A hidden gem in Edinburgh!!! This restaurant was a superb find, excellent food with great helpful staff. Really great ambience and decor. The food was really outstanding and you can tell the chef takes pride and cooks with love for the customers who visit. Fantastic value for Money! Michael’s was a hit and if you visit this city, this restaurant is sure to delight.

We live in Edinburgh, no stranger to many good restaurants but this was exceptional! . Superb quality, flavours and unbelievable value for money vs. Some of the “city venues”! Service was friendly. Absolutely recommend, we’ll be back.

I feel compelled to write this review in response to the comments of Angela Fotheringham and Alan M (both dated 6 July). I really do not want to enter into a slanging match with either of these individuals but neither review reflects my experience of eating at Michael Neaves over the last 6 years. In fact, I had lunch at Michael’s on both Saturday, 1 July and Sunday, 2 July (when I suspect at least one of those complaining sat opposite our table !!). In my opinion the quality of food and value is unrivalled in Edinburgh. How Michael continues to offer up this quality of food over 3 courses for £17.50 is beyond me. Unlike other restaurants across Edinburgh (and across the UK); Michael has not increased the cost of the 3 course lunch since well before the start of the pandemic (for those of you with a memory good enough to remember how long ago that is now). In addition, the wine has not increased by more than a pound or two a bottle either, inspite of the changes to the rate of duty. Incredible in these inflationary times. Meagre portions, bland food - I beg to differ. On both my recent visits I had the duck starter which was stunning and the main course of cod (on the Saturday) and the chicken (on the Sunday) were just as good. It may be true that in these times he has to rely on casual staff for restaurant service but that is the case in any cafe, restaurant or hotel these days. Michael chooses his staff well and he trains them well - they are always friendly and never unprofessional. If the views expressed in the two negative reviews are objective and honest then so be it but I would ask anyone thinking of visiting to concentrate on the overwhelming number of positive experiences in the other reviews. I am truly sorry if they didn’t enjoy the meal or the service but in 6 years that has never been my experience. If this review comes across as someone who is ‘ a fan’ of Michael’s then I make no apology; I and my partner are. We wish Michael Neaves well and I would rather head there to eat over any other establishment in Edinburgh. David Schumm

Had the most amazing meal! Staff were so welcoming & friendly. Service impeccable. Ambiance delightful The homemade bread & artisan butter was a delicious indicator for the rest of the meal. A duck and orange salad starter titillated my tastebuds - followed by pork loin with the smoothest carrot purée & mash potato (I declined the savoy cabbage!) Have booked for a return visit!! Birthday lunch with my sisters. The service was glacial. Ordered at 1.20, the starters arrived 40 minutes later. Value for money, yes if you are on a diet. The portions, though tasty, were miserable. We asked for the bill and 15 minutes later the waitress arrived with the card machine…what no bill? Oh aye, and my coffee was cold. Maybe they were having a bad day but I won’t be returning.

If it were not for the company, the rating would have been lower. Sweet staff but incredibly slow disjointed service. Portions were meagre, I am not a huge eater but I did go home and cook a light meal 4 hours later. Mackerel dish was, quite frankly average, the chicken on couscous, tasty couscous... chicken dry and bland. Felt disinclined to try a dessert. Small intimate space and like I said, lovely staff....

We tried Michael’s three course lunch menu and we really enjoyed overall. The dishes were tasty, very fairly priced and service was attentive and smiley. For the location of the restaurant and the food they serve, £17.50 for three courses was quite the steal! One let down was the rhubarb ‘parfait’ dessert. It was refreshing and tasted nice, but it definitely wasn’t a parfait, more just like ice cream. Great visit overall, and as I say, you can’t grumble for £17.50!

We booked this for an Edinburgh Saturday overnighter because the Tripadvisor reviews were so good. Indeed we could only get an early table so were encouraged that this was a popular place, however there was only one other couple in when we arrived and another two when we left. Throughout the evening we were served by enthusiastic and attentive young servers who were great. The food we received was very good however the new potatoes were missing from my main course (Monkfish) and the haggis from my starter (scallops). Both were delicious and I didn't notice the missing ingredients until we received the dessert menu's and I rechecked the starters/mains. Mentioned to server (remember these guys are young, really nice, possibly students) who said he'd inform the chef. Well, I can only assume the chef (who I learned was not Michael) was a forceful character as these people often are and the server rather sheepishly told me the chef said he hadn't missed them. I only replied 'well he has missed them' and with no further instruction to the young man so as not to put him under undue pressure, honestly it was a mistake and one not to be unduly pursued. However! he must have fed back to Michael and the Monkfish dish was removed from the bill. So well done Michael and his servers but there could be a rogue chef in there so check your menu vs plate!

First visit to Michael’s and we’ll certainly be back. Our tasty lunch was beautifully presented and served by friendly and attentive staff. This restaurant is a true gem!

I can’t rate this restaurant highly enough. Had one of the best meals ever. The quality of ingredients, their cooking and presentation were superb. Worthy of anything you see on cooking competitions on TV. Everything was freshly prepared and cooked so don’t expect fast food, but this was one of the reasons that the food was so delicious. The service was very good also. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

First visit to this restaurant although we did eat at Michael's restaurant and whisky bar, now closed. Food was amazing and the staff very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended and we will be booking again when we're in Edinburgh

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars but just couldn't as I was pretty disappointed with all the changes to the menu. I prefer to eat vegetarian when out so I had booked here based on the menu and was looking forward to the asparagus starter and the sweet potato main. When we were given our menus on the night, neither of these were on it. There was a goats cheese creme brulee starter and celariac main in their places. The haddock main dish was also served differently with creamed leaks and a potato rosti type base instead of a squid ink risotto and the chicken main was also replaced by something completly different. I avoid red meat so didn't notice if there were any changes to those dishes. I understand and appreciate there may be changes in the dishes to ensure fresh available produce on the day, but I feel a good touch would be to let diners know before coming to their reservation that such big changes to the menu had occured. The menu here is really small so all these big changes made a difference. Anyway, we had the creme brulee starter which was beautifully presented and was lovely, along with the scallops which were absolutely delicious (although the haggis croquette had also been replaced with just some pancetta). For mains, not liking celariac, we had the bouillabasse and the spiced haddock, both were enjoyed immensely. We opted for the chocolate and rasperry mi-cuit for desert which was heavenly - shame we only shared one between us! Overall, I cannot fault this place for its nice food and the staff were lovely, friendly and attentive. I will just be reluctatant to book again and risk what you see online not being a true reflection of what is actually offered.

This is a hidden jewel in Edinburgh. Food was delicious and staff was incredibly nice. It is also very affordable. I would recommend 100%.

What a find. Exceptional food and great service. If we were staying longer in Edinburgh we’d definitely be back as this was the finest meal we’ve had during our stay.

Was a little while ago I came here with the better half but I have been meaning to leave a review. We had some of the best food we have ever had right here at Michael’s. Starter, main and desert were all fantastic. Even the bread and homemade butter was perfect. The service and atmosphere were also great and this is a place I highly recommend to people when they travel up to Edinburgh. Scallops and black pudding to start, beef Wellington main and a blood orange cheese cake. I’ve also added photos of the other half’s food however I am unsure what her dishes she had. All in all fantastic food, reasonably priced, would recommend

This is a great find in Edinburgh, a little further out , but so worth a visit. The food was amazing, delicious and freshly made. Service was also excellent and a good selection of wines. I really hope this restaurant stays here so I can visit again when I visit Edinburgh again.

This is what a local restaurant should be. We've been here a couple of times before for lunch, but today we'd been a bit over-active in the country and needed comfort in the evening. The starters - the scallops, I'm assured, were pure quality. I took croquettes having forgotten that they can be bland. My monkfish main course defied what I think can be done at that price - it tasted excellent and the ingredients were amazing. The venison just attracted cooing noises. We shared an orangey chocolate dessert that was fabulous. Our wine was not the second cheapest and was an excellent Spanish under £30. And we were just utterly relaxed throughout.

Had a fabulous meal of the highest quality...couldn't believe the bill..such good value..they're not charging anywhere near enough!..Will be back soon.

Myself and 2 friends visiting from Ireland for the weekend came across this gem! The atmosphere, staff and food were all just fabulous! Really chilled vibe, we sat for the evening sipping on lovely Rose wine and amazing food! I had scallops for starters and the beef shin wellington for main course....absolutely delicious! Can't wait to return the next time I'm visiting lovely Edinburgh.

Nice greeting when walk in but downhill after that! Terrible service, 30mins before we got our wine, waiter pour it without waiting for us to taste it and it wasn’t the house wine! One hour for starters! Food was very disappointing, best bit was the bread and garlic which we had to ask for, twice!
