We rolled up at just after 3 50 in the afternoon to be told that there was no food available because the cafe was closing. Drinks and cakes only. We said we only wanted a coffee and a cream scone or cake. The staff might have managed this onerous and complex task had the male server not intervened and told us no cakes were available because the chillers had been turned off. In the end i told the 3 staff that i was sorry to interfere with their closing and would go elsewhere. One of the females wished us a very sarcastic ' Have a good day'. How ridiculous? A village full of visitors. Where is your Yorkshire hospitality. As an ex head of North Yorks County Council services I feel ashamed were this to be typical of this establishment. The owners must also be very happy to receive such a scathing review of service.

Food was ok. Staff could of been friendlier/more cheerful. Toilet was disgusting which made me think what the rest of the hygeine in the shop/kitchen was like. Also didnt see a food hygeine rating up in window. Dont think id bother going again and would probably try the other little cafes further down the road that had a 5 star hygeine rating

We stopped off here for a bite to eat, I had Ham sandwich and my husband had a baked potato with chilli, they arrived at the table very well presented with a lovely little salad. Afterwards we treated ourselves to a slice of cake and that wasn't easy as there were so many delicious looking cakes to chose from. Everything we had was so fresh and tasted lovely. The staff were fantastic and very helpful. The little gift shop is full of lovely things to choose from. Everything is very reasonably priced. Highly recommend this place.

Me and my partner walked past this place after recently staying in Hutton Le Hole and decided to come in for some lunch. I had a chicken, chorizo and cheese panini and a pot of peppermint tea. He had a chicken, pesto and cheese panini and a cappuccino. The paninis were both served with coleslaw and a side salad. The food was tasty and not too expensive and arrived quickly. There is a little gift shop selling the usual items of bags and signs, and there are also various flavours of ice creams.

Visited Merrill's several times in our two week visit. It is a gift shop and café combined and also sell ice creams which were certainly popular whilst we were sat eating cake and drinking coffee and milk shakes. The chocolate orange cake was divine as was the lemon cake. A nice clean and tidy café with very nice friendly, helpful staff. Will be back!

Food is lovely cakes and sandwiches a treat. If you are sitting outside then ok, but a little lacking in atmosphere and tea room quaintness/tradition. The shop is almost part of the seating area, feels a little exposed and not too private.

On entring we were greeted nicely, (be aware Cash only No Credit / Debit cards) apart from DDS cards, which was the reason why we had stopped. Ordered Tea and Sandwiches. Coranation Chicken was the best i have had in many a year, then ordered Two cakes, "Her that should be obeyed" said Carrot cake was lovely. No mobile or wifi signal in Hutton le hole,so, only after we left, did the "Boss" ask "How much discount did you get with your Discount card then ?" started working things out and can not decide, if i was short changed by 40 pence or overcharged by 15 pence, on the Tea & Sandwiches and the discount on the cakes was incorrect. This will not stop us going in again, but, i will be watching the till like a Good Tyke should.

Visited while on holiday and spending the day traveling around the local picturesque villages. This was a great find with s really good menu, from sandwiches, baps, pannini's through to gammon and chips. I went for the BBQ chicken pannini, which came with coleslaw and side salad for £4.95. Great value, friendly staff and a warm welcome awaits... Highly recommended.

Pass every weekend & never been in so decided to stop off for a cold drink & then decided to have a bite to eat. Kids nuggets were soggy but coronation chicken sandwich was made from scratch as didn't want sultanas in which was good of them, however I couldn't get my first choice of sandwich filling of prawn Marie rose. Most disappointing especially as it was a Saturday - surely you would be able to serve everything on the menu early on a Saturday afternoon? Kids enjoyed looking round the gift shop but you could hear a pin drop & felt like they were being constantly watched. Found the majority of the other diners very stuck up & aloof which didn't create a very nice atmosphere. Sorry to say but definitely won't be coming back.

Merrills is a bright, tidy cafe with a decent menu comprising a few main meals along with the usual array of hot and cold sandwiches. The bacon and cheese panini was filling and very tasty and the tuna toastie was a proper, sealed Breville style toastie with the molten filling - splendid!Prices were reasonable and the service friendly and efficient. It was also very handy to be able to park outside. There is also a bit of a gift/sweet shop.

Merrill's is a gift shop with food available. We were greeted warmly by the staff who took our order promptly. We ordered the "Full Monty" which included a pot of tea for two and was really a double breakfast. The food was well cooked, good value and you could tell the eggs were fresh from their colour. We were allowed to dally around and not rushed to leave even though it got busy. The staff were friendly and informative about the local area.If you need a light snack or huge breakfast, this is the place to stop.

Had just done a lovely but demanding walk so in need of a good lunch. This place looked ok on the outside but the inside was a disappointment . Ordered inside and went to sit outside on one of the picnic tables. The coffee arrived first and a lot of mine was in the saucer . The waitress did not offer to do anything about this so we asked for a paper napkin to soak it up only to be told that they had run out of them! She did eventually bring me a clean saucer but her attitude was poor. The coffee was luke warm and not very nice . The bacon roll I ordered was actually very good and served by a much more pleasant woman. I will not be going back to this cafe !

Was hoping for a nice homely place to relax and enjoy afternoon tea and this place looked great from the outside so we went in.....As soon as we stepped inside this lifeless white rectangular room something seemed amiss. We ordered two hot chocolates and two scones. As we watched the waitress head back into the kitchen, we spotted the machine which would be making our drinks and knew we would be disappointed. The hot chocolates were made with water, as opposed to milk and tasted like the usual vending machine rubbish. The bought in scone came with synthetic cream and jam already applied as if it was to be eaten like a sandwich and was pretty awful too.To make matters worse, the kitchen obviously backs on to the restaurant area so soon we were smelling rather unpleasant chip fat smells which lingered on our clothes long after we left this place. The building looks so inviting but your in for a disappointment unless they change their ways.
