Delicious, Freshly Cooked Food! The food was perfectly cooked, wrapped in traditional paper instead of plastic—fresh, hot, and of outstanding quality. Truly excellent value for money. It’s refreshing to see a chip shop that maintains such high standards, avoiding overpriced options with poor service and low quality. Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for restoring our faith in great Fish and Chips! other chip shops need to learn by this!

Cod tasty, chips really good, price reasonable ~£20 to feed 3 adults and a toddler. Will be coming back again later this week before we head home

I've used this place before and the food has always been okay. However I went in tonight, checked the price list and walked out. Seven pounds for fish is about right but three pounds for a portion of chips is daylight robbery.

This is the second year running coming here and both times I have had fish & chips and both times i had had the runs! The fish had bones in it and looked like it fried twice as the batter was hard around the edges. If you eat here please be close to a toilet!

Daylight robbery. Meant to be an adult portion. My 8 year old boy would finish all that and ask for more.

Went in on Friday evening to order and pay for food for eight people. Took a bit of time to get it, but we left with the order packed in a large paper bag. When we got back to our holiday cottage we found that we were two fish and chips short. The food was fine, but we had to share six portions between eight of us. Since it would have been a half-hour round trip back to the chippy, we couldn't be bothered returning and, since we were leaving the next day, we couldn't call in the next day. I wish people would double check they've given you everything you've ordered (and paid for).

Popped in to get food with my partner as we were passing. I had a chip butty with a sausage in batter and gravy (bisto gravy was a let down) parked up, tucked in and really enjoyed the chips and sausage in batter! Got to my favourite part (butter and gravy soaked roll) to find mould right through! Safe to say I will not be having from there again 🤮

5 steps to gain access.Chips were excellent, most were brown or brownish, great taste and mainly chunky. Chicken prepared in the chip oil, hence crispy skin. Rare to see this these days. The downside was their gravy. I do not expect a professional chippie not to be able to mix gravy granules. Way, way too many undissolved lumps.

Lovely food and friendly service from the staff at The Merrie Fryer; able to ring ahead and order food, and pick up in very reasonable time. Chips were fabulous, and good range of other fittle to add to them. Overall, really pleased and would revisit.

Lovely fluffy chips . Rang through the order to help with COVID restraints. Plenty of choice. Wish could pay by card though. Hardly anywhere insists on cash only these days. Nice choices of fish. My favourite also …..curry sauce.

There isn't a great deal that's merrie (merry) about this local fish & chip shop. The food's OK from a greasy point of view, however the staff really set the scene with their unhappy attitude. I've actually seen merrier people at a funeral, and that's before the wake has started. Complaining that you're busy because it's the school holidays in front of customers is a real sure fire way to please the people who are paying for food!!! Will I be going back.....no!!

Most Fluffy Chips I've had in a while. it is a must for anyone visiting Builth Wells to stop and eat at. Nice and friendly Staff. #servicewithasmile

We were camping in the area and called ahead to order our fish and chips. They were really delicious, and cheaper than at home. Win win.

Excellent food, we had driven up from Bristol to go to a show in Brecon and for our tea drove the extra to get to Builth to get our supper at The Merrie Fryer, well worth it, their food is excellent

Visited here on our first and last day of our holiday.Very impressed with food choices and staff friendlyness.Chips were very tasty and a few options for us vegetarians.Whilst chatting to another customer, we were informed that people travel miles to this chip shop as it is the best in the surrounding area.Only downside, and not the fault of the shop, is the parking. Lay bys are busy and we had to do a few circuits of the one way system before we were able to park.

Good quality fish and chips. Chips were very good. Fish fine. Decent portions and good value . We would visit again when in the area. I would recommend. Not the best I’ve had but well above the average.

Recommended by a local business, the fish & chips were out of this world, and lovely friendly staff with a great sense of humour to boot, would definitely recommend!

Food ok but sadly when we got back to the campsite we found our order was incomplete. Too far to go back so a bit annoyed. So check your orders folks.

The best chips around! Definitely worth a stop if you're passing through Builth. Very friendly and helpful young lady behind the counter. Would recommend to anyone thinking of stopping by!

very simple , perfect chips , perfect cod, my wife's mushy peas spot on , excellent service …..go there enjoy , sit in or take out very simple , just five star fish and chips and not expensive either ...great banter with staff and customers about dogs ...

nice and simple order of sausage and chips with a rissol and when asked for salt and vinegar said just salt and they still managed to put vinegar on and it wasn't even busy there. never going back there again as they can't follow simple instructions 5 seconds after giving it

wet day so ate in , it was nearly full of the blue rinse brigade on full chat, untill food arived then complete silence, lol could not fault the food but best chips ever with nice pie,

Friendly staff, small seating area which we used Fish Cake, Cod and chicken nuggets family all enjoyed what they had I opted for plaice batter good could not eat it all as a little greasy for me. Good portions and fairly priced.

This takeaway serves consistently good fish and chips. The chips are just right and the portion sizes are great, fish is perfect. Good value for money, would recommend.

It was nice fish and chips but only opens a few hours. So get there early in the evening if you want to sit in

great fish and chips, always cooked freshly, will wrap items separately when asked, there is also an eat in option and a newspaper to read, 3 big steps up to the shop, its on the high street so parking a bit hit and miss!

Called in for a Fish'n'Chip supper while in Builth Wells. The freshly cooked fish and chips were very tasty and served by friendly polite staff. Definitely use again.....

Visited for fish and chips and asked for a thinner batter which was no trouble, came quickly and was absolutely fantastic, delicious perfectly cooked flakey fish and just the right crispy/soggy balance in the chips. Highly recommended!

Freshly cooked fish and chips are always welcome and the ones we had from here were not disappointing. Friendly and polite staff who seemed to have a good rapport with their customers - would happily go here again if we're in town any time soon.

We didn't fancy eating in a pub so this was a good stop off for dinner as it's a sit down as well as a takeaway. The fish was excellent and the chips fresh cut. Tables were clean & tidy with good condiments.

Called in for an evening meal and ate in the small seating area to the right of the kitchen. Service was good and the quality of the fish and chips excellent. Cooked fresh to order the haddock was both white and very fresh with a sweet taste and quite a large portion. Some of the best we have had recently.

Had fish and chips from this shop while on holiday the fish if you could call it that was as hard as iron and covered in a coating of dried out batter the chips were shriveled up and just as dry as the fish the whole lot was only fit for the bin Never Again.

We both had fish & chips and it was beautifully fresh and hot. The wrapping was generous and everything stayed warm til we got back to our campsite. Brilliant fish and chips and even better with an ice cold glass of white wine.

Called in while visiting wool world. We ate inside and had cod and chips. They were cooked fresh to order and were very nice and the price very reasonable.

Estábamos buscando un pescado y patatas fritas, y estuvo bien. Quizás un poco demasiado grasiento. Nos gustó mucho el bacalao, pero la solla era insípida. El bateador al instante, lo cual era genial, pero demasiado pegado en el papel de embalaje, así que terminamos comiendo sólo el interior del pescado. Las patatas fritas eran bien (3 / 5). Aparte de eso, el servicio era atento y rápido. Lo recomendaría para una rápida de pescado y patatas fritas.

Paramos aquí mientras viaja a través de Builth. Situado en la carretera principal, con aparcamiento limitado en la calle. Servicio muy rápido y las patatas fritas eran muy bonitas. Buen precio. Consideraremos llamando nuevamente si en la zona.

Lo recomiendo totalmente. Servicio rápido y muy amable, sabroso y no es caro. Volveremos en nuestra próxima visita a Gales.

We needed to be fed fast. We were! Nothing special, our and chips but taster great. Became quite busy in the short time we were there which suggests locals like their fate also

Wow , stopped while at the Builth winter fare for a warm me up lunch . Young lady that served us was pleasant and chirpy ( how's the rabbits lol ) Good portion size and let me put on my own salt and for me that's a real bonus . Long way to go from Gloucester again . Freshly cooked to puuuurrrrrfection .

Called in here with friends on the way back from Swansea to Manchester after a football match. We all had cod and chips with a pot of tea, which we ate in - there are four tables for four. Fish was fresh and tasty, batter crisp and not greasy, chips golden brown, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside as they should be, all fresh and hot the fryer. Service was friendly and quick. We all agreed that it hit the spot. Very likely to pop in again next season!

Come here most of the time if I cant be bothered to cook and I only live down the road from it. Cheep and cheerful just the way I like it. The staff are great, food is fab and quick :) highly recommended

On the way back from visiting friends we were hungry and decided to stop in Builth ,saw this cafe and so glad we did , the best fish and chips we have had in years , batter crisp ,fish lovely,big chips, nice cup of tea. Really nice staff.eat there again 100% yes.

we called here whilst visiting Builth we ordered jumbo battered sausage and chips they were freshly cooked and they were really nice the batter on the sausages was golden and crispy and very tasty as were the sausages ,the chips were very nice too we wish we had had shared a portion between us as the portions were certainly large .The service we received was very nice, pleasant staff we would call here again and the prices were good too with plenty of choice on the menu .

I travel ul and down the A470 on a regular basis and have stopped at this chippy around a dozen times by now. Chips have been quite tasty, however, I find the staff to be unwelcoming and rude. If my memory isn't mistaken, I can recall only on one occasion to have been thanked for my custom.

After my first excellent review I called in at lunchtime today as I was in the area in my car. What a disappointment! Instead of the nice white cod I had last time, when I broke open the batter I found a piece of grey coloured fish. Yuk. It went straight in the bin after I'd taken a photo of it. Needless to say, I won't be visiting this shop again.

Called in by chance as I need some food as I was on my way north. Very surprised at the quality and quantity of the fish and of the various different kinds. My fish was well cooked; the chips were slightly greasy but that was not a problem. I joined a queue which seemed to get longer as we shuffled forward. Good service and good value.

Huge portion but bland taste and so greasy. Only edible bit was the white fish in the middle, the rest went in the bin. Staff unfriendly and bored looking. They could do with a bit of competition.

Have used this chip shop for year's and its seems to being going downhill, the chips were dry and hard more like crips and the fish was half hard batter and dropping with grease, its a petty but being the only chip shop in the town your hands are tied a bit

It didnt look like it was going to be as good as it turned out to be! Had cod and chips, fish was huge, and it was all beautifully cooked. Average prices for fish and chips. service was great.

On one of our motorcycle riding days out, three of us visited this brilliant fish and chip shop on April 21st at lunchtime. Perfect chips, cooked to golden brown on the outside. The cod was also cooked to perfection, being white and flaky with a light crispy batter. Portions were ample and reasonably priced. Just a 2 minute walk from the car park, where we sat on one of the benches in the sunshine overlooking the river while we enjoyed our lunch. No doubt at all that we'll make this a regular stop. Other chippys in Wales claim to be the best and this one is right up there with them. Keep up the good work guys

Fish and chips were wonderful. Good prices, didnt have to wait too long either. Staff were friendly. The shop itself was very unusual it was like walking into someones living room, it was lovely. There were stairs leading up to the shop which would be a problem if you were disabled.

I thought for a Fish and Chip shop not on the coast, this place did a good fish and chips!It was reasonably priced, fresh and tasty!

I cant understand the other reviews? We stopped for fish and chips on the way to Elan Valley (and ate our food 200 yards away on the bank of the Wye) and it was great. The chips were crispy and not greasy, fish with thin crispy batter and the staff are friendly. Whats not to like? Treat yourself next time you are in Builth.

We have been here a few times and it can vary quite a bit but our latest (last?) Visit was very disappointingHard, overcooked, oily batter concealing indifferent fish. They can produce a reasonable result but not every time sadly

Maybe it was just the time of day about 6pm, but we bought the greasiest piece of fish in the world here. Never again.

We had a really nice take-away,fresh & tasty fish and well cooked chips all freshly cooked.Pleasant service with a smile too,most enjoyable food.

Small fish and chip shop with only 3 tables if you want to eat in. Always good food with fresh fish. Never had a bad meal here.
