Lovely little cafe, with friendly and helpful staff and a great selection of food. It was a perfect place to meet friends from Rome and the Netherlands. Our group ordered a wide variety of choices from the menu including the soup, Scottish breakfast, scrambled eggs and salmon, smoothies, waffles, carrot cake and tea - all delicious. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the owl cushions very comfy. You could miss it walking by, but well worth searching it out and popping in. It extends a way back - a bit of a tardis for seating.

Like the other reviews said, stumbled across this lovely little cafe & it's a gem! Good food, prepared whilst you wait - don't be in a rush & you'll relax right into the lovely atmosphere & chilled vibe (smooth, dinner jazz, with a twist..."Smoke on the Water"?) We had cheese & veggie haggis toasties, our friends had the full Scottish breakfasts...all washed down with lots of tea, served in great mis-matched crockery & a cat-shaped tea pot. Would definitely go back & probably at an earlier time (he opens at 8am!)

Probably the quirkiest place in the capital for breakfast. Small, compact but very comfortable. Everything cooked fresh to order by the same guy who waits on the tables. In fact he does everything. Gid only knows how he has the time to do it all. We ate on a Sunday morning so it was pretty full inside but we didnt mind the wait. I opted for the full Scottish breakfast which was great value. 10 items for under a tenner. My wife opted for porridge with honey and a custom breakfast which allows you to choose 4 breakfast items from the menu, served with toast. The black coffee was served in a mug which was a nice touch. Can't beat a mug of coffee on a Sunday morning. Total bill for 2 breakfasts and 4 coffees came in at under £30. As a footnote, we enjoyed it so much, we went back the next morning.

My fiancé and I happened upon Fatty Owls when searching for places in Edinburgh that serve soup! So so glad we went in. I had the chorizo, manchego and butternut squash soup, he had the mushroom chestnut and thyme and they were both delicious! Perfect to warm us up on a rainy day. The staff were so friendly we easily could have stayed for the rest of the afternoon. Me and my husband visit here almost every time we come to Edinburgh! The first couple of times we went for breakfast which is amazing, I always have their tasty porridge which is delicious and filling! My husband always has the full breakfast which looks amazing! The last time however was a true highlight and I just had to write a review about it. We went past around lunchtime and I noticed the gorgeous sounding soup- chorizo, manchego cheese and butternut squash! We went in and were greeted by a young man who we have seen on previous visits. I am unsure of his name but you sir, are a true credit! The guy was alone and it had clearly been a busy day as other tables are full of dishes. Despite this, we were seated and attended to straight away, with pleasant chit chat. I turned my head and the next minute all the tables were clear and he came over with a huge smile asking if we were ready to order. Lunch was amazing, super delicious but truly the service was amazing. What a polite, hardworking and wonderful staff member you have on your team. We need more people like him in the food industry! Simply put, food and service brilliant and a true credit! Visit this place and you won’t regret it :-)

This place looked lovely and we were really looking forward to eating here. Two days in a row we arrived for breakfast only to find it dark and a sign on the door that said “closed. We will be back tomorrow.” The first day we thought it was a little weird but would try again tomorrow as we had another day in town. So we got up the second morning excited to try it out for breakfast only to get there and see it closed again. We were very disappointed. We had even checked the hours online and everything and got there at 9am and 10am respectfully and found it closed. Be careful when you are planning to eat here as it may not be open.

The waitress (I think also the owner) was exceptionally brilliant and welcoming. We saw her offering food sample to other customers so that they could taste before ordering - who else does that!!! There were 5 of us all vegetarian and we ordered a selection of different dishes to share - food was bang on. Seeing other people order desert did make our mouth water but we had our visit to Edinburgh Castle pending and so had to go. If it would have been open later in the evening, would definitely have gone back for that scrumptious desert. If only all restaurants were like this!

Instead of turning left toward Edinburgh Castle we turned right led by my wives need for breakfast NOW and stumbled across this little gem of cafe. The food was simple good fare at a very reasonable price. I had soft scrambled eggs and Scottish smoked salmon on toast and my wife a sandwich, all of which I know about was muttered in a "yum" between bites. The standout over and above the food and the small but cozy space was the genuinely warm hospitality of staff. On the day we visited, that being this morning, the staff were the owners, one in the kitchen, and Fiona (?) in the front. Before our food came out, not a long wait at all, Fiona sat at a table across from us, providing us with tips and suggestions on our time in Edinburgh, and cluing us in on the happenings of the Fringe that had concluded only a few days earlier. It was a very comfortable and welcome conversation, which I say because typically I feel quite awkward engaging in chat with strangers but not so with Fiona. Even though I gave it a full five which obviously means I recommend it, I want to add, I REALLY recommend you visit Fatty Owl when in Edinburgh and let me just say in advance, you're welcome for the suggestion.

We've been coming to our favourite Edinburgh place since it opened in 2015 and looking back I couldn't believe my only review of it was 7 years ago. Chef Sean continues to innovate and delight in equal measure, as is clear from the proliferation of 5* reviews - don't hesitate to ask anything about the food or the wine, he is rarely happier than when describing the provenance of the cheese or veal.. or the terroir of his new favourite wine... I rarely go for restaurant wine pairings but wouldn't hesitate to recommend the offerings here. You won't be disappointed by the quality, value or attention to detail! I've posted the current menu below - you'll get a copy in your goody-bag when you leave. And I can't leave without mentioning Keith - Sean's brother and head of music production at The Table. The place wouldn't be the same without you, Keith. Look forward to seeing you both again, soon! And next year is the 10th Anniversary! Can't wait for that..

Amazing experience for my birthday. They put us right by the windows so we could overlook the river and bridge. Wine tasting, great food and amazing service (thank you Loreta!). We Calle din last minute after a wonderful day in the Botanical Gardens… we were hungry! Had walked passed the Toll House earlier and though wow this places looks so amazing. What a very memorable experience! Free parking all day Sat and Sunday and after 6:30pm in week days.
