit. We arrived for our booking early and were able to be seated right away, Our server Amy was lovely not over baring and let us take our time to settle in before asking us if we were ready to order. Our order was very quick in coming out, about 5-10 minutes after we had ordered, the food (cauliflower karaage, chicken Gyoza) when it arrived was luke warm considering how quickly it came out of the kitchen and if it hadn't been for the sauces unfortunately it would have been really bland with a few tweaks this could be rectified, although the cucumber salad was rich in flavour. On previous visits and trying the ramen bowls these were rich in flavour. The kids bento box was very similar although more flavourful, it was also Luke warm. All in all we spent less than £25 which is a reasonable price with them offering 20% off food and drink over the 30 days. For families looking to relax while out with children I would recommend giving this place a try if you are looking for something to suit the kids needs. If closed it will be a great lose for family focused restaurants in Glasgow. Staff are lovely as they do not hover over you a lot during the meal which is something I enjoy and are easy to attract should you need their attention for something. Hopefully there will be opportunity to return in the future.

Service right from the moment we walked in was excellent. Staff were attentive and always smiling, always ready to help and nothing was too much. The food was unbelievable, gyoza's were well cooked and very tasty. Wings were crispy and the sauce was delicious. Main meals, rice was perfect, roast pork was juicy and succulent and the sauce was to die for. Excellent selection of drinks and sake options really opened up the meal. I cannot wait to go back. I and my wife loved it. Gave a 40% on the bill as we were that happy. They even allowed me to offer our unfinished Sake bottle to a lovely couple of girls sitting near by, I hope they had as good a time as we did.

Went for their princess mononoke screening and ‘inspired’ meal, came out laughing to myself. Was a really nice idea and appreciate they were trying something new but it was all so gimmicky. First of all, they sat us in possibly the worst spot in the house, basically parallel to the screen. Low-hanging lightbulbs completely obscured what little view we had. When my partner politely mentioned it to the waiters they told us they were turning off the lights but didn’t really seem to care, no one checked with us if we could see any better or anything. We quite literally had to get the movie out on our phone and watch it on netflix. None of the staff seemed to notice nor care. Drink and dessert were nice but the main meal was so disappointing. What was meant to be congee was cold, soggy rice in a ‘broth’ that tasted of nothing but water. Appreciated the steak on top which was a nice touch but all my friends have reassured me that congee shouldn’t taste of nothing… mind you this was £30 a head. All the service staff looked like they didn’t want to be there and had to force smiles when serving. I know how hard customer service can be and i empathise with having bad days at work believe me! However, they did sell us a whole movie experience which we paid for and yet it felt like we had to tiptoe around them. Mikaku, if you’re gonna put any more of these on you need to seriously rethink the seating plan and make sure you can cater towards this kind of event.

In summary I would not go back and there are better alternatives in the surrounding area. I don’t like leaving negative reviews however after our trip to Mikaku I can honestly say I would not recommend. The restaurant looks nice but the music and food let it down. We booked for a birthday meal and left disappointed. We like to try a new restaurant for special occasions as a treat and this meal missed the mark at almost every point. We ordered the fries wings and gyoza and all seemed unauthentic. I ordered the Pork Tonkotsu Ramen and it was incredibly bland the soft boiled egg was over and the pork was also not seasoned at all. I’ve had better instant ramen. My partner ordered the ebi Don and it had hardly any vegetables and was only redeemed by the yuzu aoli. On the menu the Sando is marked as taking a break but this is printed to clearly a long term menu change and the Robatayaki was unavailable. The servers were quite slow there seemed quite a wait between sitting down and ordering and we waited an about 20 minutes from requesting the bill to returning with the card machine.

I went in on a Friday night at around 6:30ish. It took our waitress 15 minutes to even talk to us, and when she did she seemed like she didn’t want to be there. It was like everything we said was an inconvenience to her. However, there was an abundance of staff working that night, all congregating around the back door (which we were seated next to and was very cold and unpleasant to sit next to). The food was ok, but my partners food came out 4 minutes after ordering (a ramen) and mine 10 minutes later (cold char sui pork and rice bowl). This was not communicated to us, if the smallest recognition that dishes would come as and when they are ready that would’ve been great, but alas our waitress didn’t say anything. No check back on the table, nothing. Just a circle of waitresses talking very loudly amongst themselves. Having been to mikaku previously and loved it, I am very disappointed in the lack of service we received. We will probably never be back, and would much rather spend our money elsewhere. However there was one waitress who was somewhat an ok waitress but the very poor attitude from everyone else really did dampen the evening.

Service all but one girl was terrible, any request was met with a sigh and it was hard to get their attention despite there being a lot of staff around. My ramen arrived cold and my partners food arrived 20 minutes after mine. I asked to have my food heated up which was done but only after the waitress complained that it would have to be remade all over again. What’s more the rest of evening and day after I suffered from food poisoning :’) don’t go to this place.

This place is a complete disaster—avoid it at all costs. The food is overpriced and underwhelming, with a so-called £16 Wagyu beef portion barely weighing 30 grams. To make matters worse, they cook it however they please without even asking your preference. The staff is just as chaotic. We walked in without a reservation, and they seated us—only to tell us after we had finished eating and were enjoying our drinks that our table was actually reserved and we had to leave. That’s not our problem; it’s their mismanagement. Bottom line? The food doesn’t taste half as good as it looks, and the service is a joke. Save your time and money—go somewhere else.

Went into Mikaku hoping for a sando, but they’re off the menu until their new place opens by the Clyde 🥲 So instead, I went for: 🍜Pork Tonkotsu Ramen, £14.50, – A solid, warming bowl. The pork slices were tender, the egg was done just right and the noodles had a good chew. The mushrooms let it down a little - just not my thing and they were a little slimey in the bowl. Would’ve loved some chilli oil or flakes for extra heat, but overall, a very good ramen. 🥟Chicken Gyoza, £6, – Good filling and a tasty dipping sauce, but they could have been a little crispier on the bottom. 🍗Chicken Karaage, £8 – Crisp and golden with a lovely crunch, though not quite as juicy as I remembered. The dipping sauces were good, adding extra flavour and were needed to moisten it up. Follow me on insta for more reviews: @Lewishere_lewisthere

I love this restaurant. The menu is just the right size. I love that the ramen has a half portion size. My favourite dish is the Aki-Oni demon ramon. My son is a big fan of this and never leaves anything on his plate (box). Overall, great food at a very reasonable price.

Waited 20 minutes to order, when we ordered got told the chef who did the grilling wasn't in that day so that side of the menu was completely off. Why not tell us that when we sat down so we didn't spend those (long) 20 minutes discussing food options that weren't available? Food arrived and was quite tasty, but adults came before children's (complete pet peeve). Given dessert menu, waited a long time to order... same thing happened went to order something to be told it wasn't available. How hard is it to say something isn't available when you pass a menu to a customer? When desserts eventually arrived got told we had to vacate our table in 10 minutes. We were planning on having a cocktail to celebrate birthday but ended up being rushed. The soft play was quite good for the toddlers to run around in, the service let the day down, food was good when it arrived but pity half the menu was off for the day!

Booked here for dinner - the food here was lovely, served promptly and well presented. One of my friends had an issue with her food (absolutely nothing to do with the restaurant, she’s just quite picky) and it was taken off the bill as a kind gesture. Our server was great and very attentive. We were sat in a private area/booth and the table beside us seemed to be two members of staff having a meeting or doing some paperwork, usually I wouldn’t be bothered at all by this, however we felt a bit awkward and uncomfortable as we didn’t want to bother them by being too loud etc as they were right beside us. Totally understand that these things need to happen however it wasn’t the atmosphere we expected for it being 8pm.

Honestly one of the best places I've been to eat in the city in ages. Foods fantastic, the atmosphere is very inviting and friendly, the artwork and attention to detail is incredible in everything they do, it's reasonably priced you could make a meal and drink here fit a budget of £20pp easily. Kids options are pretty varied, but there's still a nice safe food option if your kiddos struggle to try new foods. One of the best things about the whole place as a parent is there's a softplay a safe space for little kids to go play while you eat. 👏 makes all the difference in the world to eating out especially in the city centre! Me hizo sentir bastante incómodo.

Lovely inviting restaurant, casual with lots of different types of seating and could not stop looking around at the decor. Half portion ramen bowls are perfect as needed to try the charcoal grill items, which were superb. Waiting staff were all so lovely, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive.

Fantastic place to eat, with reasonable prices and fast, friendly service! Really enjoyed my dinner here. I was told the kitchen closes at 9pm (I came in 5 minutes before and was able to place an order), so be warned if you're looking for a late dinner.

I recently visited Maikaku on Queen Street, Glasgow, for a lunchtime meal, and I was thoroughly impressed. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive throughout my visit. The service was prompt, and the team went out of their way to ensure a pleasant dining experience. The lunchtime menu offered excellent value for money, with generous portions and high-quality dishes that exceeded my expectations. Whether you're in the mood for katsu curry or ramen dishes, there's something for everyone. Overall, Maikaku is a gem in the city centre, and I will definitely be returning soon!

My husband and I "stumbled over" this lovely Japanese restaurant. We both ordered chicken breast katsu. The food was served after just a few minutes, and it was just as delicious as it looked. What is even more amazing is that it tasted just as delicious as when I had the same dish in Kyoto, Japan! The staff is so friendly and everything was clean and tidy, and beautifully designed. The prices are fair, and the amount of food was just right. Loved everything about this very authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Glasgow.

Loved the veggie ramen! Super cute place and portions are massive! If you get the full-sized ramen then don’t bother with sides.

The place has the atmosphere of a Japanese district, which is especially impressive in the evening. Unfortunately, I wouldn't add the ramen offered by the restaurant to my list of favorites. Currently, even wagamama offers better taste. The broth was practically colored water and the amount of ingredients was slightly disappointing. The price of the food seems to be adequate to its content.

Dropped in, without a reservation, on a Saturday afternoon. The place was busy but they did shuffle things about so we could get a seat. Food was delicious…pickles, cucumber salad, chicken karaage, pork gyozas, and as recommended by our very friendly server, the king prawn and beef fillet from the robatayaki. Portion sizes were great - we were sharing 6 plates between two and it worked really well. Another review mentioned it was hard to get staff’s attention and I would agree with that, but they were all busy and we didn’t wait long at all. Everything was fresh and full of flavour. Would recommend.

Don’t. Just don’t! there’s a better spot just in front of it. The service was the worst. The food? Even worse, got a bowl of rice with no flavour with boiled beef used to make broth that was chewy and 0 flavour. But it’s got the vibe.

Had heard great things but unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype at all. Every single dish we received was cold. All together everything was so bland despite lots of sauce. I think the descriptions on the menu could have been better too...some things were huge portions and others tiny yet more expensive. Won't be going back in a hurry, so dissapointed.

We visited Mikaku on our last evening in Scotland with our two kids (4 and 8 years old). The restaurant is amazing, the food was delicious, the service and staff were outstanding andthe ambient looked gorgeous and its even has a special area especially for kids in the back, with a small indoor playground. I absolutely recommend this restaurant to be visited with families, however when it comes to the food for the kids make sure to find something not too spicy, or you could ask the staff to adjust. All of the food and drinks we ordered was absolutely delicious, the only thing i could imagine for improvement would be to add more vegetarian options. If we ever come back to Glasgow, we will definetly visit again. If you ever plan to go, maie sure to make a reservation, since it will be full.

My friend and I visited after seeing the reviews were becoming mixed for this place. We had previously ate at Mikaku maybe a year or two before and had a great experience. Sadly, the reviews were right. I couldn't believe how this place had slipped in quality and experience. We were disappointed the robatayaki section was off but we understood that could happen. I had; steamed gyozas, chicken karaage and the sando ebi katsu. The chicken karaage was similar to the pork katsu where all the batter fell off and it just felt like big lumps of greasy chicken. I would suggest lessoning the portion size, batter and adding some more spices to the batter. The steamed gyozas were good despite mine being fried on the bottom which I felt was strange. The biggest disappointment was the sando ebi katsu. I knew it could be a risk as I had an amazing shrimp sandwich in Japan. This didn't live up to it, the sandwich lacked so much flavour all you could taste was the cucumber. The sauce and salty coleslaw provided didn't help the flavour. The one in Japan had a creamy sweet coleslaw in the sandwich with a flavoured omelette, the shrimp also wasn't formed into a patty. The service was mixed, our waiter was great and did their job well but we found it hard to get their attention at times as they were at the other end of the restaurant. For the sake, we really missed the trio sample sakes we got last time. They were perfect for a drink we didn't know much about and really added to the experience last time. I really hope this place picks up again as I've had a few really good nights with good food and sake. The movie and meal idea is really inventive but this experience has put me off wanting to go for now.

Food is just awful. Ordered 2 half portions of ramen, the tonkotsu was utterly tasteless and the one my friend ordered was just pure garlic (not in a good way). Service was meh, hard to get staffs attention to ask for the bill, despite watching them all standing chatting at the back. Legit have made better instant noodles at home. Shame, because the decor is very nice.

The wife and i visited here over the weekend for the Mrs birthday as she was wanting to try this place for quite some time. The decor of the place as you walk in is really cool and vibrant. The staff on hand were very attentive all throughout our dinner and good at explaining all the different options. We ordered a bowl of Furikake Fries, Chicken Karaage, Sweet Soy and Sesame Wings along with a bowl of Ramen noodles each. All the food was lovely although i didn't really like the Ramen Noodles but that was me trying something different so i will stick to the Katsu Curry next time but the rest of the meal was delicious. The cocktails were a bit on the expensive side but they packed a punch so again we have no complaints. It was the first Japanese restaurant i have been in and i would definitely go back as it was an enjoyable experience.

I went to Mikaku for their Spirited Away movie event with my partner and we had a fabulous time! Tickets were £30 pp and included a 5 course dinner while watching the movie plus a welcome cocktail. The food was delicious and the drink was absolutely out of this world. There were a couple things that could’ve been done more smoothly, for example there were some audio issues at the beginning of the movie and the first course was served wayyyy before the others, but overall it was a very fun night and I would definitely come back!

One male staff with a beard clearly ignored my call to our table, and kept chatting to his friend or another customer. We did not get the kids dessert we ordered. Most of the food seemed like it was instant and not fresh and did not taste authentically Japanese (I live in Japan).

I had a fantastic experience at Mikaku. The ramen was the best (we ordered 2 ramen with half portions and they were enough for both of us), and the chicken karaage was equally impressive. The dumplings were also super good. The service was quick, the staff were friendly, and the decor was both attractive and super cute. Very affordable place to have good food, in both quality and quantity. Highly recommended.

Think it’s more of a basic student place, not good for Japanese food. Service was terrible, had to keep trying to get any of the staffs attention to order and then our food turned up with no cutlery, 10 mins later finally got some. My partners ramen was fine but my chicken was greasier than a kfc ! The other meat was raw and inedible, also greasy. We initially waited for service after coming in for 10 mins and should’ve been the sign to walk out and I wish we did and saved our money on food we could eat. Avoid at all costs !

Bad service, tasteless food....what's happened to such a great wee place. In today to treat 13 year old and service, food and everything about the meal was a disappointment . Not sure why it's gone from being top class with delicious food but even the staff were pretty rude, just plonking average food down. Visited in July '24 for lunch. Spotted this restaurant during a walk about the city centre. The internal décor is eye catching and looks inviting. However, we were quite disappointed with the cuisine. The food looks appealing based on the photos by the door however we found the Katsu curry to not contain vegetables, packed with spring onions. We made the mistake of ordering Mint Soda & that left it much to be desired. Their bathroom was clean however their water taps were boiling, it was steaming at one point which isn't great for hand hygiene. The servers were pleasant and friendly and they were knowledgeable with what they had in stock as some meals were unavailable. Couples or 2 diners are usually seated at 'the bar' which was ok given the theme; but wouldn't be rushing to this establishment for Japanese food.

I was taking a picture of the name of the restaurant on the door so I would remember because my memory is not what it used to be. When suddenly this woman with curly gray hair, starts yelling at me angrily why are you taking a picture? Totally blew my vibe. Still shaking a little bit as I write this. I will definitely not go there. They lost a customer just by the way she treated me . Very angry person and if that’s any indication of how they treat prospective customers. I don’t need to be treated that way. Do yourself a favor and stay away. Sheesh!

I was there with my daughter (10 yo). The food was delicious, less expensive than thought, considering the portion sizes. You can try several things of smaller portions here without getting too full. Also the children's menu is quite big, so it is rather for teens or to share. The service was really nice 👍, I really enjoyed our spontaneous visit there.

Booked a table for office Xmas night out, place was messy, table next to us was full of empty drinks glass which continued to be placed there, dangerous if anyone had bumped into. Lack of staff so waited ages for a drink, ended up going to bar downstairs to buy one while we waited on our order. Drinks mediocre, ice tasted off. Not the staffs fault there wasn't more of them, over priced and lacking in atmosphere. Went elsewhere.

Enjoyed the food, However, when calling back to discuss being overcharged. I was told The automatically add a service charge , I simply questioned if this was normal for Two people. I then got a long story about someone washing the dishes people preparing my food, making me drinks. (To me, this is just running a restaurant ) The person on the phone was then trying to guilt trip me asking if I wanted my money back I can come in and they can take it out of the tip jar. Kept asking me questions on the phone to simply talk over me . When asking for person’s name, she hung up on me .
